In 1994 the Vienna-based project iO from Patrick Pulsinger, Erdem Tunakan, Umberto Gollini and Gerhard Potuznik released a series of 12 inches called Attack, Decay, Sustain and Release on their legendary Cheap Records imprint. While most of the tracks where minimalistic Detroit-influenced Techno, one particular piece stuck out. Claire! Not only for its mid tempo round 110 bpm, but mostly for the mix of jazz chords, a funky sample-based groove and a bone dry 909. Here was a tune bridging the gaps between Techno, Trip Hop and House Music. Shortly after the release of the full album containing all previous 12 inches, Claire was licensed to Mo’Wax Records in London. With an even broader audience it was received in a whole different context and became an instant favorite amongst DJs from different genres around the globe and a stone cold classic which is still loved today.

Joseph Fraioli, a.k.a. Datach'i, returns with eighth album 'Bones'. Released on Venetian Snares' Timesig imprint, 'Bones' features 12 tracks of mind expanding electronica, once again recorded on his custom-built Eurorack modular system. Much like its predecessor, 'Bones' manages to make the most of the possibilities modular systems offer, whilst avoiding their many pitfalls that can often turn such music into little more than a dry academic exercise. Indeed 'Bones' is a remarkably intimate album, written and recorded in the time following his father's death, and reflects this intense period of personal change in Joseph's life. "Creating this music was a therapy of sorts," Joseph recalls. "It was almost like a close friend being there for me, and it's something that I hope others can perhaps utilize in the same way." The connection to his father is something that is reflected not just in the emotional intensity of 'Bones', but in the actual production itself. "My father and I were very close," he explains. "Whilst he was sick with cancer I bought him a guitar as he wanted to learn how to play, just to have something to do while he was getting treated. After he passed away my mother gave me the guitar to have as a sort of memory of him. I had the idea to record some sounds and music on the guitar and load it onto granular sample players on the modular synth so I could make new music from those sounds as a sort of tribute to my dad. You can hear some of those sounds on a few of the tracks here like 'Arrivals', 'Motion in the Living Room' and 'Undimension'." . Even though 'Bones' is about endings and finding closure, it also looks forward to new beginnings. "It was something very much on my mind throughout recording this album," he relates, "ends being beginnings and beginnings being the end. Cycles of time and how time works, it's all reflected throughout the album right down to how the tracks are ordered." Ranging from blissful ambience and guileless, starry eyed melodies, to intricate claustrophobic rhythms that forever sound close to collapsing in on themselves before expanding into bold new patterns, 'Bones' is the work of a producer who, twenty years on from his debut, continues to push the boundaries of electronic music.

Not much is known about the German session musician ensemble Studiogruppe 1 from the ‘70s and ‘80s. It’s believed that the grandfather of one member, known only as V.S., originally soundtracked silent films in theatres - although that hasn’t been proved. Studiogruppe1 never rose to prominence in the heyday of studio groups and library records, but it certainly wasn’t due to lack of trying.

Although it’s unknown who the individual members of Studiogruppe1 were, it’s clear they could find a groove within the machines. It appears the sessions were also engineered by V.S., and there’s plenty of space between the notes, which lends a heady atmosphere of anticipation to the music. Just close your eyes and you will find that the music triggers many scenes from the movies in your mind.

Take the opener Dunkler Sonnenaufgang, for example. Waves lap on the shore line of an alternate Coney Island, while the sound system of an abandoned amusement park plays arpeggios in the distance. Errinungen could complement expansive panoramic time-lapses of natural cycles and rolling clouds. The track Wenn Der Tiefe Schlaf Kommt, might accompany a documentary on REM dream cycles and flotation tanks. Sonnentanz raises the temperature, as act III in every movie narrative should, as protagonists rush to overcome their challenges. Ein Neuer Anfang would perfectly soundtrack the plot twist of any number of thrillers, film noirs, or sci-fi mysteries. Album closer War Alles Nur Ein Traum could supplement slow-motion shots of dawning realization, foreshadowing a betrayal or a cliffhanger.

V.S. and Studiogruppe1 have condensed the evocative sounds of the ’80s into something of an art form. Bringing to mind the lilting melodies and melancholy chord movements of Tangerine Dream, Vangelis or Manuel Göttsching, Studiogruppe1 manage to capture widescreen emotional flash points without the need for celluloid, or barely any visual aid, for that matter. These tracks work just as well in the furnace of your imagination or a dark room filled with dry ice and lasers.

Morning Glory Clouds. Tremendous long cloud collossuses roll above humanity’s heads with an unbelievable speed at the north Australian Gulf of Carpentaria during spring time. This special event is never forgotten by the ones who experienced this huge and very unique spectacle. Most humans tend to forget where their roots really originate. But once in a while nature comes up with new events like this to remind us where we really come from. Our physical bond with this planet will never break, since we all turn into soil as soon as we leave our bodies. To intensify our understanding of it, this compilation series looks into several special nature phenomenas and let various artists of different disciplines make an interpretation with their own picture of the phenomena in their individual creative language. The whole creative concept is based on the principal of the ‚Chinese Whispers‘ game. So Kwasu Tembo (writer and musician) started the whole process with a lyrical text about this phenomenon which was passed on to four visual artists – Dycide, Mtrl, Ohneweil and Polygonia. These artists crafted four auditive masterpieces arising from their visual impression of the digital designs. Synaesthesia is a very powerful tool to grasp coherences which are not easily explained. It can create inner feelings and associations on the observer‘s side, which are much more accurate than any scientific explanation.

iZem «Remixes» is the second episode of the series.

France, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Ireland and finally Portugal. After a musical journey rich in miles traveled but especially in experiences, IZEM (for In Ze Early Morning) found a new creative situation in Lisbon.
In constant connection with lusophone music from South America and Africa, and after Hafa, his first album released on Soundway Records, IZEM has added the second reference to the series of MAXI 12inch EP directed by GUTS on its Pura Vida Sounds label.

First introduced into Les Fères Smith Afrobeat base camp, iZem stole “Ecolo Assiko” from them. How do we get out of here without arousing the vigilance of the Cerbers? By getting rid of his combat suit to put on another outfit: a jerky rhythmic to shake the bodies, brass jewelry and, most importantly, an irrepressible afro-tropical guitar groove. By the time Les Frères Smith find out, "Ecolo Assiko" will have burned every dance floor in his path. With one slogan: “Toujours plus loin, toujours plus fort !” (Always farther, always stronger!)

On the B-side, IZEM is focusing on Guts' newest “L’Origine du Monde”.The adventure in the brass jungle in pursuit, mutates into an atmosphere where the bass drum pulsates over all time. The female voices call for comfort, if not more, in a call and response with a flute heated by the Afro-funk groove and visibly rushed to get serious. It seems to be reciprocal.

Journeyman, DJ, radio presenter, beat raconteur – it’s been hard to keep up with all of iZem‘s movements lately. Often writing music whilst crossing continents, the only place iZem allows dust to settle is in the heart, heat and rhythms of his local-global future sounds.
