The day has finally come! We have waited with eageranticipation to release Matthew Cooper's spellbindingsoundtrack to Some Days Are Better Than Others sincebefore his creative breakthrough album, Similes(released under his more widely known Eluviummoniker) was even made. The film stars James Mercer(Broken Bells, The Shins) and Carrie Brownstein(Portlandia, Sleater-Kinney) as strangers whose livesoccasionally intersect as they navigate their way throughthe struggles of personal attachment and disconnection.

Although this wasn’t directed by but Sergio Leone, but by the less known Giulio Petroni, “Tepepa” is one of the best films in the spaghetti western genre, thanks to a perfect synopsis – even if as set in the ‘abused’ Mexican Revolution of the early ‘900 – to a trio of exceptional actors and, finally, to Ennio Morricone’s soundtrack. The protagonists are in fact the immovable doctor John Steiner, the histrionic revolutionary Tomas Milian and the massive Colonel Orson Welles, a unique and practically unrepeatable combination, however directed in a ‘leone-ish’ way by Petroni, who often focuses on large panoramas and close-ups on the character’s faces. As always, Morricone means quality: for “Tepepa” the Maestro creates a memorable soundtrack, dominated by strings and, curiously, by the acoustic guitar! Reissued several times on CD, this album has been reissued on vinyl almost 40 years later! When the film was premiered in the theatres (1969) just a the single 45rpm “Viva la Revolucion / In Mexico I would like” had been released; both songs are of course included here, the second of which is sung by Christy (stage name of Mary Cristina Brancucci) in a very felt and compelling way.

A high-speed car chase between a Dodge Charger and a Ford Mustang, with super-cop Bullitt at the wheel, who forces the hitman off the road and into a petrol station, which explodes and incinerates him. Prior to that, harsh clashes of metal, hubcaps flying all over the place, and the chief character Steve McQueen, who grimly changes gears and hurtles through the streets of San Francisco, wheels screaming and rubber burning. That was how Hollywood staged one of the longest and most dramatic car chases, long before the days of the Anti-Blocking-System and Anti-Slide-Control.
Very up-to-date and just as exciting as the screenplay is the music Lalo Schifrin wrote for the film, which embeds the characters, places and events in a musical context. For example, "Bullitt": the metrically angular main theme portrays a mysterious, cool character who sums up a situation with keen alertness and then makes his attack with the speed of lightning.
Initially the music travels through easy-going Latin terrain. But gradually the rhythmic texture changes and takes a rougher path, with clicks, knocks and hammering. Legendary flute lines create a compensatory placidness with airy clouds floating above the sharp mix. A really special track is "Shifting Gears": here you can listen to Schifrin tuning the car, how he manipulates a jammed springy bossa to take on the sound of clean, smooth-running rock.

This Speakers Corner LP was remastered using pure analogue components only, from the master tapes through to the cutting head. All royalties and mechanical rights have been paid.

