Rhythm Section International, the impossible-to-define label founded in South East London by Bradley Zero in 2014 has reached the ripe old age of 10 years. Funny thing is, it feels like it could have been almost double that. It’s hard to imagine the Landscape of the London music scene without this foundational force whose influence is felt more than ever.

With this special anniversary release, the label takes stock at this milestone to present a compilation in 3 parts: Past, Re-imagined AND Future: honouring the labels tradition of always paying homage to what has come before while setting sights firmly forwards.

With 100-odd releases in their extended back catalogue covering every imaginable style and boasting influence in every inhabited continent on earth, it’s been quite a decade for the independent label, which began on a shoestring budget with funds made via the now legendary Rhythm Section pool hall parties in Peckham.

From humble beginnings to an era defining output - few would have predicted the slow and steady rise of the imprint and the impact it has had on generations of Dj’s, musicians and listeners - at home and abroad.

Spanning 6 discs and 30 tracks, the compilation begins by taking us on a walk down memory lane and presenting one track from each year of the labels output - highlighting some forgotten classics from the archives over the first 2 discs. For discs 3 & 4, the label invited it’s stable of artists to pick a track from the back catalogue to re-imagine in their own style. This process resulted in some incredibly playful contributions from the likes of Ruf Dug, Session Victim and Private Joy - whose playful reinterpretations add new depth to old material.

Finally, the last 2 discs are entirely new material for 2024, carrying the torch of the previous Shouts compilations - whose sole aim is to shine light on new music from emerging artists

Releasing now for well over a decade - Neue Grafik: known to friends as Fred, has successfully transplanted from Parisian rookie to one- man London Institution. Beginning as a solo producer and DJ,Fred spread his wings upon relocating to South London - at first with his Neue Grafik Ensemble and later with his now iconic twice-weekly Orii Jam - the latter of which has given agency to an entire new generation of musicians; spawning an aesthetic, nurturing a unique sound and becoming a launchpad for countless artists.

Dalston Tape Volume 1 is Fred’s attempt to fall back in love with beatmaking - taking it back to the roots of where the project began. I say “attempt” because he’s simply learnt too much and made too many friends along the way to make a mere DIY beat tape. Since his early MPC-led productions on Parisian label, Beat X Changers, Fred has learnt to play the keys to a concert hall standard, he has become proficient in double bass and built up a dense network of collaborators who he has composed, recorded, engineered and produced for both at home in SE London and in the iconic Total Refreshment Centre Studios in Dalston.

This experience adds unavoidable dimensions to his toolbox - resulting in something more akin to a miniature-magnum-opus than a simple beat-tape.

Yes, we hear the influences of Pete Rock, Mad Lib, J Dilla and Al Dobson Jr but we also hear the musicality of D’Aneglo, James Blake and live contributions from an ever growing army of young graduates of the Orii School.

Musical maverick Mark de Clive-Lowe returns to his roots with a new electro-acoustic record ‘Dreamweavers’, displaying his talent as a pianist and composer in partnership with creative collaborators bass player Andrea Lombardini and drummer Tommaso Cappellato. The two Italians have been a consistent presence on Mark de Clive-Lowe’s European tours for several years now, and it was during a road trip from Italy to Switzerland that Lombardini and Cappellato envisioned producing an MdCL album themselves. ‘Dreamweavers’ reflects on and celebrates the sounds that de Clive-Lowe grew up loving and finding inspiration in – from Sakamoto’s meditative melancholy and Ahmad Jamal’s soulful playfulness, to the rhythms of broken beat, boom bap and global rhythms. With the Italian rhythm section in empathetic support from start to finish both in their playing and producing, de Clive-Lowe embraces new found freedoms on ‘Dreamweavers’.

Japanese producer Boogie Mason pays homage to the LA Beat Scene with slooped samples, swung grooves, and MPC cuts that will make head-nodders out of rhythm skeptics. These 10 instrumental tracks weave a tale of reverence for the no rules, unquantized ethos that took Los Angeles beatmakers by storm in the early 2010s. Geared toward the inquisitive listener, Bonsai is the perfect companion to a smoked-out sunrise or a solo walk through Tokyo’s back alleyways.

