"At the very dawn of the 90s, Love Child's debut 7” made a splash on the burgeoning scene of shambolic bands and lo-fi recordings. Back then, they were mentioned in the same breath as Pavement, Sebadoh, or Beat Happening. But Love Child’s two great albums and sparkling singles have become the stuff of record collectors, unavailable vis streaming and out of print, until now. Never Meant to Be: 1988-1993 pulls from these releases and some unreleased radio sessions, unearthing a trove of lost gems by a band that could be the bestof all of the 90s buried treasures. Culled from their smashing debut 7-inch, their two full-length albums, another great single and some unreleased radio sets (including a Peel Session), Never Meant To Be has catchy hooks, gritty noise, sneakily-deft playing, brainy but blunt lyrics, and lots of other awesome stuff. Love Child were part of lo-fi’s beginnings, but also had the NYC pedigree to absorb predecessors like the Velvet Underground, the Voidoids and Teenage Jesus and the Jerks. (Their swirl of brightness, brains, and brawn led Byron Coley to liken them to a fantasy VU made up of Moe Tucker, Doug Yule, and Angus MacLise). Will Baum started Love Child while a student at Vassar College, bringing on classmates Rebecca Odes and Alan Licht. At first, Baum wrote the majority of the songs, bringing a Modern Lovers-like garage-pop attack to the band’s 19-song whirlwind debut album Okay? (Homestead, 1991) But Odes and Licht contributed songs as well, each with a distinct sonic fingerprint (One fan, Kurt Cobain, allegedly predicted Love Child would become the Fleetwood Mac of the 90s). All three members were happy to trade roles and instruments from song to song, but they also had some specific chops. Licht was a bit of a guitar prodigy, having taught himself how to tap like Eddie Van Halen, but versed enough in punk to know simplicity could be just as powerful. Odes’ bellowing bass was equally prominent, and her vocals could veer quickly from sweet to snarling, like Kim Deal or Georgia Hubley with a jagged edge. Take 'Asking for It' (taken here from a 1992 Peel Session), whose righteous slam makes it a proto-riot-grrrl anthem. Not long after Okay?, Baum left, replaced by drummer Brendan O’Malley. Love Child’s sound evolved too, toward a dronier zone not far from the bubbling haze of then-nascent shoegazers like My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive. On their next album Witchcraft (Homestead, 1992), smart hooks stretched into deeper ruminations, without any loss of brashness. 'Stumbling Block' turned a riff into a minimalist mantra, while 'Wait and See' took two melodies–one sung by Licht, one by Odes–and weaved them into the band’s most hypnotic moment on record. Love Child didn’t last long past Witchcraft, though it's not 100% sure that they're fully done (Alan and Rebecca have been rumored to be playing together again). But until that comeback emerges, Never Meant To Be should satisfy fans and newcomers for a long time."—Marc Masters

In 1979, two school-kids all hopped-up on punk-rock started their own group in their hometown of Hawthorne, Los Angeles (birthplace of the Beach Boys) and soon found themselves opening shows for notorious scene pioneers Black Flag. Jeff McDonald was fifteen, his brother Steven McDonald only eleven. But that didn’t stop their group from becoming one of the most remarkable, enduring and unique outfits punk-rock ever belched up.

With their latest full length offering, Great Disasters, they aim to silence the doubters and unbelievers, and they hit their mark dead on. Their first LP since 2017’s Obstinate, Great Disasters is a filler-free, 25 minute tour de force that perfectly exemplifies the qualities that have made AntiSeen such an enduring presence in the underground. Sabotage Organized Barbarian, best known by their acronym S.O.B were part of a hardcore punk movement in the 80s that envigorated Japanese youth along with other acts like Gism and Gauze. The ravaging tempos and punishing aural densities grappled with the ears, and their sphere of influence quickly broke the banks of their native Osaka, with acts like Napalm Death acknowledging the bands importance for their own sound and grindcore to come.

In 1988, S.O.B teamed up with Alchemy Records founder Jojo Hiroshige, and his prolific Japanoise band Hijokaidan to form S.O.B Kaidan. With Hiroshige’s crushing distortion squeals stacked on top of S.O.B’s high-tempo percussive aggression, the two made quick work of anything that dared to obstruct their path at the cross-sections of hardcore and noise.

