Side A. Reuban Wilson "We're are in love" sample flip sets the tone for Nas Memory Lane (Sittin' in Da Park) sampled and chopped by 1 only. DJ Premier sampled multiple elements from Wilson’s original composition, including the organ, percussion and distinctive wordless backing vocals. The seldom-sampled track is now irrevocably tied to this classic East Coast jam. Galaxy crew decided to give it a Re mastered rinse, chop up the intro break to back to life for 45 fans to appreciate.

Real heads might be familiar with outsider boogie track - Christopher Jay – 'What Do You Want Me To Do', an excellent hypnotic spin for those in the know. We will bring you this further down the line but first we have an Amazing unreleased banger from Christopher. A kind of floaty Disco / modern thing with wonky drums and bags of charm. This record is such an earworm you will end up walking around singing it for days, and that catch guitar hook….how was this never released, pure fire!! The flip feels like it could be in an 80s montage in a good way, yaughty sunshine vibes.

Hailing from Los Angeles, Jimmy Tamborello has been a key figure in refining what today is considered electronica for over 20 years. "The Seas Trees See" is the first of two Dntel albums to be released in 2021 by Morr Music in collaboration with Les Albums Claus: a free-floating and rather loose stroke of musical genius, giving ambience a whole new meaningful context. It combines crackles and hiss with deep, yet modest, synths and poignant, yet elegant, vocals and lyrics. "Away", its counterpart album, will follow later in 2021. It will showcase Dntel's unapologetic love for pop music from a long-gone era, presenting yet another aspect of his multi-faceted personality. Dntel has always covered many musical grounds - from the pop-infused hits on "Life Is Full Of Possibilities" (Plug Research, 2001) to his much more abstract works on "Aimlessness" (Pampa Records, 2012), "Human Voice" (Leaving Records, 2014), and his electronics for The Postal Service (Sub Pop). Whatever his style - Tamborello has retained his very own musical voice. When it comes to producing music, it can be a good idea to get away from the studio and find a more relaxed environment. Inspiration does not necessarily require huge bass bins. Fewer pieces of gear make it easier to really focus on ideas first and let them be. After recording "Hate In My Heart" - his most recent album, released in 2018 - this way, Tamborello continued working in that fashion, mainly jamming and getting ideas together for upcoming live shows. One of the first results of this creative process was the opening track of "The Seas Trees See" - a cover version of "The Lilac and the Apple", originally recorded by Californian folk singer Kate Wolf in 1977. Tamborello turns the acapella song into a vocoder-like extravaganza. Working with the original recording, the track perfectly sets the tone for what "The Seas Trees See" turns out to be - a quiet yet mesmerizing journey through sound and emotion, bringing together his very own sound design, disguised samples and an...

The Still Brothers are Andrew LeCoche (Ula Ruth) and Evan Heinze (The Shacks) ‘Wake Up’ was created in a New York winter on a cloudy day. The song's bones were sculpted in the classic Still Brothers' fashion making use of a collection of favourite sounds. It came to life when Brazilian friend and collaborator Marina B heard the track in her sleep and thought of the song's lyrics as she woke up. It might take you to that place in-between dreams and the waking life, where you are pulled in and out of a state of slumber. It incidentally speaks to the abrupt change that was about to fall upon the world in early 2020. Between the singing in Portuguese and the sounds of subway doors, the song is just alienating enough to make anyone these days to feel right at home. ‘Wake Up’ was mixed by Will Dorey aka Skinshape and mastered by Alex DeTurk. The cover art was designed by Sofia Ohanna. Inspired by subway preachers, jazz funerals and Hip-Hop ‘The Deep’ serves as an introduction to the dazzling skills of New York production duo The Still Brothers. Their debut track breaks open with a reverend crying out about the transgressions we have committed against each other. He then observes that so many of us are throwing up our hands in an act of surrendering. A poignant sentiment in these troubling times and one that will resonate throughout the world.

Wewantsounds is delighted to announce the reissue of Robert Cotter's ultra rare 1976 album, 'Missing You' in partnership with Robert Cotter himself. Originally released on the Tiger Lily label, the album was never properly released at the time and most of the copies were supposedly destroyed before they could hit record stores. The few copies that survived now command unreasonable prices. The album, recorded in New York between 1975 and 76, is also the only known recording by The Big Apple Band, which Robert Cotter was fronting at the time alongside fellow musicians Nile Rodgers, Bernard Edwards, Tony Thompson and Robert Sabino. The album's audio has been remastered and the reissue comes with the original artwork plus a 2 page insert featuring liner notes by Love Injection's Barbie Bertisch and Paul Raffaele. Robert Cotter's "Missing You," released in 1976 on Tiger Lily, had all the ingredients of a hit album: a super talented singer and songwriter, a string of superb tracks including a couple of potential hit singles and a team of amazing musicians in the studio. However very few copies of 'Missing You' survive to this day. Not that the album didn't sell well at the time, it just didn't sell at all. No records could be found in stores and for a good reason. The label, Tiger Lily, an offshoot of Morris Levy's Roulette Records, was reputedly a tax-scam whose goal was to basically lose money. The label only operated for a couple of years and vanished without trace after releasing around sixty albums. ?Robert Cotter had been active since the late 60s, first in Long Island where he grew up singing in Church and with his high school band, then in New York where he got hired to play in the roadshow of the 1970 Broadway hit 'Jesus Christ Superstar'. When this came to an end, Robert returned to New York where he got introduced to two young aspiring musicians, Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edward. They needed a singer to front their new group, The Big Apple Band, who also included Robert Sabino on keys and Tony Thompson on Drums. Robert joined and the group played for a few years making a name for themselves in the New York area. ?In the process Cotter wrote a few songs that he recorded with two different groups between 1975 and 76: The Big Apple Band on one side and also with musician friends from his previous group on the other side, giving the album its great versatility. ?The album features a wide array of styles, from the funk of the title track and 'Disco Blues' to the soulful acoustic feel of 'Three Wise Men' and the conga-led mid-tempo groove of 'God Bless The Soulfire People'. The tracks showcase Cotter's amazing range as a singer and also as a composer. The two Big Apple Band tracks, 'Love Rite' and 'Saturday' are not only great, but also give an insight into the origin of the Chic sound. These songs are historically invaluable as the group’s only recordings just before it morphed into Chic (A remake of 'Saturday' would actually become a hit for Norma Jean Wright two years later produced by Rodgers/Edwards). The album finishes with the incredible "Come On With It," a politically-charged diatribe against Nixon featuring a darker psychedelic edge. When the album was pressed, Cotter got a few copies and never really heard back from the label. He moved on with his career - performing and recording for various other labels - and never really looked back on his debut album. ?Greater than the sum of its parts, "Missing You" is a unique album and a bonified classic that finally gets the release it deserves forty-five years on. Wewantsounds is delighted to reissue the album in its original glory for everyone to appreciate.

The Limited Edition Vinyl Pressing Is Accompanied By A Fold Out Poster Containing Russian And English Lyrics Designed By Dima Pantyushin. Peshekhod, The Debut Album From Dima Pantyushin And Sasha Lipsky, Oscillates Through An Immaculate Synth-Pop Ecosystem In Which Every Shift Feels Both Accurate In Its Absurdity And Divinely Danceable. The Album ("Peshekhod" Translates To "Pedestrian") Investigates The Inner Narrative Of A Muscovite As He Wanders Through The City, Recalls His Work, And Contemplates His Existence. It's Roughly Autobiographical In Scope- Pantyushin Was Born And Raised In Moscow, Co-Runs Cafe Enthusiast In The City Center, And Is A Visual Artist By Trade-Yet Explores Feelings Universal. His Lyrics Conjure The Nostalgia And Joy Of Parenthood In "Ray Of Sunshine," The Paranoia Of Metropolitan Life On "Pigeon," And The Slippage Of Time On "Chess."Fellow Moscow Native And Longtime Friend, Sasha Lipsky, Who Writes And Performs With His Brother In Simple Symmetry, Joins Pantyushin On Production. Lipsky Weaves Entire Sonic Ecosystems For Dima's Instinctual Observations And Adroit Lyrics. The Result Is A Musical Landscape That Bounces Between The Terrestrial And The Divine As Pantyushin's Croon And Lipsky's Synth-Heavy Compositions Swell With Aliveness.Pantyushin And Lipsky Graft Genres To Their Electronic Framework Throughout Peshekhod. "Nature" Summons 1950's Pastiche Complete With Upbeat Mellotron, While "Time" And "House (With An Attic)" Go From Ethereal Ambient To Subterranean Techno And Back Again. But Every Oscillation And Shift Feels Part Of The Same System. Pantyushin Never Strays Too Far From His Pedestrian Protagonist. He Knows The Best Stories Are The Ones In Which We Can See Ourselves, While Lipsky Dresses Each Observation With Earworms You'll Struggle To Shake, Even If You Don't Speak The Language. Peshekhod Is A Picaresque In Miniature. A Record That Considers The Stations Of The Day In Deft Detail, For All To Tap Into.Peshekhod Features Album Art Designed By Pantyushin...

Dancer and B3 Hammond player Leon Gardner moved from his Texas to Los Angeles sometime in the mid '60s. Soon after arriving he set up his own Igloo records.

While in LA, Gardner befriended arranger and pianist Arthur Monday, Monday had settled in LA with his friend and co-musician Gabe Fleming, and they shared arranging credits for a few of the igloo releases. Fleming was credited for 'Farm Song' while Monday was credited for 'Honest Song' on the flip. 'Igloo Records' ie Leon Gardner was credited as producer. In reality, it's likely that the three of them worked together on both sides of the record and others on the label. Leon also arranged and produced other bands on the label such as the deep soul classic by the Jhamels 'I've Cried' and Wallace Petty Combo's Petty Cash but never reached the success he had hoped for.

A Decade later and Gardner became frustrated by his lack of recognition, and became increasingly more reclusive, which in turn led to a rift between him and his family. Drummer Edward 'Apple' Nelson (see Tracks 2 and 12), remembers his first impressions of Leon, "I met Leon a few times here and there as him and Monday were real tight. I didn't get to know him that well or nothing as he could came across as very much into his own thing". Leon's son Darrell recalls his father's music, saying "I always knew his music was special even back then and am truly surprised that he never really got any recognition for it until now". Looking back, LA bandleader Charles Wright concurs, "We didn't think of him as being very significant but I guess he was. He did come out with some good lyrics".

As well as his other 45s released on Igloo, there were other recordings made for several other independent labels between 1965 and 1974, after which Gardner seemed to disappear under the radar.. The general consensus is that he is currently was no fixed address and living somewhere in the Hollywood district of Los Angeles, yet all attempts to contact at this point were unsuccessful.

