Camelot, the legendary seat of King Arthur's court in Early Middle Ages Britain, was probably not a real place. Stefan Christensen returns with his first album in three years. In Time sees Christensen enlist the support of the New Haven crew, with contributions from all members of Headroom and Mountain Movers. The album delves back into full band style psych rock akin to his 2019 Unknown Fortune album, albeit in a more deliberate and meditative manner that close listeners will find deeply rewarding. Although In Time was recorded in just a couple of weekend sessions in late 2023, the songs featured were being crafted as far back as 2021. The album nods to a number of different strains of international psychedelia. At different times listeners will catch hints of influence from Sweden’s Pärson Sound / Träd Gräs Och Stenar family tree, UK psych-folk heavyweights like Trees, New Zealand freaks like The Garbage And The Flowers and Space Dust, Kraut-y passages ala Faust, as well as the obvious homage to the Ditch-era in the album’s title track. There is also the notable “Foreign Outlaw,” which is the first to feature Christensen playing jouhikko, an instrument he began playing recently when delving deeper into his own Finnish heritage, the countries traditional songs, and modern experimenters like Pekko Käppi and Lau Nau. All of this is filtered through Christensen’s typical somber and muted delivery, as he contemplates time, the inevitability of its passage, and the horrors along the way. Unlike the dirge of Christensen’s home recorded work In Time was beautifully recorded to tape by John Miller, the New Haven crew’s in-house producer/engineer. Drummer Ross Menze dubbed the album “Hi-Fi Steve” in the process. This shift in fidelity is wonderfully paired with the mesmerizing artwork of Ryan Kalentowski, who created the full jacket and insert layout. Limited to 300 copies.

Music From Memory is thrilled to introduce Dead Sound, the collaborative project of Marco Sterk (aka Young Marco) and Berlin-based pop-auteur John Moods. Both artists are no strangers to the label; Sterk forms one third of the trio Gaussian Curve, while Moods released the 2022 album ‘Hidden Gem’ with The Zenmenn.

Their collaboration was both planned and spontaneous; Sterk initially reached out in 2022 expressing his desire to work with Moods. The pair finally got together in 2024 to produce ‘Into The Void’, an album that burst into life over the course of a few creatively charged days in each other’s company.

Moods’ dream-like, emotionally charged music wears its heart on its sleeve; its very human vulnerability makes it a perfect match for Sterk’s strong sense of melody and textural sonic visions.

‘Into The Void’ carries these psychedelic traits in its DNA, but they exist layered deep amongst the shadows. Painting on a wide canvas that effortlessly skips between genres, the pair weave anything that inspires them into a truly unique tapestry; a bold attempt to touch at the beyond.

Exploring the space between perception (level of the mind) and the nature of the universe (actual level of reality) seems traditionally like an impossible task. But there’s gotta be a time and a space for the profound and this album invites the listener to go deep, letting go of concepts such as love and opening oneself up to one’s own authentic journey. This transformative force of healing is a central theme of ‘Into The Void’, a path that is lined with light and darkness in equal measure. But, as Moods says, “do not skip the darkness, let that door open and swallow you. And maybe you’ll find, it's not as dark as you perceived at first."

