Records like Let's Wah Together aren't made via Wetransfer. As the economics of music-making increasingly push young artists to work alone and 'in the box,' Wah Together rejects anti-social techbro musical austerity in favor of spontaneous face-to-face creation. On their debut LP, Let's Wah Together, the NYC-based quartet of bassist Phil Mossman (ex-LCD Soundsystem), drummer Vito Roccoforte (the Rapture), producer/guitarist Steve Schiltz (Longwave), and vocalist Jaiko Suzuki revel in the communal delight that happens when happy accidents are caught on tape. Tracked principally live and in close quarters, Let's Wah Together captures the immediacy and spontaneity of a group of musicians listening to'and playing off' one another with genuine affection, curiosity, and joy. From the skronk n' stomp of 'I'm A Swimmer' to the Japanese Yé Yé beat inflected 'Sayonara,' the dense ear-busting wistfulness of 'Teen Vito' and the storming acidic drive of 'Out! Out! Out!,' Let's Wah Together is a loud and commanding recommitment to the cooperative spirit and familial love that always marks New York's most vital eras. Walrus are here to play for the sake of the song. The Halifax based band's signature sound is a fuzzed-out electric blanket of soul with a few unrepentant strands of authentic heaviosity. Extensive studio experimentation can be heard throughout their sonically unique music, from varispeed warble to Spacemen-3 style saucer drone-attacks. Live, their low-key manner belies a depth and dedication to the craft. This band could be thrown on a bill betwixt Love and Sabbath and not embarrass the present.

Acclaim for Walrus:

'Long, languid stretches of spacey meanderings eventually wind themselves up into tight knots that beg to be undone, to be free again' Walrus bring about a magnificent explosion of noise and heat.' // CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND

''thumping, synthing wonder' mixes the best influences of the genre with the band's own studio experimentation' (4/5) // STEREOGUM

'The band somehow mix gentle, Brian Wilson vocal melodies and orchestrations with out-of-the- blue punk thrash parts that keep listeners guessing. The high, winsome vocals and chiming 12- string Rickenbacker certainly conjured late '60s cloudy folk-pop, but the rest of the band infused the songs with sharp edges. Some of it recalled the Sadies, and the musicians in Walrus are certainly in the same league.' // EXCLAIM!

'Best bet for an acid flashback' // NOW

'Pristine, fuzzed-up jams' // CLRVYNT

Outside Music will support the release with a full marketing and PR campaign. Big Hassle on board for US PR; Starkult for German PR.

More Water! More Damage! The second proper LP by this Texan juggernaut is even more biggerer than the first, a head-drowning pair of new 'reels' (every Water Damage tracks generally take up a reel of tape, hence the 'reel ____' song titles) that makes you feel like you’re swimming in a sun-drenched river of sound. Two drummers, two bassists, and tons of vibrating strings are once again a recipe for massive rocking-drone fires.

Two Songs has two songs, and they’re kind of the yin/yang of Water Damage: one toned very low, growling and roaring, groaning over a beat, while the other hums high, troubling the treble clef and ringing like a bunch of church bells that don’t want to be in church. They’re more alike than different though, divining momentum from repetition, flying forward by staying in place, climbing a mountain that they’re building as they go.

Enough ink has already been spilled about the previous-band pedigrees of the players in this hurtling collective, and by this point, the past seems way less relevant than the present when it comes to Water Damage’s present-pounding sound. These people know what they’re doing, sure. You don’t need a resume in front of you to figure that out. It’s there in every second of this gigantic, eternal music—in all the strings being bowed, the skins being slammed, the rumbles being rumbled.

You might notice that this time around, Water Damage haven’t just given their tracks reel numbers. They're also called 'Fuck This' and 'Fuck That.' I take that as instructional. Whatever you’re doing, whatever you’re fretting about, whatever someone’s trying to use to occupy your attention so you’ll buy something or vote for something or ignore something: Fuck This. Fuck That. Listen to Water Damage."—Marc Masters

