While the previous Amen Dunes records have all been largely improvisational first-take affairs, recorded in a matter of weeks at most, the forthcoming full-length Love is the product of close to a year and a half of continuous work by Damon McMahon. Unlike McMahon's earlier Amen Dunes recordings, which were almost always a solo affair, the music on Love was performed by a variety of musicians, including his longtime collaborators Jordi Wheeler on guitar and piano, and Parker Kindred on drums. McMahon chose to hold the main recording sessions for Love in Montreal with Dave Bryant and Efrim Menuck of Godspeed You! Black Emperor. In addition to recording the sessions that McMahon produced, members of Godspeed also played on several of the songs. So did saxophonist Colin Stetson and Elias Bender-Ronnenfelt of Iceage, who duets with McMahon on two tracks. This project has always seen McMahon guided by traditional song and sound, but Love is the first work in which this clearly shines through. The result is definitively the most substantial Amen Dunes record to date. These are elemental songs about time, love and memory, as much about the listener as they are about the writer: pure, open, and beautiful.

Punk Slime Recordings are proud to present Holiday Ghosts and their self-titled debut album, which is due for release on September 22 on vinyl and digitally. Holiday Ghosts is based in Falmouth on the south coast of England and originally started out as the solo project of Sam Stacpoole of The Black Tambourines, with the rest of the line-up evolving since 2012. Holiday Ghosts is now a full collaboration between Sam and girlfriend Katja Rackin, also featuring various members of The Red Cords, The Golden Dregs, and William Weak, playing a stripped back and primitive style of rock 'n' roll, with influences from acts such as Modern Lovers, The Clean, Violent Femmes, and The Velvet Underground. The debut LP Holiday Ghosts showcases a mix of tracks written by Sam Stacpoole, Katja Racking, and Charlie Murphy (also of The Red Cords, Freak Genes, Murph & The Gazorpos). It was recorded over two years at Troubador Studio in Falmouth on eight-track quarter-inch tape and also features Ben Woods on bass. The album steps away from today's heavy, fuzzed out guitar riffs and drones, and instead shows a leaner, snappier, and more playful sound.

Nobody cared about their old heads, because the new ones work just fine now, don't they?.... they have the same size mouth and eyes. The song "Old Heads" is a sci-fi space anthem to technology that constantly replaces itself, proving both necessary and unnecessary at the same time. This remarkable coexistence is one of many achievements of Chad VanGaalen's Light Information, his sixth record on Sub Pop, due September 8th. For an album that's about "not feeling comfortable with really anything," as VanGaalen says, Light Information is nonetheless a vivid, welcoming journey through future worlds and relentless memories. The rich soundscapes and sometimes jarring imagery could only come from the mind of a creative polymath--an accomplished visual artist, animator, director, and producer, VanGaalen has scored television shows, designed puppet characters for Adult Swim, directed videos for Shabazz Palaces, Strand of Oaks, Metz, Dan Deacon, and The Head and the Heart, and produced records for Women, Alvvays, and others. While alienation has always been a theme of VanGaalen's music, Light Information draws on a new kind of wisdom--and anxiety--gained as he watches his kids growing up. "Being a parent has given me a sort of alternate perspective, worrying about exposure to a new type of consciousness that's happening through the internet," he says. Throughout the dark-wave reverb of Light Information are stories of paranoia, disembodiment, and isolation--but there's also playfulness, empathy, and intimacy. The product of six years' work, going back even before 2014's Shrink Dust, Light Information emerged from the experimental instruments that fill VanGaalen's Calgary garage studio. As always, VanGaalen wrote, played, and produced all of the music on Light Information (save Ryan Bourne's bass part on "Mystery Elementals" and vocals on "Static Shape" from his young daughters Ezzy and Pip), and designed the cover art.

