Suffocate in the void that Altarage brings forth. Reality will suffer. Nothing can crawl away from the open mouth of Nihl. In 2016 Spain's Altarage changed the face of death metal with a watershed moment that marked an inexorable point of no return, and Sentient Ruin was there to tell this story through release of the band's debut demo the year prior and of this beast on cassette tape format the following year. With its sheer tonnage and immensity, Nihl appeared instantly as a masterpiece that would pave the way to a new era of death metal and to a new way of conceiving and interpreting the notion of absolute heaviness. While the game-changing repercussions and influence this monster has had on extreme metal may still require some years to be fully assessed and understood, still nothing in the present can challenge what Altarage have accomplished and constructed within the omnipotency of Nihl. Before Nihl dissonant, abstract, atmospheric extreme metal, and traditional riff-heavy death metal still lived two clearly defined, separated existences traveling on parallel trajectories which rarely touched. Nihl created a visionary and daring perturbation in this balance. A foreboding disturbance which sent the course of events on an entire new path, causing the two styles to inexorably converge unto another creating a new lineage of hyper-evolved death metal that conjoined the best of both worlds and triggered the birth of a new death metal world entirely its own. A world in which the notions of immensity, surrealism, and sensorial oppression assume monstrous traits and in which unreality becomes a not only a reality, but a bleak weapon of catharsis and transcendence. After working with the band from their obscure inception back in 2015, we continue to honor and celebrate the genius and legacy of Altarage, particularly of Nihl the point of no return that gifted us all with a new notion of heaviness, with a reissue on all formats of a beast whose power and enormity remain enigmatic and ungraspable, but widely acknowledged and revered to this day.

Fire and brimstone from Icelandic Black Metal band Altari, as their volcanic new album Kröflueldar erupts via Svart Records on 14.04.23. Named after a series of eruptions that happened at Krafla in Iceland in 1975, Kröflueldar represents the constant threat of ash that Altari’s music lives under. Kröflueldar was a 9 year series of eruptions, and since the album took almost 9 years to create, Altari felt that it was a fitting title for their scalding and ferocious music.

Fans of Craft, Deathspell Omega, Blut Aus Nord and the more well known Icelandic Black Metal bands like Misþyrming and Sinmara will revel in digging into Kröflueldar’s rotten soil, but there is something far more experimental and avant-garde to be reaped within the whirlwind of sound that Altari produces. With their foundations of sound in the classic eras of early Judas Priest, songs like Leðurblo?kufjandinn call to mind the discordant soundclash of bands like Voivod, Virus and even Sonic Youth in the interplay of melody and disharmony. The bewildering, but utterly charming frenzy of taking the raw sound of metal to the limits breaks through from Altari’s literal geological location in a landscape in constant upheaval. Guitarist and Vocalist Ó.Þ.Guðjónsson notes that; “bands such as Blue Öyster Cult, Interpol, Killing Joke were a big inspiration for us as well for the use of clean guitars as the sound for leads. I expressed a desire to find some balance between the overdriven rhythm and melodic yet clean leads. These bands helped us find that.”

It is through these uncommon and almost blasphemous influences that Altari proves to be a rare gem in the much vaulted Icelandic Black Metal crown, giving Kröflueldar the dna of a band that feels they have so much potential and fervor brewing up in their molten kiln. Tracks like Sy?rulu?ður with the vocals of Gyða Margrét are as delicate and subtle, cloaked in smoky atmosphere, as they are dark and brooding, giving hints of bands like This Mortal Coil and Cocteau Twins.

When Guðjónsson states that the intention was an “overall desire for us to get away from the sound that has been a gateway for others here in the scene” they imbued Kröflueldar with a beguiling essence that’s hard to pin down, but magnetically unique. The co-production work of Stephen Lockhart, a staple of the Icelandic Black Metal scene and sound, is of quality but something very different from his signature work, born from what Guðjónsson describes as a need for a “new sonic approach,” Kröflueldar’s sonic eruptions, from the low earthy rumblings to the cacophonic and epic high notes, feels thoroughly worked but raw enough to be unsettling in the new ground it uncovers. Svart Records head honcho Tomi Pulkki expands on the reasons behind his new signing, saying that; “I found their approach refreshingly idiosyncratic in the way it mixes cleaner sounds with distortion. Altari brings something new to Black Metal and that is a rare thing these days”.

