Blue Giant" (original story by Shinichi Ishizuka), a popular jazz manga series that has sold over 9.2 million copies since its serialization began in 2013, has finally been made into a movie.

The music of "Blue Giant" was composed by pianist Hiromi Uehara, who has been highly acclaimed for her "manga that you can hear the sound of. The original music (first Note, N.E.W., WE Will) and end-roll music (Blue Giant) for the trio "jass" formed by the main character, Dai Miyamoto, and his friends were also written for this film.

The saxophone player for Dai Miyamoto, who aspires to be the best jazz player in the world, is Tomoaki Baba, who was unanimously selected in an audition of leading players from Japan and abroad. Shunji Tamada, who was a high school classmate of Dai from Sendai, plays drums, and Shun Ishiwaka, who is also a member of millennium parade, joins him at the love call of Hiromi Uehara. And Hiromi Uehara plays the piano for the pianist Yukinori Sawabe, whom Dai meets in Tokyo.

Top musicians from the classical to jazz worlds, including string members of "Hiromi Uehara the Piano Quintet," also participated in the recording of the film's accompaniment music and band performances.

Said to be one of the great live shows that Neil Young and Crazy Horse performed, the album includes live versions of songs from their Ragged Glory album, released just prior, along with classics from across their catalogue.

Native American guitarist Jesse Ed Davis was the “go-to” guy for a remarkable group of musicians. Starting in the mid-‘60s, he toured with Conway Twitty, then became a key part of Taj Mahal’s band, playing on several albums and tours including an appearance in The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, and, perhaps most famously, accompanied George Harrison during the Concert for Bangladesh, followed by work on various solo albums by John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Gene Clark, Leonard Cohen, and Jackson Browne (that’s Jesse taking the solo on his 1972 breakout hit “Doctor My Eyes”).
All this activity caught the eye of ATCO Records, who released his debut LP Jesse Davis in 1971. The album featured Leon Russell, Eric Clapton, Gram Parsons, Merry Clayton, Ben Sidran, John Simon (producer of The Band), Alan White (of Yes), and many others including Delaney Bramlett behind the mixing desk. A year later, Atco released Ululu containing some of the same all-stars, plus Duck Dunn, Jim Keltner, and Dr. John – and a version of George Harrison’s “Sue Me, Sue You Blues” before even George recorded it.
Of late, there’s been something of a Jesse Ed Davis revival. Besides Real Gone Records releases, Davis was a major figure in the documentary Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World…and now this fall comes a full-fledged biography, Washita Love Child: The Life and Times of Jesse Ed Davis, by Dr. Douglas Miller.
To honor the man and the occasion of the book’s release (and to slake guitar-heads the world over thirsting for more tasty Jesse Ed licks), Real Gone Music releases Tomorrow May Not Be Your Day: The Unissued Atco Recordings 1970-1971, a double-LP collection consisting of, as the title says, all unreleased recordings taken from Jesse’s sessions for his two Atco solo records. Along the way you’ll find completely unreleased songs (“Slinky Jam”), unexpected covers of “Ain’t No Beatle,” “Kansas City,” and “Tracks of My Tears,” unissued instrumentals (including a version of Dylan’s “Love Minus Zero/No Limit”), and an entire side featuring alternate versions of Jesse’s masterpiece, “Washita Love Child.”
Remastered by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision, and featuring notes by Dr. Miller festooned by photos contributed by Jesse’s son William “Billy” Noriega, Tomorrow May Not Be Your Day: The Unissued Atco Recordings 1970-1971 represents a major archival find from one of rock’s most intriguing characters, out on Cobalt “Blue Jean” vinyl limited to 1500 copies worldwide.

This compilation album was assembled by Hakkin Date, who is also an artist himself. It was awarded the German Music Critics Award 2023 in the category of Electronic & Experimental. The definition of ambient music, which can be played to create silence, is wide-ranging. Among them, Ryuichi Sakamoto's pursuit is evident in the music of his later years, when he began to make extensive use of field recordings, noise, and other non-instrumental sounds. Micro Ambient Music" is a memorial work spun by musicians who revere Sakamoto's music of that period. This is a collection of music that uses non-instrumental sounds to bring silence.

