The term 'free jazz' was already in existence – but it had a quite different meaning, namely jazz without paying for an entrance ticket. The album "Free Jazz", however, was intended to lend its name to a quite different style of jazz. 'Free' playing – now this meant that no one was bound to conventions, you could let your imagination run loose. Free jazz gave one the chance to find new rules for every new composition. And it was to be the greatest boost to innovation in the world of jazz. Ornette Coleman’s album from December 1960 stands at the beginning of the free jazz era like a massive portal. Coleman thought big: he brought two quartets into the studio at the same time, both with two wind instruments and no piano, and let them play together for 36 minutes without a break – a collective improvisation. There aren’t any precise themes, although short, fanfare-like motifs do exist in which the winds come together. A continuous dense rhythmic beat underlies the music almost throughout – and the pulse is felt rather than heard. One musician after the other comes into the foreground to improvise, almost like at a jam session. First Coleman, then Dolphy, then the two trumpeters. The other winds, however, never remain silent, then make comments and support one another continually – the energy level is immense the whole time (it was cold in the studio ...). Only when it is the turn of the bass and drum players do the winds remain silent for about eleven minutes. This album is not only a historic caesura, but a truly great experience over and over again.

When stars collide, sparks will fly. At least that's the theory. Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington accepted the invitation to record together with dignity and polite courtesy. While keen to see what this pairing might produce artistically speaking, it was certainly an historic occasion. As the red light went on and the tapes rolled, Duke on piano and Louis on trumpet and vocals, backed by the Armstrong All-Stars began to play. As Ellington hits the keys on a riff that sounds suspiciously like C Jam Blues and Satchmo sings cheerfully 'Baby, take me down to Duke's Place!' the champions are ready to exchange ideas rather than blows. Perhaps unsurprisingly Louis soon emerged from this unique musical gathering as the natural born leader. But all the source material was firmly Ellingtonian. Both men had enjoyed extraordinary careers and were world renowned figures when the idea of bringing them together was first proposed.

It is 1960, Rock’n’Roll has just lost a couple of its protagonists during this and the previous year, the time of the great balladeers has just begun but soon will run out due to the new and exciting beat invasion. In US mainstream the tiki culture has reached a certain peak and is about to collapse but still goes strong and with it comes the so called “exotica” music, a crossover between smooth jazz and swing, Latin grooves, haunting melodies that are rooted in the folkloristic sounds from different parts of this world plus weird sound effects that often create a spooky jungle or dreamy island beach atmosphere. It can even bend your mind that far you would see palm trees growing out of your speakers and witness monkeys and parrots having fun in your room. Eden Ahbez, born in 1908, passed in 1995, a man living an even more consistent dropout and hippie lifestyle way before the movement was born in the mid 60s, a beat poet and composer who wrote the hit tune “Nature boy” that gave Nat King Cole his first big success in 1947, approaches the field of exotica music from a different point of view creating an epic concept album about an utopian society living in peace and harmony on an island far away from the modern western world as we know it. And indeed we find many trademarks of the prototypical exotica music beginning with this relaxed groove combining easy listening swing and Latin patterns, peaceful, dreamy and even transcendental vocal melodies, tinges of folk music from around the world including powerful dances and a whole color palette of mind expanding sounds giving the whole music an even greater depth and width.

There is nothing hurried about this disc. That said, the music is focused and will stretch your mind. Lewis employed masterful melodic improvisers here: Paul Gonsalves, Eric Dolphy, Jim Hall among others. Listen to "Body And Soul" as it builds powerfully and the soloists explore every possible melodic theme, where the quiet power of these master musicians is almost too much to take. Listen to "I Remember Clifford" where the players are essentially the MJQ with Jim Hall replacing Milt Jackson. This set swings, but oh-so-elegantly. Just like Mr. Lewis.

Whether you're an old-time jazz afficionado or new to the genre, this album is essential. In my opinion, Lewis' lovely solo on "Body & Soul" makes his version virtually definitive - 15 minutes of bliss. The rest of the album, particularly "Afternoon In Paris", is at the same level. "Wonderful" is the perfect title for this record.

The rarest of all exotic LPs, like Eden Ahbez but with extra added death. This bizarre, rarely heard masterpiece brings together jazz, ancient manuscripts and a convicted murderer. Issued originally in 1959 it originates from Pheonix, Arizona. The concept behind the recording was unusual - to brings together two unconnected worlds: the jazz genius of Buddy Collette with the academic oriental studies and translations of A.I Groeg. Little can be found of A.I. Groeg, But before the LP was recorded A.I Groeg had translated several Polynesian and Japanese manuscripts. These form the basis of the dark narrations and lyrics across the album. Sublime vocalist Marni Nixon (the voice of Maria in West Side Story) was brought in for two songs and fledgling actor Robert Sorrels (now a convicted murderer) supplied the strangely unsettling and almost otherworldly narration.