Founded in 1990 in Helsinki, Finland-based melancholic metal masters AMORPHIS wrote music history, incl. classic albums like f.e. their debut The Karelian Isthmus (1992), their breakthrough Tales From The Thousand Lakes (1994) and Eclipse (2006), their first album with the new vocalist Tomi Joutsen, which marked the beginning of a new era in the band‘s history. Regardless of their relentless touring schedule, they secretly returned to the studio to write and record their forthcoming, twelfth record with famous producer Jens Bogren (SOILWORK, KREATOR etc.) at his Fascination Street Studio in Örebro. The result of this two-month recording session is once again a heavy, melodic statement, called Under The Red Cloud . During the recordings, the sextet was joined by some famous guest musicians: Chrigel Glanzmann (ELUVEITIE) played flutes on 'The Four Wise Ones', 'Death Of A King' and 'Tree Of Ages', Martin Lopez (ex-OPETH drummer) played percussions on 'Death Of A King' and Aleah Stanbridge (TREES OF ETERNITY) sang guest vocals on 'The Four Wise Ones', 'Sacrifice' and 'White Night'. “It was a great honor to have such talented musicians appearing on Under The Red Cloud ,“ guitar player and founding member Esa Holopainen comments. “Each one of them puts his/her personality and character in the very right spot.“ The whole recording process was a time full of extremely intense work for AMORPHIS. “It was the first time, that I woke up at 08.00am to start recordings. They went on until 06.00pm in the evening - every day! But the result was definitely worth it,“ the guitarist continues. “It was a great experience and Jens made us playing more aggressive and working really hard“, drummer Jan Rechberger adds. Jens Bogren also handled the mixing and mastering of Under The Red Cloud . A perfect example for the variety and feel is the first single 'Death Of A King'.It starts with an oriental melody & crashing drums, and has a lot of dynamics.

Back after just a few years with a third album of arcane evil speed-metallic riffcraft, there is no questioning the apex of inspiration is still riding high beyond classic Chilean thrash metal band APOSTASY‘s return back in 2013. Driven by their own fiercely traditional conviction from the start the banners of this classic Valparaíso-borne forever underground entity still fly by a strong willed and highest standard. If we can consider their previous full-length, The Sign of Darkness, the band making good on their promised return with blazing and uncompromising evil thrash then we can view Death Return as further solidification of their legacy featuring prime works beyond 2018. The mid-to-late eighties are still in sight as these new pieces generally veer towards brutal South American thrash of that era but, this time around they’ve made some room for nostalgia including a few remade classics from Sunset of the End as well as the strongest tracks from EP and demo releases during the interim. The greater effect is a summary of this dark-souled thrash entity’s past and present self framed as one experience, a sustained continuum of steadfast ideals."—Grizzly

American industrial metal conspirators Ash Prison (formed by Matt Auxier of electro-industrial act 6th Circle on guitars and electronics, by bassist J. Thompson of East Coast darkwave cult Child Ov Night, and by California-based Italian vocalist M. Alagna of Abstracter, Somnolent and ex-Atrament) arise with their pulverizing debut album Future Torn, a collaborative, cross-genre usurpation of heavy industrial electronics, dark hardcore punk and black/heavy metal united under the black banner of total anarchy, chaos, and absolute retaliation. Influenced by acts like Ministry, Skinny Puppy, G.I.S.M., Mayhem, Motörhead, Discharge and Godflesh, on the pummeling debut long player Ash Prison infer of a future, and soon to be, dystopian failed state fallen into complete anarchy and chaos, being paid back with violence and scorn for its own perpetration of injustice and corrupt societal squalor. Within this dark conceptual framework, a crushing barrage of cold sequences, torrential, obsessive drum machines, bulldozing bass lines and abrasive, distorted electronics serve as the backbone to a vitriolic onslaught of grinding guitars and hateful vocals reminiscent of and inspired by the iconic despisal of pioneering underground vocalists like Sakevi Yokoyama and Attila Csihar. A highly original, deadly, and thought-provoking syncretism of dark social commentary and sonic antagonism, Future Torn unites various eras, decades, and interpretations of musical insurrectionism to create its own divergent idea of "anarcho-punk", post-industrial dystopia, and heavy metal destruction to soundtrack and instigate the rise of turmoil, riots, violence, and widespread destruction.