Seit ihrem letzten Album ist viel passiert. Nachdem die QOTSA über 100 Shows zu ".Like Clockwork" gespielt hatten, ging Josh Homme mit Iggy Pop ins Studio um dessen Album einzuspielen. Neben den Songs für das Iggy Pop-Album skizzierte er auch immer wieder neue Queens Of The Stone Age Songs. Ende 2016 ging Josh endlich wieder mit seiner eigenen Band ins Studio, um das siebte Album der Band aufzunehmen. Produziert wurde "Villains" von Mark Ronson (der Mark Ronson? Ja, der Mark Ronson), co-produziert von Mark Ranking und gemixt vom Soundmagier Alan Moulder.

Josh schwebte bei den Aufnahmen nichts weniger vor als eine neue Definition ihres Sounds. "The most important aspect of making this record was redefining our sound, asking and answering the question 'what do we sound like now?' If you can't make a great first record, you should just stop-but if you can make a great record but you keep making records and your sound doesn't evolve, you become a parody of that original sound."

Dabei wurde Mark Ronson zu dem fehlenden Puzzleteilchen, das das in sich geschlossene Ökosystem der Queens Of The Stone Age kreativ aufmischen sollte. Er selber beschreibt die Arbeit an "Villains" so:
"Queens are and have always been my favorite rock n roll band ever since I walked into Tower on Sunset and bought Rated R in the summer of 2000, so it was incredibly surreal to be welcomed into their secret, pirate clan-or the 'jacuzzi' as Josh likes to call it. I also knew that my super fandom alone would not keep me in the jacuzzi. There were moments during the making of the album in which i was aware i was watching my musical heroes craft something that was sure to become one of my favorite moments on any Queens album. And to have some part in that felt like being in a dream--a very heavy, dark, wonderful dream."

Some time in 1986 (exact memories are a bit hazy, it seems), The Wild Poppies formed in Wellington, New Zealand and recorded one full-length album (their debut Heroine) and a single, called "Where Is Wellington?". As if in response to that question about their city of origin, they promptly relocated to the U.K. There, in the city of Oxford, amidst learning to play their songs, touring for a few years with well-known local contemporaries such as Ride and Swervedriver (their housemates at the time), they forged a name for themselves in their chosen home.

Arriving at the back end of the '80s, their signature "Warm Wall of Sound" resided somewhere between the jangle pop of other indie scene favorites such as The Rain Paradeand The Church and the proto-shoegaze of Loop, Spacemen 3 and My Bloody Valentine. They enjoyed a "1001 night" season as a touring favorite in the U.K., before releasing the ironically named “Out of Time EP” and dissolving in the face of the impending rave culture that had by then emerged. After that, as original guitarist Nick Taylor states, "Nobody ever saw The Wild Poppies. Very few at least, and I suspect that those few that did can actually remember it now. I certainly can't, and I was IN the Wild Poppies."

Compiling, for the first time ever, their long out-of-print “Heroine” LP on Poppie Records, the “Stare at the Sun” 7" the “Out of Time EP” as well as demos for many latter-day tracks (both released and unreleased), Manufactured Recordings, in association with Spain's Pretty Olivia Records presents “Heroine: The Wild Poppies Complete Collection, (1986-1989)”.

This comprehensive release also features photos from the period and liner notes detailing from Nick Taylor detailing The Wild Poppies brief and vibrant time together. Original copies of this LP often sell for more than $100, but are offered in this expanded volume for a fraction of its typical price.

As a photographer, visual artist and member of the cosmic brain-bending trio Devin Gary & Ross, Ross Goldstein has built a layered catalog of softly psychedelic artistic output, but none has been as personal as the sonic spiderweb of his second solo album Inverted Jenny. The last time Ross showed up solo was in 2007 on the quietly-released Trail Songs, a collection of more Americana-leaning songcraft. A decade later, he picks up on threads started on his debut, but continues in a far more inward direction, blurring deftly arranged instrumental backdrops with patient, bucolic songwriting for a discreetly epic modern classic in headphone music. Ross travels through a glowing internal world with these songs, observing moments of both stillness and the sublime from a distance. There's a sheen of loneliness that runs throughout, but never a bitterness. The record opens with a trifecta of Van Dyke Parks-tinged open road songs, but even in the joyful discovery of these songs there's the sense that they're viewed from a loner's perspective. This feeling only grows as things shift from roadside distractions to the plush instrumentals and gentle vibes that make up the record's second half. Gorgeous arrangements set up a playful conversation between warm synths, stoned guitar leads, meticulously placed touches of chamber pop orchestration, and even sounds of the natural world from Ross' own field recordings, always buzzing with life. By the end of the album we've walked alongside for a while, watching the songs navigate their lonesome internal landscape like a late night wearing blissfully into morning. At the end of this night (and every other night, really) there's no answer to be found, no great revelation besides wandering along into another beautiful morning.

