Lead cuts, "Distant Dawn" and "Vital Fall" showcase the range and dexterity that Ohio seems to inherently cultivate, but tracks like "Forever Silent" (featuring Angie Willcutt from Artificial Go and Rod) and the finale, "No Necessities", are like a death trip from the cosmos down to the factory floor. Not much has been written written about the conceptual hardcore band inspired by and named after a 9th century antisocial loner monk-poet of China’s Tang dynasty. Han-shan [the band] existed from 1991 to ‘93 in California. Their lyrics covered themes of solitude, mystery, poverty, and discord, directly inspired by the verses of the titular poet. Han-shan’s music was psychopathic, with blood-curdling vocals, and messy but powerful, in the vein of Void, Siege or Septic Death. The band played to the absolute limits of their physical ability and then some, with a sound that complemented their West Coast contemporaries—bands like Heroin, Mohinder, Second Story Window, Antioch Arrow and Angel Hair. Recorded in San Diego by Matt Anderson in late 1993 and originally released posthumously in early 1994 on the tiny Soledad record label, Hans-shan’s eight song seven inch EP came packaged in a manila envelope, each one hand-printed with a woodcut block and roller, with the art and insert referencing both the poet and Tang dynasty China. LG Records has carefully reproduced this cover art and returned to the original multitrack tape. Tim Green has remixed the recording at Louder Studios for a significantly more powerful, and yes, Louder, 12” 45rpm release. Members of Han-shan had previously been in Suckerpunch, Brain Tourniquet, End of the Line, and John Henry West; and went on to play in Behead The Prophet Nlsl, Solid Gold, Drunk Horse, Astral, Tight Bro’s from Way Back When, Sex/Vid, Very Paranoia, Low Plateau and Nudity. Though he only released a few singles (on the legendary independent labels Bus Stop & Parasol) and the classic 1993 album “Sandbox” (recorded with a cast of friends that included Adam Schmitt, Patrick Hawley, Jay Bennett, Steve Scariano and Nick Rudd), Erik Voeks’ music has resonated deeply with a small but dedicated group of pop and powerpop fans around the world. “Lost treasure,” “hidden gem” are expressions often used to describe “Sandbox,” which is now, for the first time in its 30th anniversary, being reissued on vinyl by Hanky Panky Records along with a CD that brings together 8 demos of the album, his two singles for the Bus Stop label and a previously unreleased original track, “Pristine”. For years Erik kept a low profile, but never stopped recording music, playing with friends like The Octopus Frontier, or even touring the United States and Europe with Jon Dee Graham. In late 2012, Spring Records released a 4-song EP titled “Free Range” on vinyl, which received rave reviews. Since then, Erik has kept busy putting out more new recordings through his bandcamp page, playing live shows, and touring Spain a couple of times. In 2016, Hanky Panky released “So The Wind Won't Blow It All Away” his first full-length album in over 20 years. The album garnered much critical acclaim and was the #1 album of the year on John Borack's influential “Power Pop Plus List.” After touring Spain in 2017 as Erik Voeks & The Spanglish Settlement, Erik, Juan Ferrari, Pepe Bermejo, and Patrick Hawley decided to record an album together. Plans were made for the four of them to reunite in Spain to finish the album, but the pandemic interfered and the recording process took a long and winding road. You don’t have to be a genius to figure out what kind of sonic wares a dude who goes by Egg Idiot is peddling. But that doesn’t mean this gooey Leipzig freak is a one-note act. Over the 16 tracks that make up this debut LP—composed of re-recordings of songs from earlier cassettes—you’ll be taken on quite the lo-fi journey. Yes, you can expect plenty of squiggly power-poppin egg punk in the vein of Cherry Cheeks or Billiam, but you’ll also come across some denser polyrhythmic numbers not too far from something off an early Uranium Club release, a couple of slacker rock jams, what sounds like a contemporary take on ‘90s cassette punk, and even some stuff that borders on oddball industrial. Svart Records is releasing Nausea’s two legendary EPs in 12” format for the first time ever, including the Cybergod 7” from 1991 - with a bonus track, "Here Today," from the same recording sessions - and the Lie Cycle 7” from 1992. The Cybergod lineup might be the most legendary era of Nausea, where the tracks reach almost epic proportions. The EP is pretty much the blueprint of crust, where Vic Venom’s hypnotic and rocking guitar riffs meet the tribal drumming of Roy Mayorga. Al’s and Amy’s dueling vocals spit out timeless issues dealing with consumerism and the hypocrisies of organized religions. Musically, the Lie Cycle EP rocks out more in the faster and straightforward style, where Discharge meets Motörhead, and lyrics reflect the times when war and nuclear destruction are still the plague of mankind.

Nausea’s timeline lasted only seven years, but they managed to create a cult following with their true dedication to the punk scene and played shows in the squats of Europe and the eastern part of Europe. With wistful eyes they’re seen pushing strollers through to the suburbs, far away from dirty dens credible dark nooks and shitty toilets. To mend this rapidly declining rock image they´ve decided to release what they consider to be their worst album so far: A collection of B-songs that have never made the list when assembling the list of Norwegian Grammy nominated classics. This upcoming album is nothing less of a wonderful bouquet of contemptuous elegies who haven't yet found a place on the big, dark web. Truth be told the opinionated armor GBZ has been hiding behind was mostly for show, they’ve always beat around the bush – or as we say in Norwegian: had a walk around the porridge.

