In his long and successful career Ennio Morricone composed many dance songs as it was in fashion in the late sixties and early seventies. Themes that were usually not directly connected with the subjects of the soundtrack, but which were played in disco clubs, on jukeboxes, turntables and on the radio. Steven Soderbergh’s take on Stanislaw Lem’s influential sci-fi tome Solaris was incredibly polarizing at the time. Some didn’t want to see it simply because it starred heart-throb George Clooney in what is essentially a mostly solo role, some didn’t appreciate it in light of legendary Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky’s overtly spiritual take on the same book. Soderbergh says of Martinez's pivotal role and his score, "I relied on it not only to unify the film emotionally, but to import actual narra-tive information." Martinez himself describes it as "one of the few soundtracks of mine that I can still stand to listen to.

I also think it was a score that made the greatest contribution to the film for which it was written." Described by BBC Music as "A brooding slow, meditative work" and a musical journey that "leaves the listener floating free" by Soundtrack.net, "Solaris' is an evocative and highly seductive score that still fully resonates with the listener more than a decade after it was first released.

Those that did manage to take it in would have noticed on thing in particular though – composer Cliff Martinez‘s haunting and deeply influential soundtrack. Percussive, but anchored with a slow, deeply affecting synthesized bass line throughout, the soundtrack served as a nudge in the right direction for drone-lovers and ambient types, and still sounds fresh even now. It’s hardly surprising then that Portishead’s Geoff Barrow has had the good sense to make sure it finally gets pressed to wax through his Invada imprint.

First appearing on TV screens in September 1968, Joe 90 was a unique nine year old boy with the ability to absorb the brain patterns of top experts enabling him to become the most special agent of W.I.N. (World Intelligence Network). Whilst there are arguably better-known scores amongst Barry Gray's sublime catalogue of work with the Andersons, the composer's work for Joe 90 is in many ways the most consistent and inventive selection he ever wrote. Developing a theme for the new series was always the musician's starting point, and for Joe 90, the pop charts breezed into Gray's studio, with an opening tune featuring a genuine groove. Mixing Gray's inventive electronics with 60s "surf rock" guitars was an inspired decision. It is no wonder that this piece has gone on to enjoy a second life as a Northern Soul disco floor-filler. For episodic incidentals, Gray was freed from the detached unearthly premise of Captain Scarlet and able to bring back a playful sensibility and a more mature musical palette which are amply illustrated in this 24 track collection.

This Ten Commandments soundtrack is a reimagining of the one originally used for the 1923 film by Cecil B. DeMille. Steve Berlin, Steven Drozd and Scott Amendola were stuck at home during Covid times when they decided to experiment with creating a score for a film, each being thousands of miles away from the others. The idea started with Berlin, who reached out to his two old friends, outlining a process of creation with each sending the other musical ideas to react to, breaking the Ten Commandment film into chapters, writing musical themes that could link the chapters together as a whole. The result was this Ten Commandments score, a score that blends all the participants musical touchstones—Krautrock, Jazz, Americana, Experimental—to create an incredible sonic experience. Highlights include the NEU-ish driving moment of the Egyptian soldiers chasing Moses and company towards the Red Sea or the Throbbing Gristle tribal groove of wandering the desert.

Originally premiering at the Venice Film Festival, COPENHAGEN COWBOY is a thrill-inducing, neon-drenched noir series set across six episodes which follows enigmatic young heroine, Miu. After a lifetime of servitude and on the verge of a new beginning, she traverses the ominous landscape of Copenhagen’s criminal netherworld. Searching for justice and enacting vengeance, she encounters her nemesis, Rakel, as they embark on an odyssey through the natural and the supernatural.

Created by Nicolas Winding Refn, (DRIVE, THE NEON DEMON) this new Netflix series features music written by Julian Winding, Peter Peter, and Cliff Martinez for the thriller set in Refn’s native Copenhagen. All frequent collaborators of Refn’s, the composing trio have infused the series with a synth-heavy, electronic soundscape befitting the neon-drenched journey through Denmark’s dark underworld.

