The collection bursts at the seams to reveal some of the greatest Japanese tracks ever laid to tape, pushing towards the edge of City Pop to reveal glimmers of the next waves of styles to spring forth from the country’s creative minds. The appearance of Pizzicato Five hint at the emergence of Shibuya-kei while the influence of hip hop and electro as an emerging global trend are also evident here through the prevalence of heavier programmed drum beats on tracks such as “Heartbeat” by Miho Fujiwara.

This volume of Pacific Breeze, like its predecessors, is a female-forward offering, with many tracks being voiced by women who would become household names in Japan as actresses and pop idols. Their songs here subvert the norm and brim with an innovative spirit that shatters gender roles in favor of sonic transcendence. Techno-pop classics from Susan, Miharu Koshi and Chiemi Manabe sit alongside sublime funk from Atsuko Nina and Naomi Akimoto, while Teresa Noda slides into the mix with a sultry reggae jam. The box which includes an LP, two CDs, two DVDs and a book, features the album remastered for the first time from the original analogue tape masters on LP, and CD. The Extras CD contains previously unreleased writing sessions from New Order’s Manchester rehearsal rooms and the 1982 John Peel Session for the BBC. The DVDs capture New Order live during 1982 & 83 at The Hacienda and Kilkenny, the 1984 Play at Home Channel 4 TV documentary and other rare live & TV performances. Finally a beautiful 48 page hardback book of rare photos and brand new essay from Dave Simpson completes the Peter Saville designed box.

Power, Corruption & Lies was recorded in 1982 at Britannia Row Studios, Islington and produced by New Order.

In eleven years of deep digging, Dark Entries has uncovered many curiosities, lone exemplars of the scarsest breeds. They are lurking in Croatia, on the streets of New York, maybe in the back of your own dusty closet - these odd-ball Italo and synth-wave monsters are too rare to live, too divine to die. Once-lost creatures now have a home with Dark Entries’ new Endangered Species series. The inaugural edition features five specimens previously deemed extinct, only mentioned passingly in lore and speculation, but now safely preserved on vinyl. The first cut on Endangered Species Vol. 1 is the previously unreleased electro-New Wave gem “Munich” by John King, an artist best known for his work as one half of the Dust Brothers, lauded producers of the Beastie Boys’ legendary Paul’s Boutique. “Munich”, a Danceteria-ready cut produced in 1983, sheds some light on King’s earlier interests, bridging between freestyle and emotive synthpop. Next up is a rare demo version of The Actor’s “Picture 210”. The Dutch duo here channel both the minimalism of Kraftwerk and the Surrealism of Throbbing Gristle to create one of the finest teary-eyed Goth club anthems. Brazil is a synthpop band from Croatia, and they feature with their 1990 cover of Tears for Fears’ “Mad World”, which is sure to turn some heads on the dancefloor. The eerily faithful production belies Brazil’s re-working of the song’s lyrics. “L'Étranger (Ana Gharib)” by Jamal Khe follows, a pearl originally only available on an impossibly rare French 7” from 1983. Khe is from the Ain Beida region of Algeria, and his Arabic vocal melodies perfectly complement the propulsive percussion and airy arpeggios from producer Jacky Bourgogne. Closing the record is the previously unreleased “Abemus Mind” from Marzio Benellil’s project Nightless. Recorded in 1983, this moody, low-tempo Italo groover features Gregorian chant-inspired vocoders and jazzy piano courtesy of Benelli’s collaborator Marco Falagiani. All songs were mastered for vinyl by George Horn. The sleeve is the first in a series of endangered animal designs by Eloise Leigh, featuring the glam tiger in its natural, 1980’s habitat. Also included is an insert with lyrics, photos, and notes. Please assist us in our efforts to preserve this planet’s weirdest beasts.

