Black Mercy “The Curse” (Side A) Description: Black Mercy, an Austin-based band formed in 2019, brings a fierce blend of fast-paced, raw hardcore and punk energy on their new LP “The Curse”, recorded at Adrian Quesada’s studio Electric Deluxe. Embodying the spirit of Minor Threat or Circle Jerks, with the chaotic sensibilities of seeing Clikatat Ikatowi or Unwound blowing out an amplifier. Every song has twists and turns on this record, with one stand out track, “Lost” where they bring the tempo down to where Sleep lives. Band OF Bastards “American Carnage” (Side B) Description: Band of Bastards, formed in 2018, is a powerhouse hardcore punk band from Austin, Texas, known for their short, explosive tracks and high-octane performances. They recorded their new record “American Carnage” with drummer Sam Rich at the helm, and the result is nothing short of brilliant. Drawing on their diverse backgrounds, vocalist Jason Reece delivers a potent mix of hardcore punk with a modern edge, driving home the message that the world is still imperfect, and you have to give a shit. The band’s music is fast, aggressive hardcore punk with influences from early Dischord records and first-wave hardcore bands, with notable tracks like “Minor" and “fyp". On Corner Tactics Billiam delivers what is undoubtedly his best work yet, 14 tracks of weirdo synth punk goodness to blow your speakers out to. The ability to wear your influences on your sleeve while still creating something entierly original is a skill very few are able to master but time after time Billy makes it seem like child’s play, seamlessly weaving Devo, The Fall, and Useless Eaters into what can only be described as 'Billiamwave'.

Beach Rats are five punk rock lifers in an Asbury Park, NJ basement making a riot of their own, with a membership that includes impossible-to-avoid New Jersey punk stalwarts. “We all live at the beach; we see each other all the time. We’re friends and we enjoy getting together and creating stuff on the fly,” says guitarist Brian Baker. Beach Rats features members of Bad Religion, Bouncing Souls and Lifetime, and “Rat Beat” is the lead single from the band’s upcoming new album out this July.

The word ‘legendary’ is bandied around far too lazily and conveniently these days. But, in the case of Antisect: legendary is precisely what they are! As a band/collective, they sit right up there with other great names from the raging era of early 80s true ‘anti-establishment’ punk rock such as Discharge, Flux Of Pink Indians, Subhumans, Rudimentary Peni and even Crass, in terms of the impact they have had over the years. This, their debut album was released forty years ago in the paranoid year that was 1984. It is, without doubt, a classic combination of autonomous philosophy and hardcore thrash. But there is more to the album than just that. For more than two decades, Anberlin has remained a formidable force in the alt-rock world, boasting a wildly devoted fanbase who’ve come to rely on the raw, cathartic power of their music. On the massively anticipated Vega—the first album in ten years from vocalist Stephen Christian, guitarists Joseph Milligan and Christian McAlhaney, bassist Deon Rexroat, and drummer Nathan Young—the Florida-bred band delivers a body of work forged with an explosive, new energy, thanks in part to the addition of singer Matty Mullins (the Memphis MAY Fire frontman who’s stepped in as live vocalist for Anberlin, following Christian’s announcement that he’ll no longer tour fulltime). The legendary hardcore punk band returns with four new songs that sound like classic and future AN, stripped down and sped up to their trademarked urgency and live violence. With stream of conscious lyrics and existential dread, these are revival songs for the modern disenchanted. The band’s volatile mix of traditional American hardcore, dark aesthetics, and singer Wesley Eisold’s (cold Cave) emotional lyrical prose set a new creative standard for the worldwide hardcore community. "How I Got Away" recalls AN's anthemic hardcore sound a la tracks "We Are" and "The World Is Blue." "Self Check-Out" is a minute-long punk blister. "Real Love" flies like speed fueled Stooges and "Praying Hands..." nods to the influences of Bad Brains and Negative Approach. Having started in 2000 and initially breaking up in 2004, the band reunited in 2012 and subsequently launched a second life of lauded shows and records proving that there is life after youth. Following hot on the heels of Ethbo's excursion to Russia, with Letov, Suchillin and Pillayev, Howard Williams' Ethbo swivels its telescope to Deptford, South London in 1978.

The band Alternative TV were, and remain, a radical creative force. Originally formed by Mark Perry (Mark P), and Alex Fergusson (later of Psychic TV) in the early days of punk, when Perry was editor of the pioneering punk fanzine, Sniffin' Glue.

