This 1986 album by The Primates remain as the only recording ever released by these four 60s r&b and garage fans. Originally published on Greg Shaw's very own Voxx (Bomp! sublabel focused on revival garage/psychedelia) and produced by Shaw himself, this valuable musical document that portraits the essence of the L.A. 80s garage scene, has been out of print for more than 20 years! So we thought it would be a perfect record to reissue as part of our Bomp! reissue series. The Primates were formed in 1984 and cut their teeth at L.A. spots such as the Cavern Club, as part of a growing scene of devoted Nuggets/Pebbles fans, fascinated with 1960s garage punk classics. The core of the band were Brett Miller and Ted Edlefsen, sporting Vox guitars, and Erik Bluhm as front man, with different drummers, mostly Brian Corrigan but then also Eric from Threw the Looking Glass and Gene from The Miracle Workers. The opener 'I Ain't Like You', 'Bad Luck' or the fun cover of Neil Sedaka's 'I Go Ape' reflect the wild, party-driven mood of the entire album, making you wonder how crazy their shows were in the golden era of the L.A. 80s garage scene. Combining originals and versions (check their great take on Q65's 'I Got Nightmares'), "We Are The Primates" remains as a wild, raw, party album that every fan of garage music should own. Munster is thrilled to reissue this essential '80s garage gem as part of a series of releases celebrating Bomp! 50th anniversary. Revival is a folk EP showcasing Annahstasia’s uncompromising vision, recorded live by the artist and her band over a one-week period in a Joshua Tree Airbnb. She sought a DIY recording experience in order to center the ‘’human aspect'' of her music, something she was missing in her previous work — like the less stripped-back collaborative album Sacred Bull she made with Jay Cooper (which led to her opening for Lenny Kravitz throughout Europe in 2019).

‘’Folk as a genre is rooted around the essentials, there’s no fluff, there’s just the expression of your life experience in your standing and the world and your cultural viewpoint,'' Annahstasia said in an interview with VMP. ‘’I’m borrowing aspects from places that I might not even know that are just subconsciously in my space that to me elicit power, strength, this feeling of capability and warmth. All of those things symbolize power to me, so when I’m making my music as a folk artist, my folk music is directionally guided, inspired and motivated by making people and myself feel empowered.''

Each song on Revival, recorded in a single take, is driven by that self-determination and goal of empowerment. As the title implies, it’s a sort of rebirth for the artist, whose name even translates to ‘’resurrection'' in Greek. The result is a stunning and serendipitous project built to stand the test of time.

“It’s difficult to distill the record down to a cohesive idea, because it’s served as a journal for the last 3 years of our lives, but it’s generally an exploration of the different worlds within America. I (Brandon) write most of the lyrics, and as a military kid I moved around a ton. I grew up mostly in a deeply suburban town called Lakewood in Colorado, and eventually moved to the greatest city on earth (New York) where we currently live.

About 50% of the record is an ode to (American) suburban malaise, the pure boredom and sheer sense that life is absolutely pointless and generally grueling. The sports games, the binge drinking, the standardization of everything, the long drives, the fabricated dramas. There’s a sort of simmering to life there, punctuated by the occasional horrifically violent event via overdoses, car crashes, or shootings, and many of the songs are written about those punctuations.

Another 25% is about love, we’ve felt it, you’ve felt it, it’s fun to write about. Generally our songs take a melancholic/fatalistic view of love: the inevitability of its fading, the fear of giving yourself up, the twin shadow of pain within every moment of pleasure.

The rest of it is about life in New York, a city of dreams, propped up by its own legend and its inhabitants desire to transcend beyond themselves and their hometowns. This part is about obsession with success and accumulation, obsession with the unhindered Ego, and its parallels to a broader American capitalism. Like America itself, it is a place with breathtaking highs and humiliating lows; endlessly stimulating yet empty of principle."

Vitesse X’s debut, 2022’s Us Ephemeral, was a tribute to the spiritual vibrations of the club, influenced by ‘90s rave, ambient techno, and Kraftwerk’s Tour de France. But before her time exploring the rhythms of nightlife, though, Vitesse X spent years playing in indie bands in her hometown of New York City. This Infinite weaves the slinking energy of her debut with these scrappy, livewire beginnings. The record is an exercise in anti-perfectionism, a sort of musical purging for the artist that she refers to as a “somatic release.” While writing, she pursued ideas without judging herself too harshly, leaving the songs rough around the edges and foregrounding confessional lyrics. This shift in mindset transported Vitesse X into a flow state, resulting in a powerful collection of wistful and sanguine dream-pop songs—always openhearted and forever unraveling. For Vitesse X, the album encourages the listener to free themselves from ego, as she aims to do. “It’s about trusting my gut,” says Vitesse X. “It feels like a weight was lifted. It says what it needs to say.” Pushing past injustice, the oppressiveness of a capitalist society, rage, and heartbreak, the record captures Vitesse X in the midst of release. Through the act of creation, she argues on This Infinite, we can make a change, both in ourselves and in the world.

The first ever publication of the original soundtrack composed by Alain Pierre for the Belgian cult film Vase de noces, directed by Thierry Zeno in 1974... Limited edition of 400 copies with letterpress sleeve. In memory of Alain Pierre: 1948 - 2024. Co-produced by Sub Rosa and Mydy

Vase de noces was made with very little money. Thierry used 16mm reversal film, utilizing the ends of reels he obtained from friends who worked as TV cameramen. Similarly, I salvaged magnetic tape from my workplace, the Équipe sound studio. Film professionals looked down on him because he filmed everything on his own, without relying on technicians. The remarks became even more disparaging when they saw the quality of the result.

Thierry told me about a certain sequence from his film, and I had the feeling that this music would work wonderfully with that sequence if I slowed it down to the extreme, to the point that it would be unrecognizable. Very rudimentary special effects. I had manipulated music sung by castrati this way for O Sidarta, and he liked it. My suggestion was accepted. (Alain Pierre)
