During the late 1970s, after No Wave pioneer Lydia Lunch met saxophonist James Chance, she began setting her angry and disjointed poetry to anti-music, founding her ground-breaking band Teenage Jesus and The Jerks with Lunch’s shouted lyrics matched by her non-conventional use of electric guitar. The group’s self-titled debut EP is a fast and furious affair, produced by Robert Quine of the Voidoids/Lou Reed, with future Nick Cave drummer Jim Sclavunos on bass and Bradley Field on minimalist percussion; steeped in aggression and audacity, it’s an awesome disc that rebuffs punk’s easy cliches and refuses to be categorized. This reissue also includes the ‘Pre’ EP and the tracks from the legendary No New York compilation. Essential!

The live album originally peaked at #22 in the UK Top 40 Album Chart in 1980 and also spent an entire year in the Independent Album Chart, earning a Silver sales certification.

The recorded gig took place on 17 June 1980 at the legendary Club Lafayette, Wolverhampton where Sex Pistols, Led Zeppelin and Stevie Wonder all performed. The gig was recorded on the Rolling Stones’ Mobile Recording Unit and has been remastered from the original master tapes by Nick Watson.

So Sick, the debut album on In the Red Records by Southern California punk quartet the Side Eyes, raises interesting questions about nature versus nurture—the eternal scientific debate about whether a human being’s personality is predetermined by genetics or whether it’s actually shaped by the environment one grows up in. Their lead singer, Astrid McDonald, is a fascinating test case. The 22-year-old Angeleno is the real-wild-child daughter of Go-Go’s guitarist-songwriter Charlotte Caffey and Redd Kross singer-guitarist Jeff McDonald. How much has McDonald’s notoriously fiery onstage presence been influenced by basic heredity and how much was her personality inspired by being raised by two legendary punk-pop icons?

Similarly, how did growing up together as brothers in New Jersey affect the hard-driving musical attack of 22-year-old guitarist Kevin Devine and 20-year-old bassist Chris Devine? Much of rock history has been fueled by the unique familial dynamics and sibling rivalries of brothers in bands, from the Everly Brothers and the Kinks’ Ray and Dave Davies to Redd Kross’ Jeff and Steven McDonald. When the two Devines’ aggressive approach is combined with 23-year-old San Diego native Nick Arnold’s remorselessly throttling drumming, the Side Eyes end up as a powerfully controlled punk rock machine that blows past the sonic barriers of their past inspirations.

