Music From Memory is pleased to announce the upcoming release of ‘Salt And Sugar Look The Same’, a collaborative album from Tim Koh and Sun An.

Tim Koh is an American multi-instrumentalist and visual artist born and raised in Los Angeles. He has been touring, releasing music and showing art works internationally for nearly two decades. Sun An is a Southern California-based graphic designer, art director, and sound designer who has self-released music since 2012.

‘Salt And Sugar Look The Same’ plays somewhat like a dreamlike collage; across 18 short compositions, finger-picked guitars melt with electronics and warped samples to create a form of American Primitivism bent and refracted through Tim and Sun’s unique lens.

Their collaborative journey unfolded gradually, exchanging snippets via email over the span of a year or so, Sun in LA and Tim in Berlin. Amidst personal struggles and uncertainties, the act of recording and composing became a refuge, a safe space where they could navigate life's complexities together. Though they didn't converse much, mostly just sending music, their musical dialogue spoke volumes, shaping a narrative that evolved naturally over time. As they shared their musical ideas, they discovered a profound sense of connection and understanding with one another. The music became a conduit for healing, bridging the gaps between them and offering comfort in times of need.

Their musical influences and backgrounds anchored them. From reminiscing about past scenes to exploring cultural intricacies of being Korean American in Los Angeles, infused with a natural sense of shared identity, their collaboration reflected a mergence of old and new memories into a hallucinatory, dream-like experience. Across the 18 compositions that make up the album, incense emerges as a poignant motif, symbolizing the passage of time. Each incense stick becomes a vessel carrying the essence of moments gone by, while the holder becomes the custodian of these ephemeral memories.

‘Salt And Sugar Look The Same’ invites the listener on a boundary-transcending journey of introspection, joy, and pain, creating an experience that lingers long after the last note fades.

Soft rock"s seminal band, The Blue Jean Committee, originated from blue-collar Chicago when the now legendary Clark Honus (Bill Hader) and Gene Allen (Fred Armisen) dropped out of sausage school to create the band of their dreams. Is this the future sound of black American jazz - an inclusive yet rhythmically complex groove based music that owes as a much to black urban culture - predominantly hip hop and trap music rhythms - as it does to jazz improv techniques and rhythms? It's certainly interesting that similar elements swim through the music of Robert Glasper and Kamasi Washington, who along with Scott are currently big box office, pulling-in substantial new audiences for their music. Ruler Rebel is the first album of a trilogy celebrating 100 years of recorded jazz, and will be followed by Diaspora and Emancipation Procrastination later. At the heart of this music are polyrhythmic grooves that might come from jazz, New Orleans black Indian music, trap, Malian rhythm Kassa Soro and the interplay between an SPD drum machine and live drumming. Largely featuring Scott's trumpet, the record introduces his articulate and frequently eloquent voice as the narrator of Ruler Rebel, much like the Persian Princess Scheherazade narrating her tales of the mysterious east to Sultan Shahriar over one thousand and one nights. A key track is `Encryption', a summation of Scott's direction of travel on the album. Here the running rhythm is derived from the New Orleansian Afro-Indian culture married with Malian Kassa Soro. This is in turn is layered with SPD-SX electronic drum machine and sampling machine played by Joe Dyson and Cory Fonsville that introduce rhythmic elements from trap and hip hop. Sounds complex? Well it is, but it works. Other highlights include `New Orleansian Love Song' and `New Orleansian Love Song II' and a celebration of Afro-Indian culture on `The Coronation of K. Atunde Adjuah'.

In the years since the release of Water From Your Eyes’ groundbreaking effort, “Somebody Else’s Song,” the duo have taken the world by storm, becoming one of the most consistent and beloved experimental pop bands of the era. They’ve toured with Interpol, Squid, Palm, Real Estate, and Pavement, earning a reputation as critically acclaimed songwriters and a stellar live act with a boisterous presence. This October marks five years since the release and Exploding In Sound Records are celebrating with a limited edition reissue on green vinyl with purple and black splatter!

Back in 2019, Brooklyn’s Water From Your Eyes had been evolving and experimenting with their sound. With “Somebody Else’s Song,” the band felt that they had found their place, the album an amalgamation of their past releases, honing in previously explored aesthetics but combining and rearranging ideas to capture feelings of self-reflection and personal growth. At their core, the duo of Nate Amos and Rachel Brown make experimental pop music, songs you can dance to, songs that will stick in your head long after you’ve heard them. The sound of Water From Your Eyes is far more expansive however, and “Somebody Else’s Song” is blissfully unclassifiable.