Lalo Schifrin achieved the feat of becoming both one of the most successful Hollywood composers and an influential and cult-revered jazz musician. His exciting film themes from “Mission: Impossible” to “Bullit” and the “Dirty Harry” films are legendary, and the albums recorded under his own name oscillate between big band jazz, groove experiments and world music. The 16-cd box “The Sound Of Lalo Schifrin” now aims, for the first time, to combine all facets of the musician in one box. It contains several of his full-length albums plus a huge amount of film and TV themes with an astonishing stylistic range. The recordings range from 1955 to 2017, and include famous jazz instrumentalists such as Jimmy Smith and Stan Getz, as well as singers such as Barbra Streisand, Ray Charles, Scott Walker and many others. listen. 325 tracks and over 18 hours of playing time bring you closer to the musical genius Lalo Schifrin. Wewantsounds is delighted to release for the first time on vinyl the Lalo Schifrin"s soundtrack for Frank Perry"s thriller "Man On A Swing" from 1974. Featuring Schifrin"s superb mix of Jazz, Bossa, Groove and atmospheric soundscape, the soundtrack, recorded in LA with the Wrecking Crew"s Emil Richards, Bud Shank and Howard Roberts among others, finds the composer at his most inspired. Delving in the Paramount tapes, the label has re-sequenced the soundtrack from scratch and found several unissued cues as bonus tracks. Among which the mindblowing rhythm track for the title "Radio Source", featuring a super Funk breakbeat. The Soundtrack has been remastered for vinyl by Colorsound studio and features liner notes by Jeremy Allen with artwork by Eric Adrian Lee. By the time Lalo Schifrin composed the soundtrack for Frank Perry"s psychological thriller in 1974, starring Cliff Robertson and Joel Gray (who"d just won an Oscar for his role in Bob Fosse"s Cabaret) he was Hollywood royalty having worked on such iconic films as Bullitt and Dirty Harry. Perry on his side, had caused a stir with The Swimmer in 1968 starring Burt Lancaster (although he would dismiss the film after being fired from the production) and followed up with a string of great cult movies including "Last Summer" (1969), Diary of a Mad Housewife (1970) starring Carrie Snodgress - whom Neil Young famously fell in love with upon seeing the film and "Play It as It lays" in 1972, adapted from Joan Didion"s eponymous novel. Breaking from the social dramas from of his previous films, Perry decided to shoot a thriller based on journalist William Arthur Clark"s book "The Girl on The Volkswagen Floor." The film follows a police officer investigating a murder with the help of a strange ambiguous clairvoyant played by Gray. For the score Perry went to Lalo Schifrin who"d just come out of a bad experience on The Exorcist working with William Friedkin who"d rejected his music in favour of Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield! The score was recorded in LA with the Wrecking Crew and, although the full line up is not known, it included Emil Richards, Howard Roberts, Bud Shank and of course Schifrin on piano. "Man on a Swing" is pure undiluted Schifrin from the early 70s. The score plays like a long suite alternating Bossa Nova ("Juke Box Source"), Lounge Jazz ("Trip to La") and groove ("fm Groove") with superb "suspense" soundscapes like "Rosehaven Hotel". The label has gone back to the Paramount 3-track tape transfers and come up with an updated tracklist (a CD version briefly appeared in the 2010s) - re-sequenced and augmented with a handful of bonus tracks and alternate takes. A highlight is certainly "Radio Source Rhythm" which, losing the guitar and organ, reveal a jaw dropping funk breakbeat that is in the league of Dirty Harry and Enter the Dragon. This and the whole soundtrack, will ravish all the funk diggers and Lalo Schifrin fans around the world.

This is the first-ever release of the soundtrack to Massimo Pirri’s 1977 film, which explores the controversial and then very current topic of left-wing armed struggle in Italy. By combining dark and haunting jazz-funk with ambient atmospheres and suspenseful electronic sounds, Lallo Gori creates a brilliant score that ends up sounding like an instrumental proto-hip hop record where Moog synths and drums take the lead.

Matthew Herbert continues his prolific run of soundtrack work with an original score for the acclaimed contemporary British horror film Starve Acre.

Starve Acre, directed by Daniel Kokotajlo and starring Matt Smith and Morfydd Clark, tells the story of a couple confronting the loss of their child in a remote rural setting. Drawing heavily on folklore and mythology, its foreboding examination of grief, faith and the supernatural demanded a score folding pastoral themes and otherworldly textures into an oppressive yet delicate whole.

Starve Acre OST comes after a noted run of soundtracks by Herbert, which includes acclaimed independent films such as The Wonder, The Cave and the Oscar nominated A Fantastic Woman. It's a minimalist exercise in tension and fragility which matches patient threads of instrumentation with atmospheric sound design — romantic swells of orchestration pitted against looming low-end pressure and disembodied, unnatural voices helping render the malevolent forces implied throughout the film.

The soundtrack also features two versions of 'Let Me In' — one sung by Matt Smith, and the other performed by folk and electronics duo Crewdson & Cevanne (Hugh Jones and Cevanne Horrocks-Hopayian). The song is an interpretation of 'It Hails, It Rains, It Snows, It Blows', an English folk song dated to the early 20th Century. From the pared-back acoustic lilt of Smith's version to the subtly building ornamentation of Crewdson & Cevanne's interpretation, it's a bewitching finale to the pervasive gloom of the wider score.

His soundtrack, due out in album form this Friday, hums with soft electricity, perfectly complementing the journey of the main character, Rue, a teenager caught in limbo between the euphoria of a drug high and the harsh consequences of addiction. “When you look back to your teenage days,” he says, “it feels semi-magical but semi-crazy and semi-psychotic. I wanted to make sure the music felt like those things.”

This score is an absolute tour de force. It’s arguably one of the most outstanding horror scores ever recorded. It’s ferocious, full of wailing, screaming, and guttural noises. Incredibly intense yet still retaining a musicality that Italian cinema excelled at in the 1970s. Dario Argento and Goblin were a match made in heaven, and I’m not sure anyone has created such a nightmarish mix of visuals and sounds in the history of cinema. In addition, the artwork by Randy Otiz is one of the best interpretations of this film I have ever seen! A Masterpiece in every way.