His music is informed by the diverse influences of his early life in Phoenix, Arizona and San Clemente, California followed by his family’s return to The Philippines aged 15. Taking to sampling and beat making as much as traditional musicianship, his thirst for expression has seen him turn his unique voice to rap, punk, synth pop and lo-fi indie styles. On Manila Ice he strips his experimentation back to a more traditional songwriting, and brings a striking honesty to the narratives which weave through the record.

Powerflo is a rap metal band formed in 2017, consisting of Cypress Hill rapper Sen Dog, guitarists Billy Graziadei (Biohazard) and Roy Lozano (ex-downset.), bassist Christian Olde Wolbers (ex-Fear Factory) and Worst drummer Fernando Schaefer.

The band's history can be traced back to the 1990's, where the band members would often collaborate - such as Cypress Hill and Biohazard performing on the famous Judgment Night soundtrack, or Wolbers and Lozano appearing in Cypress Hill albums Skull & Bones and Stoned Raiders. In 2015, Lozano played some demos to Sen Dog on a ride to the airport, setting the foundations for Powerflo.

The name of the band comes from a comment Roy Lozano made about Sen Dog's vocal tracking for the upcoming album. Describing their sound as a "cross between Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and Cypress Hill", they first unveiled the group on March 1, 2017 while recording their self-titled debut album. On May 2 2017, they released the first single "Resistance" via Metal Injection. In launching the first single, Sen Dog indicated that this is a long term project and that future Powerflo albums will be released after their self-titled is released.

OK COMPUTER was originally released on various dates ranging from May to July 1997. Produced by the band and Nigel Godrich, the album features the singles “Paranoid Android,” “Karma Police,” “Lucky” and “No Surprises,” and is widely cited as one of the greatest works of Radiohead’s--or any artist’s—catalogue. OK COMPUTER was the first Radiohead record to reach #1 in the UK and to be nominated for the Album of the Year GRAMMY. On their latest EP, Shadow Expert, the syntax of popular music is regarded suspiciously and often subjected to revisions or reversals. Without formal training in their instruments, the players are left to determine their own musical language. Eve Alpert and Kasra Kurt’s guitars occupy themselves most often with the pace-keeping work typical of a rhythm section. Meanwhile, Gerasimos Livitsanos’ bass and Hugo Stanley’s drums seem to perform commentary and reportage from deeply embedded positions at the front. Their contributions remain necessary to the composition, generating the kind of friction that other motion can be charted against: the grinding of teeth, the turning of an engine. The record begins with the skittering appeals of one guitar to another, hard-panned left and right. They produce a groove, stop on a dime, and begin a series of nimble paces that might suggest the artful recovery from a skipped step. Here and elsewhere, the guitars confer and conspire with each other, finishing phrases and figuring it out. There is a faint delay to be heard in their communication, perhaps equivalent to that which exists between an object and its shadow, broken across several surfaces. On the vocal track, Alpert and Kurt trade the barbs and bristles of a familiar argument and share the blissful cries of discovery. The “How could I forgive that? / How could I forget that?” refrain of “Two Toes” recalls the capricious turns of the gut in moments of grievance and doubt. These sonic and thematic dissonances are sustained, rather than resolved. This music draws the thought as it bounces around the head, draws the conversation as it circulates the room. Its most important questions are never answered but always rephrased. On 2015’s Trading Basics, Palm’s experiments were more alchemical, more preoccupied with the impossible. Much of that music was submerged in some viscous and delicious substance, which often seemed to burn and bubble over. Two years and several tours of the United States later, the group sounds more limber, more acclimated to the press of events. At seventeen minutes in duration, these six songs are efficiencies of form, cutting quickly and decisively among scenes of bodies, systems, and intrigue.