At its purest, there is little that can match the visceral thrill and empowering spirit of hardcore. As front-man of New York City hardcore kings Cro-Mags, this is something John Joseph knows very well, and with Up In Arms, he and his Bloodclot compatriots deliver a furious collection that hits hard on every level. "In this band we're doing what each of us have always done: give it our all," he states plainly. "We work hard, and we have a lot to say. Look around the planet - people are fed up with the corrupt ruling class. They destroy the planet and kill millions for profit, and the formula for our response is simple: Anger + applied knowledge = results. Don't just bitch. Change it." The results reflect the roots and passions of the individual members. Danzig/Murphy's Law guitarist Todd Youth was the first piece of the puzzle. "We've always talked about doing this record together, Todd had songs written and I had notebooks full of lyrics. In late September 2015, I went out to LA to do a triathlon and injured my calf muscle, so I couldn't race, and Todd said he could get some studio time. So, we went in and cut the demo. While there are things we may perceive as a negative in our lives, in fact the universe has a bigger plan, and that experience ultimately resulted in the record." Having been friends with Queens Of The Stone Age and Danzig powerhouse drummer Joey Castillo for three decades, the two musicians had long admired each other's work, and their collaboration has been a long time coming. Following Castillo's suggestion of bringing in Nick Oliveri (Queens Of The Stone Age/The Dwarves) to handle bass duties, the lineup was complete. The songs that comprise Up In Arms manifested after the quartet plugged in and let the music speak for them. "We didn't decide to try to play anything, these are the songs that happened when we started jamming, and I love this band because there are no egos involved. Our goal is to make the best music possible, period. I love it when those guys contribute with melodies, etc., and I've even helped with some of the arrangements. Because we all think alike, our lyrics deal with the issues of the day, and that makes for better songs." Every track on Up In Arms lives up to the rallying cry of the album's title - the bursts of high energy hardcore act as the perfect accompaniment to Joseph setting his sights on injustice and the seemingly endless flaws of the contemporary world. The breakneck thrashing of "Slow Kill Genocide" is an anthem for everyone sickened by those responsible for "killing the planet and all its inhabitants through industry and war. They're fucking maniacs and must be stopped." The suitably titled "Manic" attacks with bared fangs, Joseph making it clear that you can only push someone so far before they will react with violence - a call to arms for the disenfranchised who want tomorrow's world to be better than today's. Tracked at NRG in Los Angeles, the raw, old-school production that leaps out from the speaker comes courtesy of producer Zeuss (Hatebreed, Revocation), and the record was mixed by Kyle McAulay at NRG. From the moment the opening title track explodes to life, it's clear that everyone involved is having a blast and playing from the heart, and that this is no frills / no bullshit music at its most passionate - every song evoking mental images of utter chaos in a heaving mosh pit. For anyone approaching the album for the first time, Joseph has only this to say: "Turn the volume way the fuck up!" And with plans to tour everywhere, Bloodclot will be getting in a lot of faces in 2017 and beyond. "We are already writing material and the next album is in the works. But, for now, all we want is to hit the stage to support 'Up in Arms', and every single night leave every ounce of ourselves up there."

Dark Entries and Sacred Bones team up to release the early discography of UK synth-punk and Deathrock label Outer Himmalayan Records. Between 1979 and 1982, Nick Blinko and Martin Cooper’s Outer Himmalayan Records released 7-inches by three short-lived bands – The Magits, Soft Drinks, and S-Haters – who would nonetheless cast a massive shadow on the UK’s burgeoning post-punk/anarcho punk scene. Outer Himmalayan Presents collects all of the music found on those original records, along with rare and unreleased tracks by all three bands. It’s a snapshot of a period of frenzied creativity by some of the UK’s most thrilling experimental punks.


Before Blinko went on to found the essential anarcho band Rudimentary Peni, whose storied body of work also appeared on Outer Himmalayan, he and label co-founder Cooper were The Magits. The lone release by the minimal synth-and-vocals duo, Fully Coherent, was the inaugural release on Outer Himmalayan — and, in fact, Blinko and Cooper’s impetus for starting the label. The four tracks on Fully Coherent are short, sharp bursts, comprising a total of four minutes. Here, they’re presented alongside the five-and-a-half minute “A Pawn in the Game,” a song that sees Blinko and Cooper get truly weird with the extra space the longer runtime afforded them.


The next release on Outer Himmalayan was S-Haters’ Death of a Vampire 7", which the quartet quickly followed with Stories as Cold as the Irish Sea. The band was recognizably a deathrock act, their gothic punk in the same lineage as Joy Division and PIL’s Metal Box, but it showed the same sonic adventurousness that characterized the rest of Outer Himalayan’s output. “1980,” an oddity taken from the rare Another Bouquet on the Grave of Free Enterprise cassette comp, shows the most experimental flourish, with dueling male/female vocals and a prominent acoustic guitar.


The final Outer Himmalayan release before it became strictly a Rudimentary Peni label was Soft Drinks’ Popstars in Their Pyjamas 7". Popstars ended up being the tongue-in-cheek synth-punk trio’s only release before their breakup, though they would also record “Dangers of Drink,” for the Bouquet of Barbed Wire comp and included here, as well as the one-off track “Misconception,” previously unreleased but now available exclusively on Outer Himmalayan Presents.


All songs have been mastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. Cover artwork features a collage by Eloise Leigh and each copy includes a 20-page zine featuring liner notes and ephemera associated with the original pressings plus never before seen photos.

