Trailblazing instrumental synth pop experiments created to soundtrack Japan’s booming 1980s cartoon and comic industries. The brightly futuristic instrumentals on this collection reflect the mindset of composers and musicians who believed in a technological future where everything was possible.

In the late 1980s Japan experienced a brief but heady period where societal changes combined with new-found wealth to open up a world of possibilities. A huge influx of cash - artificially created by slashed interest rates after an agreement with the US to weaken the dollar relative to the yen - resulted in the inflation of real estate and stock market at a rapid pace. While the economic bubble it created was unprecedented and impossible to sustain, for a while money was in plentiful supply.

The musical genre City Pop reflected the aspirations of the country’s booming leisure class. Video games flourished with Nintendo's 1983 launch of their Family Computer (or FamiCom). Studio Ghibli was founded 1985 to later became one of the most famous and respected animation studios in the world, and Anime and Manga were established as major forms of entertainment for all generations of the Japanese public.

Music was no mere footnote to the anime and manga boom: the two forms of media often went hand in hand, and not simply through the presence of background melodies. With generous budgets available, even two-dimensional static manga comics could be released with an accompanying soundtrack of original music known as an ‘Image Album’.

Composer and arranger Kazuhiko Izu was one such beneficiary of this open budget approach. Written to accompany artist Katsuhiro Otomo’s manga comic Domu, the composer and arranger took advantage of the world-leading (and wallet-busting) Japanese synthesiser technology available at King Records’ fully equipped studio. Featured on this compilation, A3: Act 2 Scene 26 reflected the story’s sci fi themes with a blazingly futuristic yet warmly funky slice of synth pop that presents a joyful celebration of synthesisers and their seemingly endless possibilities.

Kan Ogasawara was another composer who made early mastery of the litany of synthesisers, drum machines and sequencers that had become available. Two tracks written to accompany the 1985 period manga Yume No Ishibumi are featured here; Honowo’s experimental electronic textures add spice to a jaunty electro pop melody that recalls the Rah band’s 1983 hit Messages From Stars; the jazz-tinged Utage rounds out Ogasawara’s shimmering synth textures with beautifully crafted backing from legendary musicians Yuji Toriyama (guitar), Pecker (percussion) and Jun Fukamachi (piano).

Before becoming one of the pioneers of Japanese Kankyo Ongaku (Ambient Music), Takashi Kokubo worked on the proto techno track Kiki (Jungle At Night). It was put together for the 1984 anime film Shonen Keniya (Kenya Boy) using some of the most expensive music technologies available at the time. This Africa-Inspired dance track offers a contemporary parallel to the early techno music that young Detroit based producers were then creating using cheap Japanese Roland drum machines and synthesisers.

This is the first compilation of Japanese anime and manga soundtracks curated by Kay Suzuki and Rintaro Sekizuka from Vinyl Delivery Service (a Tokyo based online record shop which also operates in East London's renowned wine and hifi shop Idle Moments). With a cover by artist Kazuki Takakura and two pages of liner notes, this vinyl only compilation of music never before released outside of Japan, captures a vital aural snapshot of an era whose forward-thinking sounds went hand in hand with cutting edge technology.

Thom Yorke’s Suspiria (Music for the Luca Guadagnino Film) is released on XL Recordings. Suspiria consists of 25 original compositions written by Thom specifically for Luca Guadagnino reimagining of the 1977 Dario Argento horror classic. The album is a mix of instrumental score work, interstitial pieces and interludes, and more traditional song structures featuring Thom’s vocals such as Unmade, Has Ended and Suspirium, the album's first single featuring the melodic theme that recurs throughout the film and its score.

As scoring a horror film presented Thom with altogether new challenges and opportunities, Suspiria stands apart from any of his other work. Piano / vocal ballads, Krautrock-esque modular synth work inspired by the film’s Berlin 1977 setting, multilayered vocals, and melodies that convey terror, longing and melancholy combine to create a chaotic yet cohesive musical spell.

