"In this album I was trying to explore the idea of pop music on PCP. PCP has fantastic lore around it and I think the most fascinating thing about it is that it seems as if many people have had these experiences where they took PCP, it presented them with an alternative reality, and they accepted it without question. It's as if that umbilical cord of knowing that you're high is cut, and the person taking it is fully immersed in the trip. Not only that but from some of the accounts, the alternate reality seems quite twisted and perverse. There are reports of people disemboweling and eating each other, or deciding that the best course of action is self-mutilation or castration, and then emerging from the trip still convinced it was the right choice. Or even the accounts of people gaining superhuman strength and fighting off 5 or 6 cops at once. It seems like there's something quite dark on the other side of that door. So for this album I tried to write what I imagine the pop music of that alternate reality might sound like. What would happen to the sugary sweet, wet dream, corporate sponsored top 40 hits, if we dipped 'em in angel dust and got "wet". What would happen if we slopped all of those fun summer hits into the meat grinder of the PCP reality tunnel, and just pushed them through. I like to imagine an intersection under an overpass in a cyberpunk dystopian future. It's midnight and you can see the neon's from the storefronts on the other side through the thick smog. A modded Ae86 Corolla pulls a left turn and you can hear the music pounding from the sound system as the rubber peels underneath it. As it's drifting through the intersection, smoke pouring out of the tiny gap at the top of the tinted windows, the music pours out of the car like a thick syrup, engulfing us as we stand frozen for a moment as they pass. Leader of the punk-rap awakening, Wu-Lu pulls inspiration from personal hardship and the underrepresented on his latest for Warp entitled 'loggerhead'. Miles Romans-Hopcraft based his artistic moniker on the Amharic word for water, “wu-ha”. True to his fluid sound and nature, he decided to change it to something that felt more liquid. He ended up with Wu-Lu, a name he has been using since 2015. His first record Ginga opened the floodgates to a career that would take him to various places, people, and genres. From breaking bones at skateparks as a teenager, to DJing as one of the original members of Touching Bass, and eventually getting signed to Warp in 2021.

As an artist, Wu-Lu seems concerned with feeling and communicating the full spectrum of human emotion. Throughout his varied discography, he touches on disparate themes and sounds, straddling a divide between blissed-out beats and grungy guitar dirges, and often mixing both into one amorphous, unclassifiable sound of his own.

On ‘'loggerhead'’, Wu-Lu hones his unique sound. On ‘Take Stage’, a despondent spoken word intro opens with sombre strings and underlying bows dragged delicately across them. Then the lights flicker to life on ‘Night Pill’, and the mosh pit with them - the bassline approaches like a hungry shark and the guitars snarl with a homemade 90s grunge energy. This grunge drawl and punk spirit is peppered with dry old-school drum sounds of classic hip-hop, with laid-back beat-oriented tracks are spread amongst those with intermittent growls, scratches, and shrieks. Sonic elements are constantly rearranged and juxtaposed throughout the album, like on ‘South’ where the fluctuating pitch of squealing guitars and screaming vocals is contrasted with the steady flow of Lex Amor.

Listening through the album you are constantly greeted with about-turns, and through the element of surprise and deft use of contrast 'loggerhead' sits at an exciting point in Wu-Lu’s genre-defying artistry.