“Codice d’amore orientale” isn’t really Piero Vivarelli’s best film, but it features a great soundtrack (as most of
the movies of that era) written by Alberto Baldan Bembo (here under the moniker of Blue Marvin), a n excellent
composer and pianist, older brother of the way more famous song writer Dario. The nine tracks span several
genres and linger between Italian popular music and orchestral pop, Asian influences (couldn’t have been
different), breakbeat, funk and some experimentalisms. Perfect for any self-respecting DJ’s music selection!

Black Friday Record Store Day 2022 Reissue. Color: Gold. Limitation: 50th anniversary release celebrating the John Wayne western with a score composed by the living legend, John Williams. The Cowboys was the maestro’s biggest pre-Star Wars score. A much needed restoration job featuring a complete rebuild, remix and remaster was done for a 3000 unit limited edition CD re-issue that came out in 2018 and sold out. This double LP is the first ever official LP release and is pressed on gold vinyl exclusively for Black Friday 2022

Denis Villenueve’s masterful Blade Runner 2049 races into theaters this weekend and the film’s accompanying soundtrack, composed by legendary film score maestro Hans Zimmer, is now streaming in full.

The score was composed in tandem by Zimmer and his longtime collaborator Benjamin Wallfisch. The duo was brought in somewhat later in the production process, after the score’s initial composer, Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, ceased involvement due to creative differences.

Villeneuve explained his decision to replace Jóhannsson with Zimmer in an interview with Al Arabiya. “The thing I will say is that making movies is a laboratory,” he explained. “The movie needed something different, and I needed to go back to something closer to [the original film’s composer] Vangelis. Jóhann and I decided that I will need to go in another direction — that’s what I will say.”

The decision seemingly paid off, as Clint Worthington notes in his review of the film: “[Zimmer and Wallfisch] lean heavily on Vangelis’ original 1982 score for inspiration, but 2049 is refreshingly light on incidental music, mostly allowing the booming, immersive sound design to take center stage.”

As Editor-in-Chief Michael Roffman writes in his glowing A- review, the score is “a total evolution of what Vangelis set in motion way, way back in 1982. It’s louder, it’s gloomier, it’s heavier, and it’s much more expansive, all qualities one might tag with Villeneuve’s breathtaking sequel.”

In additional to Zimmer and Wallfisch’s original compositions, the soundtrack features songs by Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and Lauren Daigle.

Thanks to the brilliant debut “Night of the Living Dead” (1968), director and screenwriter George Romero is considered the creator of the ‘modern zombie’, a metaphor for the profoundly consumerist and capitalist society we live in, that was perfectly shown years later in “Dawn of the Dead” (1978); this movie was distributed in Italy as “Zombi”, with a different editing made by Dario Argento and a soundtrack once again composed by legendary Goblin.

“Zombi” is a very varied album where the electric guitars, taking the lead in the hard-rock track “Zaratozom”, often give way to keyboards, synthesizers and percussion elements of all kinds. The real masterpiece of the record remains the opening cut “L’Alba dei Morti Viventi” (Dawn of the Living Dead) with its sinister, unrelenting pace evoking a slow and unstoppable march of zombies, impossible to escape from.

Quartet Records, in collaboration with the Riz Ortolani estate, presents the expanded vinyl edition of one of the titles most requested by maestro Ortolani’s fans: the bizarre 1978 mondo movie Brutes AND Savages (aka Savana Selvaggia) Written by Jenny Craven and directed by Arthur Davis, this belongs to the select group of mondos that became notorious not for their shocking content, but for their lack of understanding of the genre. Surviving in two different cuts (92 mins and 107 mins), Brutes AND Savages focuses on mostly Latin American customs from local natives who do unspeakable things to animals. The single most entertaining feature of Brutes AND Savages is its music by Riz Ortolani, the “de facto” mondo master who was the key musical figure of the genre since its conception in Mondo Cane and its Grammy-winning, Oscar-nominated song, “More.” Ortolani scored countless mondos from Africa Addio (1966) through Addio ZIO TOM (1971) to, obviously, Cannibal Holocaust (1980), netting a few great titles along the way. The composer always found a way to create cool tunes that managed to tie together the insanely wide-ranging episodes that featured inconsistent quality and tone—and when all else failed, he created singular, individually successful cues for self-contained segments that saved as much of the film as possible. A 1978 LP release of the music from Brutes AND Savages is quite hard to come by. Export LPs originating from Australia and Hong Kong routinely fetch outrageously high prices on the secondary market. This new vinyl edition includes a crucial suspense cue that was cut for not meshing with the style of the record. The audio was mastered by Chris Malone from the original master tapes provided by the Ortolani estate, and the discs are pressed in transparent green-jungle, audiophile vinyl.