Of the soundtrack, COPENHAGEN COWBOY director, writer and producer Nicolas Winding Refn says, “With COPENHAGEN COWBOY, I was able to revisit my past as I move toward my future, bringing together three very singular voices — Peter Peter, Cliff Martinez and spicing it up with Julian Winding. It’s a real trip that will give everyone hot thrills and warm chills.”

“Going into COPENHAGEN COWBOY, I knew immediately that I wanted to do my take on classic horror – the amazing themes and melodies I’ve grown up with,” adds composer Julian Winding. “It was important to me, like it probably was for, say, Fabio Frizzi, that there was a melody. There’s nothing like tapping your foot and humming along to some poor soul getting brutally murdered in spectacular fashion onscreen.”

The USA version of the soundtrack was released on DVD in 2003. Joe Hisaishi re-recorded the soundtrack with new arrangements and also added new songs.

We can safely say that some of the past Italian library music masterpieces will hardly reach the export levels of mainstream Italian pop music. However, there is no doubt that the recent rediscovery operation led by some record labels such as Schema, Sonor, Four Flies, Intervallo and many others, has helped to create a lively and passionate record collectors’ market where names such as Umiliani, Brugnolini, Torossi, Tommasi, Braen, Iacoucci, Alessandroni are the watchwords for entering a wonderful and relatively unknown musical territory. It is probably better to avoid comparing library music to the world of movie soundtracks, even if most of the aforementioned names were working across both fields. A prestigious name like that of Ennio Morricone is the perfect example of someone involved both in library music and soundtracks - but his imprint is too established to give the idea of the purpose of Italian library music, which was mainly to add sonorization to television programs that were lacking visual substance. For a great number of years these compositions were placed in artistic oblivion and only in recent times a group of enthusiasts around the world started sharing their passion for Italian library music. Among these enthusiasts the main character of this (our) story is Lorenzo Morresi, Italian producer, musician and DJ working between Milan and London where he collaborated with several artists from around the world. Driven by a strong passion for jazz, funk and disco, Lorenzo met Italian record producer and musician Luciano Cantone (aka ‘Le Isole’) many years ago. Luciano played Lorenzo some rare Italian library music gems that he was repressing; laying the first bricks of their mutual passion for this genre. Soon after Lorenzo started producing music in that genre; combining jazz and funk grooves, Italian synth melodies and vintage electronic sounds. Last year, to much critical acclaim, he released the album ‘Cosmica Italiana’, made in collaboration with British multi-instrumentalist, producer and DJ Ed ‘Tenderlonious’ Cawthorne, and released via his record label 22a, one of the most respected contemporary jazz labels. In March 2022 Lorenzo and Luciano started pre-producing ‘Pop Flop’ at Schema Records headquarters in Milan. Part of the album has also been produced at ‘Museo Del Synth Marchigiano & Italiano’, an incredible collection of rare Italian vintage synthesizers located in Le Marche region where Lorenzo was born. These Italian synthesizers (manufacturers such as Farfisa, Crumar and Elka) were very popular in the 1970s for library music and soundtracks, and they were also used outside of Italy by the likes of John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin, Keith Emerson, Jean-Michel Jarre and Ray Manzarek from the Doors. As Morresi himself explains, “I tried as a form of respect and love to avoid an album that simply imitates those fifty year old masterpieces, so my idea has been to add contemporary musical elements and genres together with modern production techniques to create something original”. Pop Flop has a warm, cinematic and philological feel; well balanced between tradition and innovation, fusing elements of funk, classical, acid jazz, afrobeat, trip hop - to name a few - and all whilst paying homage to those fantastic years. The song titles sound like we’ve been transported back to 1972 in a time machine: “Odeon," "Slalom," "Savana Urbana", "Beta Erotica”, “Allegro Funerario," "Rio De Janeiro Filter," and so on. We are sure that masters like Umiliani, Tommasi and Brugnolini will be pleased with the end result and will undoubtedly be smiling down from the sky.

The 'Pipeline' O.S.T. is the result of a collaboration between L'Ironie Du Son, Guillaume Peitrequin and Fabio Poujouly. It's an experimental soundtrack featuring material fitting in between ethnic and organic sounds, and electronic atmospheres giving birth to a splendid world of textures, ambiences and noises that are predominant in the movie. Limited to 400 copies in silkscreen printed cover with insert.