This Leon Gardner / Igloo records LP was originally a project Gerald Short of Jazzman Records. Gerald worked on this over 10 years ago and spoke to many involved with the label who are no longer with us. He finally managed to track Leon down to a care home in LA but unfortunately, Leon passed away soon after Gerald reached out to him. Gerald decided not to continue with the LP out of respect, the information and text here is kindly supplied by Gerald so thanks to him for that.

Magical is a fusion of a dozen genres, where every song opens up like a Russian doll, splitting into real songs within the song. Hundreds of details are part of the different sonic worlds in which each song progresses. Magical is no doubt hard to decipher for very good musicians, but it’s easy to dance to for very normal people. Since the orchestral introduction of the first song your senses will be automatically taken on a journey between irony and sadness, emotional intensity and vibing, extreme nerding and introspection. Magical is a dream that, through sound illusion, makes you meditate on the meaning of life, death and love, three fundamental topics in the album lyrics. The album is a leap into a future where no tradition is missing. Just a perfect way to discover the surprising world of Ze in the Clouds.

Favorite Recordings and Charles Maurice proudly present the 5th edition of the AOR Global Sounds compilations series: 8 rare and hidden tracks, produced between 1977 and 1984 in various parts of the world. Started in 2015, the AOR Global Sounds series was born from the will of Charles Maurice (aka Pascal Rioux) to share his longtime love for the AOR and WestCoast movement and highlight its influence for many artists in the late 70s and early 80s. In this 5th volume, he selected again highly forgotten productions, deeply infused with Disco and Soul flavors. Half of the compilation’s tracklist is naturally coming from the US, homeland of this music style, while the other half is made of productions from all over the globe, from France or United Kingdom to Venezuela. And for most of these beautiful songs, it came from artists and bands rather unknown and often released as private press. Often, these records will have a special story, sometimes they’re just part of the universal quest of finding true love. Nonetheless, they all carry a wide range of emotions magnified by the music. For example, “Don’t Take It Away” by Westside is as a love song about a new relationship, recorded in Minnesota and mastered on Sunset Bld. (Hollywood) by Bernie Grundman, who worked on Thriller – funny thing, the original LP is a picture-disc, which was still quite rare back in the days because the singer saw one from Mickael Jackson when visiting the studio. “Til’ Mornin’ Comes”, the only release by The Ferry Brothers, is also a love song, recorded in NYC with notably Gwen Guthrie, Vivian Cherry & Patti Austin singing as backup vocalists. On “What Its Meant To Me”, Jonathon Hansen remembers with emotion the good times spent with the members of his band including the vocalist he was in love with. On “J’Irai Squatter Ton Cœur”, Didier Makaga better-known as a French Boogie & Pop singer, arranger & composer, sings a charming declaration of love on a heavy and groovy eighties production. “You Never Know” by Rhapsody, recorded in Connecticut, sounds more like an East coast fusion of Soul and Jazz-Funk à la James Mason. “What You Do To Me” by Sugar Cane was highlighted on a Pittsburgh Rock Radio compilation: listening to this smooth ballad with its amazing Moog synth break will lift your soul. “Kailua” by Venezuelan Jazz-Funk band Esperanto, is a song about Hawaii which evocates bucolic dreamy nights facing the ocean, a typical AOR vibe. Finally, “I Need You” from Mark Williamson is a blue-eyed soul UK groover ending on a fouron-the-floor climax! And we could detail stories but our guessing is the best way to learn more about all these gems is to listen to the compilation, fully remastered from originals, and whether your preference is for vinyl or CD formats.

Wah Wah 45s make a welcome return to the world of re-issues. Having started out over two decades ago releasing dance floor funk from Benny Poole, Cheyenne Fowler and The Googie Rene Combo, and later re-releasing obscure Kompa-funk from Haitian pianist Henri Pierre Noel, they now turn their attention to an overlooked early 90s acoustic soul gem.
About thirty years ago, music teacher and budding producer Alex Boyesen found himself working as part of the Haringey Music Workshop - a community programme and outreach project funded by the local council in Haringey, North London (coincidentally the area in which the Wah Wah head office is now based!).
"Anyone could come and get lessons for free - ranging from piano, sax, guitar, drums, bass, singing and workshops including choral, jazz band and more." Alex Boyesen
It was during that time that Alex came across a young Sam Edwards.
"One day I went into one of the rehearsal rooms and there, by herself, was this girl playing a piano and singing. It was the most incredible voice I had ever heard."
Before long, the pair were playing all over London as a duo with Alex on guitar and Sam on vocals.
"Sam had never had professional training, she was simply an utter natural."
The Haringey Music workshop was connected with other projects in the borough, in particular a community project called the Selby Centre. Here they ran training programs for young people and one of these was a music business course. The idea was that they found an artist, recorded them and then promoted them. One way or the other they ended up picking Alex and Sam to be on their roster.
"My good friend Nixon Rosembert was brought in to oversee the recordings and they hired the Islington Music Workshop to do the recording. We got musicians from the Haringey Music Workshop to play on the sessions and spent a day recording two songs -American CarsandLife. The training workshop had created a label called Progression Music and out the record went."
Three decades later and out of the blue Alex started to get interest again in the record he'd almost forgotten about all those years ago. It had become something of a sought after gem on Discogs, and there seemed to be an interest in that 'acoustic soul' sound once again.
"I got three people asking if they could re-release it and finally here we are with Wah Wah 45s doing the business after all these years."
It was Hospital Records and Wah Wah 45s founder, Chris Goss, who first brought the idea of releasing this record to the table.
"This is a really special record for me, picked up 30 years ago, from a young James Lavelle at Honest Jon's in Ladbroke Grove. Sam Edwards would go on to perform and write songs with North London's Izit, the acid jazz collective fronted by Tony Colman - with whom I have built a music company, these past 25 years. Alex Boyeson worked with Tony at the Haringey Arts Project, who produced a one-off vinyl release of Alex's two compositions back in 1991. Thanks to Alex and Tony, we have been able to clean-up the original audio, uncover photos and lyric sheets to present, with real love and affection, these two lost gems from a bygone era." Chris Goss, Feb 2021.
The project was then expanded by Dom Servini, who got heavy disco legend Ashley Beedle and co-label owner and erstwhile producer Adam Scrimshire in to take on remix duties.
"When approached by Dom Servini to reworkAmerican CarsI had no idea about the history of the original song. After a good listen myself and studio partner Darren Morris set to work and all I can say that it was a lovely experience keeping the vibe of the original but giving it a spaced out feel in true Afrikanz On Marz fashion." Ashley Beedle, Feb 2021.
"Remixing without multi-tracks always brings a bunch of challenges, getting the balance between the bass and drums in the original and what you want to do with your own version. The song really dictates certain things to you.
But it was such a pleasure to explore that with this beautiful song and vocal performance. So many ways to approach it. I just wanted to draw out more of the melancholy in the original and make it an absorbing experience." Adam Scrimshire, Feb 2021.
Perhaps the last word should be given to Alex himself, who's very much enjoying the new lease of life that his music with Sam is getting.
"As I write this we are trying to locate her, she's somewhere singing something, that's all she ever did. Thanks for being part of my life Sam and I am so glad that this small bit of that time is being remembered." Alex Boyesen, Feb 2021.

Any DJ set tells you, unconsciously or not, about its author.

Through the record choices and the way they are organized, one can feel the DJ’s state of mind and find out a bit more about the musical deposit discovered that is being shared and dug through by him or her at the moment.

The appetite for diggin’, the quest for a novelty or a forgotten rarity is what makes a DJ set a true organic living matter constantly fueled although not always, unfortunately, respected.

Time stretching. Too many DJ’s made a pact with this diabolical creature. A true digital steamroller that runs over the rhythm to fix the tempo while leaving behind an agonizing drummer whose sole crime was to have been carried away by his energy and having moved forward the BPM. At the end, everything that gave charm and life to the track, its imperfections and the peculiar fact that it makes you dance faster towards its end… all these along with all the lively movements contained within the track are reduced to nothing.

My conception of music and DJ sets is the exact opposite. Since the first volume of Straight From The Decks, my DJ sets have been redesigned, refreshed and improved. However, there was no preexisting plan, they evolved naturally following my new desires. The famous core of my indispensable musical choices started to morph little by little into something different without losing sight of its center of gravity which remains undoubtedly afro-tropical.

No matter which track, its style and its origin, the quality of the music that is brought to my ears is always my sole and primary concern.

In this selection, you’ll find 7” vinyl records available to everyone sitting proudly next to some rarities found online and acquired through nerve-raking auctions battles. There are indeed exclusive remixes along with titles that until now were only available in their digital formats. Now for the first time they are available here in vinyl format. Obviously, if you have chosen the CD format, that precision doesn’t really matter… Sixteen titles which have become the heart of my sets throughout this past year. A heart which in a year will beat to a certainly different drum…