The lines of genre have blurred beyond recognition. The landscape flickers between haunting ambiance and noisy immersion, electronic and acoustic elements expressing emotional and mental states that are ever changing. “Somebody Else’s Song” was their first true “New York album” since the band’s relocation from Chicago, and much of the weight comes from the personal change inherent from living in a new place as life continues to whir around us. The duo took their time, the ideas coming into formation over the course of two years. That patience is apparent as the album unfolds, a balance between vulnerability and enormous shapeshifting rhythms.

Phosphorescent’s Matthew Houck has announced "Revelator", a new album of nine original songs out April 5 that marks his debut for Verve Records. Grappling with the quiet obstacles and unspoken truths that come with the gravity of navigating home, partnership and family, Revelator ruminates on questions that can be difficult to answer: why a seemingly idyllic life can be defined by an ambient sense of dread, or the natural ways we drift from each other and from ourselves. But true to its title, this is a work intent on finding hard-won reclamation, reinvention and revelation in life's day-to-day.

Since 2001, Matthew has been active in the Indie Rock scene and has accumulated eight studio albums to date – performing at countless festivals internationally solo and on guitar and vocals with a full six-piece bands. He has collaborated with fellow Indie greats such as Father John Misty and mixed his 2018 record with Vance Powell (Jack White, Phish, Chris Stapleton). A career highlight includes his 2013 record: ‘Muchacho’, his most recent album was 2018’s ‘C’est La Vie’. Currently based in Nashville, TN – Phosphorescent continues to be a notable indie figurehead and his return after five years is anticipated by fans and critics alike.

The studies with Goffredo Petrassi and the association with Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza let the Avant-garde playing an important role in the career of Ennio Morricone, who wrote many contemporary pieces for himself, but then the author composed soundtracks where dissonance played a major role. For the Italian edition of the film Space: 1999 (1975), the cult British TV series, he composed a very neurotic Jazz with muted horns. Also for the science-fiction film THE Humanoid (1979) Ennio Morricone created hallucinating strings scores mixed with electronic effects. For Sacco E Vanzetti (1971) an electronic score by Walter Bianchi evokes all the drama of the undeserved death sentence of the two protagonists. Experimental music of great impact in the film and off the screen for famous thrillers such as THE Death Dealer (1974), Short Night OF Glass Dolls (1971). Avant-garde music has always been present in Elio Petri’s films set to music by Morricone such as Property IS NO Longer A Theft (1973). Avant-garde music in the noir cinema of Violent City (1970) and A Pure Formal- ITY (1994) and in auteur films such as Garden OF Delights (1967) and Sarah’s Last MAN (1972).

Ennio Morricone is known throughout the world for the Italian Western genre, but most of all for his famous soundtracks for Sergio Leone’s masterpieces which have entered into popular culture on an international level, and here represented by iconic themes such as A Fistful OF Dollars (1964), FOR A FEW Dollars More (1965), Once Upon A Time IN THE

West (1968), A Fistful OF Dynamite (1971) with extraordinary soloists such as the coro dei cantori Moderni di ales- sandroni, the whistle of Alessandro Alessandroni, the harmonica of Franco De Gemini, and Edda Dell’Orso’s soprano voice. For the Westerns starring the legendary Giuliano Gemma – A Pistol FOR Ringo and THE Return OF Ringo – both directed by Duccio Tessari, he wrote the songs “Angel Face” (with lyrics by Gino Paoli) and “The Return of Ringo” respectively performed by Maurizio Graf with pop music arrangements that were popular at the time. With PistolS Don’t Argue (1964) Morricone experiments with a still undefined pre-Leone sound, Death Rides A Horse (1967) presents a main theme for guitars ostinatos, exotic flutes and choir. For Life IS Tough, EH Providence? Ennio Morricone creates a theme that mixes religious elements for a female choir with modern arrangements. And A Fist Goes West (1981) a late Western in which the composer himself interprets the Indian’s screams.

Suffolk-based singer songwriter James Varda’s fourth and final album before his death from a long battle with cancer in 2015, Chance And Time, set for a vinyl only reissue on Unspun Heroes is an astonishing aural document of a creative, forward -thinking musician coming to terms with a life slowly evaporating away. There is hubris, melancholy and an undeniable weight of sadness in these ten songs but, miraculously, there is also a stoic realisation and acceptance from Varda that is both heart-wrenching and deeply affecting. On Chance And Time Varda reconnects the human spirit to the land, a heavy, fearful heart to an optimistic soul, and in a beautiful poetic flourish gives a real tangible sense of loving and hope to his family and friends offering genuine reassurance and even, at times, a green light for celebration.