Nail Tolliday aka Nail is a house music don who rose to prominence back in the 90s with the cult DiY collective out of Nottingham, but also worked as one half of downtempo pair Bent. For those of you who"ve mislaid your history goggles, this archival release recalls an ancient time in the world of recorded music. Yes, back in the dinosaur days of the 1990s, a creature known as Aerial M walked the earth, before evolving into Papa M and PAJO and beyond and back. Even then, the music of M had a next-wave vibe, walking upright among the knuckle-draggers (and having drinks in the evening with others of its genetic detatchment). It was too much to last very long, of course - but some things end up lasting forever, don"t they? Fuck! So it is today that Drag City, an organization largely set up to bring you the best of all available M recordings, is proud to be there for the release of the only Aerial M session ever recorded for John Peel"s BBC Radio One show, as it was originally recorded on 3rd March 1998 and broadcast on 2nd April of the same year.The studio versions of these songs, which appear on Aerial M"s S/t album (DC114) and Papa M"s Hole of Burning Alms comp (DC231), were played by "M" himself (now revealed to be David Pajo!), which makes this album a rare alternative view of the canonical M, played by an actual Aerial M band who, all too briefly, embodied the sound for a year or so before Papa brought a brand new bag.This Session found them fortuitously roadburned from several weeks in the European Theatre. Originating from Riverside, California, the BellRays have been mixing punk, rock and soul with the unique authenticity that has made them who they are in today. The tradition that the band continued over the last thirty years inspired them to infuse their influences. It's in their DNA. Heavy Steady Go! #is described by the two as 'a festival in album form'. It's contrasting style mashups and musical collaborations between each quartet is powerfully concentrated rock and roll." Robert and Lisa explain that with these songs "we pay homage to Tom Petty, Bon Scott, Fleetwood Mac, Howlin' Wolf, Cheap Trick, Betty Davis, and dozens of others that inspired this album. Alliyah Enyo’s genius 2022 ‘Echo's Disintegration’ album infused William Basinski's "Disintegration Loops" with choral smoke, and she now returns with an even more immersive followup alongside ambient enigma and Kelela producer Florian T M Zeisig, making heady and translucent loop-finding vocal soundscapes tipped if you’re into Grouper, Cucina Povera, Seefeel, Julianna Barwick, or Selected Ambient Works II’s frozen dream-weaving.

In 2022, Enyo worked with the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop on an epic two-hour composition made from tape loops inspired by selkies, mythical creatures in Celtic folklore. Contemplating memory, grief and time itself, Enyo devised a "sonorous myth" installation and performance that drowned her voice in the deep sea, using echo to help parallel the communication of humpback whales. It was powerful enough for her to net the award for Sonic Arts at the Scottish Awards for New Music last year, and it's this material that she revisits here, entering into a dialog with Berlin-based producer Florian T M Zeisig, here adopting a new avatar - Angel R.

On the A-side, Enyo distills two hours of the original composition into 11 haunted fragments that ooze in and out of each other like a dream. Reworked at Glasgow's Green Door studio, she sculpts her voice into weightless Radigue-style incantations, leaning into the tape loops' corroded inconsistencies. Enyo's voice becomes the selkie's song: wordless echoes that sound as if they're being dragged slowly towards the sea bed. There are remnants of folk forms in there; we hear traces of church music and Celtic ballads - but she obscures her influences with dubbed reverb, distortion and repetition. Phrases disappear and re-appear, time becomes a loop, best absorbed in a single sitting to properly perceive its graceful, sinking bliss. By the end of the side, Enyo’s vocals are completely waterlogged, dimmed against Robin Guthrie-like shimmers, all brassy, blurred incantations emanating from the depths of a floatation tank.

Florian T M Zeisig responds on the B-side with three flooded, longer-form pieces that will appeal to anyone who devoured his album of corroded Enya loops a couple of years ago. Enyo's voice is now reduced to a whisper, blistered and gauzy expressions that float over dense pads on 'Untitled I' before getting lost in the weeds completely on the muggy 'Untitled II'. On the closing 'Gates of Heaven', he sculpts Enyo's voice until it's just an illusory, hypnotic reflection, slow-fading into the aether.

My Heart, an Inverted Flame, the synth-doom duo of Andee Connors (Thrill Jockey signed A Minor Forest) and Marc Kate (I Am Spoonbender, Never Knows) eschew traditional doom weaponry (i.e. guitar and bass) entirely, to generate something at once doom-adjacent, but at the same time, wholly other: a series of devastatingly heavy, seismic rituals conjured up via Connors' caveman-crush drumming and Kate's blown out, wall-of-sound synthesizers. The result: an art-damaged, cosmos-destroying, wildly psychedelic rite of dolorous, droning dirgery, churning, black hole heaviness and sublime, cinematic annihilation. Apparitions is the sound of violent contradiction. The synthesis of molten drones with cataclysmic percussion - worlds that are so at odds with one another, they become unified in moving stillness. Simultaneous divine ecstasy and extreme horror. Captured live in their raw form by Seth Manchester, this duo of improvisations is an exploration of the far-reaching bands of the dynamic spectrum, resulting in overflowing and incandescent energy – like the sun perpetually giving off heat. Celebrating the 75th anniversary of three top 10 R&B singles - “Hobo Blues”, “Hoogie Boogie” and “Crawlin’ King Snake.” This 4-track EP includes the bonus track, “Hastings Street Boogie,” which is also celebrating its 75th anniversary.

