Relentless techno powerhouses Octave One stride in 2022 with a brand new release that re-affirms their status across two essential tracks. 2021 was another busy year for the Burden Brothers, who re-introduced the world to their Never On Sunday alias. The project first started in the 90s as an outlet for deeper, more introspective sounds and was fittingly brought back last year to great acclaim. The Detroit duo’s Locus of Control series also hit volume number three and the iconic Octave One live show continued to light up clubs everywhere from Barcelona, Paris and Geneva to LA and New York. Despite that, they still had time to cook up more of their famously soulful techno in the studio, the first two tracks of which are presented here.Opener ‘The Blue Drift’ surges ahead on waves of rattling metallic synths. Well swung claps bring that irresistible sense of groove, while twisted melodies add raw dynamics. Add in the heavy underlying bass and you have a classic Octave One track that is both physical yet emotional. On the flip side is ‘It-Just-Is’ a powerful statement of intent. It’s a stripped back track where house and techno meet - there is a seductive slide to the drums and potency in the turbulent synths which bring the energy. A true Holy Grail from the Cloud One catalog, “Don’t Let My Rainbow Pass Me By” is the third of a string of titles on Golden Flamingo produced by the P&P duo of Patrick Adams and Peter Brown and featuring vocals from “Guardian Angel” singer Margot Williams.

Similar to previous Cloud One’s productions, this record had all the elements of a Patrick Adams classic, but with vocal arrangements that foreshadowed the work he would do with Inner Life and Jocelyn Brown at Salsoul. Perhaps not so much of a coincidence then that Margot Williams would provide backing vocals on Inner Life’s Second and final album.

Even though it was originally released in 1981, “Don’t Let My Rainbow Pass Me By” is still championed by high-profile deejays today. Over the years, it’s been notably sampled in Basement Jaxx’s Romeo and covered by Todd Terje and Prins Thomas in “Reinbagan"" as a Dub-Disco cut. Available for the first time since it’s original release, our only piece of advise is to don’t let this classic pass you by.

A year after their impressive last album Burn It Down, Detroit techno legends Octave One are back with a nine track double EP that again shows they are masters of big hypnotic grooves.
Entitled Love by Machine, the album's name is a nod to the fact that the Burden brothers are such revered masters of their hardware. Both in the studio, where they cook up atmospheric house and techno with soaring synths and vocals and also in the live arena, where they are celebrated as one of the most accomplished and forward thinking performers in the game today. That is all the more impressive when you bear in mind they have been active since the ‘80s, most often releasing on their own 430 West label, which is where they appear again here.

"Technology is only a tool, which we also had in mind during the recording process.” Adds Lawrence. "We decided to go back to how we used to make our records, when we didn't have so many ‘sophisticated' audio devices. Back to when we interacted in the studio together as musicians.”

Things open up with the loose metallic percussive line that is In Mono, which sets the machine made tone and is filled with promise. Locator then immediately gets to action with a gallivanting techno kick and various synth lines wrapping round each other as you get sucked into the groove. Just Don't Speak (Midnight Sun Redub) is a more deep and house leaning track with big feel good piano keys and slithering synths that will get hands in the air. Proving they have real range, 7 B4 Dawn is a moody and reserved cut with subtle acid pricks, hip swinging claps and a spaced out dead of night feel.

The second half of the album offers peak time business in the form of the spectacular Bad Love II, the whirring and cosmic Sounds of Jericho and the big loops and fluid grooves of [Where] Time Collides. Pain Pressure is a wonky number with big bassline and a focus on percussive patterns as well as some vocals with real attitude and last cut 8 B4 Dawn ends things in a downbeat and sombre way with sad chords and emotive strings. It is pure Detroit, much like the whole album, and rounds out another fine release from these most revered veterans.

The punk movement also came fully clothed. Mal-One’s new single talks about the fashion side of Punk that ran parallel to the music. These clothes were supplied from Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwoods emporium situated at 430 King’s Road, the epicentre of the Punk Movement itself. The clothes were not cheap and you needed deep pockets to buy them. But you also needed an attitude to wear them, as many factions were not so appreciative of them, especially the ‘Teddy Boys’. You had to run the gauntlet of the King’s Road on a Saturday from Sloane Square to the Worlds End. A tricky mile, in which you always had to keep your eyes open from enemy attack.

The clothes were pieces of art and deserve their time in the spotlight and perhaps even in song. Hope you appreciate the gesture.
