Quartet Records, in collaboration with Carosello Edizioni Musicali, presents a definitive, expanded 2-lp edition of Ennio Morricone’s celebrated score for 1971 Italian thriller Giornata Nera PER L’ariete (aka THE Fifth Cord), directed by Luigi Bazzoni and starring Franco Nero, Silvia Monti, Ira Von Fürstenbergm Edmund Purdon, Pamela Tiffin and Agostina Belli. Morricone’s thriller scores remain some of his most distinctive and original works. As demonstrated in his scores for Dario Argento’s efforts in the genre, Morricone’s uncanny ability to combine lyricism, unbridled avant-garde experimentation and stylish elegance was his most significant contribution to the category. Giornata Nera PER L’ariete shows Morricone once again embracing the sophisticated avant-garde sound while beginning his score with a haunting tune performed by Edda Dell’Orso heard over the film’s main titles. The lullaby-like theme has a timeless quality, providing a disturbing and disarming melody for the film. As with many of his giallos, Ennio Morricone’s score for Giornata Nera PER L’ariete was never released on an album (only the main theme was included in the Morricone compilation album Colori in 1971). In 1996, under the composer’s supervision, the Point label released the first official album of the score on CD. The first vinyl edition was released by Dagored on a generous LP in 2001. It was subsequently released by Spettro in 2016, this time using the same program that Morricone had produced in 1996. For this new deluxe, 2-lp Quartet release, the music has been fully restored, remixed and edited by Daniel Winkler from the original session tapes, presenting the first vinyl edition of the complete score as Morricone conceived it for the film. It has been specially mastered for vinyl by Chris Malone, and is presented in a luxurious gatefold jacket printed in transparent bloody red and giallo splatter.

Those vibrant, synth-driven songs, made in collaboration with his son Cody Carpenter and godson Daniel Davies, kickstarted a musical renaissance for the pioneering composer and director. In the years since, Carpenter, Carpenter, and Davies have released close to a dozen musical projects, including a growing library of studio albums and the scores for David Gordon Green's trilogy of Halloween reboots. With Lost Themes IV: Noir, they've struck gold again, this time mining the rich history of the film noir genre for inspiration.Since the first Lost Themes, John has referred to these compositions as "soundtracks for the movies in your mind." On the fourth installment in theseries, those movies are noirs. Like the film genre they were influenced by, what makes these songs "noirish" is sometimes slippery and hard to define, and not merely reducible to a collection of tropes. The scores for the great American noir pictures were largely orchestral, while the Carpenters and Davies work off a sturdy synth-and-guitar backbone. The discography of the phantom Gruppo Sound exceeds over thirty titles published in an undefined time frame between the Eighties and the Nineties. However, there is very little information about this curious pseudonym. it is possible to find a library music album by Gruppo Sound inside the Canopo, Deneb, Flower, Monosound Records and Teams catalogues, all managed by Flipper Music publishing group, but both the creators and the musicians have never been the same. Gruppo Sound is only a collective name, maybe to identify a certain number of 'new' productions characterized by an electronic background And, not by chance, the author of “New York City” is a single artist, the multi-instrumentalist Gabriele Ducros. Son of the prolific composer Remigio Ducros, he first followed his footsteps in the field of music libraries and soundtracks and then become the author of many tracks for television commercials of a certain relevance, winning some international awards. “Some of these tracks may have been associated with a pornographic film. Others were, however, made as brief comments for a theatrical show, perhaps never made”, remembers Gabriele Ducros. What unites the thirteen pieces is the same musical language, which derives from a widespread funk and jazz matrix. Both genres are thus declined through a different approach and taste, in line with the fusion trends of the time, when the early synthesizers were used by few artists. A handful of electric guitar notes for a 'urban' mood, the acoustic ones from a dreamy morning awakening. Electronic keyboards to arouse a sense of nostalgia in the listener, while flute and saxophone always punctuate different atmospheres. A computer melody, a theme for children and a sophisticated ode to the fusion sound of the Big Apple, perhaps true source of ispiration of the work. “New York City” is not a concept album, but one of the best cross-sections of Gabriele Ducros' great creativity.