The film is full of aliens, comic books, rednecks, zombies, boobs, gals, gals fighting, and rock ‘n’ roll. Starring the Oblivians’ Jack Oblivian, with Guitar Wolf, Mike Maker, the deliciously curvy D’Lana Tunnell, and a guest appearance by exploitation master David F. Friedman himself.

Anyone who has seen his movies can attest to the fact that Mike McCarthy always overdelivers. Sore Losers is as good / bad an example as any. Whole soundtracks would be filled out around just one of the acts on this thing—case in point, Greg Oblivian doing a toy instrument version of the much-loved “Bad Man” that is worth the price of the record by itself. Plus The Gories / Dirtbombs’ Mick Collins, The Makers, Jack Oblivian himself, and the mighty Guitar Wolf! Also New Orleans garage/ frat kings Royal Pendletons, Jeffrey Evans of the Gibson Bros with his ’68 Comeback, and also featuring Jack Taylor, the most amazing / fucked up guitar player ever. His guitar tone started with the legendarily messed-up solo in the Velvet Underground’s “I Heard Her Call My Name” and then added four fuzz pedals to it, creating modern art! RIP Jack Taylor. There is also Nick Diablo of Viva L’American Death Ray Music, The Drags, The Makers, Tim Feleppa, Gasoline… This is quality ’90s garage rock, still raw and vital as ever.

This rerelease coincides with McCarthy’s new edit of the film. Southern sci-fi trash has never looked or sounded so good.

The Max Romeo album from 1975 gets the re-issue, remastered as LP-vinyl in original sleeve artwork with printed innersleeves and comprehensive linernotes! - Recorded at Randy’s Studio 17 and Lee Perry’s Black Ark, Max Romeo’s "Revelation Time" is rightfully regarded as one of the cornerstones of Jamaican music. Released in JA in 1975 on the Black World label the album was picked by United Artist for US release and later listed in The Rough Guide to Reggae as one of the essential reggae albums to own. Includes the classic Lee Perry production "Three Blind Mice" and one of the all-time killer herbman anthems "A Quarter Pound Of I'Cense". Collector's Note: The "Revelation Time" album is also known as the "Open The Iron Gate" album.

The Stooges are widely considered one of the greatest rock bands of all time and this comes across loud and clear on director Jim Jarmusch’s critically acclaimed documentary film ‘Gimme Danger’. Gimme Danger: Music From THE Motion Picture is a 14-track collection curated by Jarmusch and Stooges frontman Iggy Pop, with a focus on the group’s first three albums. Quentin Tarantino established himself as one of the few filmmakers to effectively use pop music with his first film Reservoir Dogs, a movie where the music was integral to the success of the film yet also worked well as a collection of songs. Jackie Brown, Tarantino's long-awaited third feature, finds him exploring new territory, creating an homage to blaxploitation flicks as well as a surprisingly subtle character study and love story, and its soundtrack appropriately finds him in new territory as well. The soundtrack still features snippets of dialogue, which simply aren't as effective separated from the film as those from Pulp Fiction, but the unified collection of '70s soul and funk is refreshing. He has wisely selected a batch of songs that haven't been worn out by oldies radio, building the bulk of the album with cult favorites like Bobby Womack's "Across 110th Street," Bill Withers' "Who Is He (And What Is He to You?)," Randy Crawford's "Street Life," Minnie Riperton's "Inside My Love," the Vampire Sound Inc.'s "The Lions and the Cucumber" and Pam Grier's "Long Time Woman." Only "Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time," "Strawberry Letter 23" and "Natural High," as well as the Grass Roots' "Midnight Confessions," are familiar oldies items, but they play an integral part in the film itself and help make the soundtrack a thoroughly enjoyable, compulsively listenable experience. - Thomas Erlewine at allmusic.com

His work has earned him several awards and nominations from ASCAP, the Game Audio Network Guild, the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences (D.I.C.E. Awards), and others. Roget also co-founded Impact Soundworks, a successful music software company, and is an accomplished lecturer on game music. He frequently gives online masterclasses and tutorials on music composition and production and has a passion for teaching the craft. He is an avid multi-instrumentalist, performing solo flute, keyboards, world instruments, and guitar on many of his scores.