Their only LP Noise Violence and Destroy remains the only relic of their collaboration, and has become hard to find. The initial batch of 3000 LPs were quickly snapped up, and the brief CD runs that followed are now rare items. As part of the Alchemy Records Essential Collections series, P-vine is thrilled to reissue Noise Violence and Destroy on limited edition vinyl for the first time with an iconic Japanese obi strip attached.

2022 classic black vinyl repress of reissue of 1987's opera rock by Spain's legendary punk band Eskorbuto.Housed in a controversial gatefold sleeve, the double LP is a political satirical work against any kind of dictatorial regime."Los demenciales chicos acelerados" is Eskorbuto's fourth studio album, originally released by Discos Suicidas in 1987. It was their most ambitious project, a double LP rock opera in the vein of "Quadrophenia" by their beloved The Who. It tells the story of an unscrupulous young man who wishes to achieve power at all costs, stepping over everyone and everything in order to do whatever he wants politically. In the end, he falls due to his ego and is betrayed by those around him. Hence lines such as "crowds are a nuisance", "I'll come unscathed out of the attacks planned by my image consultant" or "shouting in front of the scum".In 1988 band members Iosu and Juanma narrated the album's concept and story on a Radio Euskadi show, the Basque Country's public broadcaster. This satirical political plot also explains the controversial Nazi pictures on the front and back covers. Eskorbuto were equalling the unprincipled politician of their rock opera with the Nazis and Franco's dictatorship. It's a conceptual record that attacks any kind of dictatorial political regime.Although "Los demenciales..." came out on Discos Suicidas, in typical Eskorbuto fashion the band stole a copy of the master and sold it to the Twins label, which also released it a few months later with a different cover. The original sleeve caused some trouble, to say the least, with its combination of Nazi photos and the Spanish flag on the back accompanied by the words "Of national interest".The album contains new versions of a few previous tracks such as 'Ratas rabiosas' and 'Enterrado vivo' plus the studio version of 'Más allá del cementerio'. Originally released in 1983, SUB is the most iconic Brazilian punk compilation ever. It's the first official recording of Ratos de Porao, and the only studio recording of Psykoze and Fogo Cruzado in the 80s. It features the most famous and classic songs from Cólera, who will be touring Europe again in August 2023. Remastered from the original master tapes at the legendary El Rocha studios in Sao Paulo.It has 4 bonus tracks from the pre-recording, comes with a rare poster, an insert with lyrics, and a great new text written by Pedro Carvalho. This is the first time SUB is being released in Europe.SUB is the most classic Brazilian punk compilation, recorded between 1982 and 1983. It was conceived and brought to fruition by Redson, the guitarist and vocalist of Cólera, who is considered one of the key figures in South American punk. Besides Co?lera, Redson invited Fogo Cruzado, Ratos de Pora?o and Psyko?ze, three of the most promising and active unrecorded bands at the time. If Co?lera was the most experienced band in the scene at the time, Fogo Cruzado had already left its mark as one of the best, if not the best in terms of skill and stage presence. Similarly, Ratos de Pora?o and Psyko?ze on the other hand were younger and had fed on the new ways of punk from the get-go. In the summer of 1982, an already burgeoning scene in Richmond, VA saw the arrival of some new blood in the form of Graven Image. Taking both inspiration and influence from the hardcore punk explosion that was well underway all over the world, these youngsters who met at a local skate ramp channeled their aggression through the no bullshit hardcore punk that they churned out in their few years of existence. Cold Shoulder is a hardcore band from Toronto, Canada, formed in 2016. Within that time, they have presented three outstanding releases: the T.O.H.C. EP in 2016 and Self War LP in 2017, which were recorded, mixed, and mastered by Nick Jett of Terror, as well as the Backlash EP, which was mastered by Joel Grind of Toxic Holocaust. In addition to their recorded output, Cold Shoulder has completed multiple tours from coast to coast of the United States. They’ve been a part of large festivals such as the Vans Warped Tour in Toronto, Tulsa, OK’s Flyover Fest, and Snow & Flurry in Fargo, ND. In 2019, Cold Shoulder released a two-song tape including the tracks “Primitive” and “Absent Mind” on Safe Inside Records. Fast forward through 2020, landing at the tail end of 2021, Cold Shoulder finds itself a new home at New Age Records, dropping their second full-length album Primal Fury. Ten jaw-dropping tracks laced with rage and yes, “fury” wrapped inside a tornado ready to make landfall. The band has already set their sights on expanding upon their foothold of the hardcore landscape with even more tours and larger shows.