This dense 11 disc retrospective of Pauline Oliveros’ early and unreleased electronic work includes her very first piece made for tape in 1959. Organized chronologically, this set not only documents Pauline's earliest electronic music but it also functions as an early history of electronic music itself. Follow as she participates in the establishment of the legendary San Francisco Tape Music Center and then moves to University Of Toronto Electronic Music Studio, Mills Tape Music Center and University of California San Diego Electronic Music Center.

This 10th anniversary edition is packaged in a clamshell-style box containing all the tracks from the 2012 edition spread out over 11 CDs each housed in single pocket sleeves. A 36 page booklet includes extensive liner notes and essays from Pauline Oliveros, Alex Chechile, Ramon Sender, David Bernstein, Corey Arcangel.

Pauline Oliveros was a composer, performer, humanitarian and an important pioneer in American Music. Acclaimed internationally, she forged new ground for herself and others. Through improvisation, electronic music, sonic philosophy, teaching and meditation she created a body of work with such breadth of vision that it profoundly affects those who experience it and eludes many who try to write about it.

Pauline Oliveros built a loyal following through her concerts, recordings, publications and musical compositions written for soloists and ensembles in music, dance, theater and inter-arts companies. She provided leadership within the music community from her early years as the first Director of the Center for Contemporary Music (formerly the Tape Music Center at Mills), director of the Center for Music Experiment during her 14 year tenure as professor of music at the University of California at San Diego to acting in an advisory capacity for organizations such as The National Endowment for the Arts, The New York State Council for the Arts, and many private foundations. She served as Distinguished Research Professor of Music at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Darius Milhaud Composer in Residence at Mills College. Oliveros was vocal about representing the needs of individual artists, about the need for diversity and experimentation in the arts, and promoting cooperation and good will among people.

She was honored with awards, grants and concerts internationally. Whether performing at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., in an underground cavern, or in the studios of West German Radio, Oliveros' commitment to interaction with the moment went unchanged.

Oliveros passed away peacefully on November 24, 2016 but her sonic legacy and philosophy continues to grow and inspire.

Born Herman Poole Blount in Alabama during 1914, Sun Ra first emerged on the Chicago jazz scene during the late 1940s. One of the great avant-garde composers of his generation - leading the way on piano, organ, and (eventually) synthesizer - beginning in the mid-1950s and lasting until his death in 1993, led the Arkestra, a band through which a near countless number of important artists passed and collaborated with, and many remained for the duration of their careers, notably Marshall Allen, John Gilmore and June Tyson. Known for their wild costumes and theatrics, Ra’s eccentric image and claims that he was from Saturn was deeply political, imagining an alternate social order, history, and future for African Americans that rests as a pioneering force in the Afro-Futurist movement.

While Sun Ra and his Arkestra can best be located within the broader movements of avant-garde jazz - particularly as innovators of free and spiritual jazz in their evolving forms - the composer was notoriously hard to pin down on creative terms. He was a visionary titan whose work traversed nearly half of the 20th Century, continuously pushing the idiom of jazz at every turn, ingesting and incorporating the entire history African American music - the blues, R&B, soul, gospel, ragtime, hot jazz, swing, bebop, free jazz, and fusion, etc. - into his work, without any division or hierarchy, producing roughly 100 full lengths bear his name, beginning with 1957’s “Jazz By Sun Ra Vol.1”, and stretching well beyond his death in 1993. Despite how much was captured and released, remarkably, rare and previously unheard recordings continue to emerge and amaze.

Recorded live at Teatro Giulio Cesare on March 28, 1980, comprising an astounding 27 compositions, including the highly celebrated “Astro Black”, “Mr. Mystery”, “Romance of Two Planets”, “Space Is the Place”, “We Travel the Spaceways”, and “Calling Planet Earth”, over six vinyl sides. High among the greatest live gigs by the Arkestra captured on tape, carefully mastered by Matt Bordin at Outside Inside Studio, “Live in Rome 1980” is a near perfect snapshot of the band’s versatility and range, including many of their most notably and famous songs, as well as striking renditions of the Horace Henderson penned Benny Goodman number “Big John’s Special”, Fletcher Henderson’s “Yeah Man!”, and "Limehouse Blues”, displaying Ra’s willingness to address and rework the entire, diverse history of jazz in a single go.