In 2003, aged 34, he died in Los Angeles, California, from two stab wounds to the chest. The autopsy evidence was inconclusive as to whether the wounds were self-inflicted. The music of drummer John Colpitts as Man Forever is explorative, innovative and fearless. A musician and composer equally versed in the disparate musical languages of DIY rock, improvisation, and contemporary classical, Colpitts (aka Kid Millions) has made an album that defes genre classifcation. Propulsive, elaborate drum arrangements (created with TIGUE Percussion) remain essential to Man Forever - on the songs of Play What They Want, they are augmented by voice and melody with contributions from Laurie Anderson, Yo La Tengo, and Mary Lattimore to name a few. Play What They Want represents the culmination of 25 years of musical engagement by one of New York’s most acclaimed percussionists. The collaborative process, essential to Man Forever, requires the relinquishing of one’s ego for a greater purpose. In Play What They Want Colpitts leverages a vast and talented stable of diverse collaborators to create a work that transcends the sum of its parts.
“You Were Never Here” kicks off the album with a gorgeous vocal performance by all members of Yo La Tengo and, like the transition from the black and white to technicolor, the piece becomes a driving, wild marriage of Max Roach’s “Garvey’s Ghost,” McCoy Tyner, Alice Coltrane and Steve Reich. World-class harpists Brandee Younger and Mary Lattimore join bassist Brandon Lopez, pianist Sam Yulsman and the Quince Contemporary Vocal Ensemble to create an experimental jazz and classical “dream team.” “Ten Thousand Things” resonates with TIGUE’s tense, virtuosic compound meters, a Moondog-esque vocal by Colpitts and singer Nick Hallett, and another intuitive performance by harpist Mary Lattimore. Finishing the side, “Debt and Greed” is a surprisingly wry pop tune that combines Colpitts’ Jaki Liebezeit-esque drum groove with CSN-style harmonies, guitar by Trans Am’s Phil Manley, and horn playing by Ben Lanz (Beiruit, The National, Sufjan Stevens).
The second side leads with the evocative album centerpiece “Twin Torches.” Here Colpitts worked with the legendary multi-media artist and musician Laurie Anderson, who provided spoken vocals and violin on the nearly 10-minute tour de force. This composition also features arresting vocal atmospherics by Quince, which precede some of the most complex drumming Colpitts has ever recorded. The album closes with “Catenary Smile,” a prickly ballad featuring Nick Hallett’s cascading background vocals which buoy the lyrics: a contemplation of humanity’s problematic tendency to anthropomorphize inanimate things.
While Colpitts’ previous albums have expanded on the possibilities and limitations of drums and percussion, this new album redefnes the project in myriad ways. Building on a complex rhythmic foundation, Man Forever created an album that is innovative, imaginative and joyous. Play What They Want is a rare record of untamed ambition that hits all its marks.

This one's been a long time coming but the 25th Anniversary Edition of the 'Singles: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack', the 1992 film and album that introduced a new Seattle rock sound to the world is set for release on May 19 in a 2LP configuration, including a bonus disc of rarities and previously unreleased tracks.

The 2LP edition features the album's original 13 tracks newly mastered, across four sides of vinyl. The bonus CD of rarities and unreleased tracks is included as a special insert in the 2LP vinyl package.

The newly released bonus CD features previously unreleased recordings by Mudhoney, Paul Westerberg, Mike McCready and Chris Cornell in addition to rarities such as Cornell's 1992 EP Poncier (debuting an early rendition of ''Spoonman'') and tracks from the film not included on the soundtrack album.