Suspiria was written and arranged by Thom Yorke, recorded and produced by Thom and Sam Petts-Davies. The album also features the London Contemporary Orchestra and Choir, Noah Yorke on drums on Has Ended and Volk, and Pasha Mansurov on solo flute on Suspirium.

Original Motion Picture Soundtrack / 140g. My Little Pony: A New Generation galloped its way onto Netflix with critical acclaim 9/24/21 and the music is an integral part of the film. The film earned the #1 spot in the Kids section on Netflix in 86 markets globally and the #1 spot for all movies regardless of genre/demographic in 20 countries. The first week of release, the soundtrack amassed over 25,000 Shazams and 3 million streams across DSPs. Its first vinyl release, on opaque purple vinyl, is for RSD Black Friday 2022.

The soundtrack features seven original songs varying across genres, with pony characters voiced by Vanessa Hudgens, Kimiko Glenn, James Marsden, and Sofia Carson. Original songs include “It’s Alright,” written and produced by Parisi and performed by teen heartthrob Johnny Orlando, and “Together” written and produced by Aaron Pearce and performed by Callie Twisselman. Ryan Ulyate (Tom’s long time engineer and producer) has remixed the audio, and the song selection is designed to work as aTom PettyAnd The Heartbreakers album, rather than a soundtrack album. Four unreleased tracks have been added; the rocker “105 Degrees” (written by Petty), a cover of JJ Cale’s “Thirteen Days”, “One of Life’s Little Mysteries” (another Petty original), and an instrumental (“French Disconnection”) in the same vein as the instrumentals on the original album. An extended version of “Supernatural Radio” is also included.

The new title is a reference to one of the stand-out tracks on the album, for which there will be a video. The new album will have brand new artwork, and this version will replace the existing physical versions of "She’s The One."

Falcom Sound Team jdk has taken great care to give the soundtrack to Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes a unique identity in comparison to all of Nihon Falcom’s other numerous PC-88 offerings.

Mastered from entirely new recordings captured specifically for this release we are excited to be sharing this underappreciated piece of Nihon Falcom’s music history soundtrack with you for its first release on vinyl record!

This is another, after "Ultraviolet" collaboration project of the AXN Polska, U Know Me Records and the artist - Wojtek Urbański. The soundtrack for the Rysa series with Wojtek's original music will premiere on the 9th April. "The music for the Rysa series is a combination of the world of electronics, modernity with traditional instruments and folk accents. On one side we have synthesizers, deep bass and wide spaces, characteristic of electronic music and close to my musical style. In opposition to these elements, however, I used traditional instruments such as hurdy-gurdy, pipes, flutes and strings" says Wojtek Urbański. "I wanted the duality of this music to reflect the struggles and double life of the main character of the series. She lives in a certain suspension, between the 'day' world which she knows and remembers, but also the 'night' world which happens beyond her consciousness. Through music, I tried to convey the character of both these worlds, touching very dark and heavy emotions in one of them. I have invited an expert of traditional music, Sebastian Wielądek (hurdy-gurdy, pipes, flutes) and the outstanding violinists Stanisław Słowiński and Agnieszka Świgut to record these works. We return to Capcom’s classic ’90s output with this double LP for the Street Fighter Alpha 2 arcade soundtrack.

The composition team includes Syun Nishigaki, Setsuo Yamamoto, and Tatsuro Suzuki.

For the 30th anniversary of the legendary SNK Corporation’s Neo-Geo, Wayô Records is proud to present this new complete edition of the Magician Lord soundtrack in both vinyl and CD digipak formats, featuring a new illustration by Eisuke Ogura! This iconic game has been released in 1990 and was one of the launch titles of the cult arcade system by SNK, and 1991 on the home system. It is still regarded today as one of the legendary game made by SNK on these systems.