“Nostalgic, soulful and, of course, boogie-woogie.” That’s how Belgian DJ producer Boogie Belgique (aka Oswald Cromheecke) describes the enticing combination of styles and sources from different decades that make up his music. Taking vintage inspirations, most notably from swing and jazz eras, and merging them with contemporary beats and textures is the young producer’s forte. This is pleasingly evident on Volta, the latest Boogie Belgique album for the Cold Busted label. “Jungle Law” gives a glimpse into Boogie Belgique’s sonic palette. Tough hip hop beats and funky live guitar follow an intro of jungle ambience as a trumpet presents the melody. Soon some swingy big band jazz enters the song in an almost ghostly manner, while the insistent beat keeps the dance floor moving. Album opener “Go Slow” shows a different side to the coin giving the listener an uptempo broken beat rhythm, some bouncy bass guitar, snippets of string loops, and a lovely, forlorn vocal line that echoes the past. It’s a beautiful concoction, and Boogie Belgique delivers on many aspects of this style throughout his eleven track album. Volta is a satisfying trip in an aural time machine.

Another quickstrike from this damn fresh new label straight outta the Kiezes of Berlin. Each volume is dedicated to the Kiez (hood) and beats of a contemporary beatsmith which equals KEATS. After the much loved Volume 1 (Moabit) by Figub Brazlevic Q-Cut steps up to the plate an delivers a totally different take.
This one is called ‚Kaiju Dugu‘ and is not exactly dealing with his neighborhood (called Kiez) itself but the arrival of giant monsters (Kaiju) in his hood. The festivities (Dugu) surrounding this arrival give the inspiration to the dark soundscape of this Keats issue. It is obscure, gloomy and challenges the brain with twisted rhythm patterns, somwhere between, beneath or besides Madlib, El-P or Flying Lotus. Hundreds of records, a sampler and occasionally a Microkorg are the tools of choice, the ‚Kaiju Dugu‘ illustraion is by Q-Cut as well, the fresh frame is provided by V.Raeter as usual and Donald & Rave keep the Keats dropping, so what?!

"Lo-Fingers of Jazz Bap" is the second solo album we've released this year by Ukrainian beatmaker Raiges Cano, which was created by classical methods of sampling delicious Jazz and Funk compositions, all this is harmoniously intertwined with rich bass parts and analog synthesis, while, as before, the rhythm continues to keep explosive Boom Bap drums.

Ragoo Records is proud to welcome the outstanding DJ, producer and record collector Biga for Rgt07, the seventh installment of the cassette series curated by the label. "Meltin' Brain Loops" is a dope collection of beats composed in the scorching late May and early June of 2022. These 23 tracks are the result of a couple of weeks of studio time that Biga dedicated specifically to the rhythms. As the producer directly explains, "using exclusively an MPC, I developed the tracks starting right from the drums. I wanted the drums and bass to have a certain kind of groove, only inserting the samples later, just for the joy of studying and for the fun of twisting my workflow out of the comfort zone." Noh often revolves around themes of life, so with this album the Fiendsh alter-ego takes on the role of the Hayashi of the young beat-producer’s life. The album’s sounds are introspective and rich, combining deep rhythms and warm melodies. Sometimes a hint of Fiendsh’s Thai culture drops in, but mostly the influences are straight from the well of hip-hop, soul, and jazz classics.

In a repeatedly rephrased metaphor of vinyl archaeologists digging for samples and re-constructing music from tiny pieces and fractions of long lost sounds, Weedy of 40 Winks is actually a rare example of this image being executed to perfection. Kill Your Darlings brings together a unique concept where Dutch producer Kid Sublime samples and flips records which are then interpreted by Amsterdam-based band of the moment Radiohop.

Operating within the same local scene, it didn’t take long for Radiohop and Kid Sublime to cross paths. Hot off the press that is the Conservatory of Amsterdam, the former set out to dominate the local underground jazz scene, playing and producing together, sitting in with other bands and frequent visitors of club nights and concerts. The latter has been cheffing up records on a consistent basis for over two decades. Meeting each other at those concerts, they were quick to turn towards the studio to align thoughts: too many good phrases, pockets, and progressions.

