Morricone Youth was formed in 1999 with a mission statement to compose, re-interpret, perform and/or record "music written for the moving image" (film/tv soundtracks, library music, etc.) in all incarnations from playing shows dedicated to specific composers/film genres in rock clubs/performance spaces with projections to live scoring films in theaters. Over the years, they've released CDs, toured and had residencies at the Knitting Factory, Cbgb, Tonic and, most recently, Nitehawk Cinema in Williamsburg. Brooklyn Academy of Music commissioned the group to write an original score to Hitchcock's The Lodger performed Halloween 2013. Philadelphia Museum of Art commissioned a piece for its Marcel Duchamp exhibit in 2012. Band members have scored for documentaries, short films, etc. and include current/past members of bands Creedle, Crash Worship, Pain Teens, Pronto (Wilco side band), aMINIATURE and THE Rugburns. Morricone Youth's original six song (25-min.) score for George A. Romero's 1968 Zombie classic in an edition of 500 copies with download. Mastered at 45 rpm.

The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to 2024 horror film Eight Eyes from director Austin Jennings (director/co-writer of Shudder’s The Last Drive-In With Joe Bob Briggs) which world premiered at the 2023 Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal, shot on 16mm and Super 8 on location in Serbia and Macedonia and starring Scream Queen Emily Sweet (v/h/s ‘99). The original score is composed by Devon Goldberg and performed by Morricone Youth. The film was co-produced by Vinegar Syndrome as the Blu-ray reissue/restoration label’s first entirely original production and is distributed by Shudder in North America and Donau Film in Europe. The film is available for streaming on Shudder as of September 23, 2024. Pressed on Eyeball Clear with Red Blood Vessel Swirl 150g vinyl.

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers with Barney Wilen provide an essential jazz soundtrack to an extended ‘surprise party’ scene in director Roger Vadim’s 'Les liaisons dangereuses'. Originally released on the Fontana label, Blakey’s lively hard-bop and latin originals were used specifically as night club and party music in the film and his ‘No Problem’ became a classic with Blakey’s band in full flight. Decca France present the original soundtrack recording on 180gm vinyl in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket with English translation of the original liner notes, and a photo from the film of Gérard Philippe and Jeanne Moreau. Included is a 2pp insert with additional notes by recording producer Marcel Romano from 1988.

While reading the “Midnight Skin” script for the first time, Carla Pallone (Vacarme, Mansfield.TYA) in Nantes met Fanny in Athens. And the Eucalyptus trees. And it was at this same moment that she saw through her window, an Eucalyptus tree. Fact and fiction are already mixing, and Carla Pallone welcomes this sign with a smile. Then comes the meeting with filmmaker Manolis Mavris, and his work: first “Brutalia”, then “Midnight Skin”. The writing is chiseled and precise. Each frame is a painting. At the center of the film: Fanny's solitude which excludes her from humankind. This solitude requires a place for expression. Carla Pallone thus imagines an “organic” music, linked to the way that wood, strings and other materials live and resonate. A poetic and strange sound universe, close to Fanny, to her physical and psychological states. She has found the perfect junction between acoustic and electronic, highlighting a modern violin, out of the times. The result is a soundtrack similar to Fanny, inhabited, dark and moving. Human.

David Wingo got his start composing music for films on David Gordon Green's debut feature, George Washington, and since that time has maintained a consistent working relationship with Green, scoring the majority of his films. In 2010 he scored Jeff Nichols' Take Shelter, and has since scored all of Nichols' films, including the forthcoming Bikeriders starring Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, and Jodie Comer. Wingo has transitioned into television over the last several years, providing the score for FX’s Mayans MC, Showtime's Kidding and HBO's Emmy Award-winning Barry, for which he received an Emmy Nomination in 2019 for Outstanding Music Composition for a Series.

ABOUT AMMAN ABBASI

Amman Abbasi is a Pakistani-American writer-director, editor, and composer from Little Rock, Arkansas. Filmmaker Magazine listed him among the 25 New Faces of Independent Film in 2016. His film Dayveon premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, was an Official Selection of the 2017 Berlin Film Festival, and went on to get two Film Independent Spirit Award nominations in 2018, including in the coveted Someone to Watch category. As a music composer, Abbasi’s compositions have appeared in several commercials, films, and documentaries, and most recently he was a music consultant for Halloween (2018) and Halloween Kills (2020). In 2008, he and his brother’s debut album, Something Like Nostalgia, topped the charts in Japan.

