Equipped with a cassette porta studio and a mic found in a recycling bin, Your Planet Is Next has put together an album of 10 tracks stripped down to their essentials. Half of the them were produced using a Yamaha CS-01 synthesizer and a Yamaha MR-10 drum machine — the perfect 1982 budget combo — while the other half were made solely with a Yamaha CS-10 synthesizer and a Boss DR-55 drum machine, both from the late 70s and budget options even in their heydays. Edition Hawara’s fifth release is a raw funk gem by a little-known Austrian pop band called Magic Sound. Edition Hawara’s second 7“release features one of the more obscure Austrian bands from the 1980s. Little is known about Magic Sound. The cover suggests that their label wanted them to be Austria’s Village People, though their sound is much rawer and funkier. One thing we know for sure is that the group included Andy Töfferl, who was also a member of the famous Austrian pop ensemble EAV (Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung). And we know that they went to the studio to record a whole album after touring Sweden in 1980. Only these two songs survived, and they are worth listening to over and over again. Enjoy in fancy dress, or dressed down. With or without a moustache.

The mighty Visionquest label returns to celebrate 10 outstanding years in the game with a fantastic offering of new music! The EP is the first various artist EP in a series of 3, with each 12″ featuring unique artwork by Christopher Mohn, formerly of Dance Spirit. Ryan Crosson and Francesco Tristano kick things of with the beautiful, up-tempo jam, “Kerosene Years”. It’s full of crisp, bright percussion and synths that oscillate between bouncy and dreamy Detroit to Berlin vibes. Arpeggiators that at times resemble steel drums dance around leading into beautiful piano chords and rhythmic riffs. The energy is high and full of class. Lee Curtiss rolls in with his inimitable sound on “The Dogma Ate My Homework”. A bad boy bassline provides a floor bookended by his late night vocals and a synth filled bridge showcasing his sublime melodic side before slapping back to focus on the bass. The kick is big, the drums are sharp and it’s primed to crush a dancefloor. Shaun Reeves and Seth Troxler start the B side with “For the Ages”. The listener is immediately dropped into a cosmic world of space age keys and twisting vocals. The drums are patient and forward moving, providing a bed for drenched vocals both spoken and sung. All the while we hear sounds that resemble shooting stars and comets gliding through space and time. The EP finishes with “Laverne’s Day Off” by Laverne Radix aka Maayan Nidam. No time is wasted getting right into a bumping bass and dope vocal loops, cool synths and guitar lines. Different elements of the percussion start and stop to build tension and release sections perfectly before we drop right back into vocal chops that dance with a playful attitude. It’s a fantastic offering from the label heads with their close friends and surely a great intro to what will be a stellar series to celebrate 10 years of this genre defining imprint!

Over the last decade, M. Geddes Gengras has released an enormous catalog of wide-ranging, synth-focused music in both solo and collaborative settings. He has participated in influential experimental groups like Sun Araw, Pocahaunted, Robedoor, and Akron/Family. Expressed, I Noticed Silence, Gengras’s third release on Hausu Mountain, exemplifies Gengras’s penchant for constant self-reinvention and genre-defiant exploration within a catalog whose every release carries his essence as a composer and synthesist while surging forward into new ideas and territories. With Gengras’s slowly unfurling ambient landscapes and his signature approach to rhythms animated by cyclical basslines and the layering of high-definition synth voices, Expressed, I Noticed Silence builds on the precedents set by his recent output while digging deeper into melodic sculpting and lush harmonic architectures than ever before. The A-Side "Bra Manika" is a straight-to-the-point albeit hypnotizing dancefloor tune where the groove is king. Its leading hook revolves around a wonky bassline and a handful of quirky synth stabs, coupled with a trippy vocal sample that creates the perfect atmosphere for dancing hypnotism. The B-Side "I Know You", which carries the name of the EP, explores a much darker and experimental vibe while retaining the same rolling groove from the flipside of the EP. Synth noises are replaced by authentic sampled sounds, programmed in detail, giving it an almost cinematic touch.