Over The Past Several Years, The Recorded Output Of Carl Stone Has Been Turned On Its Head. In Previous Decades, Stone Perennially Toured New Work But Kept A Harboring Gulf Of Time Between The Live Performances And Their Recorded Release. This Not Only Reflected The Careful Consideration Of The Pieces And Technical Innovations That Went Into The Music But Also The Largely Academic-Minded Audience That Was Themselves Invested In The History And Context Of The Work. The Time Span Of Stone's Recorded Output In Both Sheer Musical Duration And Year Range Was Generously Expansive. Following Multiple Historical Overviews Of Stone's Work On Unseen Worlds And A Re-Connection With A Wider Audience, The Time Between Stone's New Work In Concert And On Record Has Grown Shorter And Shorter Until There Is Now Almost No Distance At All. Stone's Work Has Often At Its Core Explored New Potential Within Popular Cultural Musics, Simultaneously Unspooling And Satisfying A Pop Craving. On Stol En Car, The Forms Of Carl Stone's Pieces Have Also Become More Compact, Making For A Progressive New Stage In Stone's Career Where He Is Not Only Creating Out Of Pop Forms But Challenging Them.Stolen Car Is The Gleeful, Heart Racing Sound Of Hijack, Hotwire, And Escape. Big Crown Records is proud to present Dear Sunny... a compilation of Sunny & The Sunliners covers by Big Crown artists. Since the first time we heard "Should I Take You Home" by Sunny & The Sunliners, we have been avid fans. That record, which we were introduced to on MF Classy Chris' now legendary mixtape, The Time Is Right, set a lot of things in motion. It started of course with tracking down copies and collecting all of Sunny's records for our personal collections. That quickly turned into the desire to reissue some of his vast catalog on our label for the rest of the world to hear. We got in touch with Sunny and his son David and brought the idea to them. It took a lot of phone calls, a visit to their home in San Antonio, and three more years of calls and emails to convince them that our New York record label was a good place for them to entrust their music. After getting to know each other well enough Dave said, "You have been calling us non-stop for more than three years, you Must mean what you are saying" and with that, we signed a deal to do a reissue project on Big Crown. We then flew out to San Antonio again, this time with a scanner and a videographer. We sat down with Sunny to interview him, went through his vast collection of photos, and talked about his life and career. Sunny was even kind enough to let us film him performing acoustic versions of a few songs. We used all of that material for our 2017 compilation, Mr Brown Eyed Soul. That release is our highlight reel of Sunny's Soul tunes. Looking back at the response to that compilation, it is safe to say that we achieved our goal of connecting a whole new audience to Sunny's incredible music. We also made his rarest records readily available to collectors at a price that wouldn't empty their pockets. The concept for Dear SunnyâÇÝ came to us right after we signed the deal. We wanted our artists to cover his music as a tribute to him. Three years later we released the digital album on Sept 4th to coincide with Sunny's 77th birthday. The response has been nothing but love and now we are ready to press this up on vinyl with the addition of Liam Bailey's scorching cover of "Give Me Time". Everyone here stepped up to fill very big shoes doing these covers. Bobby Oroza teamed up with Cold Diamond & Mink and made a smashing version of "Should I Take You Home". The Shacks took on the anthemic "Smile Now, Cry Later" while Holy Hive covers "If I Could See You Now" building off the uptempo dance floor energy of the original. Paul & The Tall Trees bring a crooning vibe to "Rain Makes Me Blue" and Brainstory turned "Runaway" into a haunting ballad reminiscent of early Lee Hazelwood productions. Some of these turn out to be covers of covers. Bacao Rhythm & Steel B and takes on the funk collector's holy grail from Sunny, his cover of War's "Get Down" while 79.5 take Sunny's version of "My Dream" and change the vibe from a floating love song to theme music for the brokenhearted. Mr. Lee Fields does "The One Who's Hurting Is You" and the latest addition to the Big Crown Roster, Lizette and Quevin, do a rendition of the song that brought Sunny to Dick Clark's American Bandstand in 1963 and catapulted him to fame; his cover of Little Willie John's "Talk To Me". So as the letter begins, "Dear Sunny.." we hope that you enjoy this homage Sir. Thank you for all the music you have given all of us, it has been a pleasure to work with you and to get a chance to know you and your family. We will keep calling Dave every other week trying to get you in the studio with Leon to record some new material until it happens or you flat out tell us no...but all jokes aside, thank you Sunny. This was all really a dream come true for us. We hope everyone enjoys this homage to t he living legend, San Antonio's finest, Mr. Brown Eyed Soul, Sunny Ozuna as much as we do.

It's 1992. You're seven to twelve years old. What are you doing? You're probably biking home from Blockbuster with a Sonic the Hedgehog 2 cartridge. You've waited weeks to get your paws on it, but since it's still a "new release," it's only a three day rental. No matter - you've already stocked a whole weekend's worth of Surge and Fun Dip. You fire up your Genesis. Your television screen erupts with a blinding flash of white light, as The Blue One tears across the screen leaving the letters S - E - G - A emblazoned in his path. You're in a tizzy. Your thumbs begin to twitch in anticipation. Level two, Chemical Plant Zone, is uncharted territory. Your palms start to get sweat as you see toxic sludge fill the screen. The Surge and the Fun Dip hit you at the same time. Rings, spin dashes, Chaos Emeralds...everything blurs into a kaleidoscope of colors and shapes and sounds and... You snap out of it. It's not the nineties. It's 2021 and you're in your 30s. Drats. The good news is the new "Chemical Plant Zone" 45 by Minneapolis rascals Black Market Brass. A 12-piece psych-afrobeat band covering music from the Sonic 2 soundtrack? Pshaw!

Here's a funky introduction to the two man band Duoya from Sweden. Butter is their debut release, a three tracks EP containing two songs from the upcoming album and one exclusive. As they are perfecting their debut full length album we thought to introduce the project to you with this super limited 7" vinyl to mark the day.

Duoya is the funky brainchild of Gustav Horneij and Dimitrios Karatzios. The two met through a shared obsession with jazz vinyls and later started jamming, eventually forming Organic Pulse Ensemble together. While the project in time would turn into Gustav's one man venture, their creative chemistry was still there when they decided to start sending recordings and song sketches back and forth during the spring of 2020. Which in turn was the beginning of a new musical journey.

Harboring the creativity of both artists, Dimitri being an illustrator as well as a musician and Gustav being a multi-instrumentalist and a song writer. When they get together only good things happen. Specially while jamming, they express themselves freely and come up with crazy groovy music that everyone loves to vibe on.

In expectation for the amazing upcoming album that is in the works, Butter turned out to be the perfect appetizer to get in the mood and discover this brand new project with the complicity of Urban Waves Records.

Since first emerging in the latter half of the noughties, Guillaume Metenier’s Soul Sugar project has evolved considerably. Initially a trio built around the virtuoso organist’s love of ‘60s and ‘70s soul-jazz and Hammond funk – Metenier studied under jazz organ legend Dr Lonnie Smith – Soul Sugar is now a collaborative collective that draws just as much influence from classic Jamaican dub and reggae as the works of Jimmy Smith and Jimmy McGriff. The outfit’s musical evolution comes into sharp focus on Excursions in Soul, Reggae, Funk & Dub, a collection of hard-to-find tracks that have been released at different points, and on different vinyl formats, over the last three years. Taken as a whole, the set offers a stunning snapshot of Soul Sugar’s rapidly expanding catalogue of classics. Metenier is once again at the controls but this time round Soul Sugar’s cast list of contributing musicians includes Sly & Robbie, Blundetto, Lone Ark, Slikk Tim, Thomas Naim and honeyvoiced soul singer Leo Carmichael. Metenier also stars as a musician, providing lively and ear-catching organ solos under his now familiar Booker Gee alias. What’s most noticeable from the off is the richness of the reggae riddims, the warmness of the instrumentation and the effortlessly soulful nature of the music. This is particularly evident on the collective’s stunning covers of Luther Vandross’s "Never Too Much" and Marvin Gaye’s "I Want You": effortlessly sunny and life-affirming interpretations that re-imagine the tracks as sumptuous slabs of reggae-soul and provide a platform for Leo Carmichael’s inspiring and comforting voice. Metenier and friends’ take on dub reggae – toasty, authentically bass-heavy and seeped in analogue effects – can also be admired on "Matumbee" and "Cool Down", the latter a digi-dub influenced affair rich in colourful synths sounds, echoing delay trails and sub bass so deep it will rattle your teeth. Both also contain lusciously jazzy guitar licks and some incredible keyswork from Metenier. The guiding hand of Spanish multi-instrumentalist and producer Lone Ark can be heard on album opener "Aximites" – think Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry producing Jimmy Smith – and "Faith", an expertly breezy concoction that sports Jackie Mittoo-esque Hammond B3 solos from Metenier over a luscious backing track that sounds like something that may have emerged from Studio One in the mid 1970s. The collective’s love of Studio One is explored further on a sweaty, reggae-funk cover of "Greedy" that features fabulous drums, bass and guitar from Slikk Tim, while "Out In The Rain" is an authentically sparse, spaced-out dub number laden with fluid instrument solos and devilishly heavy riddim. Part compilation, part artist album, part collaborative celebration of dub-soul fusion, Excursions in Soul, Reggae, Funk & Dub is the strongest statement yet of who Soul Sugar are, and where they’re going.

Recorded during the thick of the Covid lockdown, Kevin, Tony, & Eric hunkered down in their studio and turned their energy inward. With all live shows and future tours canceled, Brainstory had no other outlet besides their rehearsal space which had been converted into a makeshift studio. Stepping up to the obstacles of the moment, they recorded and produced an EP of brand new music. They were already highly skilled musicians two years ago, but time in the studio with Leon Michels producing Buck and playing alongside bands like Holy Hive and Chicano Batman had a profound effect on them. Their ears have developed, their ethos and their drive has matured, their musicianship is full-blown; hence the name of the EP, Ripe. Ripe is a seven song journey into who Brainstory are as people and as a band. They are lighthearted and fun but never anything less than dead serious about their artistry. In choosing to record a mostly instrumental record, they have departed from their 2019 debut Buck and are showing more of their Jazz roots. Ripe pulls from Jazz, Hip Hop, 70s Funk, 60s Soul, and life in Southern California in the year 2021. Kev's intro to the EP is a testament to their thing, his goofy and charming "let's go baby_.less go baby" is welcoming and fun and then "Scissors" drops - serious as can be. The first vocal number we hear is "Seasons", a song about maintaining through the challenges of 2020 that would make Roy Ayers proud. "Long Day" and "Rogers" are drenched in reefer and psychedelia and promise a moment away from reality if listened to in headphones. "Bye Bye" is another stone cold ballad from the group that is destined to be a staple in sweet soul sets around the globe. Ripe is a welcome ray of sunshine as we all shake off the darkness of 2020 and will hold fans over while they finish recording their full length sophomore album due out in 2022.

Time to bust out those shades as we have two brand new blasts of sonic sunshine from Bristol beatmakers, The Allergies. 'Move On Baby' finds the duo on career-best form. With their sampling savvy hitting new heights, as vintage rhythm 'n' blues vocals ride highly re-energised Latin loops, and some seriously funky drums. Totally their signature sound – Tough beats, catchy hooks and horns, and feel-good dancefloor vibes – But turned up to 11. It's got "Sound of the Summer" written all over it, weather permitting. Also shining bright is B-side banger, 'Are You Ready'. This stomping soul sensation features LA rap legend, Andy Cooper [Ugly Duckling] and the powerful pipes of Miss Marietta Smith. The peak-time powder keg is set to detonate on this one. And the call-to-arms manifesto gives you the full Allergies' band stage show experience in one beefed up jukebox single.

Lloyd Altamont Thomas Robinson recorded many songs as a singer first for Studio One in 1963 and later for many labels and Jamaican producers including Duke Reid, Lloyd Daley, Sir JJ and more. Robinson was part of the duo Lloyd and Devon, whom had quite a few good songs under their belt including a hit for Derrick Morgan's Hop label, "Red Bum Ball.". With Glen Brown, under the name Lloyd & Glen, he wrote and recorded many outstanding Rocksteady & early Reggae tracks, some quite heavily influenced by black Soul including the two sublime tracks featured here. He went on to record the big dancehall hit “Cuss Cuss” in 1984 on the Harry J. label. He died in 2013 in the Kingston Public Hospital. He was 68 years old. Glenmore Lloyd Brown, began his career as a vocalist in Sonny Bradshaw’s jazz group before recording duets with Hopeton Lewis, Dave Barker, and Lloyd Robinson. Later, Brown became the founder and owner of the Reggae/Dub labels Pantomine and South East Music. A sought after producer he worked with many with many Reggae greats including U Roy, Gregory Isaacs, Big Youth, I-Roy, Prince Jazzbo, Johnny Clarke, Lloyd Parks, and Little Roy. The heavy rhythms of his Dub productions resulted in his being known as "The rhythm master". He died at the Far Rockaway Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in New York City on 4 October 2019, at the age of 75. As “Lloyd & Glen”, they composed, sang and recorded together about 15 tracks, ranging from Ska to Rocksteady to Soul on a variety of labels between 1966 and 1968. Most of these songs are outstanding, many are just sublime with a strong American Soul influence. In the late 50s & 60s, Jamaica was Rhythm & Blues/Soul crazy. Many Jamaican artists regularly performed and recorded tracks in these styles along with Rocksteady and Reggay. Very few though could do it as well Lloyd & Glen...

