On my second EP for Studio Barnhus, I make my case for a shared space for both. Sandwiched between two love notes to Vangelis are three cuts of choice deli meats procured from the finest bodegas of the land. British producer Patrick Tipler spent his formative years immersed in psychedelia as a bassist and guitarist in various bands and groups. The arrival of synthesizers –along with his move to Bristol– radically changed his vision of sound and impacted on his musical direction with the force of an asteroid. This shockwave subsequently saw the birth of Delay Grounds. After releasing the outstanding 'Onomatopoeia' [Pressure Dome, 2020] and 'Upcycling' [Tropopause, 2021], Delay Grounds’ output has made it clear for all to see that Tipler’s sound design skills are second to none, and with just two releases to his name he has already transformed himself into an artist to watch very closely. Today Patrick joins the Lapsus crew to present 'Genus', a five track EP that he says "is my most personal release to date, something I've always carried inside and wanted to produce, but had never managed to articulate before". On 'Genus', Delay Grounds preserves the essence of his sound but takes things a step further, with a form ofmaximalist electronica, sprouting powerful torrents of high-pitched and ruff-as-rock avant-techno, glitches and mutant sound elements, combined with sweet and delicate melodies in the purest IDM style. Polishing is provided by sound engineer Nick Earle, with whom Patrick has recorded and remarkably treated a kit of "deconstructed drums" especially for the occasion. ‘Genus’ is 30 minutes of astral travelling, an experience perhaps analogous to what we would feel if we opened a vault, containing music from a lost civilization.

The nineteenth Eclectic Limited's release results from a collaboration between Kenny Dahl & R/d/v . The record translates into a journey where natural elements represent the primary source of inspiration, from the outset till its culminations.

Total turns 21 this year, and Kompakt’s venerable compilation series couldn’t have asked for a more auspicious coming-of-age collection. If Total 20 was consolidation against the odds, the Kompakt crew producing for a dreamt-of dancefloor in an uncertain future, then Total 21 feels abuzz and alive with possibilities. Significantly, it’s the first Total in some time that’s streamlined down to a single disc; this makes Total 21 even punchier than usual, a joyous, reflective, and always thrilling 75-minute audio scan of the world according to Kompakt.

As with every instalment of Total, there’s a deft balancing here of Kompakt regulars and new blood. Of the latter, there’s a first appearance by Kollmorgen, remixed by Patrice Bäumel into an astral torch song; Amsterdam’s Nicky Elisabeth, offering up Roman FLÜGEL’s pulsating, arpeggiated remix of “Celeste”; and Captain Mustache swoops down into view, Play Paul in tow, with the dream-like electro lift-off that is “Everything”. Jonathan Kaspar also drops by with a new track, “Von Draussen”, a stealthy and lethal floor-hugger with prowling bass.

Elsewhere, there’s the lead track to Michael Mayer’s astonishing recent EP, “Brainwave Technology”, which not-so-gently spears the tech-futurist babble of AI, transhumanism and posthumanism, soundtracked by one of Mayer’s typically lush, glimmering soundscapes. John Tejada reaches back to the heyday of glitch and dub techno with the gorgeous “Spectral Progressions”, while the brothers Voigt & Voigt, on “Nicht Mein Job”, seem reinvigorated by the interwoven patterns and funky minimalism of the Profan days. Not to be outdone, Jürgen Paape kicks Total 21 with “La Guittara Romantica”, a chiming and lilting lullaby for woozy late-night reflection.

Throughout, it feels as though Kompakt are taking a moment to both breathe in the dust of the past and look forward to a bright future. Perhaps that’s why, on “Fasson”, Sascha Funke seems so confident, with pinprick melodies bouncing around a hall of audio mirrors, or why THE Bionaut returns with “Blue Sky Motor Lodge”, a song so moistly melancholy, so enduringly lovely, it’ll make you weep tears of joy. Robag Wruhme gets a little delirious on the ticking, twisting “No”, and then GUI Boratto mops everything up with the bubbling, bumping glam-stomp “Wake Up”.