Heard in its totality, perhaps what makes “Live in Rome 1980” most striking is the way in which the concert plays out. Roughly the first half encounters the band locked in some of the most out-there, free jazz fire that can be imagined, weaving a startling sense of interplay and furious energy into a brilliant tapestry of writhing sonority, the likes of which were only really achieved by this band. The second half, with only moments of exception that return to the furious energy of the first, is very different affair, easy toward the vocal standards, led by June Tyson’s vocals and the joyous collective chanting of the band, for which they have become so widely celebrated, threading the sounds of off-kilter big band swing with heavy grooves and imagines of outer space.

Urpa i musell feels very fortunate to announce its third release (UiM 003) after a long period of fertile collaboration with the film production company Andergraun Films: the 4-LP Box Set Les músiques per a Albert Serra by the inscrutable band Molforts.
The box set puts together the main musical works that the band created between 2006 and 2018 for the Catalan film director Albert Serra. It includes the soundtracks for three films —Honor de cavalleria / Honour of the Knights (2006), Història de la meva mort / Story of My Death (2013) and La mort de Louis XIV / Last Days of Louis XIV (2016)—, two art pieces —Cubalibre (2012, Documenta, Kassel) and Singularity (2015, Biennale di Venezia)— and the recent play Liberté (2018, Volksbühne, Berlin).
Albert Serra is considered one of the most singular, radical and also controversial filmmakers working today. Tirelessly seeking never-before-seen images, his films and other works are characterised by an improbable balance between wild freedom and exquisite sophistication.
The band Molforts are the creators of all the music in his works and integral members of the creative milieu around Andergraun Films. Their work links intimately with the pieces it is made for. The relationship between music and image is deeply eloquent, not obvious, resulting in unique, suggestive soundscapes.

40 Years ago Hunting Lodge was nearing the peak of its fertile “Tribal” period. In celebration of this anniversary we are releasing Nomad Souls, Tribal Warning Shot (expanded) and The Harvest (live/expanded). All of the included tracks have been lovingly remastered from the original reels and cassettes, restored and mastered for digital by Grant Richardson. Nomad Souls LP was released in the fall of 1984 on S/M Operations in the U.S., and in the following spring on Side Effekts Records, U.K.. Tribal Warning Shot 12” 4-track EP was released early 1985 on S/M Operations (U.S.). The title track was remixed with drums added for a 12” 45 release on Normal Records (Germany) soon thereafter. This version appears here (the original mix is included as a digital bonus track). A new remix of the 1983 7” “Night From Night” b/w “Untitled” is included, along with 2 tracks that appeared on compilation albums and one unreleased track. The Harvest cassette was a collection of live Hunting Lodge tracks circa 1984. Those tracks are #15, #18 through #27, and digital bonus track #1. The Detroit show bears the distinction of being the only time Roselle Williams (“The Wolf Hour”) sang live with the band. Included here are two previously unreleased tracks, one from Chicago and the other from Detroit. This set features a replica of the original S/M Operations Nomad Souls cover, and of the Normal Records 12” art, which was designed by T.M. Caldwell & executed by Trish Damon. The third sleeve features a newly designed back cover by Rolaid Alpo Cola, and an inner panel including the original Harry O. Morris promo poster artwork along with an essay from Graeme Revell. Puppy38 assisted in design and pulled together all of the design elements. Includes a limited edition 34-page booklet. This tome includes a replica of the original S/M Operations booklet (originally included in Nomad Souls / Tribal Warning Shot mail-orders) and has been expanded to feature detailed information pertaining to this LP set. All of the new artwork, as well as that of the original, are the creations of the legendary T. M. Caldwell.

Southern Rock Opera is the third studio album by the American rock band Drive-By Truckers, released in 2001. Originally released as a double album covering an ambitious range of subject matter from the politics of race to 1970s stadium rock, Southern Rock Opera either imagines, or filters, every topic through the context of legendary Southern band Lynyrd Skynyrd.

New West Records is proud to present a remixed and remastered deluxe edition LP featuring a resequenced record as well as a third disc with multiple bonus tracks including a song “Mystery Song” that was recorded one night in Birmingham. Lead Singer, Patterson Hood explains, ““Birmingham” and “Moved” were originally part of Act I on original CD release. This is the first vinyl version to feature “Moved” and we felt that “Birmingham” would be the best other song to move without messing up the story element of Betamax Guillotine. We moved them here to keep the vinyl sides within time of maximum high fidelity. (Under 23 minutes per mastering guidelines).