Finnish Producer Sasu Ripatti Has Been Torching The Fringes Of Electronic Music Since The Mid 1990s, A Process That's Found Him Melting A Wide Spectrum Of Musical Innovation Into His Cult Brand Of Experimental Minimalism. From The Skeletal Jazz Deconstructions Of His 1997 Vladislav Delay Debut "The Kind Of Blue Ep" To The Blurred Dub Techno Variations Of 2000's "Multila" And 2012's "Kuopio", Ripatti Has Betrayed A Restless, Voracious Passion For Sound. "Fun Is Not A Straight Line" Builds On This Impressive Legacy, Retaining His Sonic Signature And Adding A Playfulness That Harks Back To His Beloved Deep House Smash, Luomo's "Vocalcity". After Becoming Frustrated By The Inflexibility Of The 4/4 House Idiom, Ripatti Found Solace In Rap And Bass Music's Rhythmic Complexity And Anarchic Structures. "I Bought Nas's 'Illmatic' When It Came Out In '94 And Have More Or Less Been Listening To Rap Since," He Explains. "I'm Not Really Sure Why Now, But That Rap Influence Wanted To Come Through." Chopped Rap Vocals, Booming Subs And Gritty, Neck-Snapping Beats Are The Primary Colors Of "Fun Is Not A Straight Line", Painted Into The Foreground And Blended Into An Immediately Recognizable Rhythmic Palette. The Tracks Cross Into The Same Continuum As Chicago Footwork, With Stuttering Samples That Build Thick Walls Of Bass And Flurries Of Wordless Rhymes Amid A Narcotic Haze Of Beats. On 'Monolith', Ripatti's Love Of New York Rap Is In Full Focus As He Obscures Chipmunked Vocals With Tight, Crackling Percussion That Disintegrates Into Rolling Kicks; 'Speedmemories' Is Even More Upfront, Channeling The Raw Sunshine Energy Of So So Def Electro Into Rhythms That Are Powerfully Skeletal. Elsewhere, Syrupy Southern-Fried Tr-808 Bass Womps Are Tangled With Molasses-Slow Vocals On 'Videophonekitty', Fuzzed Into Textured, Dissociated Ambience.Since The Beginning, Ripatti Has Tried To Find A Balance Between His Experimental Urges And Drive To Create More Universal Music. As His More Recent Albums Have Traveled Into Darker...

Everybody with a deep knowledge in R&B is confident with the essence of live P-Funk: the costumes, the stagecraft, the dozen-plus musicians. Alongside Sun Ra Arkestra this was pure afro-futurism, longtime before it was of our current language. The so called coming of the Mothership took place in this 1977 live, during the life changing P.Funk Earth Tour. Anyone who’s seen footage of the band at their prime can’t overstate the greatness of their spectacle.

7" of this funk classic re-issued for the first time from recently discovered Master Tapes.

Funky Soul (originally titled "Going To See The Man") was a routine crowd pleaser during live shows that even had its own dance "rock the ship." This was the part two of the song. It was part one that was created in the studio as a riff off of part two. The raw energy of this song when performed live created hysteria and drove spectators into a frenzy. It didn't take long for word to get around and catch the attention of the famous Wyld DJ Larry McKinley. McKinley wanted to capture this magic onto record and helped arrange the session at Cosimo Matassa's studio. He drove Isaac Hayes down from Memphis to New Orleans in 1968 and organized Issac Hayes to arrange the horn section on this record while he was working with the Okeh label and developing an emerging artist named Margie Joseph. It was during this time that Margie recorded two singles Why Does A Man Have To Lie/See (Okeh, 4-7304) and Show Me/A Matter Of Life Or Death (Okeh, 4-7313).

David Batiste & The Gladiators were a band David Batiste and several of his brothers formed while they were in High School in New Orleans back in 1961. The band won a talent show in 1965 at Harlem's famous Apollo Theater and are the pioneers of what is now known as "Funk." David Batiste & The Gladiators were legendary mainstays of every bar in New Orleans that every band was hustling trying to get booked at.

It's no wonder that this song was famously complied on BBE Records and Ubiquity in the 1990's, rediscovered and performed by Miles Tackett & The Breakestra in the early 2000's. Those compilations contained audio sourced only from the vinyl record originally pressed up twice in the early 1970s and sought after by collectors and DJs for years and years. This version is from a direct master tape transfer from recently discovered Nola tapes. But wait… The party's just started. An entire album's worth of 1960s previously unreleased David Batiste & The Gladiators material from recently discovered master tapes is in the works and forthcoming on Family Groove Records.

Originally released on Greenback Records, a label from New Jersey consisting of George Greene & Gary D. Jackson, two producers who scouted local talent to record at George's home studio and independently distribute. The duo had a string of releases before Jackson relocated to Goldsboro, NC in the late 70s to establish a string of non-musical related business', when he met recent high school graduate, Karen Scott. Jackson enabled the potential of Scott's talent by searching for a group to write & record with. Satin Finish started out as a trio of Goldsboro musicians, Donald Oliver (keys), Joe Exum (drums) & Dennis Kornegay (bass) who came together for the recording project. Scott didn't write music so the group were tasked with coming up with an albums worth of material to take to the studio. Jackson had hired additional musicians for the session, three horn players & a guitarist, which would take place at Greene's home studio in Durham, NC. Three tracks were laid down for the purpose of a 7" single, the A side being Scott's calling card 'I Don't Want To Lose Your Love', written by Oliver, arranged by Kornegay & sang by Scott. Penned for the flip was 'I Didn't Know Funk Felt So Good', a song dropped due to being beyond 6 minutes in length, which made way for 'Took A Chance On Love', a song written & sang by Kornegay. The single had local success, however shortly after the release of the single Scott went to college to pursue her education whilst the group engaged new members and continued for another couple of years before disbanding. Another slice in time that we're proud to present to you. Shout out Kool Hersh for introducing us to Dennis & making this happen.

We are back with two Soul sides for you for our 11th regular release. Both are a perfect fit for the Soul scene. Side A features Maggtapp's previously unreleased "Because You're You." This is a strong female vox lead sublime Modern Soul groover. It features a steady beat and a spacious arrangement - just drums, bass, electric piano, and organ - that lets the vocals float on top of it. It definitely could be a demo or a temporary mix down, as it could be a bit more fleshed out, but it is really quite good as is. Joe McGlone & The Hot Pepper Band tear up Side B with another previously unreleased gem. "Love I Lost" is an anthemic cover of the Kenny Gamble/Leon Huff tune. It starts with an almost church like organ lifting you into a track that kicks wide open into a 70s Northern Soul floor filler. This is a classic strong Soul lead vocal with a harmony call and response chorus. Just try to keep from tapping your feet and then jumping out on the dancefloor.

Within any creative expression about love there's a shared experience, a sentiment hard to articulate but understood through emotion. One of the defining examples of a song that holds such sincerity is 'My Heart Is Broken' by 'The Four Dudes'.

Charles 'Pooky' Russell, the lead singer of 'The Four Dudes' shares his story of a broken heart; his ambition to pursue a life immersed in music is what led Charles to leave his hometown of San Antonio for Houston and in doing so, leaving his lady. Charles' music career began whilst studying at Sam Houston High during the mid-60s. During choir is where he met Reginald Whitaker & Lawrence Alexander, and the trio would go on to establish their first vocal harmony group, 'The Three Dudes'. The Dudes, inspired by groups such as The Cadillacs & The Platters, would gain a strong local following that led to their first single 'Sad Little Boy' & 'I'm Beggin' You' produced & released in 1967 on E.J. Henke's 'Satin' label.

By 1969, 'The Three Dudes' had become 'The Four Dudes' with the addition of Kenneth Ball. The Dudes had made the decision to pursue a full time career with their music and the opportunities available Houston propelled the move. Within the first year 'The Four Dudes' had found themselves a manager, James Davis, whom pieced the vocal group with Houston's own 'The Heavy Accents Band'. The group were gaining notoriety around town, performing several times a week, which led Davis to bring the outfit into the studio to release a single on his independent label, 'Sivad-J'. It was when Davis heard 'My Heart Is Broken' for the first time that they decided this would be the single, and within the same year would be recorded at SugarHill Studios & released as a 7" single.

The sincerity of the song is what serenaded Houston across the airwaves in 69', a staple for George 'Boogaloo' Frazier on his show for Kyok 1590 AM amongst many others. The single became a local hit however, due to the lack of distribution and small pressing, the single barely made it out the city limits. 'The Four Dudes' continued to perform in Houston for 3/4 more years before heading to Philadelphia and forming a group called 'Image'.

For the first time since its 1969 release, 'The Four Dudes' single is once again available through Symphonical Records as a limited 7" pressing. Licensed directly through the Davis family with the approval of Charles Russell.

Within Melbourne's burgeoning cinematic-soul scene, which includes breakout acts Surprise Chef and Karate Boogaloo, mysteriously sit The Pro-Teens. Helmed by prolific drummer and percussionist Hudson Whitlock, who also plays in both aforementioned bands, this breakaway studio project involves an interchangeable collective of incognito, Melbourne-based, esteemed instrumentalists playing under outlandish pseudonyms such as "'Dead Honest’ Dean Amazing" and "Libby Clique-Baite". Symbolically led by keyboardist "Snooch Dodd", new album ‘I Flip My Life Every Time I Fly’ is the latest musical concoction from Whitlock's eccentric brain, marrying the soul/funk roots of sample culture with the principles of boom-bap hip hop.

Incorporating the colourful comic book stylings of MF Doom and Kool Keith, or the dark and exotic flavours of Gravediggaz and The Wu-Tang Clan, The Pro-Teens also take cues from their composing heroes Galt MacDermot, Richard Evans and Marc Moulin. The Pro-Teens bop, zip, whip and fling on this phantasmagorical journey - an unorthodox patchwork of cinematic soul, hip hop-guided funk breaks, vivid instrumental textures and film score-esque moods.

The Pro-Teens work on the same analogue recording model adopted by the tight-knit College Of Knowledge label, self-recorded and produced with the rag-tag crew of musicians putting tracks down live to tape in crammed attic studios and sharehouse recording spaces. The first limited pressing of 'I Flip My Life Every Time I Fly' was released on the 'College Of Knowledge' imprint in late 2020. It was one of the highlights of the year at Mr Bongo HQ who loved the concept and felt this tripped out masterpiece from Melbourne needed to be heard well beyond those lucky enough to have bagged those limited first copies.