In addition to this release, the soundtrack is accompanied by a brand-new virtuoso piano arrangement, especially produced by Wayô Records, and recorded in studio on a beautiful Steinway model C by Nicolas Horvath (official Steinway Artist). The Street Fighter™ III: The Collection four-disc box set will include 72 tracks from Street Fighter III: New Generation, 2nd Impact: Giant Attack, and 3rd Strike: Fight For The Future.

Street Fighter III first hit arcades in 1997 with New Generation, retaining only Ryu and Ken while introducing an otherwise brand new cast of characters. The final iteration, 3rd Strike, is widely recognized as one of the greatest fighting games of all time, and generated perhaps the most indelible competitive moment in gaming, with Daigo’s comeback again Justin Wong aka “Evo Moment #37.”

Composers Hideki Okugawa and Yuki Iwai explored a range of high energy dance styles across the three titles, leaning most heavily on jazzy house, jungle and drum’n’bass — with some samba rhythms thrown in for good measure.

Tracks have been specially remastered for vinyl and will be pressed onto four audiophile-quality, heavyweight 180g black discs. These will be housed in individual spined sleeves, contained within a rigid board outer slipcase."

Yo-Yo Ma Plays Ennio Morricone is a 2004 album of recordings from Morricone's various film scores by brilliant cellist Yo-Yo Ma and Ennio Morricone. The album was recorded with the Roma Sinfonietta Orchestra and Gilda Buttà on piano. Morricone functioned as orchestrator, conductor and producer. The album stayed 105 weeks on the Billboard Top Classical Albums.

The original score by Academy Award winner Volker Bertelmann that is the soundtrack to Jules, starring Sir Ben Kingsley (Gandhi, Schindler’s List), Harriet Sansom Harris (Licorice Pizza, “Hacks”), Jane Curtin (Coneheads, I Love You, Man) and Jade Quon (Transformers: The Last Knight, The Hunger Games) is set for release by ABKCO Records. Written by Gavin Steckler (“Review”, “Playing House”), Jules made its world premiere at the Sonoma International Film Festival where it was the opening night film, and won the Stolman Audience Award for Best Feature. The film is produced by Michael B. Clark, Andy Daly, Deborah Liebling and Alex Turtletaub alongside Marc Turtletaub.

Produced and directed by Marc Turtletaub (Puzzle, The Farewell, Little Miss Sunshine), Jules, a Bleecker Street release of a Big Beach production, was filmed in Morris County, NJ and follows Milton (Kingsley) who lives a quiet life of routine in a small western Pennsylvania town. His day is upended when a UFO and its extra-terrestrial passenger crash land in his backyard. Before long, Milton develops a close relationship with the extra-terrestrial he calls “Jules.”

Things become complicated when two neighbors (Harris and Curtin) discover Jules and the government quickly closes in. What follows is a funny, wildly inventive ride as the three neighbors find meaning and connection later in life – thanks to this unlikely stranger.

The film’s score is the work of composer/pianist Volker Bertelmann who was a 2017 Academy Award nominee for his score to Lion. Last year he received both an Academy Award and the British Academy Film Award (BAFTA) for his score for All Quiet on the Western Front. The Budapest Art Orchestra performs Bertelmann’s music for the Jules score. Recording under the name Hauschka, Bertelmann is a prolific artist in his own right and, beyond soundtracks, has released 20 full length albums of original music to date. The Washington Post’s Michael O’Sullivan wrote, “In the end, Jules performs a magical, if tiny, bait-and-switch: It’s less a sci-fi parable — “E.T. the Extraterrestrial” for the AARP demographic — than a fairy tale reminding us that the tribulations of getting old are more natural than sad, and best done in the company of loved ones.”

The VMP exclusive version of Jules (Original Score) is pressed on 180g Honey Crisp vinyl at GZ Vinyl. The 1LP will arrive in a single, direct-to-board jacket with an 8x10 insert and art by Sara Deck. It was mastered by Carl Rowatti at Trutone Mastering Labs.