In the process of re-mixing the original tracks for the album. We stumbled upon a mysterious track that was recorded late one night in Birmingham. None of us have any memory whatsoever of recording it. The song itself was never even written down, just made up on the spot while the tape was rolling. We’re calling it “Mystery Song.” It’s actually a keeper.”

This 3-disc deluxe edition comes packed in a foil stamped rigid slipcase with the original album packaged as a 2xLP set in gatefold. The 3rd LP is packaged in a separate jacket. Each record comes with a 28-page book that is given the spot gloss treatment throughout.

Als The Residents im Jahr 1978 die 33 RPM EP Duck Stab! Im 7" Format veröffentlichten, war das für die Gruppe eine nette Abwechslung von den sich über Jahre (1975 -1979) hinziehenden, anspruchsvollen und experimentellen Aufnahmen an ihrem epochalen Eskimo Album. Außerdem brauchte das Label Ralph Records, eine Einnahmequelle um die lange Phase ohne ein "echtes neues" Album zu überbrücken. Zur allgemeinen Überraschung wurde die EP ein Hit und verkaufte mehr als 50.000 Einheiten in wenigen Monaten. Die Nachfrage liess auch in der Folge nicht nach und so drängte Ralph Records The Residents eine zweite EP - Buster & Glen - aufzunehmen, die dann schlussendlich zusammen mit Duck Stab! als LP-Release zu einem Klassiker und großem Verkaufserfolg wurde. Einige Jahre später, zwischen 1981 und 1988 übernahm Night Flight, eine damals populäre Sendung im US-Kabelfernsehen, Video-Clips von The Residents in ihr reguläres Programm auf - insbesondere "Hello Skinny", das legendäre Video zum Duck Stab! / Buster & Glen Album. Für viele Fans der Band war Night Flight der erste Berührungspunkt mit The Residents. Im Jahr 2016 feierte der Sender unter dem Namen Night Flight plus fröhliche Wiederauferstehung als Internet Streaming-Service und bat The Residents anlässlich des 40ten Jubiläums des Programms um einen Video-Beitrag. Da die Gruppe ohnehin an einer Live-Version von Duck Stab! als Teil ihrer 50ten Jubiläums-Tour im Jahr 2022 arbeitete, bot sich Duck Stab! Alive! als eine naheliegende Wahl an, um daraus eine Show für Night Flight plus zu produzieren. Und so begaben sich The Residents unter der Leitung von Regisseur John Sanborn und Kameramann Frazer Bradshaw vom 19. bis 21. Mai 2021 in die 25th Street Studios in Oakland, Kalifornien um die neu ausgearbeitete Performance Duck Stab! Alive! Live im Studio aufzunehmen. 3 Feet High and Rising is the debut studio album by hip-hop trio De La Soul, and was released on March 3, 1989. It marked the first of three full-length collaborations with producer Prince Paul, which would become the critical and commercial peak of both parties. It contains the singles, “Me Myself and I”, “The Magic Number,” “Buddy,” and “Eye Know”. The album title came from the Johnny Cash song “Five Feet High and Rising”. It is listed on both Rolling Stone’s 200 Essential Rock Records and The Source’s 100 Best Rap Albums. When Village Voice held its annual Pazz & Jop Critics Poll for 1989, 3 Feet High and Rising was ranked #1. It was also listed on Rolling Stone’s The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Released amid the 1989 boom in gangsta rap, which gravitated towards hardcore, confrontational, violent lyrics, De La Soul's uniquely positive style made them an oddity beginning with the first single, “Me, Myself and I.” Their positivity meant many observers labeled them a “hippie” group, based on their declaration of the “D.A.I.S.Y. Age” (Da. Inner. Soul. Yall). Sampling artists as diverse as Hall & Oates, Steely Dan and The Turtles, 3 Feet High and Rising is often viewed as the stylistic beginning of 1990s alternative hip hop (and especially jazz rap). 3 Feet High & Rising was chosen by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry for its cultural significance and general excellence.