Kill Your Darlings is a project that probably a bag full of producers and bands dream of doing, yet we still do not see enough of. Luckily for Kid Sublime and Radiohop, they managed to succeed in conceptualizing this format."

New listeners can thrill to the punchy uptempo breakbeat swing of album opener “Love In Your Eyes,” the worldly trip-hop excursion of “Broken Mountain,” “Swing Thing” and its familiar cut-ups mixed with hip hop attitude, and the infectious contemporary groove of the title track. You have to know how to move away from the rich, strong and noisy streets, if you want to discover another Havana. A Havana far from the tourist circuits and preconceived images. A Havana where one discovers bucolic, but hard and stripped too after slow journeys in the crowded buses, a Havana with which Al Quetz maintains a passionate history since more than fourteen years.

Installed in one of those neighborhoods that can only be reached by going deeper into the alleys, from the open window of the studio comes the sound of banging drums and thumping bass. The sound reaches the streets on which the day rises.

The place wakes up in a growing tumult, with some rare engines coughing, conversations under the windows, songs of the street vendors , an urban ballet sets up as the sun darts its rays. Far from the musical clichés with percussions and horns, Cuba is an island bombarded with influences that one discovers. An island which vibrated for the jazz, the soul, the psychedelic rock , from the waves coming from the Caribbean to those of the bulky neighboring ogre. A musical flowering as varied as abundant that the glorious post-revolutionary label Areito has on thousands of recordings, and that Al Quetz has designated as the sole source of his samples to compose Habanologia.

From the ambiences that punctuate the local daily life caught by his samplers, he let the melancholy infiltrate his hip hop beats, the nostalgia melting in the depths of his grooves. Nostalgia in the Cuban air, even during moments of intense laughter, which never totally disappears.

Habanologia restores these moments when the song of the birds has extinguished those of the cars. Where, sitting on a doorstep, we comment on the life of the neighborhood, we watch the women's swaying at eye level. The whole day if necessary, the coffee at one peso, after a certain hour, which leaves its place to the Planchao rum. Wandering through its streets where a chance encounter can itself bring others and lead to the essence of the habanera life. From Regla, after a short trip on the bus-boat that crosses the bay, savor the end of the day, observe the capital from afar, let the nocturnal insects ensure some arrangements and drift towards mysterious horizons, bringing to the contemplation of the place and the moment.

On their debut album "Neighbours” the German / Danish Duo Frowein Pedersen infuse a jazzy sound with elements of Hip Hop, World Music, and 90's Trip Hop. Combining loops, samples, and scratches with a wide range of both traditional and quirky instruments, they have created an eclectic sound floating from positive and energizing vibes to more moody and experimental moments.

Cold Busted and Polish beat-master Emapea come together to deliver a deft slab of seven-inch wax. Four tracks that slip and slide through a sonic village of tough rhythms and captured samples — that's Smuggling Town. Emapea goes 'meta' on the first track as "7 Inch" is a crafty ode to the beloved vinyl format over a boom-bap soundtrack. "True Fam" follows on a jazzier tip, as pianos, horns, and a drum loop march take on a laid-back vibe. Flip the wax for the title cut which feels suitably like a city street at night, covert hijinks in progress. The record closes with "Takeover," carefully raising the beat intensity as keys, flute hits, and an ominous atmosphere raid the stereo field.

Pie Eye Collective has been a part of the Albert’s Favourites family for a little while, working with Hector Plimmer and Scrimshire on studio and live performances, he has also played alongside Emma-Jean Thackray and And Is Phi. Pie Eye Collective is the solo project of sound scientist and explorer Matthew Gordon. While at its heart electronica, Gordon creates an organic collage of influences and evocative noises, even drawing from jazz and soul music. Time signatures and rhythms, sometimes hard to pin down, only lead to a more hypnotic sense of being afloat in a sea of harmonics and strangely familiar musical memories. It is music that wants you to completely free yourself and let it move through you.