Wu Tang & Staten Island MC/Producer come together again in new vinyl release Wutang x Remedy.Remedy is a MC/producer from Staten Island, New York who first made his mark with the song "Never Again" off the Wu-Tang Killa Beez' debut album The Swarm in the summer of '98. He eventually made his full-length debut The Genuine Article in the spring of '01 & followed it up with Code Red about 2½ years later. The last we heard from him on his own was when It All Comes Down to This was released in 2010. But as the 12-year anniversary of that approaches in a few weeks, he's enlisting a star studded cast of veterans to be featured on his 4th album. Ghostface Killah tags along for the opener "Modern Day Miracle" working in an occultist loop to verbally abuse anyone who wants to challenge them whereas "Death Defying" with Inspectah Deck finds the 2 over an operatic instrumental talking about choosing whether to kill or be killed. "Sparrow" takes a more soulful route feeling comparing himself to the titular bird leading into Ghostface returning alongside Conway the Machine for "The Pulpit" incorporating some orchestral samples talking about the street life.The penultimate track "Noir Story" is a full-on Killah Priest solo cut with a drumless instrumental & his lyricism on here is a reminder as to why he's this reviewer's 2nd favorite affiliate right behind Killa Sin in terms of lyrical skill, the previous cuts. "Never Again" then ends the album by mournfully paying tribute to those we've lost along the way.If you're a diehard Wu fan like I am, then you're gonna come away from this highly impressed. It's great to hear Remedy completely rejuvenated & he does an awesome job of paying homage to my all-time favorite hip hop group from the guests to the production.

Limited to 300 black copies. A few weeks ago, the first planetary defense test was successfully carried out: the Dart probe diverted the orbit of the asteroid Dimorphos. With this Nasa operation we know, once again, that when we humans play god we are unstoppable, that we are not going to become extinct like the dinosaurs as long as progress makes us move. However, while this space shock was brewing 11 million kilometers away, here, more specifically in Torelló (Barcelona), a disc was being created that is like the Trojan horse of asteroids. Sin has made a crater or is going to do so; we are talking about Meant to collide of Wud. The second album of the band arrives three years after the debut Okeanos (2019), three are also the nuclear components that currently form it (and not the five before) and, again, three are the letters with which the name of the band remains (wud), previously they were called Wood. It seems that many things have changed in three years and that's right, the group has grown while it has been reduced and this new album testifies to that. The eight songs concisely concentrate the soul of the project. Although what they continue to love is the structured edginess of math-rock, they want the work to have punk-rock and pop constantly on the horizon, which makes the computation more digestible for all kinds of ears that like sharp-guitars music. Behind the songs we find Marc Fernández, Aleix 'Jimmy' Vilarrasa and Rai Costa, three friends of Torelló who for the last, almost, two years have been carrying out the recording. A long and arduous process that has gone through different studios, such as Fontderola by Jordi Casadesús and Jordi Torrents, or Lluerna by Èric Fuentes, but above all it has been hatched in their rehearsal room where they themselves have persevered in the attack to record a good part of the instrumental. The trio's bizarre ideas have been grounded with millimeter precision, faithfully capturing the centennial hyperactivism that accompanies them wherever they go. On the one hand, the songs trot lively and directed with a hardcore soul and rounded pop, on the other, if we look a little, we notice how the details of each cut are infinite, that the structures could be applied to the Sagrada Familia, that, in definitely, there is a lot of hard work. That the process has been laborious is also noticeable in the guitarist's lyrics, words spat out with the impatience of someone who doesn't want to waste another minute in the loop of self-destructive thought. Meant to collide is a fight between the two opposite and complementary parts of oneself, and I say two to simplify. Between the adrenaline side that wants to end everything through romantic escape and the other, the one that wants to reconstruct the fragments of memory to heal from serenity. From this very personal dispute comes a more than possible collision which, deep down, is what makes the group's creative drive advance and, above all, what makes the feeling that the songs are alive because they are lived intensely. Are we talking about emotions? Yes, thank God, because there such of this on the album, all the time, even in the instrumental interludes. The dreamy piano of “Barnum’s Circus”, the spectral autotune of “Lost Stars” or the Queens-of-Stoneagian guitar solo of “Cul-de-Sac” are at the service of the emotional magma of the musicians. The influence of highly emotional groups such as Delta Sleep (the English band performed one of the most memorable concerts for the wud crew at Torelló’s Arundo Fest in 2018), Algernon Cadwallader or Faraquet is noticeable. Over the years we are discovering where exacerbated technological progress is leading us: that's right, to collapse. Meanwhile, but, this band warns us that they have already arrived there and that humanity can be taken in abundance from there, in fact, there is nothing more human than collapsing.