It was sixty years ago, in June 1964, when John Lee Hooker entered the British singles charts for the first time with “Dimples,” peaking at #23. The track had been cut for the Vee-Jay label in America some eight years prior in Chicago. “Boom Boom,” issued in the UK in 1963, had already caught the ears and feet of the nascent mod movement. Both songs became live staples on the British blues scene, with The Animals covering both on their debut UK LP issued later in 1964.

But in 1952, way before the sharp-suited mods were attracted to John Lee Hooker’s equally well-cut look and infectious music, the British Vogue label had issued “Hoogie Boogie,” recorded in 1949, on a 78rpm disc. Blues music was for the aficionado back then, and the four tracks on this EP hark back to those earliest recordings by John Lee Hooker. “Hobo Blues,” “Hoogie Boogie,” and “Crawlin’ King Snake” all went Top 10 in the US R&B chart in 1949.

This is unadorned John Lee Hooker, getting to the heart of his blues and boogie, just guitar, vocal, and tapping foot, 15 years before his music caught the ears of a wider and enthusiastic British audience. Decades may have passed, but the music remains fresh and vital.

This EP is housed in a beautiful period-era sleeve drawn and designed by Niall McCormack.

In sports or on the faculty benches, we call them ‘false beginners’. If Mandibula is their first death metal band, the musicians all have a loaded CV in independent and innovative music. Let’s say they advance masked, which suits well their new disturbing and morbid universe.

The band is only one entity, a secret society made up of five members: vocalist FK, bassist RC, drummer AP and guitarists NC and ALG. They never highlight their background when presenting Mandibula. But if we do some research, we may discover that they have already been seen or heard in very different contexts: La Colonie de Vacances, Les Agamemnonz, Pyjamarama, John Makay, Spelterini and probably a dozen others...

False beginning but true body! At each of their appearances, they deliver an intense session of crass and brutal death metal, with profuse riffing, grindcore aggressions and noise music asperities. Urbanatribù was an extremely interesting project based in Alessandria, deep North-Italian province. Formed by bassist Flavio Gemma and cyber wizard Massimiliano Bocchio, the outfit had a distinctive way to interpretate electronic and dance music. Gemma founded some key Italian 80's wave groups like Viridanse and C.O.D.E.X. with some late digressions in the punk scene with Peggio Punx. Bocchio had its debut on the seminal imprint Minus Habens Records in 1994 under the moniker Klange, reflecting the unique and radical sound of the label. Inspired by John Carpenter movies, rough basslines and british ghost stories, Urbanatribù records camed out against any order.

Pink Rhythm was one of John Rocca"s mid-80"s solo side projects and a somewhat evolution of his pioneering early-80s band, Freeez.After Freeez ended, John still had some ideas left over which he explored with Andy Stennett of Freeez. John also re-worked one of the final jazz funk songs written (but unused) by Freeez called "India". He named the project Pink Rhythm after his self-funded, entrepreneurial record label that he used to launch Freeez.Pink Rhythm lasted a brief year or two, between 1984 and 1985. In 1985, three singles were released, including "Melodies Of Love, which has become a cult favorite. It has been described as "timeless drum-machine soul music" and a "cult funk slow jam".Over the years, John Rocca"s music has been sampled by many, including Jamie xx, Empress Of, Brandy, Burial, Todd Terry, Coolio, Cut Chemist and more. Often credited as one of the pioneers of brit-funk, John"s music is iconic and has been used in TV/Movies like; Better Call Saul, Midsommar, Irma Vep plus the fashion world for brands including Calvin Klein, Louis Vuitton and more. "Melodies of Love" - though never a pop hit - was recently been used the Joaquin Phoenix film Beau is Afraid as well as in the acclaimed British Film Blue Jean. It was also recently featured in a high-end ad campaign for Piaget.It is pure, smooth 80s drum machines, it is synth sounds, saxophones and keyboards.... it"s retro, but it could also be current. Haoua and Azera Doga, also known as Les Soeurs Doga, are twin sisters from Burkina Faso's capital Ouagadougou. The power duo, which has long been a household name in its home country, has been active since the early 2000s and surprises with its ability to switch seamlessly between traditional idioms, which are mostly sung in their mother tongue Mooré, and modern, almost rap-like songs. And in doing so, they address the most pressing problems of their country, such as terrorism, poverty or hunger, while at the same time transforming them into rousing call-and-response anthems that are 100% positive. Or, as the Burkinabe press put it: "A strong spiritual message coupled with festive optimism". We are delighted to be able to present these outstanding artists in Germany once again.