That’s not all – spring for the digital and/or vinyl edition and you’ll get a new cut, “Happy”, from Michael Mayer, and Marc Romboy & C.A.R.’s “I Am A Dancer”. Revelation EP is the debut release of Australian record label Denude, showcasing the latest work of Melbourne based artist Eddie Hale. The title track Revelation is both driving and warm - layered percussion lines rise and fall amongst Detroit inspired stabs and subtly textured elements creating an infectious and uplifting groove. A2?s Surging is both tunnelling and driving - straight into late night / early hours territory - with swirling sounds forming a hypnotizing sonic bath for the body and mind. Rounding up the A side with a change of pace, Aperture?s syncopated percussion leads us on a peaceful detour through ethereal synthscapes as we follow the round journey of an evolving sound that travels full circle. On the flip, Joel Mull?s Hypno Mix of Revelations propels the listener with mechanical precision through dizzyingly expansive atmospheres of truly mind melting proportions. Closing out the EP is Terrace of an Elephant, tranquil and reflective synth-work juxtaposed with coloured stabs striking through like comets across the night sky - brings us back down to Earth in a contemplative mood.

With this extreme sound statement titled ‘Facing The Absurd’, Nekyia and FossaDelRumore aimed to express a common point of view on what we all call reality, probably a standpoint shaped by their life in the magnificent yet creatively arid city of Firenze, while experimenting with sound as they have always been doing during their long-lived collaboration. Let’s face the irrationality of things, the lack of meaning of an alienating life, the limits of human condition; and let’s embrace this condition with a new inner quiet, shifting the focus on the beauty around and within us, with perception as a source of inspiration and personal improvement. Long time friend of Dixon Avenue Basement Jams and collaborator (going back 20 years) makes his debut on the label with four helpings of weird and wonky machine funk jackers. This ep perfectly encapsulates the sound of Monox where we all met many years ago. If you close your eyes whilst listening you could be there - minus the damp smells and farting subwoofers! Annie Hall once again proves why she is one of the most interesting producers right now, continuing to carve her own niche of future machine funk right in between techno, electro and IDM. Overturn delivers a razor sharp remix with plenty of attention to detail, while Inter Gritty closes the EP with some serious old school vibes.

Making his debut in January is Cuban producer and DJ, Hioll who has run his own successful imprint Abstraction since 2017, the first electronic music label to come from Cuba. Bendersnatch is back again, this time with their funky groove ‘Vice Versa’, tooled as a call to the dance floor with a kick that cuts, and bleeps reminiscent of the second wave of techno. Remote Viewing Party brings us a break beat rhythm joined by instrumentalists Ezuch & Bcota with ‘Outpost’. The duo brings shows us their depth creating an atmosphere that will bring you chills, and tears that you will probably think is sweat running down your face.

Max came to my place with Buchla and we spent a week in the studio, back in 2013 or 2014. It was all improvised, just recording tons of stuff. I then afterwards went through the recordings and did some editing, selecting suitable parts etc. And then produced the material. I released two EPs on my own label also back in 2014 i think. Now i went through the archives and chose unreleased tracks, produced and mixed them in 2020. It's my kind of techno... fast and wild.

Bendersnatch, kicks things off with a ‘Homage’ fitting of the mainstay venue paying reverence to the classic Detroit Techno sound. ADMN’s Machine 8 shows a lust for a bass grind synonymous with the engines machined in the halls of its urban decay. Remote Viewing Party’s minimal break ‘fuxwiddit’ whistles echo to us through the warehouse former machine shops. Captured Entities’ is the debut album of deeply raw house and psycho-jit-jazz by Detroit producer and DJ, Howard Thomas aka H-Fusion. Spanning the breadth of Howard’s hands-on, tracky style - from beatless cosmic jazz audities to slamming 170bpm missiles and heart-grabbing house - it’s arguably one of the most distinctive, dare-to-be-different albums from the 313 in recent memory. The fruit of more than 5 years of communication between Howard and The Death of Rave, ‘Captured Entities’ expands on the ruffneck, asymmetric slant of his killer 2005-2012 productions for Sound Signature and Fit - as played by everyone from Kyle Hall to Kassem Mosse - across 11 unruly numbers united by an intuitive, jazz-wise approach to his synths and MPC2000. While his sound may remind of many Detroit greats such as Omar-S, Damon Peterson/8088, and Urban Tribe/DJ Stingray, Howard can’t help but sound like himself, and his debut album is best defined by its classically driven yet singular Detroit soul clinamen.

