Since releasing her joint LP 'These Days' with long-time friend and collaborator Daniel Casimir on the jazz re:freshed imprint in 2019, Hirst has been working on her first solo album scheduled for release in early-2024. Funded by PRS Foundation's Women Make Music and the Mobo Help Musicians Fund, Hirst's new music is set to be a jazz re:freshed family affair. 'Magic' features Richard Spaven on drums, Sarah Tandy on piano and Tomorrow's Warriors StringTing. It is produced and arranged by Casimir who also plays electric, upright and synth bass on the recording.

A celebration of inspiring stories of the women around her, 'Magic' pays homage to their robust capacity to rise to any challenge, including motherhood, a journey which Hirst embarked upon herself, making the track all the more poignant. As Hirst shares: "Since having my own child in between writing and releasing this record, I've realised motherhood itself isn't magic, rather there is magic in being a mother. Performing 'Magic' now brings a deeper level of understanding for me. When you give birth to a child you too are reborn." Hirst urges listeners to invoke their own sense of magic, underpinned by the notoriously underground UK musical heritage ofDrum'n'Bass, Spaven fully in his element, piercing through the pensive string melodies and euphoric harmonies overarching Hirst's ethereal tone.

Hirst and award-winning bassist Casimir released their debut album 'These Days' in 2019, described as'a masterpiece' by The Wicked SoundandCLASH as 'deft and soulful'andsupported by Jazzwise and Jazz FM. In 2022, Hirst appeared in the AppletonEstate Jamaica Jazz Sessions, recorded a live session at Abbey Road Studios and produced the jazz re:freshed OuternationalShowcase at Sxsw, adding a string of successful podcasts to her bow for Afropop and Manchester Jazz Festival. One of two Be With forays into the archives of revered British library institution Conroy, we present one of our favourites on the label - the super in-demand Dramatic Tempi / Larry Robbins Background Rhythms, originally released in 1975. Rare and sought-after for many years now, this is one of those cult library LPs that rarely turns up on even the deepest dig. As a single LP, Dramatic Tempi / Larry Robbins Background Rhythms is two distinctly different collections of music. The first side, Dramatic Tempi, is made up of four tracks each from Sammy Burdson and Klaus Weiss. Sammy Burdson was one of the many, many aliases of the mighty Austrian composer, arranger and conductor, Gerhard Narholz. Founder of adored library label Sonoton in 1965, and a classically trained composer, his work runs from easy listening through pop, jazz and electronic, to avant-garde. About as cult as it gets when it comes to library music legends (German or otherwise), he produced essential records on German library labels Coloursound, Selected Sound and Sonoton.

A modal masterpiece from 1959, Kind of Blue is a true classic that never gets old, no matter how many times you listen to it. Bill Evans’ understated piano is the perfect foil for Miles’ melodies, contrasted by the soaring alto sax of Cannonball Adderley; Jimmy Cobb and Paul Chambers keep the rhythm section steady but unobtrusive, allowing Miles and Cannonball to shine. ‘So What’ and ‘Freddie Freeloader’ are seductive, deceptive gems, imparting all the frustration, begrudging and joy as only a great jazz record can; ‘Blue In Green’ and ‘All Blue’ have melancholy hues and ‘Flamenco Sketches’ a precursor to Sketches Of Spain. Every household should have at least one copy of Kind Of Blue, one of the greatest records ever made.

During the late 1950s, the iconic tenor saxophonist John Coltrane was exploring different milieus with various associates, most notably reconnecting with Miles Davis during a time when the latter was working with pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummers Jimmy Cobb and Art Taylor. These players are featured on the 1958 session that would yield Stardust, released by Prestige four years later, and although comprised of four standard cover tunes, Trane’s playing is so supremely emotive and the hard-bop arrangements so subtle and engaging that the LP becomes another deep audio dive that sounds better with every listen.

Pique-nique Recordings is proud to present 'Investigate and Enjoy', a deep musical conversation between two of New York City’s most prolific musicians, Dave Harrington and Kenny Wollesen. Harrington (Darkside) and Wollesen (Sex Mob) use a shared language of texture, groove, and space to craft intricate, free-formed, and inventive experimental music. Wollesen’s forceful percussion opens up side A, which grooves heavily underneath Harrington’s skittering electronics. The flip side features sparse yet rich guitar tones on what Harrington and Wollesen refer to as an “improvised ballad.” Both pieces resonate with a powerful mood as hints of late-Talk Talk and Battles permeate these unique recordings. This release is part of an ongoing series that aims to capture the New York City jazz scene in its current, always evolving form. Multi-talented jazz composer Benny Reid once again realigns with Fat Beats Records for the 7-inch release of an instrumental jazz rendition of, “Shook Ones Pt. II.” The release finds itself three years removed from Benny’s #1 Bilboard charting album, Follow The Leader, a re-imagining of Eric B & Rakim’s classic work. Due to its success and the subsequent collaboration with Rakim, the continued alliance with the indie hip-hop powerhouse was a no-brainer.

The only way to reimagine a classic such as “Shook Ones” is to do so with the utmost care and integrity. Fortunately, Reid found himself immersed in the absolute majesty of the source material, some of which was directly performed by his idols (Herbie Hancock), as well as teachers (Barry Harris). The brilliance of the original record created a dichotomy of sorts. The material is so desirable to replay, but how to do so in order to warrant a rebirth? The answer lied in stretching the boundaries of his acoustic instruments and jazz background. Seven days later, Reid emerged from his solitary examination of Mobb Deep with his breathtaking rendition of “Shook Ones”; a six minute journey consisting of lush sonic landscapes, imaginative twists and turns, and fantastic grooves, all while transforming Havoc and Prodigy’s original lyrics to instrumental melody.

Havoc became aware of Reid’s work and an immediate partnership was formed. He authorized Reid to re-record an entire instrumental cover album of Mobb Deep’s The Infamous - the first of its kind - in an entirely live acoustic, sample free interpolation completely arranged and performed by Reid himself. The result is the appropriately titled, Benny Reid Presents: The Infamous Live.

With the full length offering set to drop top of 2023, Benny is eager to release the limited 7-inch pressing of Shook Ones, Pt. II, + Remixes, which comes equipped with two non-album remixes; Pyrmds Remix and an Extended Jazz Remix.

Reimagining Mobb Deep's iconic 1995 opus ‘The Infamous’, NYC-based saxophonist and composer Benny Reid's ambitious new project is a collection of acoustic, sample-free renditions, built from the ground up, performed entirely by the multi-instrumentalist auteur. The forthcoming ‘The Infamous Live’ comes on the heels of Reid’s Billboard-charting take of Eric B & Rakim’s ‘Follow The Leader’. From this, Mobb Deep's Havoc discovered his work and authorized him to reconstruct the timeless Mobb Deep album, giving Reid input and working with him in the studio to complete the project. His limited 7" of "Shook Ones Pt. II" previewing the project, sold out quickly upon release in December 2022. Reid is a forward-thinking jazz musician with a bent toward mixing expansive post-bop improvisation with atmospheric contemporary jazz styles. He released his first two albums on the prestigious Concord label and has been working with Fat Beats to create interesting, progressive tributes to the hip-hop albums that defined his youth.
