Cecil Taylor’s Live At The Cafe Montmartre has been lauded by critics as a landmark performance, "among the greatest live recordings in jazz” (Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings).
The recordings capture Taylor in peak form, supported by the great Sunny Murray on drums and Jimmy Lyons on alto sax, at the famed Cafe Montmartre in Copenhagen on November 23, 1962. The set is among very few recordings documenting Taylor’s playing between 1962 to 1966. The set has been remastered by Dave Gardner for a double LP pressing at Pallas Group in Germany on audiophile-grade vinyl, including updated package artwork, exclusively for RSD Black Friday 2024.

The planets align this October as the mighty Sun Ra Arkestra, under the direction of the maestro Marshall Allen, release their first studio album in over twenty years, ‘Swirling’. Recorded at Rittenhouse Soundworks in Philadelphia, the new recording represents the continuation of a heartfelt rebirth of the Arkestra under Allen’s guidance since Sun Ra left the planet in 1993, gaining new generations of followers from their regular touring across the globe. With a big band line-up featuring long-standing Arkestra members including Danny Ray Thompson (rip), Michael Ray, Vincent Chancey, Knoel Scott, Cecil Brooks, Atakatune (rip), Elson Nascimento and Tyler Mitchell, the album is a full-blooded celebration of Sun Ra’s legacy. Tracks include brand new arrangements of Arkestra staples ‘Angels And Demons At Play’, ‘Satellites Are Spinning’, ‘Door Of The Cosmos’ and ‘Rocket No. 9’ alongside lesser known gems; the rousing blues ‘Darkness’ is recorded here for the first time, resurrected from the Ra archives by Marshall Allen. Other highlights include an epic version of ‘Seductive Fantasy’ (first recorded on Ra’s ‘On Jupiter’ LP in 1979), the freeform sonic blast of ‘Infinity / I’ll Wait For You’ and a first ever recording of the Marshall Allen swing composition, ‘Swirling’. “We truly hope that this recording brings much joy to a planet which is so deeply in need of a spirit sound and vibration,” states saxophonist Knoel Scott. “We hope it contributes to a change in the ominous direction of man’s journey through the cosmos.” “This new release is the Arkestra’s love offering to the world,” concludes Marshall Allen. “Beta music for a better world.”

In the course of our deep research, we sometimes discover a hidden thread that unites musicians, songwriters, artists, and poets linked by music. Mustafa's 'Polygamy' is no exception. Apart from the music - the main reason we decided to work on this first ever re-press, a jewel at the crossroads between jazz funk, spiritual jazz and proto rap - are the many other things that make Mustafa an intriguing and fascinating character. For starters, he was a childhood friend of the Ayler brothers with whom he played in different formations. He also played with other beloved figures such as Noah Howard and Charles Tyler, on a still unreleased album recorded for Amiri Baraka's Jihad label, and worked with The Legendary Master Brotherhood and Steve Reid. This and much more will be revealed in a detailed interview between Tony Higgins and Mustafa's family (his sisters and children are all musicians), as well as an insight into the recording of the album with Gregory Bufford, the drummer for the session.

The World Of Cecil Taylor is the fifth studio album by radical, free jazz pianist pioneer, Cecil Taylor.Taylor's music is often described as ahead of its time. And it's easy to imagine what the reaction of the average jazz fan was to this 1961 recording. It is arguably a tremendous departure from what jazz was widely considered to be at the time. At once a modern approach to standard material and a genre pushing exploration, it is a document of an artist pushing the boundaries of what jazz meant and where it was capable of going. This brand new reissue is available on CD and LP (180g) and has been remastered from the original Candid Records master tapes by Bernie Grundman.

“What might’ve been, is dead and is done,” so begins the opening track on Penny Goodwin’s ‘Portrait of a Gemini’. The words are surprisingly somber for an album as beautiful as this, but oddly prophetic. Despite Goodwin’s unmistakable talent, her sole album “Portrait of a Gemini” only ever received a private pressing of 2000 copies, and she quickly faded into obscurity afterwards.

Yet, one listen is enough to make it immediately obvious why original pressings of this album have attracted expensive premiums. From the orchestral string arrangements on “Today Is The First Day”, to the heavenly Hammond organ playing on album closer, “Amazing Grace”, the immense talent of Goodwin and the musicians supporting her is constantly clear. Even when they take on covers of songs such as Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Goin On” and Gil Scott Heron’s “Lady Day & John Coltrane”, the singular voice of Goodwin seems to make the songs her own. Perhaps the greatest testament to this album’s timelessness is rapper and notorious crate digger, Tyler, the Creator’s sampling of the latin-jazz infused “Slow Hot Wind” on his most recent album.

It was originally released on Taylor's own Unit Core label, subsequently more widely released on the Freedom label, and has received critical praise, including a 4/5 star review from the Rolling Stone Jazz Record Guide. Previously out of print for decades, the phenomenal work is finally coming back to vinyl with an audiophile-grade pressing from Pallas Group. ‘Earthly Delights’ is a forgotten 1978 free-jazz masterpiece by bass player, composer and improviser David Wertman, alongside his Sun Ensemble.

Born in 1952 and raised in Queens NY, Wertman’s distinctive upright playing style was entirely self-taught. He cut his teeth in the notorious New York Jazz lofts, jamming for hours and hours with the likes of Billy Bang, Arthur Blythe, Marion Brown, Steve Reid, Dave Pike, William Parker, Brandon Ross and Charles Tyler to name but a few.

‘Earthly Delights’ is the first recording by the Sun Ensemble band and features the original line-up of Greg Wall (Baritone Saxophone), Jay Conway (Drums), John Sprague Jr. (Flute and Percussion), David Swerdlove (Soprano/Alto Saxophone), and John Zieman (Synthesizer). John Sprague Jr. financed and produced the album, releasing it on his own label Sweet Earth Records, a short-lived but bountiful imprint, perhaps best known for issuing Sun Ra And His Arkestra’s 1979 album “The Other Side Of The Sun”.

‘Earthly Delights’ is perhaps best described as loosely composed, or highly improvised, depending on where you stand on such subjective matters. Containing just 4 compositions, ‘Earthly Delights’ explores man’s relationship with nature; at times subtle and delicate, at times wide and sweeping in its gestures. The record’s spiritual message is conveyed by heartfelt, virtuoso performances from all six players, drifting together seamlessly from one sonic wave to the next.

The original recordings released on cassette tape serve as highlights of performances by John Taylor and a group of elite musicians, including Kenny Wheeler, with whom Taylor has collaborated since his debut album "Pause, And Think Again". These recordings represent the finest moments of British jazz in the 1970s, serving as a documentary of that era's musical excellence.