"The wash of flangers & shimmery reverb have been the foundation in Cali psych ever since the Byrds went electric. And while that sound might've dropped off occasionally, it never dropped out. The Velvets minimalist stylings were infused into the mix by The Dream Syndicate in the early 80's & thus a game changer was born. Clay Allison, Opal, Green On Red all took their charge from that current. Then the Shoegaze scene of the 90's looked at those bands as vectors, things got a little more drenched, so yet more seeds were sown into the fertile terroir. Cut to current climes & the bay area is teeming with the latest iterations: Children Maybe Later, Now, & Cindy easily come to mind. But curiously the band most steeped in the mohair constitution is April Magazine, who (thus far) have been content in the shadows. Up till now they've seemed like characters plucked out of a Kazuo Ishiguo novel-mysterious & ethereal-but perhaps this pressing of last year's cassette only release will flush them out. 'Wesley's Convertible Tape For The South' shows the band defly balancing all those that have come before them while also incorporating flourishes of Les Rallizes DeNudes, Hallelujahs & Nagisa Ni Te into the pageantry . So in a way, April Magazine is transforming the landscape yet again; denser, fuzzier, lush & wistfully challenging. High-level reissue of one of the legendary and world-renowned bands that emerged in Australia, essential for any lover and collector of Australian Rock and Punk Rock / High Energy. "Spaceman In a Satin Suit' was released in 1994 and it is one of the best and most mature works in Celibate Rifles' discography, and now for the first time on vinyl since its initial release. This great LP reflects the simple spirit of the Rifles' rock'n'roll with catchy choruses and signature guitars, with another part that they began to play with after this album, a more experimental and introspective side. The 14 songs of the Celibate Rifles introduce you with an electric storm, oppressively dense, hard and heavy, which then become faster, sharper and stronger, where they overflow Punk, which remains their hallmark, with sharp guitars, wounded and full of fury, until they reach a kind of breaking point towards a more experimental part, together generating an interesting sonic boom (The Ramones team up with Blue Oyster Cult in a particularly gloomy alley). Lovelock's lyrics exude more optimism than on previous LPs and this peaks with 'Big World', a declaration of love to his beloved planet Earth. There is also room for his usual biting social commentary. On the album we also find a tribute to one of its musical influences, 'Let's Do It Again' by Sonic's Rendezvous Band (with the participation of Fred 'Sonic' Smith, ex-MC5).

Since 2015, Berlin’s Cuntroaches have defiled countless venues across Europe and the UK, playing festivals and touring relentlessly. The trio’s influences range widely from metal to punk to hardcore to experimental noise. They aim to create a hybrid sonic experience within a dense wall of sound (often combined with some form of performative mischief - if they’re in the mood). In the spring of 2019 ShitKid - Åsa Söderqvist and Lina Molarin Ericsson - headed over to the US for a couple of shows at the SXSW festival in Austin, TX but ahead of the festival they managed to squeeze in a couple of days in the studio ' first in LA with the legendary the Melvins and then in Austin with Paul Leary of Butthole Surfers. The new album Duo Limbo/'Mellan himmel å helvete' collects the recordings from these two sessions, half of which are ShitKid's first recordings in their native Swedish ' with a set of four songs to start with the band set out to record them in both English and Swedish, clocking in at just over 26 minutes. It's ShitKid's finest work yet with the duo backed by an all star line-up of Buzz Osborne (Melvins) and Dale Crover (Melvins, Redd Kross) on half of the album and Paul Leary and Josh Freese (NIN, Devo, The Replacements etc) on the other half.

After the demise of Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, Lydia Lunch launched her solo career with Queen Of Siam, arguably her greatest LP. Needs no introduction” is a phrase that’s frequently bandied about with little attention paid to its real weight. But with five full lengths, over a dozen 7” EPs, a live record, countless compilation appearances, and a nearly 30 year career under their belt, Lower Class Brats are a band that truly need no introduction. Since their formation in 1995, the Brats has been one of the premier American punk acts, playing a brand of Glam Rock and Oi!-informed streetwise Punk Rock that is unmistakably their own. With 15+ years since their last LP, the droogs are back at long last with a new offering of sonic ultra-violence in the form of Tales Of The Wild, The Ugly & The Damned. While other bands with long histories inevitably crest and dip over time—seeking that elusive “return to form” in their later years—Lower Class Brats have managed to forge a legacy free of missteps. Consequently, Tales Of The Wild, The Ugly & The Damned isn’t a return to form, but the next chapter in their legendary career. In celebration of the ten year anniversary of their seminal album, Seahaven and Run For Cover Records present WFX (Ten Years of Winter Forever). Newly remixed by Vince Ratti and remastered by Ted Jensen.On their debut full-length and follow up to 2010's amazing Ghost, Seahaven exude an effortless and expert musical control, toeing the line between post-punk, emo and post-hardcore styles, moods and atmospheres. The songs carry an ethereal, organic depth and expertise of the space surrounding the music, resulting in a moving dynamism. From airy, minimalist textures to catchy, upbeat pop-rock sections to fully overblown anthems, the band stitch cohesive songs together behind the weaving delivery of vocalist Kyle Soto. Soto moves between storyteller drawl, delicate melody and gruff yell, dripping a tortured sincerity. The delivery reflects the band's delicate musical balance, yet the lyrics paint pictures of a loss of control. Soto uses the musical canvas to try to make sense of love, God, abandonment; events outside of his control and how they affect what he can control. The heartrending stories, musical peaks and valleys, lows and highs, darks and brights push Seahaven in every direction, yet thread a needle that pulls Winter Forever into a cohesive, dynamic and incredibly impressive listen.