“The Last Wave” (also known as “Black Rain” in the US) was the final chapter in a trilogy of films scripted and directed by the leading auteur of the Australian New Wave, Peter Weir. “The Last Wave” was a landmark in existential horror. Sitting alongside other Australian eco-terror films (e.g. “Long Weekend”) the film featured a haunting electronic soundtrack that is as mysterious and beguiling as the spiritual themes of the film itself. With no LP issued after the films premiere in 1977, and together with the mystery surrounding the true identity of its enigmatic composer ‘Charles Wain’, the score is a largely unheard recording of pioneering experimental film electronics, easily compared to the music that contemporaries Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream were composing for Australian films during the same period or the electronic soundtracks of John Carpenter. Tense atonal electronics, synthesizer drones and manipulated Didgeridoo all perfectly capture the film’s ominous atmosphere, punctuating the slow hypnotic pace of this brooding supernatural thriller. All original 12 tracks have been sourced from the original stereo master tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl. The deluxe packaging includes archival film stills and original press material.

Old friends Julian Bates and Alex Gray —working together as Mighty Truth for the first time since 1995’s From The City To The Sea — filled a car with old analogue synths, kids’ noise toys, and collected field recordings took a road trip down to hole up in an old water mill in southwest England’s bird-twittery, bee-loud Quantock hills.

Things got cinematic: unequal measures of early Weather Report, Wim Wenders, and Serge Gainsbourg kept them wonderfully lost in their imagined world. Back in London with guest singers Allonymous (Paris via Chicago) and Wayne Paul (London), they completed the album and decided to just call it Mighty Truth. With an aim to present the live show at moonlight pop-up cinema venues, Mighty Truth are here for the next chapter in their epic saga.

“Windows on the World” is a dramatic love story about a Mexican son's search for his father – a missing, undocumented worker in The World Trade Center on 9/11. On the morning of September 11, 2001, Fernando (Ryan Guzman - “Step Up” franchise, “Boy Next Door") and his family in Mazatlan watch their TV in horror as the Twin Towers collapse. Fernando's father, Balthazar (Edward James Olmos) works in the Windows on the World restaurant. But he does not call to say he is safe. And there is no way to contact him. As the family grieves for his apparent loss, Fernando’s distraught mother swears she sees her husband on news footage – escaping from the building ALIVE! Heroic Fernando decides to take the epic journey from Mexico to New York City to find his father and save his family. Along the way, he falls in love with empathetic Lia (Chelsea Gilligan), and befriends an eclectic group of international characters that help him restore his faith in humanity, as Fernando discovers the hard truths about his father, the melting pot of America, and the immigrant experience. The film also has memorable performances from Richard Cabral (“The Mayans”) Glynn Turman (“Cooley High,” “The Wire”) Julie Carmen (“In the Mouth of Madness,” “Gloria”) and Luna Lauren Velez (“Dexter,” “Oz.”) It was directed by Michael Olmos (“Filly Brown") - adopted son of Edward James Olmos, cinematography by Reynaldo Villalobos ("Risky Business,” “Urban Cowboy,” TV’s “Breaking Bad”), with a soundtrack that includes a new song with vocals and guitar by David Hidalgo (Los Lobos) and blues hall of famer Charlie Musselwhite on harmonica. Plus original jazz music from members of the SFJAZZ Collective (past and present), Eric Harland, David Sanchez, Edward Simon, Obed Calvaire, Robin Eubanks, Matt Penman, along with Taylor Eigsti and Ethan Iverson (The Bad Plus)...as well as tracks from Les Claypool (Primus) and Fela Kuti.

William Tyler composed the music for First Cow, the new A24 film directed by Kelly Reichardt, almost entirely on several of his guitars and a dulcimer. In First Cow, Kelly Reichardt once again trains her perceptive and patient eye on the Pacific Northwest, this time evoking an authentically hardscrabble early nineteenth century way of life. A taciturn loner and skilled cook (John Magaro) has traveled west and joined a group of fur trappers in Oregon Territory, though he only finds true connection with a Chinese immigrant (Orion Lee) also seeking his fortune; soon the two collaborate on a successful business, although its longevity is reliant upon the clandestine participation of a nearby wealthy landowner's prized milking cow. Reichardt again shows her distinct talent for depicting the peculiar rhythms of daily living and ability to capture the immense, unsettling quietude of rural America.