Ray Charles' self-titled 1957 album was one of the first handful of LPs issued by Atlantic (and was later retitled Hallelujah I Love Her So). As AllMusic reviewer Bruce Elder notes, the album is weighted about three to one in favor of Charles' own compositions, with the hits "Hallelujah I Love Her So" and the pounding, soaring "Ain't That Love," which opens the LP, its raison d'etre.

Charles does just as well with his interpretations of others' work, most notably the ominous, gospel-focused rendition of "Sinner's Prayer" (which offers a virtuoso piano performance, and comes courtesy of the pen of Charles' former mentor Lowell Fulson) and Henry Glover's wrenching ballad "Drown in My Own Tears," which is topped out on each verse by a gorgeous chorus. "Funny (But I Still Love You)" offers a guitar break played in such an understated fashion that it almost doesn't seem so much a part of R&B as it was usually being offered in 1957 as it does a part of Charles' early career output.

The second side of the LP is even better, opening with the title track, a number that is almost too ubiquitous in its various cover versions — the original has a mix of urgency and playfulness that's absolutely bracing, and the album carries this mood forward with "Mess Around," an Ahmet Ertegun-authored piano- and sax-driven romp with Charles at his most ebullient as a singer. "This Little Girl of Mine" offers him in a surprisingly light, almost acrobatic vocal mode, while "Greenbacks" is a knowing, clever cautionary narrative that is almost a throwback to 1940s-style R&B. "Don't You Know" is as salacious a piece of R&B as one was likely to hear in 1957, and "I Got a Woman" closes the record out on a pounding, driving note.

Released in 1960, Giant Steps was a watershed album for John Coltrane, solidifying the saxophone legend's reputation as one of the most influential and innovative musicians in jazz history, as well as delivering jazz to an increasingly mainstream audience, while garnering significant critical acclaim.

Although this was John Coltrane's debut for Atlantic, he was concurrently performing and recording with Miles Davis. Within the space of less than three weeks, Coltrane would complete his work with Davis and company on another genre-defining disc, Kind of Blue, before commencing his efforts on this one.

Coltrane (tenor sax) is flanked here by essentially two different trios. Recording commenced in early May of 1959 with a pair of sessions that featured Tommy Flanagan (piano) and Art Taylor (drums), as well as Paul Chambers — who was the only bandmember other than Coltrane to have performed on every date. When recording resumed in December of that year, Wynton Kelly (piano) and Jimmy Cobb (drums) were instated — replicating the alternate non-Bill Evans lineup featured on "Freddie the Freeloader" on Kind of Blue, sans Miles Davis of course. At the heart of these recordings, however, is the laser-beam focus of Coltrane's tenor solos.

All seven pieces issued on the original Giant Steps are Coltrane compositions. He was, in essence, beginning to rewrite the jazz canon with material that would be centered on solos — enabling the solo to become infinitely more compelling. This would culminate in a frenetic performance style using melodic phrasing that noted jazz journalist Ira Gitler accurately dubbed "sheets of sound."

The Giant Steps chord progression consists of a distinctive set of chords that create key centers a major third apart. Jazz musicians ever since have used it as a practice piece, its difficult chord changes presenting a "kind of ultimate harmonic challenge", and serving as a gateway into modern jazz improvisation. Several pieces on this album went on to become jazz standards, most prominently "Naima" and "Giant Steps."

The Penguin Guide to Jazz selected this album as part of its suggested "Core Collection" calling it "Trane's first genuinely iconic record." In 2003, the album was ranked No. 102 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, 103 in a 2012 revised list, and 232 in a 2020 revised list.

Undeniable music perfection deserves definitive sound and top-notch packaging. This reissue was mastered directly from the original master tape by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound and cut at 45 RPM. From the wreckage of Free came Bad Company, the English hard rock supergroup fronted by singer Paul Rodgers and featuring his drummer bandmate Simon Kirke, Mott the Hoople guitarist Mick Ralphs, and King Crimson bassist Boz Burrell. Peter Grant, who managed the rock band Led Zeppelin, also managed Bad Company until 1982.

The group's eponymous 1974 album debut decidedly proves the band is proudly not progressive — the details make a difference, as do the pastoral acoustics of the closing "Seagull" — reducing their rock 'n' roll to a strong, heavy crunch; compare "Ready for Love," a tune Ralphs brought over from Mott the Hoople, to the original to see how these quartet members keep their heads down as they do their business. They have sold 20 million RIAA-certified albums in the U.S. and 40 millon worldwide.