IDLES – bristol's punk quintet glorified by all the press – release their new album on August 31 on Partisan. On the 12 songs that make up "Joy as an Act of Resistance ." we find Joe Talbot and his acolytes who once again deliver a powerful, electric and effective record. Produced by Space and mixed by Adam Greenspan and Nick Launay (Arcade Fire, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Kate Bush). "Joyas an Act of Resistance."puts into yoke everything related to machismo, nationalism, immigration, and class inequality all with a contagious and natural positive energy.

By the time the Hyenas went back into the studio, Kevin Strickland and Jim Kimball had left to form Mule and had left John and Larissa without a rhythm section. Many people thought this marked the end of the band. Not the case. Todd Swalla (founding member of Necros) stepped in on drums and Kevin Ries on bass. Todd is a much more subtle timekeeper than Jim and Ries had no problem locking in with him, but stayed in the background a little more than Strickland leaving Larissa to take up a little more of the slack. She rises to the occasion, her leads a bit more melodic than before, although still blanketed in a sheet of noise. Brannon's anguished vocals will still peel the paint of the walls and over the new slightly toned down direction, somehow seem even more extreme.

Crawl is notably the only of the Hyenas records recorded in Detroit at White Room Studios.

This album saw one more line up change: Kevin Ries left and one time Necros Ron Sakowski stepped in, the Hyenas went down to Memphis to the legendary Easley Studios to record their final LP with the one and only Doug Easley. On Hard Times, we see the Hyenas influences are more Howlin' Wolf/Muddy Waters than they are Nick Cave/Iggy Pop. The full-on sonic assault of the first three records has given way to a hard hitting groove that has a graceful Exile-era Stones vibe. Larissa's simple and one-of-a-kind guitar playing has never been better. Brannon does more crooning than screaming on this one, giving us their most ''musical'' offering yet. Every bit as emotionally ruthless as their previous releases, the Laughing Hyenas went out on a high note with Hard Times.

"Too much so-called psych-punk or acid-punk or whatever boils down sonically to some efx added to a familiar punk/rock format. I’m sorry, but that doesn’t qualify to my ears. On the other hand, this SLUMP band from Richmond, Virginia, ranks high. Very high. (And so am I.) They’ve been around for about four years now, with the current lineup of WILL FENNESSEY (bass), TONY NOWOTARSKI (Moog/guitar), NICK YETKA (drums), and SUSPICIOUS SONNY (vocals/guitar). They self-released a single in 2016 that kinda reminds me of the NYC HC band Kaleidoscope, except there are prominent electronics. They also released an excellent split EP (with True Body) that found them expanding the songs into longer chunks that allow for more freedom to move.


And that brings us to their debut LP. Slump has retained the hardcore and sludge, but it would be hard to convince some people that this is punk-rock at all. (It is! And it isn’t!) Let’s mention Hawkwind. The UK space-rock group has become a template for riff-heavy acid-eaters over the past 40 years, and Slump is certainly in that line. It all opens with a riff that resembles the MC5’s “Black to Comm” and quickly descends/ascends into the dirty sky above beneath inside outside us all. Don’t expect an easy ride—this is gonna be a bumpy but very worthwhile trip. “No Utopia”? There’s a sane slogan for modern America. Whatever explicit message (?) may lie here is buried in volume and psychedelic mud. The hardcore urge beats the messenger to death again. I think that’s a good thing myself. Evolve, baby—evolve! Things ROCK on “(Do the) Sonic Sprawl”—conjures up visions of Philip K. Dick and 1980s Sonic Youth and some sorta (r)evolution (no Utopia!). “Throbbing Reverberation” is the shortest track and another rockin’ jam. The title gives a strong clue. Forward-thinking metal fans should dig this. Imagine Voivod with a LOT of noise in the mix.

