Heart And Breath: Rhythm And Tone Fields was conceived of and created by multi-instrumentalist and composer Richard Reed Parry of Arcade Fire and world renowned percussionist and composer Susie Ibarra. Parry and Ibarra created an album of time-based pieces by focusing their attention and awareness on the rhythm and tone of their breath and heartbeats, using their pulse to inform the rhythm of their metronome. The compositions that emerged are hypnotic fields of sound that seem to float suspended in time and space, unfolding gently in a manner that is at once intimate and expansive, and which connects the listener to their own most primal, internal body rhythms.

While the global pandemic brought a unique poignancy to the artists’ focus on the universal human sounds, the music they created brims over with gentle, organic rhythm and melody and reflects the deeply introspective and inherently personal moment surrounding its creation.

This is an album that abandons predetermined musical forms and follows its own intuitive body-logic in a way that is beautifully tactile, uncategorizable music. It’s perfect for ambient, relaxing and meditative moments.

The second LP from Oakland’s Candy Whips is a different affair. ‘Les Cigales’ takes its’ sonic cues from the structure of film and TV music from the 1960s and 70s, channelling the influence of film composers such as Francois de Roubaix and David Axelrod, whilst also sitting somewhere between the washed out, sun-soaked sonics of Surprise Chef and Robohands. As the EP unwinds, its narrative reflects a love story, full of longing, melancholy and drama, connecting with the story of Gyptis and Protis – the founding myth of Marseilles – whose love broke convention and welcomed the arrival of foreign people on French soil.

The project follows The Offline’s debut album ‘La couleur de la mer’, released in November 2023, which saw him create his own soundtrack to a film yet to be made. Inducing images of manorial, fog- swept villas at the seas edge, silhouetted sailing boats and cigar-chomping villains attempting to thwart the mission of an imaginary hero, the record is a masterfully composed sonic journey. ‘Les Cigales’ sees him continue to build upon a distinctive sound that moves from dramatic cues to fragile romanticism, incorporating psychedelic spaciness, retro soul and hip-hop sensibilities informed by his extensive record collection.

When Frank Sinatra and producer Quincy Jones met in the studio for the first time in twenty years in 1984 to produce another album together, the music world held its breath. A big band made up of top musicians and prominent guests such as George Benson, Lionel Hampton and Bob James rounded off the meeting between the two entertainment giants. “L.A. “Is My Lady” peaked at #58 on Billboard’s Pop and #8 on the Jazz charts. The quite contemporary, funky title song even made it onto MTV rotation, together with the remaining tracks in a classic swing style he makes one the singer's most popular albums today. The “40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition” has been newly remixed by original sound engineer Larry Walsh. For number 83 in the Brazil 45 series, we pulled out a real treat. It features two tracks from Roberto De Melo Santos. Born in 1949 in Recife (Brazil), and despite a small discography, he is considered among the true icons of Brazilian soul music under his artist alias, Di Melo.

His self-titled debut album from 1975 has long been collectible for its irresistible Brazilian-funk sound, pleasing the Brazilian, B-Boy breaks, funk collectors, and sample hunters alike. With original copies for the album now fetching crazy sums, we felt these tracks needed another moment in the sun for all to enjoy.

For this release we selected two of our favourite cuts from this cult album, ‘Kilariô' and ‘Pernalonga'. Coincidentally these two gems were released on Odeon Records in 1975 as a rare promo campacto (a Brazilian 7", which plays at 33rpm). 'Kilariô' is a pure Brazilian-soul classic. All the right elements gel together, whilst Di Melo works his relaxed vocal magic over the top. ‘Pernalonga', with its catchy guitar and horns intro, loose break-beat drum, has the feel-good factor which some may recognize as one of the samples behind N.A.S.A featuring David Byrne, & Chali 2na's 'The People Tree' from 2009.

Di Melo is still recording to this day, releasing an album with Cotonete on Favorite Recordings in 2019 - a true don.

Brunson’s ‘Intimacy Between Friends’ EP on Rekids Special Projects kicks oﬀ with 'Aminal'. Originally discovered via a 2017 BBC Radio 1 interview between Benji B and Underground Resistance co-founder Mike Banks, ‘Aminal’ was played on the show and subsequently sought out by Matt Edwards for release on RSPX in 2024 as part of the ‘Intimacy Between Friends’ EP.

‘Aminal’ by Brunson is a ten-minute odyssey into atmospheric deep techno. Wiggling acidic synth motifs and warm, radiant pads bring the soul to a tight groove, constantly evolving and allowing you to sink ever deeper into majestic chords which wash over you like rays of sunlight. Brunson’s 'My Friend Ryan' is another classic Detroit sound with machine warmth and energetic drum programming, which all work together to make you move your body while your heart is enriched by its vibrant soundscape.

Brunson released his ﬁrst EP in 2023 via Berlin’s Tresor Recordings but has been active for a number of years before this as a Midwest American and Motor City producer while being the VJ behind Juan Atkins’ Model 500 shows. He now releases the ‘Intimacy Between Friends’ on Radio Slave’s Rekids Special Projects, already supported by artists such as Luke Slater, Laurent Garnier, and Jerome Sydenham.

Singer/Songwriter Juliet Lawson"s album, "Boo", was released on the Sovereign label in the UK in 1972. The album was the confident debut of a young British artist and featured twelve of Lawson"s own compositions.In the same wave of early 1970s English singer-songwriters such as Nick Drake, Vashti Bunyan, Christine McVie and despite being described at the time as "Britain"s answer to Joni Mitchell" "Boo" was to prove her only major label release with limited commercial success.Over the next 50 years the album"s reputation has slowly grown and is today an expensive and collectible item. "Boo" is presented here in its entirety.The first pressing of the vinyl edition of the album also come with a bonus 7-inch single featuring two early demo tracks.