The self-titled debut album was recorded at Headley Grange, Hampshire, in Ronnie Lane's Mobile Studio. The album reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in the U.S, and No. 3 on the U.K. Albums Chart, spending 25 weeks on the U.K. charts. The album has been certified five times platinum in the U.S., and became the 46th-best-selling album of the 1970s. The song and Steppenwolf's version of Hoyt Axton's "The Pusher" figured prominently in the 1969 counterculture cult film "Easy Rider", and both show up on "Gold's" track list. Two other singles on this stunning album compilation also cracked the Top 10 on the charts: "Magic Carpet Ride" and "Rock Me". "Magic Carpet Ride" was released in 1968 on the album "The Second". It was written by band members John Kay and Rushton Moreve, peaked at No. 3 in the U.S. and stayed on the charts for 16 weeks, longer than any other Steppenwolf song. In between his stints with the James Gang and the Eagles, Joe Walsh tackled his second solo studio album The Smoker You Drink The Player You Get which became his most successful solo outing. The 1973 LP continued the heavy and light rock mix of tracks found on his previous release, Barnstorm.

Several unique features set the debut studio album by folk rock supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash, released in 1969 by Atlantic Records, apart. It's the only album by the band before adding Neil Young to their lineup. The album spawned two Top 40 singles, "Marrakesh Express" and "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes," which peaked respectively at No. 28 during the week of August 23, 1969, and at No. 21 during the week of December 6, 1969, on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The album itself peaked at No. 6 on the U.S. Billboard Top Pop Albums chart. It has been certified four times platinum by the RIAA for sales in excess of 4 million copies.

Instantly lifting the group to stardom, along with the Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo and the Band's Music from Big Pink, the previous year, the album is cited by music reviewers for initiating sweeping changes in popular music. In 2021 the album held the rank of No. 161 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list.

Crosby, Stills & Nash was "the perfect blend of David Crosby's social conscience, Stephen Stills's virtuoso musicianship and Graham Nash's ability to craft the perfect pop melody for radio," writes Rolling Stone, in its review.

The band was brought together after Crosby was fired from The Byrds, Stills's band, Buffalo Springfield had broken up (a band which also featured later member, Neil Young) and Nash's departure from The Hollies. The three decided to form a band after an informal jam led them to discover how well their voices harmonized. Released in May 1969, the band would perform nine of the album's 10 songs at Woodstock, which was the second time they ever did, in August of the same year.

The album features some of CSN's most well known and iconic songs; "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes," "Marrakesh Express," "Guinnevere," "Wooden Ships," "Helplessly Hoping" and "Long Time Gone." This album saw a shift in sound to what was popular at the time — blues based rock, opting for a more folk rock, and sometimes jazz-based sound. It would lay the foundations for the California Sound that would be popularised out of Laurel Canyon in the ‘70s. Artists such as The Eagles, Jackson Browne and Fleetwood Mac would take inspiration from the sound of this record.

He listened to what our Phoenix Mastering® restoration process, can achieve, and made the decision to entrust us with the results of several years of research: he gave us a list of dates and places of the previously unreleased recordings of his grandfather. In Berlin, Moscow and Saint Petersburg, we came across a treasure trove, stunning in terms of both the quality and consistency of Emil Gilels’s playing. We were fully aware that he was one of the greatest musicians of the twentieth century. It was in Amsterdam where at last, we succeeded in extracting this fabulous recital from 1976 at the Concertgebouw – recordings that had fallen into oblivion. We were allotted a studio where we listened to the tapes one by one, we did not utter a word, so overcome were we by the beauty of what we heard.« (F. D’Oria-Nicolas) Considered one of the most important pianists of the twentieth century, he was a pupil of H. Neuhaus. He wins the current Queen Elizabeth Competition in Brussels and takes on an international stature. In a world where being loud seems to be the only ticket for attention, Arve Henriksen has somewhat quietly and without much ado established himself as an important, major player on the European jazz scene. In his 20 years with Rune Grammofon we're counting 11 solo albums (including one for ECM) and 12 albums with Supersilent (including two for Smalltown Supersound), in addition to four albums with Food as well as numerous collaborations, far too many to mention here. During these years he has also performed quite extensively in Europe, in later years being more picky, often preferring more unique venues and locations. Consisting of unreleased material from around ten years back and up until 2019, "The Timeless Nowhere" is not a compilation in the traditional sense, but can still be seen as a career overview including many facets of his work, at the same time portraying an artist on an unstoppable quest for discovery through exploration. Indeed, these are also four individual albums that could easily have justified separate releases, but at this stage in Arve's artistic journey it also made perfect sense to assemble them as a box set. The common denominator is about inspiration drawn from composers, collaborators, new discoveries and more specifically; spontaneous interaction with other musicians without other purposes than the music itself. No talk, no demands, no intentions, no explaining; just music in a timeless nowhere. "Captured Under Mountainsides" points to the wild landscape scenery of the area where Arve grew up in the western part of Norway; overwhelming and often strikingly beautiful, but also isolated and with a sense of melancholy. "Acousmograph" is Arve on his own, inspired by compositions and musicians, more experimental in nature and partly based on sketch recordings in odd locations. "Cryosphere" is a co-production with long time collaborator Jan Bang re-modelling material from a series of evolving concert performances. "Towards Language - Live at Punkt" could be seen as a departure from Arve'...

