Back in the 90’s, hiphop kids like myself would often gravitate towards bands like Portishead to take a break from hip hop without going on a complete vacation. Since the sampled drums were gritty and the instrumentation and singing were soulful, it gave people that familiar hiphop vibe while being completely unique.

Now, Portishead’s style and influence can be heard everywhere in modern music as a legendary group who led the way for “trip hop”, fusing hiphop, electronic, film scores, and soul music in rare form. Included in this limited run (green vinyl) 7” are Kero 1 remixes of their quintessential tracks, “Glory Box” and “Roads”. On Glory Box, Kero mashes togehter a mixture of Bossa, Amapiano and house for dance floor energy along with the previously released Roads remix on the B-side, which reached a million streams online with critical acclaim for not destroying the original but actually elevating it. On Roads, Kero adds a fuller dimension using a 80’s analog synth bass while still allowing the lead vocalist, Beth, to remain the focus. In the end, Kero hopes this remix renews interest in Portishead among listeners who aren’t familiar with an entire music genre they helped pioneer.

It's been a while, but after some significant restructuring behind the scenes, Soul Flip is back in the groove, with a fresh new look, and more sweet, soulful sounds.



Chapter 16 of the Soul Flip story sees Del Gazeebo breathe fresh life into a couple of absolute classics, steering them directly at the dancefloor.



First up for the Soul Flip treatment is Sam & Dave's "Soul Man", Del somehow making an already big tune even bigger, and very much more DJ-friendly.



On the flip, Del takes the O'Jays original version of "Now That We Found Love" & injects it with fresh energy. It also retains the glorious strings from the album version that was edited out from the original 7" (UK only) release.

J.Rocc takes the Purple Antidote to heart and carries us on a full bodied spiritual journey.

JNCO presented by Wally Puma is a new label dedicated to reanimating and reimagining rave era classics back to their roots. The A side might as well be a mission statement for the label. Renegade Trouble combines raw breakbeats with vocal stabs, anthemic horns and a big rolling bass line. Golden era raps rain down from the 90s in a way that heads will surely ador. The B side is a bit more uptempo yet still delivers crispy a breakbeat and shifts the shape of an 80’s soul sample with filters and big horns. This track is a hands in the air moment in any set at any time.

The mighty Dusty Donuts label is back with a bang. After seeing an extended hiatus due to global conflicts and supply chain issues, they’re back on track. The Balkan phenom DJ Goce is behind the boards for this one and it’s a doozy. Taking inspiration from early naughties soul laced bangers, both sides are heavy. Side A is derived from a track produced by a certain NPD laced fashion mogul and builds on the Soul and Hip Hip stabs. Goce drops crazy Game on this one. Side B is a Problem. And no one can seem to solve it. The answer is that this 45 won’t leave crates for a long while.

Two of the biggest names in the game join forces & the results do not disappoint!Straight out of Le Havre, Djar One's beat-heavy productions have been demanding attention on dancefloors and radio stations worldwide via his Beats House imprint. We couldn't be more delighted to have him on board the good ship Soul Flip for our eleventh 45 release. First up for the Djar One treatment is Mary Wells' Northern-leaning stomper, "Can't You See (You're Losing Me)". Already a dancefloor bomb, Djar One ramps up the energy still further to devastating effect. On the flip, he takes on the seldom-heard original 1965 version of "Uncle Willie Good Time" by The Astors with similarly superb results.

In a world of beauty school dropouts and jukebox tearjerkers, Eva Lazarus (DJ Vadim, The Nextmen, and a guest on Yoda’s ‘Home Cooking’ album) invites you to come and feel ‘My Energy’. A superlatively soulful slow jam wrapped in stars and stripes, it’s a timeless, lilting breakup song, with Yoda shiftily putting in work on the decks out back. Authentic doo wop straight from a 50s picture show, Lazarus takes centre stage as she leaves a string of devastated would-be suitors in her wake. The new sound of DJ Yoda revisits a golden era of rhythm and blues – going all in on ‘Prom Nite’, his new album of retro Americana and superstar guests continues to expand his musical expertise, with his signature scratches and cut-ups craftily coming into view over Heartbreak Ridge.

Drums, please! Fortunately, Manuel Tur has plenty of them. The well-versed producer is no stranger to Running Back and a most-welcome returnee. Following the box-office success of 121 BPM on the very first Rhythm Trainx edition in 2015 – not to be confused with 121 BPM (1) on here – Tur prepared a whole collection of beating, driving, percussive, pulsating, fast and slow DJ tools, rhythmic repetitions and acrobatic adventures. A dozen tracks (including digital exclusives) Ranging from 100 to 150 Bpm, you get it all and then some: from tribal trace elements to Windy City patterns, New York house fabrics, robotic funk and some of techno’s DNA. Saves the (last) night of any DJ and your next mixtape.

Tones 1.0 is a record specifically made for the purpose of melodic scratching,

although it is not limited to just that; it can be also used as a production tool.

Think of Tones 1.0 as a synthesized toolkit that blurs the lines between live

performance and production.



Side A consists of 16 locked modulating tones (8 bass tones and 8 lead tones)

that have been recorded from various analog synthesizers. They were recorded

live while manipulating cut-off frequencies, resonance and LFOs to a click track

at 133.33 BPM. This gives the tones extra rich sonics and more depth while

being scratched. Each bass tone is recorded at middle C (c3) while each lead

tone has been recorded an octave higher (c4).



Side B consists of musical phrases, chords, drums, experimental tones and

skip-proof atonal scratch sounds, all of which have been recorded at 133.33

BPM.



You’ll find a rich tapestry of ideas to choose from ranging from funk basslines/

chords and licks, soul chords and licks, drums, atonal scratch sounds and

experimental tones that create futuristic atmospheres. Major and minor 7th

chords follow the circle of 5ths so that they are all relative to each other,

perfect for creating music quickly. Once you’ve created a beat/sketch you can

then jump to the skip-proof atonal scratch sounds and solo over the top. Enjoy.

Barn Breaks vol Iii', presented by Owlvaro & Hugu, is the latest installment of oddball samples and loops from your favorite globe-trotting Texan trio, and is perfect for ant portablist scratch jam or 7" DJ set... The latest in the series, this "skipless" 7" contains scratch samples from "Mordechai" - band hits, isolated basslines & vocals, guitar notes, keyboard stabs and drum loops - as well as custom "ahhhh" & "fressshh" sounds. Something different for the 7" DJs and portablists, a DJ tool from Sausage Fingaz in Kunming, China. 6 edited acapellas and 2 skipless scratches on limited edition splattered coloured final. It was specially designed to create live mash ups and remixes.