Waxwork Records is beyond thrilled to announce the debut vinyl release of Evil Dead Rise Original Motion Picture Soundtrack by Stephen McKeon. Written and directed by Lee Cronin (“The Hole in the Ground”), the movie stars Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland.

Moving the action out of the woods and into the city, Evil Dead Rise tells a twisted tale of two estranged sisters, played by Sullivan and Sutherland, whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.

Evil Dead Rise is produced by longtime franchise producer Rob Tapert (Ash vs Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe) and executive produced by series creator and horror icon Sam Raimi and cult legend and “Ash” himself, Bruce Campbell.

About THE Composer

Stephen McKeon has been composing music for film and television for more than 30 years. A highly versatile multi-instrumentalist, he has scored over 100 feature films and numerous award-winning international television drama series and documentaries, including Black Mirror (“Fifteen Million Merits”).

McKeon, an admitted ‘huge horror fan,’ discussed his approach to the film’s soundtrack. “Lee liked the idea of something offscreen laughing and delighting at the suffering and terror of the characters, so I recorded two female vocalists performing 'taunting' sounds and vocal effects.

(Lee) wanted a score that was visceral, immersive and confrontational, while still leaving room for an emotional theme. So, I began to create sounds and textures based on guitar feedback; guitar strings stretching and breaking; strings being ripped with knives and scissors; and many other weird effects. Many of these made it into the score as part of the texture and tapestry. But ultimately, for the signature, we hit upon an idea we called 'the meat grinder.' I spent a week creating lots of sounds using a variety of methods, but eventually, the one that worked was the result of me dragging carving knives along the strings of my beautiful grand piano and then chopping and stretching the audio into something that eventually sounded like a demonic meat grinder being revved up.”

McKeon also recorded various stringed and percussion instruments, “being tortured, broken and slowly dismembered. Then, these recordings were chopped up, bent and stretched before being fed, screaming for mercy, into the score.”

In particular, the initial one-two of "Sorry, Doc!" and "Wind It Up" provide thrilling funky-blues rock instrumentals showcasing relentless guitars, flutes, sax and organ, the latter containing gorgeous, hypnotic breakdowns; these tracks just slay. The title track, "Blue Butterfly" is a real deep strut of a track with fantastic soloing from guitar and flute over crisp drums whilst the highway banger "What You Call To Be Free" certainly sounds a lot like unbridled, rhythmical liberty.

On the flip, the ghost-riding "Lady In Space" is a string-drenched acid-western foxtrot. Yep. “Pop Happening” by Jan Troysen Band is a heavy, druggy psych-fuzz organ groover whilst their slow beat-organ-flute gem "A Blue Message" is a gorgeous psych floater conjuring deeply strange frontier lands. Preceding their monster "Soft Wind", the soulful, uptempo groover “Ghetto Gap” by Orchestra Gary Pacific contains solo piano and flute whilst closing out the set is the free-and-easy samba beat of "So Far".

Founded in the late 60s by German composer and musician Klaus Netzle (who recorded under the alias Claude Larson for Sonoton) Selected Sound began as a production music company specialising in jazz, orchestral and electronic recordings. You can’t miss those early LPs in their iconic glossy metallic copper sleeves with minimal German typography. Serious, classy stuff.

For this extremely special 50 year anniversary re-issue, we've reproduced the classic Tele Music sleeve with a full colour insert featuring rare photographs, fresh liner notes and personal memories of Tonio from the likes of Jean-Claude Vannier, Jean-Claude Petit and Janko Nilovic.

Sumptuous opener “Latin Leitmotiv” is all funky phasing effects and a killer montuno, with what sounds like piano and bass in tandem, stoking straight up Latin fire. The gritty hard funk of blaxploitation groove "Red Medium" is dripping in wah-wah attitude and head-nod oddness. The atmospheric, exotica-tinged "Dead Slow" emulates the languid, sensual afro groove of Quincy Jones’ wild masterpiece “Gula Matari” whilst the proggy, electric jazz fusion epic "Rock 73" is 9+ minutes of moody, rolling menace.