Jones’ enduring underground hit ‘I Don’t Know’ with a superb new remix from Oscar L and two classic remixes from Butch and Herbert. Chelonis R. Jones is the California-born, New York-based poet, singer and writer who has released several albums, both as a solo artist and in collaboration. Most famously, he co-wrote and sang on Ro?yksopp’s ‘49 Percent,’ while ‘I Don’t Know’ remains a much-loved house track. The original is a heavyweight house groove with taught drums and slapping hits. The seductive vocal is packed with warmth and soul and is what makes this one such a classic. The fresh new remix comes from Oscar L, a house and tech mainstay of the last 15 years. His personal sound comes with a rich array of left-of-centre references and has won him the support of the likes of Richie Hawtin and Adam Beyer. After signing with labels like Drumcode and Knee Deep In Sound he now showcases his style on this fantastic remix. It is a fulsome version with big, pumping drums and a steamy intensity that is heightened by the passionate vocal. As the track builds to the breakdown the crowd will be in raptures before it kicks off in style once again. Next come two previously released but still vital remixes. The first is from the hugely prolific Butch. After spending some time on the Adriatic coast of Croatia, Fred wrote his 2018 album Long Way Home. Barbarella was one of the songs on the album. It was inspired by a morning set he did at Barbarellas, the infamous outdoor venue in Tisno. The kitsch disco vibes are also a wink to the cult B-movie of the same name. But it was the 7am in Tisno mix, featured on the alternate version of the album No Way Home that made the song popular. While there was no plan to release it as a single, Fred had the idea to contact I:Cube, one of his all-time favourite producers, to see If he would be interested in remixing it. The process took a little while but thanks to confinement, with more available time in the studio, the I:Cube Parisian Sleeze Version was born. Taking only a few elements from the original, he completely rearranged the track into a modern disco classic as only the Cube can do. This is one of those cuts that gets better every time you hear it. On the B-side, Fred’s Slow Down 2021 Version expands on the Balearic vibe at a slower tempo. Sounding a little bit like Sade on acid, with added samples from the 1968 Jane Fonda movie.

Dublin's Minos makes his debut on DBA with a rich spread of rollers covering the techno and electro diaspora backed by a Claude Young remix. His influences are techno, IDM and metal, from Downwards to Jeff Mills and Drexciya via Slayer. Originally from a live music background, he was converted to techno after hearing Mills play at the now sadly defunct Twisted Pepper in Dublin, and the Sorry I'm Late EP will leaves little doubt that it's Detroit's own brand of high energy, sci-fi sounding techno that inspires his work.
Minos has steadily been making moves in Dublin's fertile underground scene for the past few years as both a DJ and producer. He first released music as Urizen on BRW Records and is a part of Dublin collective wherethetimegoes with a number of other local artists. Never one for sticking to the same method, his production setup utilises both analogue gear and software to create music that continues to build on techno's history while looking to the future.
Claude Young Jr. is universally acknowledged as one of the most respected producers and djs to come from the legendary home of techno, Detroit. His best known studio mixes include: AX-033 Claude Young 'Thoughts Of Phutura' (the only official mix compilation for Jeff Mills' Axis Records) and his legendary Claude Young DJ-Kicks Mix for K7!

Musiche di L.u.c.a. Produced and written by Francesco De Bellis L.u.c.a. is Francesco De Bellis aka Francisco. Years ago he started putting together some selections for a friend of his: Luca. The intention was to pick songs to be played during car rides, and like any other kind of ritual, this too would come with strict rules. You’d have to go throw the whole selection of 100 tracks without skipping, because every single one was important. Be it the sounds, the arrangement or its creativity, each track was there for a very specific reasons. It quickly became a monthly event which for several years evolved in a deep musical research without genre boundaries: Disco and psychedelic, soundtracks, library music, exotica, electronic and dance music, italo, new wave, pop or prog. Tracks of each and any historical period and provenance had been featured in this special compilations. But it wasn’t always that easy to come up with the right piece and eventually Francesco started producing a few on his own to fill in the gaps. After six tracks, it was quite clear that there was a project developing, one in which he could finally experiment freely, leaving behind the rules that often come with dance tracks. Of course, no name could have been better than the one of his friend that had inspired everything? And so L.u.c.a was born. Now, while preserving the same mind set, L.u.c.a is back with an album that embraces a new-hippie vibe, strongly pervaded by a mystical naturalism. This is a whole new universe in the making, where rumbling magmatic atmospheres evolve gradually in a journey through an idealist new world, celestial interludes revealing a full take over of nature, with a pervasive library feel that dates back to the great Italian masters, carrying on Edizioni Mondo’s legacy.