Castellari's 1976 Western Keoma (aka THE Violent Breed, Keoma THE Avenger, Django Rides Again, Django'S Great Return and the like) is largely considered the best film they did together. Coming very late in the Italian or "Spaghetti" Western phase, the genre couldn't have had a better closing statement than Keoma, which offers a renewed approach with a unique audiovisual resonance that was every bit as striking as some of the first Italian Westerns that made international audiences stand up and pay attention. Castellari instructed the De Angelis's to write a song-score with songs in the style of Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. The half dozen or so "chapters" of the "Keoma" song serve as a Greek Chorus lending words to the gunfighter's silent actions throughout the film, or at least letting loose the raging voices of cynicism roiling about in his head. The mix of songs and instrumental score is striking and effectual in giving the drama a unique vocal texture that accentuates what we're seeing, highlighting the pain, revulsion, and disillusionment heard within those gruff and pained voices as they embody the unspoken angst of Keoma as he faces down his final adversary in the dark, sullied town of his birth. The album also includes the De Angelis Brothers' score to Castellari's 1979 film IL Cacciatore DI Squali (The Hunter of Sharks; aka THE Shark Hunter, Guardians OF THE Deep, and even Django AND THE SharkS). This film is a far more trivial potboiler than Keoma, but it's an entertaining enough picture for the undemanding viewer. The De Angelis Brothers provided a tuneful score for this post-JAWS adventure drama about treasure hunters daring shark-infested waters to dive for sunken wealth. The score conveys a dreamy vibe that fits the warm landscapes and clear, sun-dappled waters, and the dangerous underwater ambiences involving competing treasure hunters and sharks alike. Chris' Soundtrack Corner presents the entire instrumental score from Keoma, as well as the essential elements of the score for IL Cacciatore DI Squali, both specially mastered for vinyl, on this premiere vinyl edition, pressed on 180g black vinyl with a gatefold tip-on cover. The album is presented in a limited edition of 500 units.

ABOUT DAVID WINGO

David Wingo got his start composing music for films on David Gordon Green's debut feature, George Washington, and since that time has maintained a consistent working relationship with Green, scoring the majority of his films. In 2010 he scored Jeff Nichols' Take Shelter, and has since scored all of Nichols' films, including the forthcoming Bikeriders starring Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, and Jodie Comer. Wingo has transitioned into television over the last several years, providing the score for FX’s Mayans MC, Showtime's Kidding and HBO's Emmy Award-winning Barry, for which he received an Emmy Nomination in 2019 for Outstanding Music Composition for a Series.

ABOUT AMMAN ABBASI

Amman Abbasi is a Pakistani-American writer-director, editor, and composer from Little Rock, Arkansas. Filmmaker Magazine listed him among the 25 New Faces of Independent Film in 2016. His film Dayveon premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, was an Official Selection of the 2017 Berlin Film Festival, and went on to get two Film Independent Spirit Award nominations in 2018, including in the coveted Someone to Watch category. As a music composer, Abbasi’s compositions have appeared in several commercials, films, and documentaries, and most recently he was a music consultant for Halloween (2018) and Halloween Kills (2020). In 2008, he and his brother’s debut album, Something Like Nostalgia, topped the charts in Japan.

Old friends Julian Bates and Alex Gray —working together as Mighty Truth for the first time since 1995’s From The City To The Sea — filled a car with old analogue synths, kids’ noise toys, and collected field recordings took a road trip down to hole up in an old water mill in southwest England’s bird-twittery, bee-loud Quantock hills.

Things got cinematic: unequal measures of early Weather Report, Wim Wenders, and Serge Gainsbourg kept them wonderfully lost in their imagined world. Back in London with guest singers Allonymous (Paris via Chicago) and Wayne Paul (London), they completed the album and decided to just call it Mighty Truth. With an aim to present the live show at moonlight pop-up cinema venues, Mighty Truth are here for the next chapter in their epic saga.

WRWTFWW Records is happy to announce the first-ever physical release of Louisiana-based composer and producer Jammin’ Sam Miller’s full HD re-creation/restoration of the beloved Super Metroid video game soundtrack. The limited biovinyl double LP is packed with 27 tracks and features an exclusive artwork by French illustrator Pierre Thyss, as well as an obi strip.