The 3-track "Forever" E.P. on Transluscent Red 10" Vinyl is limited to 250 copies and features two new compositions, the title track "Forever" and "My Slum Soul", plus an incendiary new version of an old live favourite "Ink Runs Dry". Folk Devils, the London group that took their name from a well-known academic text on social scapegoating, and who blazed a trail across the UK's independent music scene of the mid-80s with their unique brand of post-punk energy, have returned with their first new music in 35 years. Recorded at London's famous Konk Studios in North London and mixed and co- produced by Grammy Award-winning engineer Rik Simpson, the re-born Folk Devils drew inspiration from the release of their 2016 career retrospective "Beautiful Monsters" and the reactions at subsequent live shows around the UK with kindred spirits Membranes, Inca Babies and The Cravats. Founder members, guitarist Kris Jozajtis and bassist Mark Whiteley, reformed the group by recruiting members of a short-lived 1987 version of Folk Devils; guitarist Nick Clift and drummer John Hamilton. Together with singer Dave Hodgson they soon discovered they had created a well-oiled twin-guitar juggernaut that brimmed with the same restless, twisted blues that characterized the first and second iterations of the band from 1983-87 when they were fronted by the highly underrated and now sadly-departed singer/songwriter Ian Lowery. Hodgson, a fellow transplant from the North-East, had known Lowery in the early 80s prior to Folk Devils, when the two were in their respective post-punk bands Ski Patrol and Parting Shots.

Originally known as the singer, songwriter, and founder of both Lagwagon and BAD Astronaut, Joey Cape has established himself as a recognized solo artist over the past 15 years. His solo ventures have allowed him to stretch the bounds of his musical stylings, highlighting more diverse instrumentation, subdued pace, and experimental elements. The one constant, of course, is his unique ability to craft unforgettable songs. As with pretty much everyone on the planet, 2020 was a challenging year for Joey. At the onset he was going through difficult transitions on multiple fronts. Then the pandemic hits, and Joey finds himself dealing with things he had never experienced before all at once. The result is A Good Year to Forget, a record that encapsulates all the trials and tribulations of the 12 months that inspired it. Written entirely in isolation in a makeshift home recording studio at his mother’s house, Joey Cape was able to create a beautiful, warm record that captures the pure essence of its songs. Hushed and haunted, there’s an almost Nick Drakeian poignancy to these 12 songs, especially on the wistful “The Poetry in Our Mistakes” and the forlorn-yet-somehow-uplifting “Saturday Night Fever.” “Come Home,” a song inspired directly by words his mother had spoken to him on the phone, is a beautifully melancholy, slightly folky tune full of hurt and longing that also manages to be reassuring at the same time. Elsewhere, “Under the Doormat” is a harrowingly beautiful ode to a lost love of the past. “Check Your Ego at the Door” is a ballroom lament steeped in timelessness, while “Fictional” is a scornful take on the false images and lives that proliferate on social media. Despite Joey Cape’s isolation while writing A Good Year to Forget, his fans will hear much more than just a voice, guitar, and bass on this record. Indeed, he ended up playing a plethora of instruments when recording the album, including electric and lap steel guitars, piano, mandolin, and drums. Additional final flourishes were added at fellow Bad Astronaut band member Thom Flowers' studio and Sean MCCUE's Coyote Road Studios. A Good Year to Forget finds the positive in the negatives to become a record of pure triumphant beauty.

Hailing from Los Angeles and coated in a layer of warbled analog glory comes the debut full length album from Smirk, the solo project helmed by Nick Vicario (Public Eye, Crisis Man). These 11 meticulously crafted tracks originally appeared on two small run cassettes in 2020 and have since been remastered at North London Bomb Factory and paired with fresh artwork from Smoking Room. A trebly & wiry punk sound comes into effect straight out of the gate, reminiscent of the early Dangerhouse Records singles as well as the “Bloodstains Across...” comps (to be more precise). But there's far more to Smirk —with great songwriting, precision, and instrumentation that seem to emanate from a past that never was, bursting any preconceived sub-genre bubbles from this reality and those parallel to it. ‘lp’ is a tour de force of bratty, pissed off punk energy.