If you’re looking for a band that embody everything hardcore punk should be, then you’re looking for Birds in Row. Sonically, they’re fearless. Lyrically, they’re as poetic as they are recusant. And live, they’re a ruthless force, matching the power of their music with boundless, must-see energy. After debut album You, Me & the Violence sparked listeners’ imaginations, 2018 follow-up We Already Lost the World was an unyielding inferno of brazen ideas. Metal Hammer UK called it “intelligent, poignant art,” writing that “this downward spiral changes pace and weight at every turn.” It screamed for mutual respect in a world of increasingly extreme political divides, and used the vehicles of punk, post-hardcore and post-metal to carry its cries. Now comes Gris Klein. Birds in Row’s third full-length album is their most genre-bending and timely declaration yet. “Water Wings” opens, its scraping guitar strums a ticking clock, counting down to the inevitable barrage of hardcore to follow. “Noah” revs up over its six gargantuan minutes. Its singing slowly spirals into apoplectic screeches. “Trompe l’oeil” is half folk, half punk, and “Winter Yet” has no qualms about busting out seismic metal guitars at its climax. It’s an amorphous beast of an album: always unpredictable, but never out of character for this creative collective. Gris Klein’s lyrics were sculpted by the Covid-19 pandemic, eloquently summarizing the cruel and sometimes nonsensical nature of mental illness. “Trompe l’oeil”, for example, sings, “Most of the times I feel lonely are when my friends are around.” “This is the exact moment where you should feel like you’re surrounded by people you love and you’re not alone,” the band add. “It asks, ‘If I can’t feel loved in this specific moment, then when can I feel that?’” Gris Klein is a portrait of a world enduring its most chaotic era in a generation. Yet throughout, the Birds in Row manifesto is the same as it’s always been: love each other. “We really want people to know that they’re not alone, and that they can count on each other,” they say. “The way we treat each other is political. It’s OK to trust each other. All the movies about catastrophes show people turning against each other, but that’s not what would happen. When people are in the shit, they help each other. That’s what we’re trying to transmit with this record: hold each other’s hands.” Not even a world-shaking pandemic could damage Birds in Row’s invention, compassion and brutality. Bleed From Within is a heavy metal band formed in 2005 at Glasgow, Scotland. Era, originally released in 2018 by Century Media, is the band's fourth studio album. Rising from their moss-covered crypt, Cauchemar is back with their third full-length, Rosa Mystica, the band’s first offering since 2019’s Trapped Under Ice compilation. With their new concept album "2222", Chaosbay definitely leave their status as an insiders' tip behind: The Berlin Progressive Metalcore band pushes their unmistakable interplay of unrestrained brutality and inescapable catchiness to the extreme in the almost 45 minutes spread over 12 songs. Almost every song has the potential for an epic stadium hit that couldn't be more festival-ready. The album describes a utopia of our future world in a kind of anti-apocalypse, from the point of view of a person who finds himself in the year 2222. With Débil Clan DOS Mortos Cicatriz condense a fifteen-year career influenced by the darkest sides of punk and hardcore as well as by crust, Oi!, goth, deathrock, post-punk, and black metal, into twenty eight-song triumph of crepuscular and cemeterial death-punk majesty. Riddled with a tangible sense of loathing and malaise, these twenty eight tracks encapsulate the history of a band influenced by acts Black Flag, Misfits, G.I.S.M., Void, Christian Death, Rudimentary Peni, and Hellhammer as they revel in the most remitted and destitute declinations of punk, digging deep into the most skeptical underworld of the genre devoid of idealism and dominated instead by pessimism and negativity. North Carolina’s Cosmic Reaper comes crashing through the speakers with their self-titled debut album. Dripping with a classic 70’s attitude, mixing sci-fi oriented lyrics, brief but satisfying moments of prog exploration, all while keeping one foot firmly planted in modern doom, you start to get an idea of the interstellar journey that awaits. The heaviest elements are there and are guaranteed to move planets. The stars align and engines ignite as Cosmic Reaper claws at the soul of the genre. Biography Hailing from Charlotte, North Carolina, Psych-Doom outfit Cosmic Reaper delivers classic doom & stoner metal elements dipped in psychedelia. In its infancy, bass player Garrett Garlington and guitar player Dillon Prentice, together in Garrett’s kitchen, mixed heavy and fuzzy harmonies with crushing riffs. Not long after, the duo added Thad Collis. His ethereal vocals and impassioned guitar harmonies are what built the band’s foundation. Jeremy Grobsmith, a Colorado Springs metal veteran (The Great Redneck Hope, Matterhorn and Worry) had recently moved to The Queen City, befriended the guys and was quickly asked to join. His hard-hitting and eclectic drum style rounded out the Cosmic Reaper sound and the band was born. Following a year of practice and fine tuning their sound, Cosmic Reaper made their live debut in July of 2019. In September of that same year, they recorded the Demon Dance EP at Greensboro’s recording studio The Parliament House, along side owner and maverick Jacob Beeson. Noteworthy exposure from doom metal focused podcasts and web-zines helped in the success of their first offering. Following the release, the band continued to perform regionally and then capitalized on the time afforded by the unfortunate shutdown of venues and they began writing their first full length album. The band returned to Beeson’s studio in the summer of 2020 to start recording. Laden with droning riffs and down tempo walls of monolithic sound, they completed their crushing Self-titled debut full length. The start of 2021 ushers in a new and monumental era for the guys as Cosmic Reaper becomes part of the Heavy Psych Sounds family.

The four-headed riff-snorting chimera that is 'Dirt Woman' release their debut 'The Glass Cliff'! Killing it on this masterpiece of an album, Zoe Koch makes a haunting vocal performance, Avery Mallon bangs and booms from behind a monstrous drumkit, Gabe Soloman’s and Koch bring hellish, searing tones on guitars and Kearney Mallon provide thunderous bellows on bass! The first track “Lady of the Dunes” gives a taster of what is to come. The phrase “Sabbath-in-slow-motion” comes to mind every time the riff drops back to another unbelievably heavy low note. What do you expect from a band called Dirt Woman? Probably not this. Five songs, three of them thirteen-plus minutes, and a colossal sound that will leave you overwhelmed, clutching your head, wondering if you still have ears. Each mammoth track has its own shade and flavour, all are dominated by Kearny Mallone’s guitar. Dubbed “The Big Guitar” in press releases, it’s a fitting name for the wall of sound blitz he conjures every time he strums. Heavy as Electric Wizard, more interesting than Windhand, it must be heard to be believed! This psychedelic doom is not for the weak of heart, if this is their first record, imagine what else they are capable of... put that in your pipe and smoke it!