Adrian Borland and Graham Bailey might be better known as members of legendary post-punk group The Sound, but the two were childhood friends and had been playing together even earlier in The Outsiders, and continued their deep musical rapport as a duo, creating these intense and engaging songs as Second Layer at the same time as their higher profile band output. Combining their early recordings, including the 1979 Flesh As Property EP and 1980 State Of Emergency EP, Courts Or Wars takes its title from the first song that served as the pair’s introduction to listeners. Right from the beginning you are enveloped in what The Quietus described as, “a monochrome worldview morbidly obsessed with the dehumanizing effect of war, nuclear weapon annihilation, and the fracturing and negation of the self within an increasingly d istorted and technologically mediated society.” Where The Sound fit snugly next to Echo And The Bunnymen, Second Layer had far more in common with the pulsing menace of Suicide. Borland’s familiar vocals and sense of melody hold a connection to his other songwriting, but within these songs he takes far more risks in his guitar work to suit the subject matter. What really drives everything is Bailey’s propulsive bedrock, formed by his homemade pre-drum machine rhythm generators, creating an innovative mechanical approach that somehow inserts a jittery neurotic touch that merges perfectly with his electronic layers driven by the wasp synth, various unique effects boxes or tape loops. Adding in Bailey’s own distinctive bass playing, the results feel personal and experimental, pointed and harsh, while also bracingly accessible and covered in dark manic energy. Over forty years later, these recordings feel shockingly appropriate. In painting a bleak reality and frightening future, there is real desperate beauty here.

After releasing Three singles already this year, THE Clerks are now set to release their album! Only 150 Copies Pressed! From their beginnings in late '76 The Clerks had been gigging the pubs, clubs and halls of Birmingham and London and places in between. By the start of 1980 they'd built a reputation for delivering a lean 45 minute set of their own three-minute songs with a 6o's sensibility and a pop punk energy. They had a loyal following and had supported the likes of Spizz and Tenpole Tudor. The Hope & Anchor in London had become a regular haunt where the small room would overflow with fans, pub rockers, punks and mods plus the odd record company A&R guy. The twelve songs on this LP were recorded by a friend and fan of The Clerks as they played a live set. Consequently, the recording is not of studio quality; it's been transferred, restored and edited but has no overdubs nor any other musical enhancements and is now available for the first time on Detour Records. All of the songs are written by The Clerks apart from 'I'm Down' written by a certain Lennon-McCartney. Lead guitarist Paul Day takes lead vocal on ten of the songs; rhythm guitarist Martin Booth sings lead on 'Cold About Love' and ' It Doesn't Mean That Much To Me'. Martin Poole is on bass and vocals and Paul Cuthbert plays drums. Despite the growing reputation and record company interest, by the end of the year the band had split up and gone their separate ways. So, turn the lights down low, turn the volume up and imagine you're in the steamy basement of a north London pub on a mid-winters evening in 1980. This is the authentic sound of The Clerks as you would have seen and heard them 'Live in London'.

Beyond, though short lived in the Nyhc scene (1988–1989), made an impact with their personal brand of Long Island metaltinged hardcore with intricate riffage. The Dew It! demo was supposed to be recorded for Schism but the label folded before it got off the ground. They sold their demos through Some Records on the Lower East Side until the store closed and the rest were sold through mailorder. Originally recorded on a 1” tape and mixed on cassette, Dew It! has been remixed to give it the sound that was previously intended. Backed with the demo is Beyond’s live set on WYNU’s legendary punk and hardcore radio show, “Crucial Chaos,” which was started in the late ’80s and still continues to this day, nearly 25 years later. Members of Beyond have gone on to bands like Quicksand, Bold, Inside OUT, Burn, Shelter, 108, and more. Revelation Records has combined these two gems on vinyl and paired it with a 20 page 12” x 12” booklet.

Reissue for the 2018 album by Nyhc pioneers Sick Of It All. Wake the Sleeping Dragon is not sensitive, subtle, nuanced singer songwriter fare. Aggressive, angry and in your face old school Lower East Side hardcore punk. Sick Of It All have made another career and genre defining album. Don’t sleep on Wake the Sleeping Dragon.
