"At the very dawn of the 90s, Love Child's debut 7” made a splash on the burgeoning scene of shambolic bands and lo-fi recordings. Back then, they were mentioned in the same breath as Pavement, Sebadoh, or Beat Happening. But Love Child’s two great albums and sparkling singles have become the stuff of record collectors, unavailable vis streaming and out of print, until now. Never Meant to Be: 1988-1993 pulls from these releases and some unreleased radio sessions, unearthing a trove of lost gems by a band that could be the bestof all of the 90s buried treasures. Culled from their smashing debut 7-inch, their two full-length albums, another great single and some unreleased radio sets (including a Peel Session), Never Meant To Be has catchy hooks, gritty noise, sneakily-deft playing, brainy but blunt lyrics, and lots of other awesome stuff. Love Child were part of lo-fi’s beginnings, but also had the NYC pedigree to absorb predecessors like the Velvet Underground, the Voidoids and Teenage Jesus and the Jerks. (Their swirl of brightness, brains, and brawn led Byron Coley to liken them to a fantasy VU made up of Moe Tucker, Doug Yule, and Angus MacLise). Will Baum started Love Child while a student at Vassar College, bringing on classmates Rebecca Odes and Alan Licht. At first, Baum wrote the majority of the songs, bringing a Modern Lovers-like garage-pop attack to the band’s 19-song whirlwind debut album Okay? (Homestead, 1991) But Odes and Licht contributed songs as well, each with a distinct sonic fingerprint (One fan, Kurt Cobain, allegedly predicted Love Child would become the Fleetwood Mac of the 90s). All three members were happy to trade roles and instruments from song to song, but they also had some specific chops. Licht was a bit of a guitar prodigy, having taught himself how to tap like Eddie Van Halen, but versed enough in punk to know simplicity could be just as powerful. Odes’ bellowing bass was equally prominent, and her vocals could veer quickly from sweet to snarling, like Kim Deal or Georgia Hubley with a jagged edge. Take 'Asking for It' (taken here from a 1992 Peel Session), whose righteous slam makes it a proto-riot-grrrl anthem. Not long after Okay?, Baum left, replaced by drummer Brendan O’Malley. Love Child’s sound evolved too, toward a dronier zone not far from the bubbling haze of then-nascent shoegazers like My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive. On their next album Witchcraft (Homestead, 1992), smart hooks stretched into deeper ruminations, without any loss of brashness. 'Stumbling Block' turned a riff into a minimalist mantra, while 'Wait and See' took two melodies–one sung by Licht, one by Odes–and weaved them into the band’s most hypnotic moment on record. Love Child didn’t last long past Witchcraft, though it's not 100% sure that they're fully done (Alan and Rebecca have been rumored to be playing together again). But until that comeback emerges, Never Meant To Be should satisfy fans and newcomers for a long time."—Marc Masters

Self-designated as “Bangkok Evilcore,” WHISPERS, based out of Thailand, are bringing an immense sound to modern metallic hardcore. Originally formed in 2014, the band picked up steam in 2021 with the release of their Narok Bon Din EP grabbing international attention. Now WHISPERS join the growing roster of pivotal heavy-music label Flatspot Records for the release of Yom Ma-Lok!Hitting the studio in spring 2024, WHISPERS set out to make a heavy, intense record that connects on an emotional level. The 57-member neural necromancers Itchy-O have returned to unleash Sypherlot / Hallowmass 2020, a double-live album recorded during the chaos collective’s groundbreaking 2020 drive-in concert series. It was against this backdrop of isolation and suspended reality that Itchy-O heeded the call for a radical evolution in shared catharsis and new sonic experiments: short-band radio broadcast turned each car interior into a private listening experience for a post-apocalyptic simulation, while roving bands of mysterious beings opened a temporary escape portal with contactless chaos, engulfing each and every vehicle in rite and ritual for the ages. The main objective of the band at that time was to document their work and then disappear. Luckily for us they were on the cusp of changing the face of rock forever. For this reworking, Paul Hamann at Suma has transferred from the original 2-track analogue mix tapes to digital at the highest resolution available which, is at least four times the resolution of the original. The tracks have carefully been re-mastered by sonic architect Brian Pyle so as to capture the unique qualities within.

Los Angeles straight-edge band Berthold City has completed work on their first official full-length When "Words Are Not Enough". With twelve foundational tracks of hard hitting, anthemic hardcore, When Words are Not Enough will solidify Berthold City into the forefront of modern hardcore. Pirates Press Records is thrilled to welcome Santa Cruz, CA’s Northern Soul outfit THE Inciters to the Pirates Family! This ten-piece combo of veteran players has been filling dance floors globally since the mid ’90s, electrifying audiences across the spectrum of skins, rudies, punks, mods, and rockers alike. No strangers to playing side by side with ska, punk, and Oi! bands, they are a natural fit to help expand Pirates Press Records’ roster of soul artists. “We wanted to keep it feeling live, not a ‘live album,’ but our energy. We recorded as much as possible all together. We had the rhythm section in the main room, the horns in a booth (a big booth), but [there was] also a large window so the horns could see the rhythm section. All the horns recorded at the same time so we could capture the feel. The singers were in another booth.” says trumpeter Rick Kendrick. “There was the usual overdubbing and whatnot, but for the most part this captures our energy...I guess you could say our ‘soul!’” These recordings are by far the band’s best work - capturing the energy and spontaneity of their live show—11 tracks of upbeat, hard-partyin’ soul stompers! The band can also be caught doing what they do best, embarking on their first European tour in over five years following the release of the LP.