‘What We Call Life’ is Jordan Rakei’s most vulnerable and intimate album to date. Its lyrics concern the lessons that the New Zealand-born, Australia-raised, and London-based artist learned about himself during therapy, a journey that began two years ago when he started reading about the ‘positive psychology’ movement. These themes manifest on songs like lead single “Family”, which Rakei says is “the most personal” he’s ever been with his lyrics. “I wanted to hit my vulnerability barrier and be really honest. It’s about my parents’ divorce in my mid-teens but still having love for them no matter what,” he explains.

With so many artists being influenced by his style, it would be very easy for Jordan to stay in the same musical lane; but, as in life, he is determined to move his music forward. Such introspective subjects are a departure from Rakei’s last album, 2019’s ‘Origin’. Raising big questions about the way that technology and social media interferes with our sense of humanity, ‘Origin’ received praise from The Observer, Mixmag, Complex, and GQ, earned an unexpected shout-out from Elton John, led to a collaboration with rap legend Common, and saw Rakei give a show-stopping performance for NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series.

No stranger to collaboration, Rakei is closely associated with friends and collaborators like Loyle Carner (with whom he co-wrote, produced and performed on “Ottolenghi” and the Jorja Smith-featuring “Loose Ends”), Tom Misch and Alfa Mist. He has also joined Chic’s Nile Rodgers for a writing session and recorded with Terrace Martin, producer for Kendrick and Snoop Dogg, and Herbie Hancock. There’s also his tight relationship with the South London dance music scene orbiting Bradley Zero’s Rhythm Section clubnight and label, with Rakei adopting the alias Dan Kye, most recently to offer up an exclusive track for Bonobo’s ‘Fabric presents’ mix and to release his full-length, ‘Small Moments’ album in November 2020. He also recently covered Donald Byrd’s “Wind Parade” for the Blue Note Re:imagined compilation, and earlier this year showcased work from his creative community alongside some of his favourite tracks (including his own covers of Radiohead’s “Codex”, and Jeff Buckley’s “Lover, You Should've Come Over”) in his mix for the esteemed LateNightTales series. He continues to offer up production tutorials and behind-the-scenes insights into his creative process with his fan community on Patreon.

With previously sold-out US and Australian headline tours, as well as performances at iconic venues and festivals – including Glastonbury, Pitchfork Avant-Garde Block Party, Sxsw, Montreux Jazz Festival, two sold out nights at Ronnie Scott’s, and a DJ set at Fabric (under his Dan Kye alias) – Jordan played a triumphant sold-out stop at London’s Roundhouse in 2019. In April 2022 he will embark on his biggest UK and EU tour yet, ending with a massive headline show at London’s 5000-capacity O2 Academy Brixton.

On ‘What We Call Life’ Rakei dives deeper into his sound world, merging electronic with acoustic, and rugged grooves with ambient atmospheres, to create something richer, more detailed, and more textural than before. Rakei, already a practitioner of meditation and mindfulness, was curious about the potential of using therapy for further self-discovery. During the process, he began to learn more about his behaviour patterns and anxieties, and addressed his long-standing irrational phobia of birds – a fear often associated with the unpredictable and the unknown, and something explored in the album’s creative direction and visuals. “As we worked through it, it made me realise I would love to talk about the different lessons I learned from therapy in my music: about my early childhood, my relationship with my parents and siblings, becoming independent in London, being in a new marriage, understanding how my marriage compares to the relationship my parents had”, Rakei says.

Artwork was created by Canadian-born, Los Angeles-based visual artist Justin Tyler Close (who has worked previously with the likes of Laura Marling), who resonated with the themes on Rakei’s album. The image was created in a remote photo shoot, with Rakei sending images over the internet that were projected onto a sheet and photographed by Close. The melancholic images reflect the title of the record, a question that Rakei would sometimes ask himself during a period of his childhood in which he suffered a great deal of anxiety: Is this what we call life? Rather than accepting defeat, the title is today a commentary on the more happy, confident, and assured person and artist that Jordan Rakei is today.

Sault returns with a new album featuring Michael Ofo and Little Simz. NINE will be limited to a short press run of 16,000 units, never to be re-issued again!

Sault - Nine is the fifth studio album by the mysterious collective Sault, released in June 2021. Like their previous albums, Nine arrived with little prior notice or traditional promotion.
Nine continues Sault's tradition of blending genres like soul, R&B, funk, Afrobeat, and post-punk, but it has a darker, grittier, and more confrontational tone than its predecessors. The album delves deeply into themes of trauma, mental health, inner-city struggles, violence, and survival, with a particular focus on life in Black urban environments.

The sound of the album reflects this shift in tone, with raw, minimalist production that pairs heavy basslines and hypnotic rhythms with layered vocals, spoken word segments, and atmospheric soundscapes. The music feels urgent, intense, and emotionally charged, offering a stark contrast to the more celebratory tone of Untitled (Rise).

Key Themes: Nine paints vivid portraits of life in marginalized communities, particularly in cities like London, where systemic inequality, violence, and hardship are everyday realities for many. The album’s title, Nine, is believed to refer to Nine Elms, an area of London, although it could also symbolize the "nine lives" concept, reflecting the resilience and survival instincts of those in tough environments.

The album tackles a range of topics, including:

Trauma – Several tracks reflect on the lasting impact of violence, poverty, and systemic oppression on mental health.
Community – There’s a strong focus on community dynamics, exploring both the unity and tensions within these spaces.
Resilience and Survival – Like much of Sault’s work, Nine reflects the endurance and strength required to navigate difficult environments.
Key Tracks:

"London Gangs" – A hard-hitting track with a pulsating, tense rhythm, addressing gang culture, violence, and the survival mentality of growing up in tough urban environments.
"You from London" – Featuring British rapper Little Simz, this track offers a sharp, introspective look at identity and the contradictions of growing up in a city like London, where cultural pride and struggle are deeply intertwined.
"Fear" – This song explores the psychological impact of fear, particularly how it’s experienced by people living in environments shaped by violence and deprivation.
"Bitter Streets" – A slower, more reflective track that focuses on the emotional toll of life on the streets, with a hauntingly beautiful melody that contrasts with the bleakness of its subject matter.
"Alcohol" – A deeply personal track, this one touches on themes of addiction, self-destruction, and the attempts to cope with life’s hardships through substance abuse.
Spoken Word and Storytelling: Nine incorporates spoken word interludes that add to its storytelling dimension. These segments often feature reflections on life in inner-city London, painting vivid images of the struggles and dynamics in urban spaces. The storytelling aspect makes the album feel more documentary-like, giving it a raw and real-life feel.

Production and Collective Identity: As with all Sault projects, the production on Nine is minimalistic yet impactful, with tight, looped rhythms, bass-heavy grooves, and layered vocals. The collective continues to maintain their air of mystery, avoiding traditional credits and public appearances. Producer Inflo is believed to be a central figure behind the sound, with vocal contributions from Cleo Sol, Kid Sister, and others, although these aren’t always confirmed.

Nine was well-received by critics, who appreciated its raw honesty and the way it dealt with heavy topics. It was seen as a necessary exploration of trauma, violence, and mental health in marginalized communities, delivered with Sault's trademark blend of musical innovation and emotional depth.

In sum, Nine stands out as one of Sault’s most emotionally intense and thematically challenging albums, offering a stark but poignant look at survival, trauma, and community in urban environments.

Multi-disciplinary producer and singer J.Lamotta teams up with Japanese beat-scene-monger BudaMunk to present collaborative album “Searching Skies” via Jakarta Records. After the success of her recent releases J.Lamotta (165k monthly listeners on Spotify and more than 10M cumulative streams) is clearly becoming an international name. She keeps this prolific momentum alive with “Searching Skies”, the collaborative album with Tokyo-based producer-mastermind BudaMunk, marking Lamotta’s fourth, and BudaMunk’s first, album to be released with Jakarta Records.

The Longplayer perfectly merges J.Lamotta’s iconic R&B, jazzy-Neo-Soul aesthetics with BudaMunks laid-back, impeccably-imperfect lo-fi hip-hop productions. It’s a well-timed collaboration, as J.Lamotta sees her loyal fanbase growing in Japan, and will be a worthy follow up to her previous Jakarta releases while Tokyo-based heavyweight BudaMunk (40k monthly listeners on Spotify and more than 1.7M cumulative streams) has received cosigns from a number of artists within the hip-hop arena, including Mndsgn, Eloquent, Pink Siifu, Suff Daddy, Kiefer, Swarvy and Lefto, among a host of others. His output is prolific and consistent, including releases on Jazzy Sport and Dogear Records, as well as LA-juggernaut Fat Beats’ “Baker’s Dozen” series; and his notoriety within the Japanese beat-scene is only growing. As Bandcamp’s Max Bell writes of BudaMunk, “it takes years to perfect being this relaxed and this precise”.

The album’s 1st single, “Eyes To The Skies” is set to be released on September 24th alongside stunning visual accompaniments by Tokyo-based film, design and screen-print studio Damn Good Productions and multimedia artist 8mL. The laid-back production, full of warbly keys, pads and the angelic warmth of Lamotta’s voice lets the listener float along as if they’re in the skies themselves. It’s a perfect vibe for the onset of the chillier Autumn weather.

The album’s 2nd single, “Put It Aside” is set to be released on October 15th and will be accompanied by visuals once again provided by Damn Good Productions and 8mL. This second single takes blisteringly swinging percussive elements and melodies that warp into peculiar sounds that defy auditory recognition, yet tingle with familiarity. J.Lamotta’s voice is as sweet as dates, and is the perfect accompaniment to BudaMunk’s lo-fi headiness. The album’s focus track, “Stay”, will be released in conjunction with the album November 5th.

The album’s single-releases and videos will be promoted via the artist’s and the label’s social media channels and will also be featured by music-blog Stereofox entirely, while Tokyo-based label Jazzy Sport will distribute and promote the release throughout Japan.

The Room will be Ricky Reed’s first artist album since becoming a house-hold-name producer, and launching his own label with Nice Life Recording Company. The project features Leon Bridges, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Dirty Projectors, Terrace Martin, Duendita, Ayoni, Lido Pimienta, St. Panther & John-Robert and more. The Room is a title that came to him in the wake of the death of George Floyd and the galvanizing of the Black Lives Matter movement across America and the world. He wanted to create a communal place where it’s as necessary to cry as it is to rejuvenate; where it’s as vital to be angry as it is to find joy. The music is an invitation to share experiences, commiserate, rejuvenate, and offer hope. It is upbeat in places, meditative always, and has real soul to it. Ultimately, Reed feels fundamentally changed by quarantine, particularly with his process of creating. All the songs were written via text and voice memos. The Room feels like an offering to the world at a time when Reed was back in the process again. Back at a new start. “When this comes out, whether it is well or not, the only thing that matters is that I made it.”