Composed by Kenji Yamamoto and Minako Hamano, the soundtrack for 1994 SNES exploration / action-adventure / sci-fi / alien video game Super Metroid has always been a fan-favorite. A true masterclass in music storytelling, it beautifully evokes the epic and eerie adventure of the game’s protagonist Samus Aran with superb use of atmospheric sounds, space-operatic arrangements, rumbling bass, oppressive techno-futurist moods, tribal drums, and airy synth themes, admirably balancing the ominous feel of a dark menace and contemplative, even soothing, ambient soundscapes.

Jammin' Sam Miller assiduously recreated the soundtrack note by note, by finding the original equipment used to create it, translating the MIDI into a modern studio context, adding in keyboard samples, and re-mixing and re-mastering the whole score. He explains: "This was made possible by locating the original instrument samples from workstation keyboards and drum machines before they were put into the game and rebuilding the soundtrack from the ground up, applying some modern mixing techniques along the way to lift the veil of 16bit compression and create an updated listening experience."

Super Metroid is pressed on biovinyl, a sustainable alternative to traditional vinyl. Biovinyl replaces petroleum in S-PVC by recycling used cooking oil or industrial waste gases, resulting in 100% CO2 savings in bio-based S-PVC production. Furthermore, it is 100% recyclable and reusable, embracing the circular economy ideology.

The original score by Academy Award winner Volker Bertelmann that is the soundtrack to Jules, starring Sir Ben Kingsley (Gandhi, Schindler’s List), Harriet Sansom Harris (Licorice Pizza, “Hacks”), Jane Curtin (Coneheads, I Love You, Man) and Jade Quon (Transformers: The Last Knight, The Hunger Games) is set for release by ABKCO Records. Written by Gavin Steckler (“Review”, “Playing House”), Jules made its world premiere at the Sonoma International Film Festival where it was the opening night film, and won the Stolman Audience Award for Best Feature. The film is produced by Michael B. Clark, Andy Daly, Deborah Liebling and Alex Turtletaub alongside Marc Turtletaub.

Produced and directed by Marc Turtletaub (Puzzle, The Farewell, Little Miss Sunshine), Jules, a Bleecker Street release of a Big Beach production, was filmed in Morris County, NJ and follows Milton (Kingsley) who lives a quiet life of routine in a small western Pennsylvania town. His day is upended when a UFO and its extra-terrestrial passenger crash land in his backyard. Before long, Milton develops a close relationship with the extra-terrestrial he calls “Jules.”

Things become complicated when two neighbors (Harris and Curtin) discover Jules and the government quickly closes in. What follows is a funny, wildly inventive ride as the three neighbors find meaning and connection later in life – thanks to this unlikely stranger.

The film’s score is the work of composer/pianist Volker Bertelmann who was a 2017 Academy Award nominee for his score to Lion. Last year he received both an Academy Award and the British Academy Film Award (BAFTA) for his score for All Quiet on the Western Front. The Budapest Art Orchestra performs Bertelmann’s music for the Jules score. Recording under the name Hauschka, Bertelmann is a prolific artist in his own right and, beyond soundtracks, has released 20 full length albums of original music to date. The Washington Post’s Michael O’Sullivan wrote, “In the end, Jules performs a magical, if tiny, bait-and-switch: It’s less a sci-fi parable — “E.T. the Extraterrestrial” for the AARP demographic — than a fairy tale reminding us that the tribulations of getting old are more natural than sad, and best done in the company of loved ones.”

The VMP exclusive version of Jules (Original Score) is pressed on 180g Honey Crisp vinyl at GZ Vinyl. The 1LP will arrive in a single, direct-to-board jacket with an 8x10 insert and art by Sara Deck. It was mastered by Carl Rowatti at Trutone Mastering Labs.

The score by master composer Howard Shore brings a somber and menacing component to the movie. A series of twists will bring the group on an island, just submerged from the abyss which is the mythical Atlantis. The score, unreleased if we pay exception to a 7” vinyl of the 80s featuring the song BLACK INFERNO, is finally integrally available on CD, displaying a magnificent electronic style in the prevalent mood of many of the De Angelis’ bros scores of that decade such as Alien 2 sulla terra or 2019 dopo la caduta di New York. A much requested title by fans of the composers, we put an end to the waiting thanks to this release featuring a jewel case edition, mastering by Enrico De Gemini, graphic layout by Daniele De Gemini and derailing liner notes by eclectic musical critic Fabio Babini.