Also included are new liner notes - and a track-by-track description - written especially for this collection by Cameron Crowe, the screenwriter and director of ''Singles.''

Set in Seattle at the beginning of the 1990s, Crowe's film featured music by relatively obscure (at that time) bands like Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains and Soundgarden, providing an introduction to an emerging grunge rock music scene for a welcoming mainstream audience. The film became a cult classic while the soundtrack achieved RIAA double platinum status in the US.

Since 2012, Father John Misty, aka Josh Tillman, has unexpectedly emerged as a singular (if not undeniably, um, idiosyncratic) voice. Whether by virtue of his lyrics, which routinely defy the presumed polarities of wit and empathy; his live performances which may perhaps be described best as “intimately berzerk”, or the infuriating line he seems to occupy between canny and total fraud online or in interviews, Father John Misty has cultivated a rare space for himself in the musical landscape – that of a real enigma. Pure Comedy sees Tillman at the height of these powers: as a lyricist, and equally so a cultural observer – at times bordering on freakishly prescient. Tillman’s bent critiques, bared humanity and gently warped classic songwriting are all here in equal measure and – at 75 minutes – there’s a veritable fuck ton of it. The album navigates themes of progress, technology, fame, the environment, politics, aging, social media, human nature, human connection and his own role in it all with his usual candour, and in terms as timely as they are timeless.

Tillman wrote the majority of Pure Comedy throughout 2015 and recorded all the basic tracking and vocals live to tape (in no more than two takes each) at United Studios (fka the legendary Ocean Way Studios, favored by Frank Sinatra and The Beach Boys) in Los Angeles March 2016.

Pure Comedy was co-produced once again by Josh Tillman and long-time producer Jonathan Wilson; mixed by Tillman, Wilson and Trevor Spencer, and mastered by Bob Ludwig at Gateway Mastering Studios. The album features string, horn and choral arrangements from classical iconoclast Gavin Bryars (Jesus Blood Never Failed Me Yet, Sinking Of The Titanic), with additional contributions from Nico Muhly and Thomas Bartlett.

Cold Beat, aka Hannah Lew, returns with the announcement of her third album, Chaos By Invitation, out April 7th via her own Crime on the Moon label. As compared with previous releases, Chaos By Invitation began in Lew's home, alone, with additional tracking done later by Phil Manley (Trans Am) at El Studio and Mikey Young (Total Control) - only to return to Lew's home for completion over the course of many months. As a result, the offering is much more personal and direct than Into The Air, which was more of a band effort. Collages from Lew's home environment make up many of the textures of Chaos By, woven in to create an intimate atmosphere, a sort of chaos by necessity and design. The album also features performances by her friends Kyle King, Alex Shen, Jackson Blumgart, and Mikey Young.

The album moves through themes of sensuality/intangibility. Lew attempts to reconcile the distance between these two modalities throughout the album. One can hear the surrender in Lew's voice as she grasps to hold onto the end of a rope during "In Motion" - as if succumbing to a strong current of emotion. Chaos By Invitation examines what can be machine-readable and what is only felt in the body.

Inspired musically by bands such as NEU! and Tubeway Army, Lew was also influenced by her own burgeoning interest in astronomy. The first single, "62 Moons," is a song about love taken for granted, analogous to the 62 moons of Saturn, which are in constant loving orbit around a beautiful siren planet with many satellites. The artwork (above), done by Kevin McCarthy - of legendary Bay Area post-punk band Rank Xerox - was made to be machine readable, with some far distant expectation some synthetic intelligence would be able to understand this extremely personal and human album.