This fast and furious orchestral work with piano, which begins with what must surely be the most famous clarinet glissando of modern times, was composed with the intention of presenting as many facets as possible of music from the New World in the short space of around 15 minutes. In his "Rhapsody In Blue" Gershwin wanted to »paint a musical kaleidoscope of America – our enormous melting pot, our typical national traits, our blues, our seething city life«. With this in mind, Leonard Bernstein made a number of recordings of the work and among the many excellent recordings that he made as a conductor or as a soloist, this present version with the Columbia Orchestra, from 1959, is especially of note. Bernstein takes on a double function as conductor and soloist and manoeuvres his way safely and surely through the highly diversified score to create a well-rounded picture filled with hefty orchestral dynamics and finely chiselled solo playing. In Gershwin’s freely composed work the soloist and orchestra do not resort to bombastic shock effects or egomaniac keyboard acrobatics, and so this the work can be described as rhapsodic in the very best sense of the word.
Most fittingly, on the B side there is another freely composed work – the autobiographical sketch entitled An American In Paris. The superb New York musicians paint the impressions of a visitor to the hectic French capital city – that too is the sound of America.

When Miles Davis, the trumpeter (1926-1991), had formed the band in 1955, his colleagues - tenor saxophonist John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones - were not considered jazz-world A-listers. And before conquering his narcotics addiction earlier in the ’50s, Davis had seen his once-promising career go into eclipse. By 1956, however, his sound, especially when muted, was an achingly personal counterpart to the vocals of Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra. Relaxin’ (plus its prestige companions, Miles, Cookin’, Workin’ and Steamin’) reestablished Davis, and elevated his quintet as the gold standard of small groups. This set is called Relaxin’ because of the ballad performances in several different bright tempos. From medium-bounce to crisply up, Relaxin’ remains one of Davis’s sunniest outings, a prime example of one of the outstanding ensembles of the 20th century reaching the summit of their artistry.

180 gram LP. In the late fifties the Chicago-born John Jenkins was an up and coming young alto saxophone player on the New York jazz scene, playing with top jazzmen like Charles Mingus, Donald Byrd, and Hank Mobley, among others.

It looked like he was going to have a long and promising career, when suddenly in the mid-sixties he gave up music altogether and disappeared from the jazz world.

Thankfully, before doing so he recorded several sessions, including two as leader for Blue Note in 1957.

This quintet session (recorded with the all-star rhythm section of Kenny Burrell, Sonny Clark, Paul Chambers, and Danny Richmond) is considered to be the better of the two.

Here Jenkins also gets an opportunity to show off his flair for composition as well, contributing three of the six pieces found on the album ("Motif", "Sharon" and "Chalumeau").

After such a competent start, jazz fans can only mourn the fact that Jenkins didn't continue recording!

With the intention of celebrating the music of Yma Sumac and continuing to spread her legacy, Ellas Rugen Records reissues on vinyl one of the highest points of her career: "Legend of the Sun Virgin", recorded in 1952 in the United States by Capital Records. The production, which she signed with her husband and close collaborator, the composer Moisés Vivanco, reflects the exotic proposal of Sumac, a pioneer in World Music and a true ambassador of Peruvian culture in the world. True to the spirit of this new record company, the vinyl has been carefully edited and it includes unpublished photos from Sumac's personal archive, an informative text written by renowned historian Carmen McEvoy and a state-of-the-art sound remastering. In addition, through the pre-sale, which has already started through BandCamp, collectors will be able to access a limited edition that includes a colored vinyl. With this, Ellas Rugen Records begins its journey with the aim of reclaiming and giving a new life to the great Latin American artists of the second half of the 20th century. In addition to Sumac’s reissue, the label already has its next releases in process, which will focus on iconic singers from Venezuela and Mexico. “Due to the lack of cultural preservation policies and the negligence of small record labels from the 60s, 70s and 80s, a lot of our musical legacy is being lost. While such things are sounding in the world of three minutes, my heart is excited. I created "Short Letter" with the intention of singing pop music that makes you want to listen to it over and over again while rediscovering your favorite music, including the aforementioned songs. says Mai Mishio. ★Artists Profile ■Uyama Hiroto https://roph.net/ He became familiar with music from an early age due to the influence of his uncle, who was also a jazz guitarist. Since ``Letter From Yokosuka'' he has been involved in many nujabes works and has performed with them on numerous live shows. In 2008, he released his first album, ``A Son Of The Sun''. After Nujabes passed away in 2010, he became involved in the production of works such as the ``Luv (sic) series'' and ``spiritual state'', and also participated as an artist. After that, in 2013, he launched roph recordings in order to aim for even more pure music. In 2014, he released his second album ``Freedom of the Son'', which was his first in 6 years since his previous album. In addition to featuring Cise Star, Pase Rock, and Fat Jon, who he has been friends with since his days at hydeout productions, the song is a sequel to his first album. In addition, in 2016, they released their third album "Freeform Jazz", two years after their second album. The content strongly emphasizes the Japanese identity and stands out from previous works as a proposal for a new Japanese Free Jazz, and its originality has attracted not only Japanese but also overseas listeners, such as being featured on Hypebeast overseas. ■Yoshiharu Takeda Fantastic music that expresses fluctuations, flows, and contours. Yoshiharu Takeda lives in Tokyo and is an up-and-coming composer/arranger/keyboard player and music selector. Around 2000, he studied music theory on his own and started producing music by composing and arranging on the piano and keyboard. His first album “Aspiration” released in 2018 received praise from Calm and Kaoru Inoue, and after listening to the album, Soichiro Suzuki (World Standard) fell in love with his talent and released his second album “Before The Blessing” in 2022 from the label . It beautifully expresses the wildness hidden within sophistication and the movement contained in stillness, further deepening the sound world that only Yoshiharu Takeda can create. It has been highly praised by many music lovers.