They will be accompanied by their Hamburg friend, beatmaker and sampling wizard Viktor Marek. The globetrotting producer and DJ is the manager of the infamous Golden Pudel Club in St. Pauli and is known for his involvement in projects such as The Kings of Dubrock, 8 Doogymoto and his dubstep/folk project Sufi Dub Brothers, which he runs together with Pakistani sitar virtuoso Ashraf Sharif Khan. The recording sat on a shelf for 10 years, and is finally unveiled through this release. Housed in gatefold jackets with matte varnish and UV spot outer printing. Includes an 8-page booklet. Limited white vinyl edition features alternate artwork. Spaceman and Coxon will perform the work in London, New York, Los Angeles, and Eggleston’s hometown of Memphis, on the invitation of the photographer’s son Winston Eggleston.

Dark Entries again shines a spotlight on bathhouse disco don Patrick Cowley with a newly remastered release of Kickin’ In. Although Cowley tragically passed from AIDS-related illness in 1982, he left an extensive archive of unreleased tapes, many of which Dark Entries has had the honor of releasing. While working as a lighting technician at The City, SF’s disco cabaret, Cowley saw rising star Frank Loverde perform. Cowley asked Loverde to contribute vocals to some material in progress, and Frank, Linda Imperial, and Peggy Gibbons joined Cowley in the studio. The resulting songs included “Kickin’ In,” a 9-minute cybernetic disco stormer that taps into the essence of Cowley’s hi-NRG sound: equal parts spaced out and zoned in on the dancefloor. In May 1978 Cowley joined Loverde on stage at The City to perform “Kickin’ In” as they opened for disco diva Sylvester. “Kickin’ In” was initially released in 2015 via Honey Soundsystem who found the tapes in the basement of Megatone Records owner John Hedges. This newly remastered version was made possible due to the discovery of the original multi-track recordings of "Kickin’ In," allowing for a fresh mixdown by Jim Hopkins as well as the creation of a new instrumental version. Also included are two impeccably sleazy Cowley jams recorded in 1980, “Thief of Love” and “Make It Come Loose.” Cowley narrates excerpts from his erotic journals on these raunchy slow-burners, capturing the vibe of SF’s leather bars and backrooms. “Thief of Love” features frequent Cowley collaborator Paul Parker on background vocals. This reissue of Kickin’ In includes features an illustration by Gwenaël Rattke that originally appeared Cowley’s erotic journal, Mechanical Fantasy Box, as well as a postcard with lyrics. “Patrick parted the veil and entered a dark world of forbidden vices, wondrous musical panoramas and bold, strident, hopeful possibilities. David Baluteau aka Joi N’Juno is a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, producer and full-time studio engineer with many years honing his craft. David earned his stripes as founder, composer and lead singer of the cult French drum & bass-electro-punk band “La Phaze” which has been running successfully for 25 years and recently concluded an extensive 2-year tour.

Now focusing on this new chapter in his creative journey, Joi N’Juno serves up an album that is at the same time both fresh & mature. The album encompasses a range of influences, from classic 70s and 80s disco vibes a là Niles Rogers, zouk boogie from Kassav, afro funk vibes from Nigeria as well as modern disco house motifs.

The resulting concoctions are aimed at the dance floor, whilst retaining a certain “pop” appeal in their catchy sing-along compositions. Punchy production, funky guitars, groovy bass lines and infectious vocal melodies combine with dextrous keyboard wizardry, culminating in a fusion that has wide appeal both on and off the dance floor.