Julien Ehrlich and Max Kakacek could hear the staggering differences in the songs they were writing for their third album as Whitney, Spark _ the buoyant drum loops, the effortless falsetto hooks, the coruscant keyboard lines. They suddenly sounded like a band reimagined, their once-ramshackle folk-pop now brimming with unprecedented gusto and sheen. But could they see it, too? So in the ad hoc studio the Chicago duo built in the living room of their rented Portland bungalow, a shared 2020 escape hatch amid breakups and lockdowns, Julien and Max decided to find out. Somewhere between midnight and dawn every night, their brains refracted by the late hour and light psychedelics, they'd play their latest creations while a hardware store disco ball spun overhead and slowed-down music videos from megastars spooled silently on YouTube. Did their own pop songs _ so much more immediate and modern than their hazy origins _ fit such big-budget reels? "We'd come to the conclusion we weren't going to be filming Super 8 videos to this stuff anymore," Julien remembers with a grin. "How about something more hi-fi, cinematic?" When the footage and the tunes linked, Julien and Max knew they had done it, that they'd finally found Whitney's sound. Spark reintroduces Whitney as a contemporary syndicate of classic pop, its dozen imaginative and endearing tracks wrapping fetching melodies around paisley-print Dilla beats and luxuriant electronics. What's more, Whitney reduces three years of extreme emotional highs and lows into 38 brisk but deep minutes, each of these 12 tracks a singable lesson in what it is they (and, really, we) have all survived. The recalcitrant ennui of opener "nothing REMAINS," the devastating loss of "TERMINAL," the sun-streaked renewal of "real Love": However surprising it may sound, Spark is less a radical reinvention for Whitney than an honest accounting of how it feels when you move out of your past and into your present, when you take the next steps of your lives and careers at once and without apology. Spark maintains the warmth and ease of Whitney's early work; these songs glow with the newness of now. Listen closely, and you'll notice frequent references to smoke and fire throughout Spark, itself a double entendre for inspiring something new or burning down the old. Max and Julien were indeed in Portland for the Fall of 2020, when smoke from nearby fires choked the city at record levels. It was terrifying and tragic, but they pressed on. "We found a way to live while the world was burning/Real life was caving in," Julien sings almost merrily during "back THEN," an anthem for finding out what's on the other side of hardship. In these dire days, scientists speak increasingly of serotiny, an evolutionary miracle that causes some trees to release seeds only amid a season of fire. That is how Spark often feels _ Whitney's circumstances were so fraught on so many levels that they hung "the past_out to dry" and began again, finding a fresh version of themselves, their relationship, and their band after the blaze. Max and Julien are back in Chicago now, sharing a cozy walkup with a little studio, where they're already building songs for the next Whitney album. They're both in happy romances, too. Now that they let the past burn, everything is new for Max and Julien. Spark is not only Whitney's best album; it is an inspiring testament to perseverance and renewal, to best friends trusting each another enough to carry one another to the other side of this season of woe.

Julien Ehrlich and Max Kakacek could hear the staggering differences in the songs they were writing for their third album as Whitney, Spark - the buoyant drum loops, the effortless falsetto hooks, the coruscate keyboard lines. "How about something more hi-fi, cinematic?" Introducing Wishy, a brand new band from celebrated Indiana songwriters Kevin Krauter and Nina Pitchkites. Wishy came to life as a musical partnership between the two Indianapolis musicians when Pitchkites moved back home from Philadelphia in 2021. The two bonded over their love for 90s alternative bands like The Sundays and My Bloody Valentine and soon began crafting their own brand of swirling pop-rock with an introspective, grungy flair.By day Krauter works as a music teacher, giving drum and guitar lessons to students, while Pitchkites is a seamstress by trade and often makes embroidered merch for the band. While Krauter spent the better part of the last decade cementing his place as a torchbearer of Midwestern dream pop with 2018's Toss Up and 2020's Full Hand, Pitchkites delved into her own indie electro-pop project Push Pop, writing songs like "Spinning" that would later be reworked for Wishy. To round out the live band, Pitchkites and Krauter enlisted guitarist Dimitri Morris, bassist Mitch Collins, and drummer Conner Host.Across two trips to Los Angeles in late 2022 and early 2023, Krauter and Pitchkites linked up with friend and producer Ben Lumsdaine, who had some spare time between Durand Jones tours to record the pair's newly written songs. The result of their fruitful time in sunny California is the aptly named Paradise, a breezy and melodic EP that puts on full display the songwriter's musical fluency. Tastefully blending shoegaze, dreampop, and alt-rock into a heavenly haze, Wishy delivers a strong 5-song introduction that's dense with melodic earworms and stirring sentiment.Wishy's debut single for new label home Winspear, the driving and distorted "Donut," showcases Pitchkites' hypnotic vocal and Krauter's melancholic wash of guitars. Written after a period when Pitchkites was driving on a spare, "Donut" laments the cynical capitalism of Midwest living and the reliance on a car to get around. Of the song Pitchkites says "When you've got the possibility of the open road plus the li...

The weird world of Wombo is a kaleidoscopic journey of sharp turns and surprising visions, a melting pot of influences with a cheeky cheshire-cat grin that coalesce into a trippy but infinite universe of the band’s own, and a portal into their unique vantage point without limitation. Already committed to living outside the traditionally-heralded country sound of the music scene in their hometown of Louisville, Sydney Chadwick (vocals) and Cameron Lowe (guitar) had previously played in punk pop band the Debauchees, and with the addition of Joel Taylor (drums) in 2016 they found a winning combination of more straightforward indie rock combined with Chadwick’s pitched up, oscillating vocals and unpredictable shifts in melody that see the band moving forward at an impressive pace. Their 2020 Blossomslookdownuponus LP is a snapshot of Wombo’s wide-ranging aspirations that careen across avant pop, post punk and warbly indie interludes with a sky’s-the-limit approach to translating the mundanity of regular life into their own high-frequency language.

