Lush and soulful avant-pop from El Paso, Texas. What Remains is the debut full length album from THE Rosie Varela Project, created by singer/songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist Rosie Varela of acclaimed shoegaze band EEP, whose albums have been praised by tastemaking outlets such as Kexp and The Big Takeover. The album is a lush and emotional sonic tapestry that is an honest examination of life’s difficulties through an adventurous musical sensibility, ranging from avant-pop to dream pop to psychedelic folk. Varela’s music has been applauded by Backseat Mafia, who said, “Varela’s strength has always been in her melodies – mysterious and magical layers of dreamy lines,” and by Dkfm, who said, "Rosie’s angelic voice floats above it all, reminding me of Liz Fraser in her prime."

Recorded as part of the same daydreaming puzzle as Unwishing Well, Still Clouds at Noon brings out the slowcore/sadcore elements that drift through The Reds, Pinks & Purples’ melancholy catalogue. Donaldson names '90s hometown San Francisco acts such as American Music Club and the more obscure Timco as pivotal to his guitar playing and development as a songwriter, both of which shine bright here. The slower tempo ballads on Still Clouds… often culminate in heavy fuzz drenched codas and showcase the more abstract poetic side of Donaldson’s lyricism. There’s an inherent pop-sensibility always at work though, with ear-worm melodies appearing over intoxicating circular riffs.

Formerly a Bandcamp only digital release, this white vinyl version is remastered and adds two unreleased tracks, one featuring Mark Monnone from Australian pop-legends The Lucksmiths on bass. Edition of 500.

In the oblivious environment surrounding his hideaway lake cabin he produced an album that is rich and diverse in its sonic palette, ranging from harshly distorted synth-peaks, cinematic soundscapes, all the way to avant-garde contemporary classical, and jazz music. It is an album that invites the listener to explore and discover not just the intimate self: it is also a very personal, intuitive observation and reflection on the world that we are living in today. Certain instruments are very prominent. An old piano that was left in Raz’ apartment by a friend that he found joy in playing. One can hear a certain curiosity in the performance of this newly found, dust layered treasure (Bardot). Sonically the album is an attempt to blend acoustic sound recordings with synthesized sounds, and to blend musical genres into one. It is an acoustic expression of the transformative times we are living in, a realm of mankind being mastered by technology. The gap of this transformational process is a glitchy moment of time. It is portrayed on the front cover image of the album, by glitch artist Azamat Akhmadbaev.