We are proud to release a compilation from British post-punk/Futurist group Ghosts of Dance formed in North Devon in 1981. The members were Yvette Norris (vocals), Kevin Maynard (drums), Daryl Hunt (bass), Mark Butcher (keyboards), and Pete Heaton (guitar). Ghosts of Dance took their name from the song 'Ghosts' by David Sylvian which appeared on the first Japan album. After playing an early gig in Barnstaple, a gentleman in the audience named Richard Newman expressed his interest to start a record label and release their music. Richard scheduled a recording session for the band at Otter Studios in Georgeham with producer Harry Williamson, son of Henry Williamson, member of progressive rock band Gong. The debut single ‘Ghosts of Dance’ was released in 1982 on Plastic Canvas Records to mixed reviews as it was very different from anything being released at the time. Our compilation includes their debut single along with 9 bonus tracks recorded between 1981 and 1983 on vinyl for the first time. The band call themselves “Vocal Trance Music” on the 7” sleeve credits and it’s accurate. We call it melancholic pop with gloomy atmosphere and dream-like melodies. The final track shows the band moving in a New Romantic direction with Mark taking over the main vocals. All songs have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. Each copy is housed in a jacket featuring original artwork by John Hurford and includes an insert with photos, lyrics and liner notes by Pete Heaton.

Pacific Breeze documents Japan’s blast into the stratosphere. By the 1960s, the nation had achieved a postwar miracle, soaring to become the world’s second largest economy. Thriving tech exports sent The Rising Sun over the moon. Its pocket cassette players, bleeping video games, and gleaming cars boomed worldwide, wooing pleasure points and pumping Japanese pockets full of yen.

Japan’s financial buoyancy also permeated its popular culture, birthing an audio analog called City Pop. This new sound arose in the mid ’70s and ruled through the ’80s, channeling the country’s contemporary psyche. It was sophisticated music mirroring Japan’s punch-drunk prosperity. City Pop epitomized the era, providing a soundtrack for emerging urbanites. An optimistic spirit buzzed through the music in neon-bathed, gauzy tableaus coated with groove-heavy strokes.

Pacific Breeze is an expertly compiled collection of choice cuts that range from silky smooth grooves to innovative techno pop bangers and everything in between. Long-revered by crate diggers and adventurous music heads, this music has never been released outside of Japan until now. Including key artists like Taeko Ohnuki and Minako Yoshida, as well as cult favorites Hitomi Tohyama and Hiroshi Sato, the long-awaited release also features newly commissioned cover painting by Tokyo-based artist Hiroshi Nagai, whose iconic images of resort living have graced the covers of many classic City Pop albums of the 1980s.

Many of the key City Pop players evolved from the Japanese New Music scene of the early ’70s, as heard on Light In The Attic’s acclaimed Even a Tree Can Shed Tears: Japanese Folk & Rock 1969-1973, the first release of the ongoing Japan Archival Series. In fact, you could say City Pop set sail with a champagne smash from Happy End, the freakishly talented subversives who included amongst their ranks Haruomi Hosono and Shigeru Suzuki, both featured on this compilation. As Michael K. Bourdaghs noted in his book, Sayonara Amerika, Sayonara Nippon, this music was, “Deconstructing the line between imitation and authenticity.” Some of the best City Pop teeters in this zone—easy listening with mutant exotica, tilted techno-pop, and steamy boogie bubbling beneath the gloss.

Crash Course In Science are a post punk band that formed in 1979 in Philadelphia. The band members, Dale Feliciello, Mallory Yago and Michael Zodorozny, met while attending art school, where they began to experiment with crude electronics and off-beat lyrics. CCIS avoided

conventional instrumentation by using toy instruments and kitchen appliances to augment the distorted guitar, drums and synthesized beats. Their first single, “Cakes in the Home” was released in 1979 followed by a 4-song 12″ EP “Signals From Pier Thirteen” in 1981.


“Jump Over Barrels” was recorded at the Third Story Studio in Philadelphia in 1981, one year after “Signals From Pier Thirteen”. The song remained unmixed and unreleased at that time for a proposed album titled “Near Marineland”. Lyrically the song tackles overcoming obstacles, self imposed or otherwise, with vocal interplay between Michael and Mallory. On the A Side is the original mix and a demo mix from 1981. Then on the flip is a brand new remix by prolific Ann Arbor producer Charles Manier, a pseudonym of Tadd Mullinix, who toughens up the track. Also included is an unreleased demo version of the song from 1980, accentuating the raw and skeletal nature of the track.


All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. It is in a custom-made jacket by our in-house designer Eloise Leigh that incorporates waveform-esque squiggles jumping over abstract barrel symbols, plus a postcard with lyrics and notes.