Exploiting low wage workers is as American as apple pie, but the trio known as Workers Comp are doing their part to kick against the pricks. Collecting a trio of cassettes, a 45 and an unreleased track, this LP posits what the Dust Bowl migration would have been like if the migrants had access to righteously roughshod rock n’ roll. This is what Americana sounds like after hitchhiking through the Badlands, surrounded on all sides by the ineffectual managerial class, Workers Comp are highly-skilled journeymen—you may recognize drummer Ryan McKeever from his Staffers project, bassist Luke Reddick from art-punk dismantlers Divorce Horse, and singer/guitarist Joshua Gillis from the Detroit-based Deadbeat Beat. With Workers Comp, these three reach back to a time before indie rock became a playground for the idle rich. “High On The Job” sports the kind of weary defiance Johnny Cash made his name with, while “Pick And Choose” sounds like the Replacements got to happy hour before the bartender even started their shift. This self-titled comp contains a baker’s dozen worth of tracks, each one a hunk of soul-nourishing sustenance. Workers Comp might not be able to do anything about the weekly time- theft committed by your place of employment, but they’ll be waiting for you at the end of the day with a cold beer in a frosty mug and a fistful of tears in the form of a song. Edition of 200 copies, includes an insert.

Multidimensional artist and producer yeule announces their new album softscars arriving September 22nd via Ninja Tune. softscars represents a new direction for yeule as they explore softer textures and disembodied arrangements that feature their ethereal vocals front and center. The project closely examines the anatomy of their long held emotional wounds for their most vulnerable work yet. Though its subject matter is heavy and arcane, there is a sense of joyful catharsis that emanates throughout the project. Driving it along is yeule’s shape-shifting vocals, sounding more assured than ever in all of its jagged edges and haunting whispers, relaying the imperfect process of healing.

When Zak Sally left his position as bassist for the minimalist rock band LOW after 12 years, he was pretty certain he was done with music, choosing instead to concentrate on his cartooning (Recidivist, Sammy The Mouse), and his small-press venture, La Mano 21. However, he remained absolutely terrified by music, and so found himself drawn back into the basement with the self-imposed rule to write/play/sing/make every sound in every song-no matter what. Eventually he brought the whole mess over to his friend Ben Durrant's (Andrew Bird, Dosh, Shearwater) Crazy Beast studio and they made a record out of it. That record is called Fear of Song, and it's not elegant, literary, graceful, virtuosic, pastoral, clever, or compositionally astounding; it's the sound of one man clanging. This single is one song from that record (to be released this summer by the aforementioned La Mano 21 as a handmade and signed, l...

For their first album in 5 years, Zelienople turns on the current time with a record of low key decaying songs wrapped in hypnotic, driving rhythms.

The Chicago based trio is back with a stunner of an underground pop album. Their most reverb heavy bombast is gone in favour of pure earth bound intimate tunes that feel like they summon the spirit of the late Mark Hollis. Shrouded tribal percussion and rippling vocals are at the forefront, while looped atmospheres echo in the distance.

Since the release of their last album, vocalist Matt Christensen has been known for pouring his soul out in countless bandcamp releases of singer/songwriter, experimental and ambient offerings. It's hard to keep up with him, but one can't but to admire the dedication and extremely high quality of it all. Mike Weis on the other hand is less prolific, but has become a focused student of Korean Shaman and Buddhist music, often performing in zen based percussive rituals when he's not involved in side projects of improvisational music. Brian Harding is perhaps the most anonymous of the three, yet he is the steady, grounding element on bass that keeps them as one. Together, they create a beautifully realised own voice that feels especially close on their new album. Hold You Up is like a slow walk through a withering world, though one with a sense of refuge. This is music with heart - navigating darkness through light.

LP+7" (Clear Vinyl). When the Ramones lost it, the Zero Boys found it; Adding a slambrigade fist to the Blitzkrieg Beat. The Zero Boys managed tocome with one of the best early 80's punk records, or one of thebest records ever, period. From 1979 to 1983, the Indianapolis-based Zero Boys were thefinest hardcore blitz in the Midwest if not all the lower 48 states.Compiled and released as a post-mortem following the band'sbreakup, History Of_ is the proof, if more was needed, that theirtake of American hardcore wasn't all white bread numbers.Yeah, they played shows with Minor Threat, Dead Kennedys,Subhumans, and others but in Terry "Hollywood" Howe's guitarthere was harmonious terror and unstoppable cadence. Terry'slicks and chops _ a leap beyond two or three chord punk _offered a zone and measured count for drummer MarkCutsinger and bassist David "Tufty" Clough, a rhythm unit in parwith the Minutemen if not The Meters, to run lines likequicksilver. Meanwhile, frontman, Paul "Z" Mahern provides aconstant wash from beginning to end.Originally released in 1984 with a limited-edition reissue in 2009,this 40th anniversary edition includes the original LP of `HistoryOf_' and a 7" featuring four live recordings never previouslypressed to vinyl and recorded at iconic hardcore/punk venueCrazy Al's in 1980: "Livin' In The 80's", "Stick To Your Guns","Commies", and "I'm Absent".