Formed in 2018, in Los Angeles, California, Section H8 creates gritty and callously honest hardcore punk. Now Section H8 comes with their most definitive statement yet in the form of their debut fulllength, Welcome To The Nightmare. Welcome To The Nightmare is pure hardcore punk at it’s finest, with fast as hell instrumentals that quickly become formidable and pummeling on the turn of a dime. Section H8 have mastered their blend of blistering punk mixed with heavy grooves as found on album opener “Nightmare” or “Mist-Head.” Lyrically, the ten tracks each tell their own story, ranging from personal experiences living in Los Angeles, crime, and death, to the current political divide in America, the legal system and the corruption within it. On Welcome To The Nightmare, Section H8 give an honest and unfiltered look at life through their own eyes, or as vocalist Mexi says, “The goal isn’t to change the world, but to give you a glimpse into our world.” Recorded and mixed by Taylor Young at The Pit Studios in Southern California and mastered by Nick Townsend, Section H8’s debut comes with plenty of surprises among the ten pummeling tracks, such as a standout feature from Tim Armstrong of Rancid on “Street Sweeper” which calls to mind the fast aggression of Rancid (2000). Another curveball found on the full-length is the following track, “Behind The 8 Ball,” which acts as a thank-you list from the band over a grooving riff and gang vocals. Made up of Aldo (guitar), Chris (drums), Dan (bass, vocals), Mexi (vocals), and Ryan (guitar, vocals), Section H8’s members aren’t new to this world by any means—playing in acts such as Product OF Waste, Downpresser, Minus, Human Garbage, and Nomads to name a few—but their

Bristol new wave quartet the Numbers formed in 1977 with vocalist/rhythm guitarist Nick McAuley, bassist Wayne Kingston, drummer Lee Gardener and future Massive Attack guitarist Angelo Bruschini. Heavily influenced by Bowie’s Berlin trilogy, early recordings surfaced on compilations issued by the local Heartbeat label in 1979, namely the power- punk-pop ‘Alternative Suicide’ on 4 Alternatives and the funked-up ‘Cross Slide’ on Avon Calling. This excellent compilation pairs those songs with unreleased demos, giving us the complete picture of a band far ahead of their time, with Bruschini already on dazzling form.

Bristol punk quintet the Cortinas began as an R&B covers band, but soon sped up their repertoire when punk arrived, making them local pioneers. A slot supporting the Stranglers at the Roxy brought them onto Miles Copeland and Mark Perry’s Step Forward label and they later signed to CBS before imploding, guitarist Nick Sheppard then joining the Clash and drummer Daniel Swann San Francisco’s the Sneeches. This ace compilation gathers the best of their early work, including the immortal debut ‘Fascist Dictator’/‘Defiant Pose,’ as well as ‘TV Personalities,’ both in the studio and live. Another crucial piece of the Bristol puzzle!

Stiff Little Fingers "bbc Live In Concert" features two high energy performances from these very influential Northern Irish punk rockers, recorded for the BBC. Fronted by singer and guitarist Jake Burns, the first LP of this 2LP set kicks off with "Roots, Radicals, Rockers & Reggae" from their "Go For It" album, recorded at London’s Paris Theatre in 1981, a venue used for many classic BBC In Concerts. The second LP features an equally raucous show captured at Norwich’s University of East Anglia in the UK in front of a highly appreciative crowd. Los Angeles straight-edge band Berthold City has completed work on their first official full-length When "Words Are Not Enough". With twelve foundational tracks of hard hitting, anthemic hardcore, When Words are Not Enough will solidify Berthold City into the forefront of modern hardcore. The album was recorded and mixed at Jet To Mars Studio by Nick Jett (terror), mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (integrity, Jesus Piece, God’s Hate), completed with cover art and design by Jeremy Dean, and features a guest appearance from Jason Mazzola (count ME Out) on “Left With Nothing” and John Eightclip (allegiance) on “Still Holding On.”