Early rehearsals were held in Throbbing Gristle's Industrial Records studio, with Genesis P-Orridge on drums. After line-up changes, the 1978 release of Life After Life saw Dennis Burns on bass, Chris Bennett on drums, Kim Turner on guitar and Mark P. on vocals. The session was produced by prolific Trojan Records artist and producer Joe Sinclair, and released on the independent label Deptford Fun City Records.

The song presents a “conscious” lyric through an urban music form of its time. And here’s the result, more than 40 years on, the dub still rocks. Perry’s vocal, like no other from the punk era, talks of the afterlife, in a twisted nod to Nietzsche, he chants “Wake Me Up When We Are Dead”.

A Venn diagram of Mark P and Mark E Smith, leader of The Fall, would show some common ground. Both band leaders survived numerous member changes throughout the decades, had a baleful eye on the producers and consumers of their music, and expressed themselves through a poetic, existential form of lyric writing and musical experimentation. In the early days Smith cited Alternative TV in a list of favourite music - alongside Johnny Cash.

You'd think Jake Robertson would already have his hands full playing in the likes of Ausmuteants, Leather Towel, School Damage, Drug Sweat et al. But no, evidently there's always time for one more thoroughly wracked project, and Alien Nose Job's focus is as kaleidoscopically scattershot as you'd expect from a man with such a short attention span. Just to confirm: yes, that's a good thing. From the off, we glide through the Coneheads-style Devocore of Television Sets before romping through the jangling lo-fi pop of Weight of the World, which skips and mopes while making like The Clean setting light to their parents' carpet with a magnifying glass. There's also charmingly scruffy soul-pop, chugging sci-fi slop-punk, straight-up college rock balladry and much, much more. But these aren't sketches or tossed-off genre exercises. They're bona fide works of consummate skill that resonate sincerely and effortlessly. Essentially, each song sounds like a challenge to the one that follows, a cry of 'step the fuck up'; Suddenly Everything is Twice as Loud is a treasure trove of mini-masterpieces. Rough as fuck mini-masterpieces, sure, recorded with a cheap drum machine and guitars that sound like rusty drills cutting through power cables, but mini-masterpieces nonetheless. When venerable doyens of the pop establishment make albums of such eclectic scope and genuine songwriting talent, they get called geniuses. When punk as fuck wiseguys like Robertson pull it off, words like 'maverick' get tossed around. Rest assured, his Alien Nose Job project covers both angles. This second album is an instant classic that deserves to be heard far beyond the underground - but if it isn't, who cares? He's probably playing in another seven bands already by the time you read this. I've not heard them yet either, but I can tell you they're all fucking amazing. Just buy this record and join the cult. Containing the hits that were only deemed misses by the critics that condemned Oi! as some kind of subcultural fad that favoured football and violence way above the bloody good tunes that should by rights occupy the higher rank, 4 Skins, The Unreleased Radio & Studio Sessions encapsulates that energy at its finest. From formidable swarms of police brutality and political injustice, the underlying (and unyielding) socio-political messages experienced from the streets that resonated with every estranged clockwork skinhead of the day are bound to be ticked on every track. After the atmospheric crash of One Law for Them, dropped in amongst the Radio and blistering Bumper Sessions with Evil sitting squarely in its unpolished centre is the ska-inflected gallop of Seems To Me, an unreleased tune reinforcing the notion that there was more to Oi! than meets the laces.

I’m not living my life so good, tell me, how about you?’ What can we really say about 14th Wish, how did this band even exist? This record and band were Completely unknown up until the last couple of years, when we were approached by a notorious record fiend who was looking for more info after our official release of David Peel’s King of Punk LP. Here we have a band with no paper trail, zero online search results, and released in a tiny quantity on Orange Records in 1980, right alongside the first GG Allin and Eddie Criss Group LPs. But instead of a stylized gutter glam workout with a hot-shot studio guitarist, 14th Wish trip over themselves with a snotty/sloppy amateurism that veers farther into the beloved ‘Killed By Death’ arena, with it’s sweltering TAPEWORM-style lead guitar freak-outs.
Fronted by the mysterious figure known as Halo Peace, both 14th Wish tracks offer a refreshing mid-tempo crud-punk slop-take on the sounds swirling around the drain of the Lower East Side at the end of the 1970s. Although both tracks aren’t lightning fast, their instant ominous catchiness and absolutely sordid and squalorous guitar tone suggests a more murderous background, as well. Mention of this record just drew blanks across from the board, from all of the rare punk record dealers, to the most avid international collectors, and even NYC scene members from the time. Never even turned up in a Mike Bastarache Want List! And of course, the internet was no help either. Was this really one that Everyone missed?
