True Sounds of Liberty date back to 1978 and the birth of punk rock/hardcore in Los Angeles. Following the magical debut "The Mammoth Sessions", the new album dfrom GEORGIA'S HORSE is a study in heartbreak and loneliness set amidst the backdrop of the vast landscapes of American Southwest. Drawing influences from her perennial favourites BAUHAUS, as well as NATACHA ATLAS' exotic "Mish Maoul" and the psych folk of early WILL OLDHAM. Most of the songs were initially composed on her much loved piano which was in need of some tuning. Having not been tuned since around 1992, the piano had been moved from place to place too many times to count but lent a fractured beauty to her creations. From the early versions on the piano, she started to venture into the more electronic side of music mixing styles and sounds to create a marvellously eclectic collection of songs. The Hopeful was made at Soma Studios in Chicago, on a two-day tour break in January of 2006. In Ngélar—the sextet’s sophomore LP—deeper social narratives and more intimate subject matters are more apparent. In which they speak a lot about ‘tanah’ or ‘land/soil,’ owing a lot to the fact that their hometown, Jatiwangi’s history of being the country’s largest producer of clay/terracotta-based products. The people in Jatiwangi’s intertwining relationship with ‘tanah’ is simply unparalleled—even their instruments are mostly made of terracotta.

From the reimagining of their hometown’s past glories, Lair, along with singer/songwriter Monica Hapsari (who co-wrote and co-composed three songs in the album) and Go Kurosawa (Kikagaku Moyo) helming the project as the producer, sings about the rituals and traditions of harvest, to sending off prayers towards their once-prospering land and the ruins of what was once a dense forest in Jatiwangi, which they are currently trying to reclaim while racing with the massive wave of industrialisation. It is a contextually-sorrowful album as much as it is a candid, cheery commemoration of the band members’ everyday life in today’s northern shores of Java, Indonesia.

Ngélar is one of the words that might be able to describe the essence of Lair as a group. The word itself can be traced back to the locals’ culture of ‘going around in celebration of something.’ In their village, ngélar simply means a traveling performance, in which the performers would play music and go around the village, greeting the people around them as they move from place to place, or simply within their immediate surroundings, indicating that there is something nearby that is being celebrated.

Lair is simply in love with ‘journey,’ ‘time,’ and all of their interactions. Ngélar, for them, is a representation of their journey. How they go around, interacting and communicating, to celebrating and making sense of everything that is going on within and around them. For Lair, Ngélar is a method, a creative process, and—as an album—a culmination of each of their journeys since the group’s founding.

Lead cuts, "Distant Dawn" and "Vital Fall" showcase the range and dexterity that Ohio seems to inherently cultivate, but tracks like "Forever Silent" (featuring Angie Willcutt from Artificial Go and Rod) and the finale, "No Necessities", are like a death trip from the cosmos down to the factory floor. The History of Unheard Music hail from lower Manhattan and were founded at the absolute dawn of the 1980s. The founders, Books Williams, Charlie Mendoza and Beo Morales combined their individual and common interests in music from all periods of all cultures, active analytic listening, state-of-the-art music technology and low tech devices. These interests were applied to highly developed composition and raw free-form improvisation. Access to the then-nascent computer aided compositional tools of sampling and synthesis, pre-and-post Midi sequencing and a fearless appetite for sound-as-event, synthesizing historical styles, formats, sonic triggers, and traditions allowed them to strike a nerve in the listener resulting in responses ranging from confusion and bewilderment to appreciation and inspiration and beyond. A neutral response to the music or the live performances was not an option.

Teaming up again with his Cowboy Outfit, Nick Lowes The Rose of England remains a highly engaging and often overlooked album. The title track tells a World War I-era tale that was sturdy enough to be covered by Brit-folkies The Oyster Band, and features a trademark Lowe hook. Nick took a huge swing at the charts, recording his version (previously recorded by Dave Edmunds, and played live by Rockpile) of his classic I Knew the Bride with pal Huey Lewis producing and his band the News providing the track. Fame and fortune may not have followed, but a solid batch of songs including covers of pals John Hiatt (She Dont Love Nobody) and Elvis Costello (Indoor Fireworks) rubbed shoulders with Nicks originals as well as Nicks most-covered cover (Moon Mullicans 7 Nights to Rock).