“Incesticide” is a compilation album by the American grunge band Nirvana. It consists of their 1990 non-album single "Sliver", B-sides, demos, outtakes, covers, and radio broadcast recordings. At the time, the majority of the material on “Incesticide” was circulating within fan communities (albeit in lower quality). It was widely reported in the music press that the band wanted to offer fans a higher-quality alternative, but in the book “Cobain Unseen”, Charles R. Cross writes that Kurt Cobain agreed to the release of this compilation because he was allowed complete control over the album's artwork. The album was released on December 1992 in Europe and in the United States and eventually reached number thirty-nine on the Billboard 200. Since the songs were recorded in different sessions and some were recorded when Nirvana did not have a stable formation, the album includes recordings by four different drummers: Chad Channing, Dan Peters, Dale Crover, and Dave Grohl.

In 1969 Chet Demilo was appearing at Donkin's Inn, Marina Del Rey, where he met Arnie Marcus and Ray Hames, who together were to become part of an incredible slice of history. Donkin's became the hottest and most famous destination in Southern California for the next seven years, and Chet was the magnet that started the new singles scene in Los Angeles with Marina Del Rey as ground zero.

Arnie sat in on bongos with Chet from time to time, and Ray, who was managing an apartment complex that housed 200 flight attendants, just happened to have a unit available!! Chet moved in, and he and Ray started working on songs together. Chet suggested forming a vocal group with Arnie and SST was born. For three months they practiced the intricate vocal harmonies and in early 1970 cut the album, "Soft Soul Transition". A thousand records were pressed, and an album release party was held at Donkins where SST gave their one and only performance that night!

There was interest in the project at Burt Bacharach's Blue Seas Music, but it was not to be and SST faded away...until more than 20 years later when the SST album was discovered by a new generation of DJs and collectors looking for cool and groovy sounds from the 60s-70s.

Beck has always been known for his ever-changing moods -- particularly since they often arrived one after another on one album, sometimes within one song -- yet the shift between the neon glitz of Midnite Vultures and the lush, somber Sea Change is startling, and not just because it finds him in full-on singer/songwriter mode, abandoning all of the postmodern pranksterism of its predecessor. What's startling about Sea Change is how it brings everything that's run beneath the surface of Beck's music to the forefront, as if he's unafraid to not just reveal emotions, but to elliptically examine them in this wonderfully melancholy song cycle. If, on most albums prior to this, Beck's music was a sonic kaleidoscope -- each song shifting familiar and forgotten sounds into colorful, unpredictable combinations -- this discards genre-hopping in favor of focus, and the concentration pays off gloriously, resulting in not just his best album, but one of the greatest late-night, brokenhearted albums in pop. This, as many reviews and promotional interviews have noted, is indeed a breakup album, but it's not a bitter listen; it has a wearily beautiful sound, a comforting, consoling sadness. His words are often evocative, but not nearly as evocative as the music itself, which is rooted equally in country-rock (not alt-country), early-'70s singer/songwriterism, and baroque British psychedelia. With producer Nigel Godrich, Beck has created a warm, enveloping sound, with his acoustic guitar supported by grand string arrangements straight out of Paul Buckmaster, eerie harmonies, and gentle keyboards among other subtler touches that give this record a richness that unveils more with each listen. Surely, some may bemoan the absence of the careening, free-form experimentalism of Odelay, but Beck's gifts as a songwriter, singer, and musician have never been as brilliant as they are here. From the same misty mountain top tape spool as August’s A Weird Exits, Thee Oh Sees bring us a companion LP titled An Odd Entrances. Delving more towards the contemplative side than the face-skinning aspects of A Weird Exits, An Odd Entrances is a cosmic exercise en plein aire with Dwyer and co double drum shuffling, lounging with cellos, following a flute around the groove, and spooling a few Grimm-dark lullabies along the way. Lurking in the grass are a snake or two, like the celestial facing instrumental buzz of Unwrap The Fiend Pt. 1…but for the most part this is a relatively hushed affair, a morning rather than evening listen perhaps. You could say it's the sound of Dwyer and co. going even more out there with some amazing smoked out grooves and enjoying the power of repetition. Probably the nearest yet to his solo Damaged Bug output. The band plans on donating half of their profits from the first pressing to Elizabeth House, a local charity here in Pasadena that specifically helps homeless women with children from the San Gabriel Valley get back on their feet.