Nitely’ is the debut album from Jonny Wildey; written recorded over three years at North London’s creative haven Total Refreshment Centre. Although ‘Nitely’ will be his first release under his own name, Wildey has been making electronic music under the name Alphabets Heaven for the last decade, releasing a string of acclaimed singles on Nightmares On Wax, Tru Thoughts, Soundway, and King Deluxe. Recording upstairs at Total Refreshment Centre proved an inspiration in itself for Wildey – he recorded at night, which happily meant that some of the most exciting music around was happening in the same building: “The TRC had gigs on at the time, so I’d go there, start working on something, then would see the Neue Grafik Ensemble, or some amazing jazz band, and go back upstairs and carry on working, which was a lot of fun.” Unsurprisingly, he soon attracted some like-minded collaborators – ‘Nitely’ features Danalogue (The Comet Is Coming, Soccer96), Emma Gatrill (This Is The Kit, Laura Marling), Marcus Hamblett (James Holden, Timber Timbre) and London based beat master Deft (Yip Wong). ‘Nitely’ represents a musical shift, with Wildey embracing more traditional songwriting and a drawing upon his wide range of musical tastes – Shuggie Otis, Yes, Arthur Lee’s Love, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, A Tribe Called Quest, John Frusciante, Milton Nascimento, Steve Miller. “I really just wanted to take a lot of influences from the 70s and 80s that I was maybe a bit embarrassed about earlier in life and try and apply that to everything I’ve been doing for the last 10 years. I’m not ashamed to write songs and put my vocals at the front, which is a huge step for me. The big connecting thing is that a lot of the music I like is fun – say, Shuggie Otis has a lot of what I like in dance music, in that it just feels so light – it will just make whatever you do feel a bit better, that’s the kind of music I wanted to make. Spanning 12 tracks, ‘Nitely’ is a record from the heart; it’s direct, warm and unequivocally honest. The sound palette of the record effortlessly meshes the crunch and warmth of 70’s funk & soul (Lonely, Violet, Your Dreams), the dreamy air of bedroom pop (Don’t Fall Asleep, Love is Out There) and sub heavy frequencies from beats/electronica (Roll, Too Much). The result is a modern day Pop / New Soul classic, an album that from start to finish is an endearing look into the mind of Wildey. It’s familiar-yet-new, nostalgic and straight forward, wearing its emotions very clearly on its sleeves.

“Things happen for a reason, man.” - Leo Nocentelli

At just fourteen, Leo Nocentelli was backing up Otis Redding. Soon after, he was playing on hits for Lee Dorsey, The Supremes, and The Temptations. As an original member of The Meters, Leo wrote instant classics “Cissy Strut” and “Hey Pocky A–Way,” but his greatest moment on record may be totally unknown, until now…

Recorded at Cosimo Matassa’s Jazz City Studio in New Orleans in the early ‘70s and then lost to the ages, Another Side is one of Leo Nocentelli’s most personal and definitive moments ever cut to tape. A mixture of funky folk and rootsy, raw emotion (think Bill Withers and James Taylor meeting Allen Toussaint at Link Wray’s Three Track Shack), this previously unheard album shines like the sun on a spring day on the New Orleans fairgrounds. Backing Nocentelli is an all-star line-up of New Orleans royalty, including Allen Toussaint (piano), James Black (drums), and both George Porter Jr. (bass) and Zigaboo Modeliste (drums) of The Meters. Deeply introspective, the album features nine original songs by Nocentelli, plus a soulful rendition of Elton John’s “Your Song.” Half a century later, these recordings sound just as fresh and engaging as the day they were recorded.

What makes Another Side even more extraordinary, however, is the fact that the album—which could have easily become a classic in the ‘70s singer-songwriter canon—sat untouched for decades; miraculously surviving the devastating blow of Hurricane Katrina, only to be found 2,000 miles away at a Southern California swap meet in 2018 by record collector Mike Nishita. The album’s incredible journey is documented in the liner notes by Sam Sweet (New York Times, Los Angeles Times), who spoke with Nocentelli and Nishita about the recording process and re-discovery of the tapes. Sweet’s full notes appear in the release’s accompanying booklet alongside hand-written lyrics by Leo Nocentelli. The first pressing of the vinyl edition will feature gold-foil treatment on cover and spine. Rounding out the package are original designs and layout by the multi GRAMMY®–winning designer Masaki Koike.

While Nocentelli was embedded in New Orleans’ R&B scene, he was also deeply inspired by the late 1960’s and early 1970’s rising singer-songwriters, and soon found himself exploring sounds that were miles away from his band’s hard-edged funk riffs. Whenever he had downtime from session work and shows, Nocentelli spent much of 1971 recording his newly-found, reflective, diaristic songs at Matassa’s Jazz City studio. Backed by longtime Meters bandmate George Porter Jr. on bass, Nocentelli crafted the lineups for his sessions to match the tone of the material. When he needed a pianist, he’d call Toussaint. For percussion on the slower songs, he used drummer Zigaboo Modeliste, but many of the tracks featured James Black—a frequent collaborator of Toussaint’s and a member of Ellis Marsalis’ jazz group, whom Nocentelli recalls as an “unbelievable” musician. The recording, which Nocentelli fondly refers to as his “country-and-western-album,” paints a picture of a young man yearning to find a sense of purpose. “I was going through some changes which were reflected in the songs that I wrote during that time,” he tells Sweet. Among them is the mid-tempo “Getting Nowhere,” in which he expresses a sense of frustration, as he watches others find success around him. Similarly, “Till I Get There” details a man who is struggling to persevere in his goals. In the soaring “Tell Me Why,” meanwhile, the singer contemplates the existence of God. Other songs center around fictional characters. “Pretty Mittie,” for instance, is sung from the perspective of a farmer who longs to give up his arduous life for the city. “You’ve Become a Habit” is about a man who falls for a sex worker named Fancy. “Riverfront” is based on stories that singer Aaron Neville shared, about his days working on the New Orleans waterfront. Nocentelli also chose to perform one cover: Elton John’s breakthrough hit, “Your Song.” The guitarist made the recently-released ballad his own—infusing it with a loping, head-nodding cadence, ever so tastefully “funkdafied” in true New Orleans fashion. By the time that the album was finished, The Meters were busier than ever. They had just signed a record deal with Warner Brothers and were now the official house band at Toussaint’s studio, Sea-Saint. There, they not only backed artists on Toussaint’s Sehorn label but had also become the go-to session musicians for every major artist that recorded in New Orleans. Rather than focus on a solo career, Nocentelli poured his energies into The Meters’ next album. Eventually, time moved on, as did Nocentelli, and he decided to store his unreleased solo album at Sea-Saint for safekeeping. In 2005, when Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, Sea-Saint was among its victims. While Toussaint (who passed away in 2015) had sold the hallowed studio in the mid-90s, hundreds of his archived recordings remained in the building. The new owner salvaged what he could from the flooded building, shipping everything to a storage facility in Southern California. Boxes of tapes sat there for more than a decade before moving to another unit, which foreclosed a year later. The contents were purchased in a blind auction and, days later, sold at a swap meet. The fact that record collector Mike Nishita just happened to be there was pure kismet. Nishita, a DJ and brother to “Money Mark” Nishita (of Beastie Boys fame), recognized the Sea-Saint label on the boxes and purchased all 673 master tapes at the swap meet. He inspected the contents with his friend Mario Caldato Jr., the longtime audio engineer for the Beastie Boys. In addition to masters from Irma Thomas, Dr. John, Lee Dorsey, and Toussaint, there was a quarter-inch reel with Nocentelli’s name on it. As Caldato and Nishita played it back, they knew they had something special. “There was nothing else like it,” writes Sweet. “An acoustic album by the greatest funk guitarist who ever lived. It was the tape Mike would play for people to show them how special the collection was. The best album in the vault was something nobody knew existed.” Eventually, Nishita and Nocentelli connected, “He was so grateful, so sincere,” recalls Nishita. “I just kept thinking about how this music needs to be heard...Especially when you look at all the things that had to fall into place for these tapes to survive and be discovered this way.” As Nocentelli simply puts it, “Things happen for a reason, man.” And now, Light in the Attic is thrilled to give this remarkable record the spotlight it so rightly deserves. 50 years later, all is not lost.

Soul singer Gloria Ann Taylor (gat) released only a small amount of music during her brief career. Although she never achieved the commercial success or stardom of many of her contemporaries at the time, she has now become a cult sensation. With a voice that emoted love, agony, and haunting spirituality, she became a pioneer of genre-bending sound that laid the groundwork for what would become disco, R&B, and modern soul music.

In 2015, Ubiquity’s Luv ‘n Haight label issued the “Love is a Hurtin’ Thing” album that made her otherwise highly scarce music widely available to a worldwide audience. In turn, a whole new generation discovered GAT, and her music surged, finding its way into DJ sets, along with garnering numerous exemplary reviews on sites such as Pitchfork and NPR. GAT, though happy with the success of the reissue of “Love is a Hurtin’ Thing” remained private and out of the spotlight and the music industry. In 2016, with some coaxing, GAT returned to the studio to record three new songs she had written. With only two instruments, her piano, and her voice, GAT gave over what would be her final contribution to the world of music. “Be Worthy,” “Rich or Poor,” and “Tough Suzanne” were born from that same love, heartache and spirituality that GAT had always tapped into as an artist, but now with the maturity of a life long-lived. GAT never made it back to the studio to hear the result of her vision; she passed away in 2018 without the backing band or vocals ever recorded. It took several more years and the genius of technology and engineering to bring GAT’s final tracks back to life. The “Be Worthy” 7-inch is a magnificent ending to the legacy of the soul singer that knew love is a thing we could never live without, even if it is a hurtin’ thing.

Lady Wray releases an instant classic two-sider with two certified bangers from her forthcoming album 'Piece Of Me'. Side A is the in your face, head nodding, "Through It All". A tune that rips out of the speaker from the first snare crack with Nicole's pitched up and infectious chorus. The tried and true chemistry of Lady Wray and producer Leon Michels is on full display here as they push the envelope of current R&B and Soul making a stark declaration of why they are out in front of the pack of any of their peers. Nicole sings a song about dedication through the ups and downs on a track that has so much energy it is sure to move crowds around the globe. Side B, "Under The Sun" is a feel good homage to the sun and summertime. Lady Wray encapsulates all things good and lovely about warm weather and where it puts our minds. The infectious good vibes of the tune will change your attitude and have you turning the volume knob up while the earworm choruses will stay on the tip of your tongue long after the song ends.