The brand new album 'Back Home' follows on from last month's one-off single 'Happier Still', and the release of their 2020 single 'Cranes in the Sky', a cover of Solange Knowles released on Jack White's Third Man Records. Recorded at Hermitage Works Studios in North London, 'Back Home' was produced and mixed by Margo Broom (Goat Girl, Fat White Family) and features violin courtesy of Charlotte Valentine of the experimental art rock project No Home, who recently collaborated with the LA-based artist Sasami. 'Back Home' is a dramatic leap forward for the band; the band build on their tightly knit, lo-fi punk formula to bring forth a collage of blazing guitars, down tempo dance punk, and melancholic strings that evoke the full depth of the band's expansive art punk vision. The album title references a search for a place to call home, whether real or metaphysical. "We were really ruminating on the idea of a home and what it means," explains Stephanie. "It's about the different ideas of home, whether that's here in the UK, back in Africa or the Caribbean, or a place that doesn't really exist; it's neither here nor there." The band worked with multidisciplinary artist Angelica Ellis to design the striking embroidered cover art, which is a depiction of Chardine's nephew at the barbers. The artwork is a reference to the embroidered wall hangings popular in Caribbean homes post-Windrush that were a callback to the homes they left behind. The album's strength lies in the band's bold and varied new sound. Album opener 'Cactus Tree' is an eerie, gothic folk tale that tells the story of a woman waiting for her lover while a wall of euphoric harmonies and screaming feedback roll in the background. Lead single 'Happier Still' is a driving, Nirvana-influenced track that grapples with the idea of wanting to push through a depressive episode. Delayed by Covid, delayed by manufacturing errors, delayed by existential dread... Hangtown and the Altered State of Reverb are proud to present: Tales From The Gun. Hangtown is a post-apocalyptic spaghetti western surf rock band hailing from San Francisco. Founded in 2016 from a solo album by multi-instrumentalist Robb Grimes (also of SF's thrash metal quartet Asada Messiah). The music envisions a dust blown, post-apocalyptic world, and the sad and twisted stories from the inhabitants therein. Old Man Grimes is joined by long-term collaborators, Nick Poulos, MAT Fogel, Resse Douglas and Sandeep Bhutta, who have crafted together a wild genre-bending live show after years of gigging the West Coast. Tales From The Gun is their first full length album as collaborators, undoubtedly one of the strangest album offerings to come out of the bay area this year. A dark blend of cinematic western music, garage surf punk, and doomy western murder ballads, all from the desolate wasteland known as Hangtown.

In the summer of 1982, an already burgeoning scene in Richmond, VA saw the arrival of some new blood in the form of Graven Image. Taking both inspiration and influence from the hardcore punk explosion that was well underway all over the world, these youngsters who met at a local skate ramp channeled their aggression through the no bullshit hardcore punk that they churned out in their few years of existence. Having shared the stage with a veritable who's who of punk at the time (Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Necros, C.O.C., Void, The Fu's, etc.) throughout the Mid-Atlantic, the band's explosive live performance fronted by the powerful and charismatic Dwayne Curd was evidence that they could hold their own when billed with the aforementioned titans of the genre. the Studio Sessions: '82-'83 features the entirety of GI's recorded studio output—first from the Your Skull Is My Bowl session circa fall of 1982 that became the extremely rare and sought after split tape with fellow local juvenile upstarts Honor Role, and lastly from the Kicked Out Of The Scene EP session that was recorded in 1983 and released the following year, plus some previously unreleased tracks from each of the studio outings that yielded these 22 tracks of Ushc fury! Carefully transferred and restored from the original reels, each record comes with a 12-page booklet chock full of photos, flyers and even some liner notes from guitarist Nick Smilek and drummer Joey Boisineau. For admirers of early American Hardcore and not much else.