2018 was a year in which Shaun Baron-Carvais, aka Shlomo, fully arrived as one of techno's most exciting talents. An individual at the centre of the city's rich and diverse scene, the Parisian affirmed the thoughts of many as he unveiled his fourteen-track debut album "Mercurial Skin" on Taapion to critical acclaim, marking a significant chapter in the Shlomo journey and a first for the imprint, with DJ Mag naming the LP #6 in their Best Albums of 2018, whilst featuring in Tsugi's top three albums of the year, with praise extending throughout the dance music world and beyond from the likes of Groove Magazin, TRAX and Mixmag, through to publications such as Liberation, Le Bonbon and more. The project signaled both the arrival of a highly anticipated album, but also a complete presentation of Shaun's universe as an artist, with Tsugi noting the release as a "first step towards the total blossoming of a big name in electronic music" as they welcomed him to curate their highly coveted cover CD, showcasing his diverse, expansive palette as both a skilled producer and also a highly accomplished DJ. Having revisited the project's material with updates and edits throughout his own live sets, the Frenchman now welcomes an impressive cast of emerging and established names to remix the package, spanning pockets of IDM and ambient textures through to warping techno as he releases the four-part "Mercurial Skin Remixes" on Taapion this September.

A new addition to the label’s extended family, Tracey arrives on Dial with his debut LP, Biostar. Following previous releases on Aus Music, Voyage Direct and Intergraded, ‘Biostar’ pushes the technical and emotional craft of this vital young producer in exciting new directions, submerging listeners in thirteen tracks of sublime electro, ambient experimentation and warm, tonal techno. Based in the Netherlands, Tracey’s music is undoubtedly indebted to a legacy of emotive electronic music, the sort whose stark futurist vision cannot be equalled. Instead he strives and succeeds to create something personal and charismatic from a perhaps familiar palette of sounds.

Repress alert! In the four years since legendary Italian producer alexander Robotnik dropped his Undicidisco ep on hell yeah, it has become a cult classic.

The big room Italo beats have become modern staples and regular fixtures in sets by the likes of Gerd Janson, Peggy Gou, Prins Thomas, Dixon and many others around the globe. Because of this, original 12" versions are highly sought after but rather than paying inflated prices, you can now get your hands on this re-issue.

The original track here dates back to a coast to coast 12” in 2013. It became a big regular tune for the Balearic Gabba Sound System crew back then before the wider scene picked it up and made it into favourite it is now.

'Undicidisco' still sounds wildly original and wonderfully unique today with its trippy melodic leads and chunky drum slaps.

There is also a rugged cosmic mix from Prins Thomas, a raw and unhinged Bawrut version and swirling ambient and downtempo fusion from Irish outfit the vendetta suite to complete this package.

Do not sleep on this Bonafide Balearic bomb.

MUSCLES & HATE is an unnamed artist from Russia producing raw, pulsating EBM-inclined rhythmic techno. His second white label release on bore hole in 2018 was quickly sold out and is now getting a limited repress.

‘BAPTISMA is 55 years old, lives in Nagoya and runs an art space and concert venue called Spacio Rita. He has never before released any music.

In the hot and humid Japanese summer of 2016 YPY and I played a show at Sapcio Rita, Shintaro was DJing and BAPTISMA played a short show, too. It was impulsive and driving while somewhat earthy and dark, buzzing with dense energy like a jungle yet spacious like the hall of the mountain king.

I was captivated. BAPTISMA liked the idea of a release and we embarked on that long journey that finally led to DISK16. Along the trip we proudly welcomed HODGE from Bristol as a stowaway. His unexpected remix well rounding this square project. Finally MARIA MENDES from Lisboa served as our beacon, providing a simple and beautiful jacket for this neat release!’

Dolly is proud to welcome Parisian wunderkind Coni to the label. Operating on the brink of meditative house and (Detroit) techno, Nicolas Olier's particularly hypnotic offering will certainly stand out in any set. The title track "Caligula" is a slowly developing, climactic techno burner with icey, Imperial strings hovering over it. A2 "Electroflash" is a more warm, lush, deep-into-Sunday-afternoon bubbler with a distinct French feel, topping breezy chords with a sharp hook to give it edge. With fellow Parisian Bambounou joining Coni on the flip side, "Medusa" goes deeper into percussive territory with a pulsating bongo riddim embraced by haunting organ pads perfect for those all-lights-off moments. Detroit producer Norm Talley shares his debut album, “Norm-A-Lise” on FXHE Records. Having started his career when disco was king, Talley’s real life influences over his 25+ year career have included the originations of house through various iterations. His reference points as one of the original members of the West 6 Mile Detroit crew and his dedication to his Analog only studio position him as one of the more dynamic Detroit artists who’s finally taking the time to release a complete project for his long awaiting fans. The album features 14 original tracks with influences of disco, house, and beyond taking his signature infectious style deeper.