Born Herman Poole Blount in Alabama during 1914, Sun Ra first emerged on the Chicago jazz scene during the late 1940s. One of the great avant-garde composers of his generation - leading the way on piano, organ, and (eventually) synthesizer - beginning in the mid-1950s and lasting until his death in 1993, led the Arkestra, a band through which a near countless number of important artists passed and collaborated with, and many remained for the duration of their careers, notably Marshall Allen, John Gilmore and June Tyson. Known for their wild costumes and theatrics, Ra’s eccentric image and claims that he was from Saturn was deeply political, imagining an alternate social order, history, and future for African Americans that rests as a pioneering force in the Afro-Futurist movement.

While Sun Ra and his Arkestra can best be located within the broader movements of avant-garde jazz - particularly as innovators of free and spiritual jazz in their evolving forms - the composer was notoriously hard to pin down on creative terms. He was a visionary titan whose work traversed nearly half of the 20th Century, continuously pushing the idiom of jazz at every turn, ingesting and incorporating the entire history African American music - the blues, R&B, soul, gospel, ragtime, hot jazz, swing, bebop, free jazz, and fusion, etc. - into his work, without any division or hierarchy, producing roughly 100 full lengths bear his name, beginning with 1957’s “Jazz By Sun Ra Vol.1”, and stretching well beyond his death in 1993. Despite how much was captured and released, remarkably, rare and previously unheard recordings continue to emerge and amaze.

Recorded live at Teatro Giulio Cesare on March 28, 1980, comprising an astounding 27 compositions, including the highly celebrated “Astro Black”, “Mr. Mystery”, “Romance of Two Planets”, “Space Is the Place”, “We Travel the Spaceways”, and “Calling Planet Earth”, over six vinyl sides. High among the greatest live gigs by the Arkestra captured on tape, carefully mastered by Matt Bordin at Outside Inside Studio, “Live in Rome 1980” is a near perfect snapshot of the band’s versatility and range, including many of their most notably and famous songs, as well as striking renditions of the Horace Henderson penned Benny Goodman number “Big John’s Special”, Fletcher Henderson’s “Yeah Man!”, and "Limehouse Blues”, displaying Ra’s willingness to address and rework the entire, diverse history of jazz in a single go.

Heard in its totality, perhaps what makes “Live in Rome 1980” most striking is the way in which the concert plays out. Roughly the first half encounters the band locked in some of the most out-there, free jazz fire that can be imagined, weaving a startling sense of interplay and furious energy into a brilliant tapestry of writhing sonority, the likes of which were only really achieved by this band. The second half, with only moments of exception that return to the furious energy of the first, is very different affair, easy toward the vocal standards, led by June Tyson’s vocals and the joyous collective chanting of the band, for which they have become so widely celebrated, threading the sounds of off-kilter big band swing with heavy grooves and imagines of outer space.

Miles Davis created just one studio album with his original sextet: Milestones. And he made every moment count. Pairing with Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones, Davis not only laid the groundwork for the modalism that immediately followed but tailored a genuine modern-jazz masterwork laden with performances among the most explosive of his distinguished career. Sandwiched between the more famous 'Round About Midnight and the epochal Kind of Blue, Milestones remains a seminal work of art.