What kind of image does “Full Moon Forever” invoke to you? Slightly gothic feels with a sense of timelessness? Good! Then Kepi Ghoulie and friends have succeeded! When Ara Babajian of the Slackers approached Kepi about having an all new challenge, Kepi jumped at the chance to work with his long time friend and drummer hero! Bass player? B-face!!!! With solid rhythm section secured, they started selecting songs that they loved! Years of long backstage chats revealed a common love of some of the “darker” songs of rock’s pop, goth, and new wave eras… the Cure, Cars, Lords of the New Church, Nick Cave all entered the conversation and a group of tunes was selected! Who would produce? Ara wanted to go somewhere new to him, so Kepi and Bface rounded up their old friend Mass Giorgini at Sonic Iguana studios in Lafayette, IN, a colleague who had produced some of Lookout records music in the 90’s and early 2000’s... With 10 songs, also including selections by Nick Cave, Peter Murphy, Lou Reed and Iggy Pop, this little project was actually taking shape! They realized that if they just added David Bowie’s “Heroes” and Trex’ “Cosmic Dancer”, they would have a personal ‘desert island disc’, so they did! The record includes contributions from Ian Fowles (Aquabats, Gerard Way), Prima Donna’s Aaron Minton and Kevin Preston (also currently playing in Green Day), and several other friends, with artwork by artist Tom Neely.

Formed on a grim council estate in Edinburgh in l979 by singer Terry Buchan and guitarist Stevie Ross with bassist Alan Paget and drummer Andy McNiven, The Exploited became one of the most popular and notorious of all hardcore punk bands. When they signed to Secret Records in l98l for debut LP Punks Not Dead, Terry had been replaced by his ex-soldier brother Wattie, with guitarist Big John Duncan, drummer Drum Stix, and bassist Gary McCormack; by the time “Let’s Start A War…” was released, the group featured Wattie’s brother Willie on drums and Billy Dunn on bass, while “Horror Epics” had Wayne Tyas on bass and Karl ‘Egghead’ Morris on guitar. That same line-up is featured on “Live At The Whitehouse”, a riveting and lengthy performance recorded in Washington DC in April l985; highlights include the opening “Let’s Start A War,” a take of “Rival Leaders” aimed at Reagan and Thatcher, “I Hate You” (with a reverse Jello Biafra reference), a castigating “Daily News” aimed at Maximum Rock n Roll, and a rousing “Punks Not Dead” encore.

Emerging from the ashes of the Shark Bait, which contributed with one track on the Stomping At The Klub Foot Vol.5 compilation album, the Irish Psychobilly quartet released this fine rocking album on Links Records back in very early 1989, before vanishing without a trace. A solid mixture of wild and powerful Rockabilly , awesome cover versions and varied sounds and lyrics make Dark Streets real remarkable. On a side note, front man and vocalist Dave Finnegan became a Hollywood star with the blockbuster movie The Commitments. During the late 1970s, after No Wave pioneer Lydia Lunch met saxophonist James Chance, she began setting her angry and disjointed poetry to anti-music, founding her ground-breaking band Teenage Jesus and The Jerks with Lunch’s shouted lyrics matched by her non-conventional use of electric guitar. The group’s self-titled debut EP is a fast and furious affair, produced by Robert Quine of the Voidoids/Lou Reed, with future Nick Cave drummer Jim Sclavunos on bass and Bradley Field on minimalist percussion; steeped in aggression and audacity, it’s an awesome disc that rebuffs punk’s easy cliches and refuses to be categorized. This reissue also includes the ‘Pre’ EP and the tracks from the legendary No New York compilation. Essential!