San Diego has a rich history of hardcore dating back to Amenity during the Reagan era, to Unbroken, House OF Suffering, and Struggle in the ’90s, to Over MY Dead Body, Take Offense, and Mizery in the 2000s. Over the past four decades, the Pacific Northwest has been responsible for producing a specific sound and mindset that has permeated throughout hardcore. This tradition has been passed down the upper echelon of Interstate 5 by bands such as Brotherhood, Undertow, and Trial. The tradition has endured in modern times, but has not seen a worthy predecessor since the youth-crew revival of the mid-2000s. Enact is a straightedge hardcore band from Portland, Oregon, who have taken up the mantle of continuing the area’s legacy with veteran members of the West Coast hardcore scene whos contributions include bands like Blue Monday, GET THE Most, Cutting Through, Dying FOR IT, Dance FOR Destruction, and Xcauterizex. On the record, the Pacific Northwest tradition can be heard in guitarist Kyle’s songwriting, which can be attributed to his tenure in the area; however, Enact draws influence from the Revelation Records/1980s hardcore scene through bands like Bold and Judge, with the refreshing melodic elements found in bands like Burn and Turning Point. The lyrics are channeled through the lens of singer Rikki’s lived experience as a Chicana and include ideas about straight edge as a catalyst for personal growth and healing from trauma, intersectional veganism, challenges to political apathy, and gun violence’s connection to toxic masculinity. The band and label are proud to release this crucial expression of radical politics and urgent ideals. Enact believes that amplifying the voices of Bipoc is essential to hardcore and punk and is dedicated to the work of forging a safe and inclusive community.

During the mid-"70s, Switzerland had embraced punk withinits cities, informing the subsequent post-punk era of the1980s as music splintered into free form musical strands across the whole of the country. It was to become one of themost innovative periods in Switzerland"s modern day music history.It was unfiltered creativity and this free, non-commercial approach is a common denominator for the songs on this compilation. Many artists operated in their own universe; hardly any of the acts on this album actually met each other at the time. Only Liliput from ZuIêrich achieved notable fame, building on the success of their previous incarnation as Kleenex.

For starters, don't let the name fool you, this is Richmond, VA—not L.A. Coinciding with the beginning of the 1980s, the spread of punk's mutation into the harsher exertion known as hardcore punk began to spill across the continental United States. The music was becoming harder and faster, straying from the style and formula that some of the younger participants were starting to grow bored of and Richmond was no exception to this phenomena. Following the 1981 implosions of local punk groups MOD Subs and Disruptors, the illustrious Mike Rodriguez formed RED Cross alongside friends Frank Gresham, Scott Price and Alford Faulkner. Their mission: to create and play hardcore punk adhering to the motto of "loud Fast Rules" and they did just that! The next year or so saw the band leaving a trail of broken glass and harshed mellows throughout the greater metropolitan Richmond area, to put it lightly. In early 1982, the boys entered Studio 2 at Union Theological Seminary under the cover of night to record 12 tracks that were intended to be the band's debut 12". Alas, as bands tend to do, they eventually broke up due to internal conflicts, which led to the almost immediate formation of Richmond legends White Cross; arguably the final form of Mikey Rod's drive to create fast, hard and ugly music." Includes a 16 page booklet featuring extensive liner notes by surviving members Frank Gresham and Scott Price.

Missiles fire off their debut album "Weaponize Tomorrow" on Svart Records

Malmö’s Missiles are set to release their inaugural album, "Weaponize Tomorrow", on May 10, 2024, under the banner of Svart Records.

The members of Missiles are no new kids on the block. Coming from punk, rock, and metal, as well as surf and rather diverse backgrounds, they all answered to the call of their good friend Gabriel Forslund - sincerely interested in doing something new and exciting together. The band's trajectory began with a 7" single released by the Swedish label Fetish in 2016. Initially viewed as a project, Missiles have organically evolved into a fully dedicated band with a laser-guided focus, causing shock waves in the underground with their jet-fuel genre-clash. Combining abandoned sounds with new inventions on “Weaponize Tomorrow”, Missiles promises to both pat you on the head and stab you in the back, delivering a unique blend of post-punk with a touch of goth rock.

Having formed in early 2020 and featuring a crew of members with long-term associations to the London punk scene, The Chisel quickly secured a reputation as one of the most exciting bands from a pool of contemporaries that includes Chubby & The Gang, Stingray and Big Cheese. Their sound is rooted firmly in Punk but with influences that run across the board to create a distinctive blend of Oi!, anarcho, UK-82 and hardcore. Retaliation is an unmistakably British record that draws a line from 1982 up to the present day, pushing its way into your collection and torching your stereo. Opening with the agitated force of 'Unlawful Execution', the tone is firmly set by a song that addresses the brutality of the Met Police ("Tell me what's the difference between right or wrong / When a copper gets to blast a lad who did nothing wrong"). 'Come See Me' is a ferocious ode to camaraderie in the face of mouthy boneheads and bellends. 'Shit Life Syndrome' is a poisoned reference to the same cynical phrase used by physicians to describe the effects of people living under poverty and in the grips of substance abuse ("How can you expect people to act nicely, they've all been left on the edge of society"). It's one of many songs influenced by singer Cal's experiences of growing up in the working-class town of Blackpool. Cal states: "Blackpool as a town is often overlooked or even looked down upon, I wanted to write lyrics which gave the people of my town a voice". After countless hours of data driven market research it was determined that the wild success of the first Retail Simps album, Reverberant Scratch was 82.6% due to the cheeky and iconic album cover, as such the group was faced with a dilemma. Using focus groups funded by the Center for Odd Human Behaviour (cohb), the group surmised that the man pictured on said cover, none other than Montreal born chanteur JOE Chamandi, reminded the typical unsophisticated commoner of their ne’er do well uncle, and it is this sense of uncanny familiarity that drove people to purchase the record. Upon first needle drop it was revealed to house an abhorrent and obfuscatingly decrepit take on roots rock.