System Error We started with enthusiasm, because with enthusiasm and effort everything was possible. We were that young but well-prepared generation that was going to take the world by storm. And we work, and we work, and we work, because art, culture, creativity, do not know schedules. Meritocracy and talent were our gods. Just do it. But the years passed (passed), and the success, the stability, the recognition, they never finished (they just) arrived, we never finished arriving. On bad days, we blame ourselves: we're not good enough, we don't make good decisions, we don't try hard enough. On good days, lucidity reminds us that talent is good, but also contacts, money, time and having the privilege of making mistakes, and little by little, the illusion turns into disenchantment. And what remains of that enthusiasm coexists with frustration and precariousness, just as anger coexists with that hope that refuses to disappear. Lalo Malo is the product of that anger, but also of that hope. Lalo Malo strips naked and confronts us with his (our) failures: professional, personal, social, political, economic. Because we need to face those failures in order to move forward. And between modesty and identification, understanding and anger, Remedios Zafra, and Antonio Machado, and Marina Garcés, and César Rendueles, and Mark Fisher, and David Harvey and so many, many others resonate; the voices of those who have stopped to analyze their experience and context, and who tell us that we are missing the mark and that our failures are not only ours, they are failures of the system, of a system (of a city, of a country, of a capitalist, individualist, neoliberal model that makes us devour each other, that devours us and devours itself. Against all odds, here we are, standing. Shaking off failures over and over again. Using any tool at our disposal to keep moving forward. Lalo Malo is, therefore, a triumph. And a hope for change. (Carmina Gustrán, cultural agitator)

Lalo Malo is a sound survival manual composed and written by Lalo López, and produced by Jordi Picazos. All the songs have been sung and played on guitar by Lalo López. The music has been made by Jordi Picazos on guitars, mandolins and keyboards, Hector Moras on bass, Dani Martí on drums and Ernest Martínez on percussions. Manu Davobe has played “Cruel” on the piano, and Francesc Chaparro has played the waterphone on “Perros” and the two parts of “La Ciutat”. Joan Vigo has put the double bass on “Blues de la Miseria”. Yasmina Azlor and Claudia Steccato have performed the backing vocals. The album has been recorded at Nación Funk Estudios, Barcelona by Miguelito Superstar, who has also mixed it with Jordi Picazos.

The Fabulous Counts were originally a teenage instrumental group of five musicians, Mose Davis (Organ and Piano), Demetrius ‘Demo’ Gates (Alto Saxophone and vocals), Jim White (Tenor Sax), Andrew T. Gibson (Drums) and Raoul Keith Mangrum (Percussion and Flute) who were later joined by the older, more experience Leroy Emanuel (Guitar and vocals). Emmanuel was invited into the group as it’s band leader by the groups manager Fred McClure, a former Detroit boxing champion who also happened to be the manager of another popular Detroit group the singing Metro’s of the hit recording “Sweetest One” fame and their subsequent respected RCA album of the same name. The Fabulous Counts would often perform at shows as the Metro’s backing band.

The Fabulous Counts first big break came after knocking several Detroit Record labels doors. They were eventually invited in by Ollie McLaughlin’s Moira studio to record, under the tutelage of Popcorn Wylie the one take hit “Jan, Jan (Moira-103). A further two Moira 45’s followed of which “Get Down People/Lunar Funk “(Moira-108) also scored high on the R&B charts. Through a deal arranged by McLaughlin The Counts released their respected “Jan, Jan” album on the Atlantic distributed Cotillion label in 1969. Moving on to Armen Boladian’s Westbound label, during 1970 the group simply changed their name to The Counts and charted with their 1971 “What’s Up Front” Westbound album, also releasing a solitary 45 “Thinking Single/Why Not Start All Over Again”. In 1972 while still part of the Westbound set up The Counts recorded two major label 45’s under the pseudonyms of Bad Smoke “Crawl Ya’ll Part 1&2” (Chess-2124) and Lunar Funk “Mr Penguin Part 1&2” (Bell 45-172), the latter being thier biggest hit. A subsequent move to Atlanta, GA saw The Counts sign with Michael Thevis’s Aware records where they recorded a further two successful albums “Love Sign” (1973) and “Funk Pump” (1975), plus a string of 45’s. In 1976 although officially never breaking up The Counts members went their separate ways to explore different life opportunity’s.

During 1978 and while still in Atlanta Leroy Emanuel borrowed money from his family and reuniting with his fellow Counts, Mose, Demo, and Jimmy Jackson Jr, they, accompanied by a local strings section recorded a session of material that spawned two songs “What’s It All About” and “Motorcity”. Which Leroy later made a deal with Terry Mendelson to release on a 45 on his TM label. The Counts had previously known Mendelson through his brother Bernie at Westbound. The TM 45 made very little noise with many of the copies having mispressed labels. Although later reissued and mistakenly credited as two previously unissued Westbound recordings on several latter Cd compilations it came to light that quite a few avid European soul collectors actually owned copies of this high quality, very elusive and desirable 45! With demand still seemingly high it seems a good time for Soul Junction to reissue it. The A-side, “What’s It All About” features its composer Leroy Emanuel on lead vocals with the other Counts adding to the backing chorus. The flipside of this 45 from the same session is the previously unreleased Mose Davis penned “Watch The Clock” which is more in keeping with the Counts traditional funk groove, enjoy.

"This very first release on »Oonops Drops« has its very own story behind it. I planned to found my own label for more than half a year when my wife Lisa worked on her songs and when the idea came to me how this would sound if Japanese Jazz trio Nautilus would arrange some of them. I have known Toshi for six years now, met him personally here in Hanover and he's such a magnificent musician, so the idea became reality and they started working on the first two tracks until a total amount of nine songs was created. I'm so proud to share this very personal project with you (which was finally produced and mastery simultaneous to the foundation of my label by accident) and I hope you like it as much as we do. For the first single release of the album I directly had the uplifting track »Everytime« in my mind and a remix which should transport the good vibes in a different direction. Pat Van Dyke, a longtime known producer and multi-instrumentalist from New Jersey took his hands on it and created a horns-loaden feel good version of it including a little guest appearance by Brooklyn based lyricist John Robinson. You can get this release on LP, 7", CD or digital or get the reduced bundle of the LP including the 7". Yours truly, Oonops."

Why you'll love it...
Recorded inside a geodome at upstate New York's The Outlier Inn, Gently Powerful is a live reimagining of Anna Wise's debut solo LP, As If It Were Forever (and includes one track, ‘’Balance In All'' from Wise's earlier release, The Feminine: Act II). Almost exactly one year to the date of its release, Wise and some of her closest collaborators safely gathered to celebrate As If It Were Forever with these intimate live recordings.

All tracks on Gently Powerful feature performances by Anna Wise (vocals, loops), Jon Bap (drums, vocals, samples, guitar), Joy Morales (keys, synthesizer, vocals) and Juuwah (bass), recorded and mixed by Steve Vealey, and mastered by Kevin Moo. The arrangements heard on these recordings were originally conceptualized as part of Re/Birth, Wise’s February 2020 residency in Los Angeles produced in partnership with Gxrlschool.

Wise first gained recognition with her band, Sonnymoon, and through collaborations with Kendrick Lamar. Wise won a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Performance for her collaboration on Lamar's ‘’These Walls,'' and she has appeared on each of his projects since good kid, m.A.A.d. city. In 2016, Wise independently released The Feminine: Act I, her first solo EP, and followed it up in 2017 with The Feminine: Act II. The studio version of As If It Were Forever saw a return to collaboration, featuring Little Simz, Jon Bap, Nick Hakim, Denzel Curry, Pink Siifu and more. Recently, Wise has also collaborated on records from Durand Bernarr, Mndsgn and L'Rain.

Sometime in 2005, a lone box of master tapes escaped an estate sale and made its way through a network of collectors, record dealers, and "junkers" into the hands of leading Ohio soul expert Dante Carfagna, who linked them to Columbus, Ohio's mysterious Prix label (See: Eccentric Soul: The Prix Label). A bit of research turned up Prix proprietor George Beter, who identified most of the unlabeled material. All it took was an endless series of phone calls and letters and two fields trips in Columbus. But one complete mystery wended its way onto our final Prix compilation. "You and Me," a simple but irrepressible demo credited only to Penny & the Quarters, was found tacked onto a mixed studio reel. Our survey of every willing lifer left on the Columbus soul scene, including retired DJs, producers, and important local artists, produced not so much as a glimmer of recognition at the name Penny & the Quarters. Though we loved the song from the first play, it may've ended up a bit buried on our original compilation, as #18 of 19 tracks. Four years later, Eccentric Soul: The Prix Label hadn't exactly become a huge seller, although listeners had repeatedly told us that the unfiltered studio demos that fill out the record's back half were true diamonds in the rough. But neither Penny nor her Quarters had appeared to claim credit for their efforts. Then, completely out of left field, we heard from respected screen actor and avowed Numero fan Ryan Gosling that Penny's piercing bit of stripped down doo-wop was being considered for inclusion in Derek Cianfrance's indie-weeper film Blue Valentine. What we didn't know was that "You and Me" had won a major role in what became an indie circuit hit, and that Penny & the Quarters would instantly assume the role of world's most famous unknown doo-wop group. Every week is a slow news week in Columbus, Ohio, and early January 2011 found the city recovering from the thrill of elevating Ted Williams_the formerly homeless guy with the awesome voice for radio_into a national news sensation. But both major daily newspapers in town, as well as the city's alternative weekly, also ran stories about how a lost and unknown Columbus soul group had become the musical centerpiece of a film already garnering Oscar buzz. That mainstream spotlight aimed at Blue Valentine and Penny & the Quarters did the trick: we finally made contact with the widow of Jay Robinson, lead Quarters' singer and songwriter. Robinson, it turned out, had also been the leader of Columbus doo-wop pioneers The Supremes (later known as "The Columbus Supremes," for reasons which should be obvious). Jay Robinson never did give up on the dream of writing a hit record; even so, the posthumous realization of his dream is cold comfort for his widow and daughter. With their blessings, we returned to those estate sale masters and pulled down another neglected track ("You Are Giving Me Some Other Love") from the still-unknown Penny and her now-partly-known Quarters. "You and Me" is a song that could not be suppressed: not when Prix failed to release it; not when Penny & the Quarters were forgotten; not when Numero stuck it at the bitter end of a much overlooked compilation. Its evolution from estate sale trash to silver-screen gold has finally returned it to big-hole 45, where it probably should have lived all along.

Big Crown Records is proud to present Piece of Me, the sophomore full length offering from Lady Wray. This is something of a homecoming for Nicole. Where her 2016 solo debut Queen Alone leaned more towards Soul and R&B with tinges of hip-hop, this record changes the mixture. It's still R&B with the textures of analog Soul, but there is a heavy Hip Hop influence that brings the sum of Nicole's career together in a new sound that will define her future. Boom-bap drums and chunky bass lines are front-and-center creating a perfect head-nodding backdrop for Lady Wray to take on the good, the bad, the difficult, and the joyful on her most personal collection of songs to date.