As we all know, Mr. Bators was the man who destroyed Rocket from the Tombs, from which he hijacked half the members to found one of the most influential American punk bands to have existed, The Dead Boys. Stiv has turned in his broken teeth for a more power pop oriented solo career. This is not an album recorded by a has-been former punk idealist; instead its a true step forward into another unknown arena packing all the glare and attitude that remained from the last. Obnox is dead, long live NOX! Cleveland guitarist/vocalist Lamont Thomas has officially changed the name of his long running no-fi Afropunk / Hip-Hop hybrid Obnox to its longtime nickname NOX—and it makes sense. With almost a decade and a half behind him since he stepped out from behind the drum kit (he made his bones as the rhythmic spine for incendiary Ohio outfits like Bassholes and This Moment IN Black History), Thomas has grown well beyond the childish punk posture of valuing obnoxiousness for it’s own sake—as have many of us, right? Right? But we’ve ALL taken our share of knocks by now. Under the new name, Thomas is, for the first time ever, independently self-releasing his new album Iron Knowledge, the long-brewing follow-up to 2020’s sprawling, face melting, aggressively genre-agnostic 2xLP Savage Raygun, the damn near perfect album for the most messed up year of our lives. Iron Knowledge keeps forging ahead with Thomas’ heavy alloy of garage-punk, gospel, psych, soul, and electronics, enshrouded as always in a heavy dusting of Midwest rust. For years Erik kept a low profile, but never stopped recording music, playing with friends like The Octopus Frontier, or even touring the United States and Europe with Jon Dee Graham. In late 2012, Spring Records released a 4-song EP titled “Free Range” on vinyl, which received rave reviews. Since then, Erik has kept busy putting out more new recordings through his bandcamp page, playing live shows, and touring Spain a couple of times. In 2016, Hanky Panky released “So The Wind Won't Blow It All Away” his first full-length album in over 20 years. The album garnered much critical acclaim and was the #1 album of the year on John Borack's influential “Power Pop Plus List.” After touring Spain in 2017 as Erik Voeks & The Spanglish Settlement, Erik, Juan Ferrari, Pepe Bermejo, and Patrick Hawley decided to record an album together. Plans were made for the four of them to reunite in Spain to finish the album, but the pandemic interfered and the recording process took a long and winding road. But better late than never, as they say: “It Means Nothing To Me Now” was finally released in early 2024 under the Erik Voeks & The Ghosters moniker.. “Pure pop magic,” says the Powerpopaholic website, and who are we to disagree?

"Old City, New Ruins" takes its title from Rome, the city where the band is based. It depicts the contemporary ruins of the capital, yet it's merely a pretext to expose the complexities of everyday life common to Western societies and their major cities, foremost among them. The album unfolds episode by episode, driven by the need to express anger and frustration, but also the antidotes to them. Social references abound, as well as intimate reflections and even profound investigations into the psychoses of the marginalized and abandoned. It tells the story of collective strength, musically expressed through a choral quality that runs deep in the band."Old City, New Ruins" is a unique hardcore album, inspired both by emerging currents of the genre - such as Comeback Kid, Turnstile, Trapped Under Ice - and by the European and Northern European heavy tradition - like Kvelertak, Turbonegro - to the pantheon of influences of Feldspar: Nirvana, Motorhead, Gorilla Biscuits, Slayer and everything in between. The album consists of ten songs, with bellicose episodes alternating with cathartic moments, explosions of energy accompanied by timeless slogans, songs for celebration and songs for war, moments for reflection, and others for denunciation. All of this alternates within the ten tracks preceding the instrumental that gives the album its title, also the final track of the record, a sort of Carpenteresque ballad that serves as the soundtrack to visualize the marvelous and creepy ruins Feldspar speaks of. Production note: for the album, Feldspar worked alongside Nick Terry, a legendary figure in the English music scene, known for his productions with Ian Brown/Stone Roses, The Libertines, Turbonegro, Simian Mobile Disco, Kvelertak, Peaches, and more. His involvement adds international depth to the project. The artwork was entrusted to Chris Wilson, an American illustrator renowned for his work on covers for bands like MindForce, Scowl, Combust, and Gel, essentially the cream of the crop of contemporary American hardcore.

The Hard-Ons were – still are - amazing. Musically, but also for what they were. This multi-cultural band. They were fearless. Ray and Blackie always came to Dirty Three shows in Sydney early on, and I always felt that we were somehow aligned attitude-wise. They were awesome live, with that power that only a trio can have.