On Retinae' was released in 1989 by Dip in the Pool, which has been re-discovered from around the world, as proven by a reissue of the album from an overseas labels two years ago. This has been a long-awaited reissue! In addition to Masyako Koda and Tatsushi Kimura, members of MARIAH, Yasuaki Shimizu, etc. participated in this work through the album. Floating Into The Night is the debut album by the American dream pop musician Julee Cruise, released in 1989. The album was produced, and all songs were written by, composer Angelo Badalamenti and film director David Lynch. Two singles were released from the album: "Falling" and "Rockin' Back Inside My Heart", both of which are featured in Lynch's television series, Twin Peaks. An instrumental version of "Falling" is used as the theme song to the series.

Anne Clark is a poet, songwriter and singer in one person. The musician conveys her sophisticated lyrics to her audience through a kind of spoken word singing. She dresses them in a sound costume primarily characterized by electronic instruments, which lends her songs a certain coolness.
1988 saw the release of "R.S.V.P.", her first concert album, recorded at the Music Centrum, Utrecht in May 1987. The keyboard-heavy band performs with routine and sensitivity. A highlight of the disc is the mystic-mysterious sounding "Cane Hill". And also with "Wallies", one of her more popular songs, Anne Clark can score.
A very successful album, atmospheric, melodic, well produced. You can literally feel the intimate atmosphere between Anne Clark and the audience present. Limited 180 gram vinyl LP pressing of this album from the classic rock band. Released in 1987, Permanent Vacation marked a turning point in the band's career. Here the band worked alongside professional songwriters to craft an album chock full of hits that charted in the Top 20. This came at the suggestion of executive John Kalodner. He also pushed the band to work with producer Bruce Fairbairn, who remained with them for another two albums. It was also the first Aerosmith album to be promoted by heavy music video airplay on MTV. Though Done with Mirrors was intended to mark Aerosmith's comeback, Permanent Vacation is often considered their true comeback, as it was the band's first truly popular album since their reunion. Tracks like 'Rag Doll', 'Dude (Looks like a Lady)', and 'Angel' helped Permanent Vacation become the band's greatest success in a decade.

"downt" is a three-piece band formed in Tokyo in 2021 by Yui Togashi (Gt/Vo), Takaaki Kawai (Ba) and Tener Ken Robert (Dr). Influenced by kind of post-hardcore and math rock brought to the world by 80-90s American labels such as Dischord Records and Ebullition Records, their delicate yet developed performances with a sense of urgency brought about by complex guitar phrases, and songs are written with an outstanding sense of melody and emotional words which is making the band can stand beyond categorize of music style. The songs are written with superb melodies and emotional language that sets them apart from other artists. Togashi's gently and sharply impassioned vocals also help to express their stance with genre-defying music and spirituality.

The 10" ep, released ahead of the new album, will include the epic '13th Moon', an over 8-minute track that was created to break new ground as a band. This is a song that gives you a sense of strength that gently pushes you back in the uncertain haze of everyday life that seems to go on forever. The song opens with drums and ends with layers and layers of water seeping through.The B-side of the record is etched with artwork showing the delicate sensibilities of the band. Their early work was compiled and released as an LP by Dog Knights Productions in the UK though it's no longer available, so this ep is only the vinyl format of downt's release you can get now!

Billy Preston was an American musician, who encompassed R&B, rock, soul, funk and gospel. He worked as a top session musician during the Sixties, backing artists such as Little Richard, Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones and the Beatles amongst others. He is even the only non-Beatle musician to be given a credit on a Beatles recording at the band’s request. His solo career took off during the first half of the Sixties, but it was his early Seventies soul work that put him on the permanent musical map. You Can’t Keep A Good Man Down was one of Preston’s final studio albums and originally came out in 1986.

In Menstrual Night was recorded in 1985 by Current 93, who could never be: David Michael Tibet, Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson, Steven Stapleton, Diana Rogerson, John Balance, Ruby Tathata Wallis, Keiko Yoshida, Rose McDowall and Bee. The album was mixed by Steven Stapleton, and was originally released as a picture disc on United Dairies / Maldoror (ud022/m) in 1985.

Stella is the fourth studio album by the Swiss electronic band Yello, first released in 1985. It was the band's breakthrough album internationally, helped by the success of the song "Oh Yeah", which gained the band worldwide attention the following year after it was prominently featured in the 1985 film Ferris Bueller's Day Off and then two years later in The Secret Of My Success.