But the *real* highlight of this cult classic - and why it has long been *so* desirable - is the devastating, deep, hypnotic minimalist groove of "Bass In Action N°1". Very much in conversation with Quincy's rendition of "Hummin'", the loping, rumbling bassline and sweet electric piano over clean, crisp drums making it one of those tracks that sounds like a hip-hop beat 20 years ahead of time. Sensational. “Bass In Action N°2“ features Tonio's own vocal scat performance. Remarkable.

Antonio "Tonio" Rubio Garcia got his start playing the double bass in jazz clubs. In 1962, Tonio joined the Golden Stars, the first backing band of France’s teenage idol Johnny Hallyday. A genius musician with a unique guitar sound, he played on standards of French chanson including Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot’s "Bonnie and Clyde", Françoise Hardy’s "Tous les Garçons et les Filles", Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin’s "Je T’aime, Moi Non Plus" and Serge and Charlotte Gainsbourg’s infamous "Lemon Incest". Tonio also lent his brilliance to such legendary figures as Janko Nilovic, Jean-Claude Petit, Hervé Roy, and Jean-Claude Vannier. The latter remembers Tonio as “a secretive, mysterious man, with an endearing personality, albeit difficult to reach out to. His virtuosity as a bass player allowed me to write very innovative basslines, because he was able to play any of my eccentricities!”

Quirky as fuck!' is the term to describe the latest killer 45 from Paul Elliott & Shawn Lee. Since they crossed paths over a decade ago, Paul (Eleven76/Hot Border Special/The Mighty Mocambos) & Shawn (Ping Pong Orchestra/Young Gun Silver Fox) have collaborated on many impressive projects including the critically acclaimed documentary The Library Music Film. The pair share a love of weird, exotic, otherworldly sounds that can usually only be found in classic library music. However, with their latest release on Farfalla Records, they take the listener on a deep dive into the strange, percussive and unusual world they inhabit! 'Bass Sick Bitch' begins with a glitchy toy rhythm and leads into a voice memo of a wooden 'Jank tone' instrument that Shawn had played and recorded for Paul to hear. Paul's low slung drums and percussion take off and the pair exchange phrases on some of their unusual instruments. From deep in the heart of Moominvalley, frozen in time for many midwinters passed, comes a genuine treasure chest of never heard Moomin melodies and instrumental comet songs composed for the continued animated adventures of our Fuzzy-Felt freak folk friends who disappeared from UK TV pastures in the mid-1980s. From the top of the Hobgoblin’s Hat and the bottom of Snufkin’s satchel, original Moomin’s composer Graeme Miller (The Carrier Frequency) kindly shares this patchwork selection of spellbinding sound poems and percussive peons made using the very same selection of ocarinas, kalimbas, miniature squeak boxes, Waspy synths, cornflake box shakers and a seemingly endless array of talent and lo-fi home studio trickery. Regarded as one of the most enigmatic, beguiling and haunting imported children’s programmes to ever grace UK TV screens, The Moomins was one of the first-ever commissions by Anne Wood (The Teletubbies) who ingeniously replaced the original Polish/ Austrian/Finnish soundtrack with homemade music experiments by unknown post-punk theatre students Graeme Miller and Steve Shill (aka The Commies From Mars) who after the screening of two unforgettable series in 1983 and 1985 were left in eager anticipation of rescoring further Moomin adventures with new melodies, arrangements and sound designs which then lingered in the ether waiting until the Groke awoke and Snorkmaiden sang once more. With future felt adventures screened exclusively in Poland and Germany for many years (often as feature films) these unheard recordings are the only genuine musical sequel to the bizarre UK version of The Moomins and stand as important inclusions the Graeme Miller’s own portfolio of theatrical theme music and sound installations as part of The Impact Theatre Cooperative including collaborations with artists and writers such as Russell Hoban. Witnessed in fragmented form during a short run of incredible rare live screenings at The Barbican Theatre and various film festival this record marks the first time this music has been heard in its original full-length form, free from sound effects, dialogue and whimpers of euphoric joy and nostalgia from those who have continued to crave the company of our Moomintrolls and their mysterious music over the last five decades.