“The origin of this record is a weird one. In 2019, we had just returned from two long European tours when we decided to take a ‘little break’ from the road. You all know what happened next. That ‘little break’ turned into a couple of years and during that time Dane, our drummer, decided to quit the band and music in general (no hard feelings). Sean [Hoffman] and I had a discussion and thought about ending the band as a whole, but I knew I had to go out on my own terms. I had an ace in the hole, though. Jeff Murray, drummer from LA rippers The Shrine. I had been friends with Jeff and The Shrine’s founder, Josh Landau since our ‘Scavenger’ 7-inch came out, around 2012. We had run into them in Berlin a few months back and I knew they weren’t playing anymore. I called Josh first, ’cause asking a dude if you can take his drummer, is like asking your girlfriend’s dad if you can marry her. And Josh said ‘go for it.’ And Jeff was in.

“Honestly if he had said no, that would have been the end. I had written a ton of stuff since our last album but I had shelved most of it. I was trying too hard—basically. Eventually Sean, Jeff and I said, ‘Fuck it, let’s make a ‘Fake Live’ record—like Kiss or Slayer did. John Dwyer from Osees was opening his new studio, Discount Mirrors, and it seemed like the perfect place to record it. We settled on re-recording a bunch of old stuff while simultaneously demoing our new material, as the three of us were now starting to really get in the groove. The result is Strange Masters Vol. 1.

This one landed the Simps in W.B.A. (world builders anonymous) after total and utter detachment from reality ensued. After copious amounts of blind encouragement from their label boss and his peers (all victims of half-Zheimers) and trace amounts of measurable success (money? no sir), the groups’ egos were operating at a loss, or at least a state of confusion. Faced with the pitfalls of modern drudgery and the music industry’s impending and unrelenting judgement, their perseverance was yet again tested. Through the magical transportive inspiration of rock n roll, our unequivocally handsome protagonists found salvation thrice. R n B stimulation, ponk agitation and slop rock demonstration saved them from themselves, from the downcast stares of detractors, from the cruelness of the everyday. Art as therapy for the clinically insane. A functional state of illness is the bottom line of this cultural achievement. Herein, the band exercises the democratic tools they learnt in their formative years as craftsmen and apply them broadly to a new swath of material. The crucial pin prick guitar, exasperated (ing) vocal maelstrom and beatific pounding of the previous 2 slabs carry over, but new strategies in expounding are implicated for varied and freewheeling results. The spotlight has been flayed, with every simp performing dutifully on the microphone, every simp sitting behind the drumthrone, every simp penning refrains, every simp trading high end for low and visa versa. They have triggered an uncanny singularity. The Weasel Walter Large Ensemble debuted on Igneity - After The Fall Of Civilization (april 2015): Brandon Lopez and Tim Dahl on double bass, Alan Licht, Henry Kaiser and Chris Welcome on guitars, the quartet sax of Chris Pitsiokos, Jim Sauter, Matt Nelson and Michael Foster, Steve Swell on trombone, Peter Evans on trumpet and Dan Peck on tuba.

“‘Igneity’ was composed in response to Henry Kaiser asking me if I would assemble a big band, rather than a small group, for us to play a concert with in New York. I had previously included him in the large ensembles I had led when I lived in Oakland, California. However, I had not yet tackled the format in New York City. There is certainly no shortage of excellent players around here, but unlike the Bay Area, logistics tend to be somewhat more complicated, especially when it comes to rehearsal. As such, I set about devising an hour long structure which would allow me to control the general momentum and the various densities inherent in the orchestration while granting the individuals maximum freedom.”