The title track, "Piece of Me," which has already become a classic since it's 2019 release is about the people in your life who need more than you are willing to give. This tune and the B side of the 7” “Come On In” were the first songs put to tape for this album and they were recorded with Nicole sitting in a chair 8 months pregnant with her daughter. Her voice is so powerful, so raw, so thorough on these initial songs—it's wild to think that they were recorded this way. And even wilder to know that she knocked them all out in one take. Long time collaborator and producer Leon Michels keeps the musical backing restrained and expertly executed, setting up Lady Wray for the full spotlight and setting the tone for the rest of the album.

While the upbeat energies of “Under The Sun” and “Through It All” are sure to become hits that reconnect Lady Wray with her 90s R&B fanbase, “Where Were You” offers a behind the scenes look at what those days of stardom in her youth were really like. Nicole takes on the racial tension in America with her poetic and powerful “Beauty In The Fire” and leans heavy into her faith and church upbringing on the showstopper, “Thank You”. She gushes about the profound love she’s come to know for her daughter on “Melody” and celebrates life’s ups and downs on “Joy & Pain”. In 2021 it is rare to hear a varied yet cohesive album with no “skippers”, but that is what you have here in spades. The tried and true chemistry between Lady Wray and Leon Michels has undeniably found a higher level and this album stands as a testament to conviction and dedication for all of us to enjoy and be inspired by.

With this in mind, when talking about this record, for Lady Wray, it's about a larger purpose. "My goal is always to help and to heal people with singing," she explains. "Part of that is to try and bring back real music, real singing, so people can feel something again." Now, she's not dissing anyone here, to be clear. It's just that Lady Wray cannot sing without tapping into something deeper, searching for that shared compassion between all of us. Perhaps it comes from her church upbringing, or maybe from her years of trials and tribulations in the music industry. Either way, Lady Wray is looking to bring that "Good Sound" back and the good feelings that come with it. She calls it "those inner hands," and she always means to stir them up, grabbing your attention from within.

With past albums like the Lady project and Queen Alone, it's hard to not acknowledge that Lady Wray plus Leon Michels production equals magic. But this magic is also coming from the fact that Lady Wray is now squarely herself, calling her shots, and singing to help heal first—everything else is secondary. "It's a beautiful thing I've always wanted in my career, and now I have it," Lady Wray says. "They encourage me to be me all day long." This is Lady Wray at her finest, and she's giving us all a piece of where she's at these days.

The timeless ‘’Rhythm of Life ‘’ album by James Mason is possibly one of the greatest vocal Jazz fusion releases of all time. Now 2022 we have been able to release two further monster tracks. “Rhythm of life” the title track from the LP is an up-tempo vocal dancer, a groovy driving jazz fusion masterpiece. And very excitingly, we have been able to make an exclusive 7” cut, the vocal soul gem “Good Thing”, on the flip. This one is huge

British Columbia producer Jamison Isaak didn't anticipate an adulthood of globe-trotting songcraft, but teenage exposure to iconic French house music videos cast a spell on him that still holds. Catalyzed by synthetic sights and sounds from oceans away, he patiently taught himself primitive software and recording programs, reverse engineering the heady, swooning horizons of the dance music that had permanently bewitched him.A decade later, having amassed an expansive discography of soft-focus synth pop and romantic electronica - crisscrossing the planet many times in the process - the subtext of his project's journey rings clear: "Teen Daze is dream fulfillment." Enter Interior. An ode to electric futures glimpsed in ecstatic heights, from bedrooms to big rooms, it's an album of first loves refracted through prisms of wisdom, wounds, and wonder. Filter house and flashing lights; soft acid and vaporous neon; bumping clubs in spiral towers: "Like what the teenagers in Akira might be listening to."Interior is Isaak's love letter to his own artistic awakening, to the paradigm shifts inherent in youthful discovery and remote dreaming - your world exploded, your life forever changed. It's music of skylines, escape, and sensual energy, forever cresting through nights that never end.For Fans of Com Truise, Toro Y Moi, Tycho, Tourist.

Gratitude is the eagerly anticipated new solo album from Abiodun Oyewole, the poet, teacher and founding member of The Last Poets. The album liner notes include an extensive new interview with Abiodun himself, detailing the writing process of the album. Looking back, the Last Poets are often referred to as the godfathers of rap, and by listening to their early recordings; it's easy to hear why. Their words encompass revolution, sex, death, drugs, and Black Power - they own their words. From their mouths - words are a sense of pride, a statement, and a feeling of empowerment. There's no self-conscious hang-up with the Last Poets using words as an art form. On May 19th, 1968 (in celebration of Malcolm X's birthday), The Last Poets performed their first ever concert in Mount Morris Park (in Harlem), now called Marcus Garvey Park. Their debut album was released in 1970 including poet/singer Abiodun Oyewole. Now AFAR is proud to present a whole new way of thinking socially, politically, emotionally, and humanly - via the perspective of Abiodun Oyewole of The Last Poets with his new solo album 'Gratitude' - it's not a protest album, it's an inspirational LP/CD via the inclusive words and God-like voice of Abiodun - this is not an angry man, but an older wiser man - reflecting on his life and spiritual quests. Rappers love him for coining the phrase "Party and Bullshit" decades ago - but this is not that - this is a sacred journey with a universal message for all people regardless of their background and nationality. // "One Of The Most Influential Spoken-Word Groups That Pioneered Hip-Hop" NPR // "Experimenting With Street Poetry And Percussive Sound, The Music Of Harlem's Last Poets Helped Lay The Groundwork For Hip-Hop" Rolling Stone //Ltd edition Double Black Vinyl + Interview booklet. Hailing from Moss Side, Manchester, this young talent has been steadily building a rep for himself over the past few years as one of the UK's most exciting soul vocalists, with his releases encompassing an eclectic assortment of alternative R&B, future soul, hip hop and D&B. Influenced by an array of neo-soul artists, such as D'Angelo and Anderson .Paak, his own soulful style has already seen him tour and collaborate with a number of UK peers; working on projects with label-mates Children of Zeus & Australia's REMi, and supporting the likes of Etta Bond & The Mouse Outfit, as well as performing sell-out headline solo shows in Manchester and London, and playing various festivals across Europe, including the We Out Here festival very recently.

Since he began developing his music in 2017, [ K S R ] has had support from the likes of 1Xtra, BBC Radio 1, BBC Introducing, Mixmag, NTS, Reprezent, Unity & Soho Radio, in addition to featuring on a slew of D&B tracks with artists like Lenzman, BCee, Emba & Redeyes. The collab with Emba was recently named a 'Kiss FM Future Selection' courtesy of Hybrid Minds and features have been supported on Spotify's 'New Music Friday' and 'Mandem - Kings' amongst others. His debut release 'Unfiltered' appeared on Polarface Records in 2019, which was followed by single 'Flex With Me' (also produced by Tyler Daley from Children of Zeus) then an independent second EP, 'Take Control', followed in late 2020 (during the pandemic) which amassed over 500k streams. Additionally to the releases, he was recently recruited by Manchester United as part of their 21/22 season kit announcements, as well as working with Nike and Size? on a special MCR-themed Air Force 1 release.

It's now time for a new extended project from Roosevelt Kazaula Sigsbert - better known as [ K S R ]. 'Peace + Harmony' is a solid set of alternative R&B, produced by Dom Porter and mixed by Eric Lau. Six tracks in all, including the single, 'Harmless' (which received support from the likes of Mr. Scruff (Worldwide FM), BBC Manchester and Victoria Jane (bbc Radio 1), was 'Track Of The Week' on 1Xtra/BBC Introducing, and saw the video racking up several thousand plays in its first weekend) and follow-up 'cgwy' featuring Children of Zeus on a brand new interpretation of their classic track 'Get What's Yours'. From the intro track 'I Wonder', to the downlow future soul of 'Lily Apart', to the autobiographical vibes of 'Born In '98', to the closing track 'Given Summer', also featuring the vocals of Ayeisha Raquel, each track on the EP is of course laced with Roosevelt's unmistakable silky smooth vocals, and is set to join his already impressive catalogue of underground soul classics such as 'Alien Boo', 'Stylin' and 'New Love'.

[ K S R ] says "my third EP, [ P E A C E + H A R M O N Y ] is a collection of my thoughts and experiences from my journey throughout the last two years of my life. Lots of aspects of my life changed over 24 months, along with everyone around the globe. When we were thrown into the unknown at the start of 2020, I stepped away from music for a while as I couldn't find any peace in my creativity and needed to evolve. I finally started to feel cohesive with my songwriting and music, and I could feel harmony between myself and my art once again."

In a genre belonging to crooners like Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, James Brown and Otis Redding, authenticity is a requirement. Enter Anduze, a unique vocalis whose riffs evoke the retro sounds of the aforementioned artists, but reverently done his way – a fresh brand, re-imagines and crefted into a modern depiction of the era. Anduze was raised on his father’s native land of St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands. His distinctive upbringing still lines the threading of his creative fabric, which continues to expand into all corners of taday’s musical landscape. It’s been over a decade since Anduze last released a full album. A lot has changed and progressed since then. He left behind the LA/Hollywood nights in exchange for a better quality of life in Athens, Greece. Also, during this span, he’s been a multi-featured artist on collaborations with producers such as Satin Jackets, Art of Tones, LTJ Xperience, Gramatik, and more… However, his most noteworthy ascent is as lead singer (and songwriter) of Austrian act, Parov Stelar, with whom he tours worldwide. Still, with all his accomplishments within the electronic world, it was time for Anduze to get back to his own sound – Soul. Using the pandemic as an opportunity, instead of a crutch, Anduze recorded “Aura,” a nine-song album that blurs the lines of soul, funk, pop, folk, and R&B, with 20 contributing musicians. If you like Prince, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Lenny Kravitz, Terence Trent D’arby etc…this album takes influences from all their best moments and combines them into one mighty explosion that is simply, Anduze. These days he is also living the new life of his song in collaboration with LTJ Xperience entitled Bad Side which has been included in the new game update for Play Station GTA 'Los Santos' starring the DJ producer Moodyman and in the soundtrack of the new series And Just Like That, a popular follow-up to Sex And The City, which aired worldwide.

MESTIZO BEAT incorporates a diverse mix of sub-genres withinthe Funk and Soul spectrum. They have released a string of45s with labels like Colemine, F-Spot, Common Good, andnow ATS! We couldn't decide which tunes should be assignedthe A and B sides, so we left them unmarked, for you todecide. "Poppin Off" catches your attention right from thestart with some Metersesque organ and guitar interplay. Itsettles into the groove and this is a feel good Southern Funkinfluenced burner. A 4 piece horn section comprised ofmembers of Sure Fire Soul Ensemble mixed with Jungle Fire'sSteve Haney on percussion, round out this recording. On the flip side is "City Of The Body Bag" which would haveyou believe you were hanging out somewhere in South EastLos Angeles in 1973. This tune takes heavy influence fromthe band "War" and is destined to be another Latin Funkstruttin' classic. FOR FANS OF: The Meters, War, New Mastersounds, Jungle Fire...