Sourced from the original master tapes and pressed on dead-quiet SuperVinyl, Mobile Fidelity's numbered-edition 180g LP grants each musician their own space amid broad soundstages. Afforded the benefits of a nearly non-existent noise floor and supreme groove definition, this vinyl reissue doubles as a time machine back to the February-March 1958 recording sessions.

Colors, shapes, and dimensions appear in the manner that resembles what you'd glean from behind a studio control room's window. Davis' burnished trumpet is rendered in three-dimensional perspective and seemingly coaxes the band to play with unburdened zest. Coltrane's trademark saxophone teems with lifelike tonality and images with specificity; his solos work in tandem with and against the driving rhythms. Garland's swaggering piano lines? Visualize the keys as he hits full stride, the chords and fills slithering around skeletal frameworks.

Inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and selected as a "Core Collection" record by the Penguin Guide to Jazz, Milestones is as famous for its title track – widely considered ground zero for modalism and bolstered by Jones' hallmark "Philly Lick" rim shot – as the players that produced it. The launching pad for many of Davis' improvisational flights, the album teases the explorations Coltrane would soon chase. Davis' own solo work broaches territories that far exceed what he had done in his bop-rooted past. Every song is a highlight.

Take the bravado "Dr. Jackle," featuring a hot-foot pace and bebop strains, or "Sid's Ahead," which continues the album's blues theme while juggling edgy harmonics and inside-out structures. On "Billy Boy," distinguished with an arco bass solo from Chambers, Garland gets a turn in the spotlight and channels the openness practised by one of his heroes, Ahmad Jamal. Even more instructive is the band's reading of Dizzy Gillespie's "Two Bass Hit." Three years removed from the version Davis and company recorded for the trumpeter's Columbia debut, this interpretation demonstrates the extent to which the group had jelled in a relatively short amount of time.

Then there's "Straight, No Chaser," the definitive rendition of Thelonious Monk's signature piece. Coltrane's marbled playing pulls at the tune's borders, Adderley takes liberty with solos, and Davis dances around his mates, at one point quoting "When the Saints Go Marching In" while demonstrating his knowledge of tradition and casting an eye towards the future.

About that future. Garland already had one foot out the door during the Milestones sessions to the extent Davis spells him on "Sid's Ahead." Jones would stick around for a bit longer but soon plot his exit. History proves Davis navigated the changes with visionary aplomb. Yet the chemistry, excitement, and beauty the sextet achieves on Milestones cannot be overstated. This reissue helps put the album in proper perspective – and presents the music the fidelity it deserves.

After several years of requests from the vinyl loving community, Music Box Designs is proud to present our latest vinyl storage line: The 7 inch vinyl storage Music Box.

And, in honor of the late Pete Shelley we have decided to refer to these beauties as ‘Singles Going Steady.’

In 1949, RCA Victor unveiled its latest invention, the 45 rpm 7 inch Vinyl Record in an effort to compete with Columbia Records newly developed 33 1/3 12 inch disc. Time constraints aside, what RCA unleashed on the world of recorded music was the perfect vehicle for the burgeoning youth market, who could now easily own the latest musical dispatches from their favorite artists, in a convenient and affordable medium.

Seventy years later, the 45 or 7 inch record has remained a staple of the vinyl collecting community. From highly valuable pressings of the world’s greatest songs to rare independent recordings of artists utilizing the format to put out “non-album” outtakes or live recordings as a gift for their fans, the 7 inch collector is a dedicated and specialized breed and they deserve to store those precious discs in the best way possible. And as with our 12 inch Vinyl Storage boxes, we have designed what we believe to be the most beautiful, and durable 7 inch storage available.

Our 7 Inch Vinyl Storage Music Box has been constructed of the same edge glued Oak of our 12 inch Music Boxes. The 45 degree mitered joints have been reinforced by an internal series of wooden dowels for even greater structural integrity. The internal dimensions of the Music Box have been carefully considered to allow for a perfect fit of single records and even some 7 inch box sets. The tops of the records do not stick out, so it is possible to stack the boxes on top of each other, and the convenient handles make moving our 7 inch Music Box easy as pie.

Oiled Oak Finish Can hold up to 138 7 inch records.