Summer Eye's big gratitude song "Sankyu" has been released as a 7-inch version! ! The hip, boogie, Latin, and dubby number "Sankyu", which was released on Bandcamp at 3:09:39 p.m. on March 9th, is now available in analog form! !

Last year, after releasing the album "Daikichi", we performed live in various places. Tokyo, Hokkaido, Sendai, Tochigi, Gunma, Ise, Matsumoto, Fukui, Osaka, Nagoya, Hiroshima, Oita, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Hyogo, Matsue, Naha, there may be more. I also went to Bangkok.

The people who invited me and the people who came to listen to my music generally had the same ideas as me, and I felt like they were a bit on the outskirts of society. But when I thought about it, I wondered how many people actually fit into the world. I feel like everyone is doing it in different places.

The Clash has a song called "Rudie Can't Fail." Rudy is a Jamaican slang term for a juvenile delinquent. There's also a song by The Specials called "A Message to You, Rudy." The original song was sung by Dandy Livingstone. Both songs are not boasts or praises for delinquents, but are an encouragement to the rude boys to "get serious."

As I continued my journey, I thought, ``The people who are involved with me now could be called the current Rudy.'' I want to write a song for these beloved compatriots right away that says, ``Do it as a master! Thank you! See you again!'' I'll be 39 years old soon. It was released on March 9th and sold for 390 yen, with T-shirts also selling for 3,900 yen...Wouldn't it be interesting if the title was of course the song "Sankyu"? Isn't it funny? Based on that idea, I made a demo around the latter half of January this year, and slowly completed it.

While playing around with my favorite Elektron digitakt, I came up with the breakbeat that became the basis for the song. I applied spring reverb to the snare to make it look like a DUB. The intro grooves with guitar and horns, and then the singer appears. I would be very happy if you could dance with the main character, who is a little embarrassed about turning 39 years old.

The jacket is by Maeda. It's still the best!

The release date is my Summer Eye birthday! The day before, on the 12th, we have decided to have a one-live show at Shibuya Quattro! I also go on tour. We will also visit Kyoto and Nagoya. With a band, of course. Please look forward to it.

While the first shows the New York musician CLIP, the second depicts an excerpt from the dossier 'Clockwatchers', which deals with the future of work in the context of the looming climate crisis. One of the two covers is selected at random when purchasing.

For Magazine Issue 10, Carhartt WIP spoke to Nourished By Time from Baltimore, Congolese sound and performance artist Cõvco, Brooklyn-based artist Diamond Stingily as well as skater Maria Navarro. In Cameroon, the Carhartt WIP editors observe how Jail Time Records is redefining how a label can function and in Taipei we meet Grillz artist Shiningmaker. Meanwhile, in Reading, Cieron Magat documents teenage boredom in England's inner cities. In addition, artist Anthony Coleman invited Carhartt WIP into his warped world populated by pop culture references, and with photographer Robert Leblanc, Carhartt WIP traveled to the most remote corners of the USA.

Reissued for first time on vinyl the demo-tape "…Al Servicio" by the Chilean Punk/Oi! band Ocho Bolas! Since its formation in the late '80s, Ocho Bolas has been an emblem of the Punk scene in Valparaíso (Chile). The band was formed in 1988 and they gave their first concert that same year at the Mauri Theater (Valparaíso) when the Punk scene was still a resistance to the fierce Pinochet dictatorship. A year later in 1989 they recorded their first demo-tape "…Al Servicio" which contained 8 songs that were released on cassette by the band themselves (today it is almost impossible to find copies of that first edition). "…Al Servicio" is the closest thing in that corner of the world had to the spirit of the first Hardcore/Punk with direct lyrics and enormous honesty, without any pretension other than to shout about what bothered them and what was different a lot to what was done in Santiago at that same time, both in terms of lyrics and music. Ocho Bolas were much more aggressive and direct than other bands of the time. Already in 1991, they recorded their best-known 12” through the German label DIM Records. 1000 copies were pressed of the Mini-LP "Trabajo Duro" which also included a version of Cock Sparrer converted into “Yo Quiero a Mi País”. But that is another story… Deluxe edition with gatefold cover and insert including lyrics, cuts and old photos. For the EU version of the album 300 copies have been pressed on black vinyl and 100 on baby blue vinyl (this colour version includes an A2 poster as extra).