Carrying a certain air of mystique, that same sense of a ‘other worldliness’ if you will of say a Karen Dalton or a Jeff Buckley, Varda’s delivery and tone carries huge emotional weight here and an unique ability to add an honest perspective and warmth to the starkest of realities. The hard hitting impact of the opening tracks is blunt and sharply defined. There is pain, hardship, and fear wrapped in these tales - ‘The Doctor Spoke, Two Hearts Broke” - made all the more hitting as this is a real life journey in the here and now being catalogued. As we move towards the second half of the record there is something even deeper and truly incredible at play. Varda’s whole demeanor is one of understanding and acceptance - hear the celebratory shamanic vibe of the extraordinary ‘Pass It On’ and the poignantly reflective, chokingly sad finale ‘We Won’t Dream’ - bringing to an end a record that will leave a mark on everyone who hears it. Real art is both timeless and omnipresent, these songs from James Varda will hang in

the air forever and be there for those who look to find understanding, joy and a sense of hope. Chance And Time is both an extraordinary record and poignant study of life and living, of death and what comes after.

James Varda released four albums between 1988 and his death in 2015. A fledgling career beginning on the singer-songwriting folk scene where his arrival was met with both curiosity and critical acclaim as was his debut, the John Leckie produced Hunger. Any momentum was lost however as it would be ten years before the next, In The Valley was met with a ruffle of applause. Cancer took hold of the troubadour and for a number of years Varda lived life and wrote songs until The River And The Stars appeared like a phoenix from the flames as he began to wrestle with the realities of his situation. It’s a record that beautifully lays the ground for this his masterpiece that was to follow.

Unspun Heroes, a new label set up by Simon White, has the sole purpose of finding and reissuing albums that he considers both undervalued and seemingly ignored. All releases will be on vinyl only complete with Obi strip and extensive liner notes. Each will be individually numbered and limited.

Mista Sinista officially started DJing in 1986 and joined the X-Men in 1992. They later became the X-ecutioners and released two albums. Mista Sinista toured the world several times with the X-ecutioners and was a tour DJ for Common, Beatnuts, Joe Fatal and Lauryn Hill just to name a few. Some of his album credits include The Beatnuts Street Level LP and Common’s Resurrection LP. His work was also highlighted on Fat Joe’s sophomore release, Jealous One’s Envy. He continues to perform worldwide and is featured on The Rewind with DJ Safire which airs weekly on Beatminerz Radio. Polaroid Buffalo Club is a surf/psych pop band based in Athens, Greece that consists of Kostas Miliaras (vox , guitar), Giorgos Papakostas (organ), Vasilis Gakis (bass, backing vox) and Dimitris Kalonaros (drums). Polaroid Buffalo Club would describe their sound as retro pop but with a modern touch. The band's influences derive from 60's surf, San Francisco sunshine folk/pop and moody garage to today's neo-psychedelia and indie surf music. Names like The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Strawberry Alarm Clock, The Mamas and The Papas, The Byrds but also Allah-Las, Mystic Braves, The Growlers and Levitation Room are easily identifiable on their sound. "B-movie Sundown" was produced and mixed by Kostas Miliaras and it was mastered by John Vulgaris (drummer for Bazooka). The song "Sun Tribe Ritual" features the well-known Austrian psych singer-songwriter Juleah on drone backing vocals and the cover art was done by Dustin Kalynuk (aka Chakras System). B-Movie Sundown represents the band the most so far, because its memember brings its own idiosyncracy of playing, giving a unique quality to the final result. Also, before the new album they've released the semi-acoustic video/EP "Sunroom Session" in which they've also played unreleased stuff from their second album. On that session you can see/hear Giorgos playing acoustic guitar instead of keys and Vasilis playing percussion instead of bass. Sunroom Session was recorded and mixed by Kostas as well and it was mastered by Gregg Kollias (guitarist for Echo Train), the photo of the cover was taken by Maria Lekaki and Kostas did the design of it. The vinyl release was made from B-otherSide records in Audiophile 200 gr. vinyls, at 300 hand numbered copies, from which the first 150 include the "Sunroom Session" DVD and all of them include a 2 page color insert with photo and song's lyrics.
