When Chester Watson debuted in the mid-2010s with verbose, technically precise music indebted to MF Doom, Earl Sweatshirt, and more obscure artists from the stratosphere and the blogosphere, it was as if he was simultaneously from the past and future. Before he was old enough to legally drink, there were “Best Of,” rarities compilations, and .zip files floating through the ether. Whenever industry prospectors earmarked him as the next big thing, he disappeared back underground, only to reemerge sharper, leaner, weirder. Though only 26, the St. Louis-born rapper and producer has seen enough for several lifetimes—and raps as if he’s tapped into many more. But after a few years of highs, lows, and traumatic odysseys, he was able to stare straight into the abyss and conquer it. This regained confidence is exhibited on fish don’t climb trees, the largely self-produced new album that reaffirms him as one of rap’s great auteurs. While working on "fish", he vowed to be more true to the emotions and experiences he’d endured. Being true to those fractured, discordant feelings requires a prismatic approach. And so you get fish’s exhilarating hairpin turns: from downtempo dub (“bora bora”) to 808s rattling through a haunted house (“tourniquet”), beats that sound as if they’re molting into new shapes in real time (the two-song suite of “daze” and “grey theory”) to ones that that plunge to the bottom of a pocket (“spirits”). The album’s title comes from the maybe-apocryphal Einstein quote, about how a fish judged by its ability to climb trees will “spend its whole life believing it is stupid.” For Watson, this meant embracing the cheery first half of the quote (“Everybody is a genius”), but also being cognizant of the dark undercurrents that flow just beneath seemingly innocent misjudgments and mis-categorizations.

Enter the realm of Illa J, the musical force shaking the foundations of the industry. His latest offering, 'No Traffic', is a testament to his boundless talent and versatility, showcasing his singing, production and rapping abilities on 19 tracks written and produced entirely by Illa J himself. This album marks his debut on BBE Music and a new chapter in his musical journey. Meet Illa J: a musical prodigy raised in a family of talented musicians. With a jazz bassist father and a gifted singer mother, it's no surprise that Illa J was destined for greatness. He's best known as the younger brother of hip-hop legend J Dilla and has made a name for himself as a former member of Detroit's iconic hip-hop group, Slum Village. With a lifetime of exposure to quality music and top-tier musicians, Illa J is a force to be reckoned with. Created amidst the chaos of the pandemic, Illa J's 'No Traffic' serves as a beacon of hope, a roadmap for creatives seeking their path. He enlists the help of Detroit legends Amp Fiddler, Frank n Dank, British soul sensation Harleighblu, and introduces the rising stars of Detroit, Serious, Joz B, Maine Soul, and more, all matching Illa J's energy and passion on the tracks. The focus track of the album, "Star Struck", is a prime example of Illa J's signature style. The astral pentatonic soundscape and precise drum programming transport you to new heights, while Illa J's beats, melodies, and bars will leave you in awe. 'No Traffic' is a musical journey that takes you to a place where Illa J's playful and versatile sound reigns supreme. The album is expertly mastered by Grammy-award nominated The Carvery Studio and is a refreshing experience of a true artist reveling in their artistry. Don't miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to delve into Illa J's musical realm."

Repress ! Somewhere in between the rock-star mischief of the Beastie Boys and the slow-creeping funk of Dr. Dre, Cypress Hill introduced their hazy-eyed sound to the world on their self-titled 1991 debut and things have never quite been the same since. The original Cypress Hill album captures the group at their risk-taking best, mixing gangster posturing, LA street politics, Latin flavor and warped humor together under a thick cloud of weed smoke and innovative beats. Nasal-voiced rapper B-Real and his partner Sen Dog, backed by the adventurous production styles of DJ Muggs, produce classics records like "How I Could Just Kill a Man," "Pigs," "Stoned is the Way of the Walk" and "Hand on the Pump." Since its release, the album has won acclaim as one of Rolling Stone's "Essential Recordings of the 90s" and "Top 100 Best Rap Albums" by The Source magazine.

Decay, the new album from New Jersey rapper Fatboi Sharif and producer Steel Tipped Dove, is an anomaly. In an era of microwave projects and email collaborations, the duo spent more than a year writing, recording and mixing Decay together in Dove’s Brooklyn studio. At a moment when many independent hip-hop projects are sonically predictable, easily categorized, and derivative, Decay is unapologetically experimental. Love it or hate it, it doesn’t sound like any other record out. Add to all that the fact that, bucking the trend of feature-laden rap records, there isn’t a single guest appearance on Decay. This album is a one-of-one, handcrafted from the ground up by two of the genre’s most esoteric artists, under the umbrella of indie rap’s preeminent record label.

In October 2020 Dove got in touch with Sharif after hearing Gandhi Loves Children, Sharif’s project with Roper Williams.

“I really liked the experimental writing he was doing. The whole vibe was different from the beat choices, the visuals, the lyrics — all unique,” Dove explains. The two of them linked up and hit it off immediately.

“In the first session we had made two songs that ended up being some of the best work on the album,” Sharif says, “and as we worked on it we knew we had something special that we weren't hearing anywhere else and we kept building on that”

Sharif found himself digging deeply in order to write, which he credits to Dove’s attention to detail and ability to push the boundaries sonically. “Dove’s production kept me in the zone to touch on stories that I never touched on in my past work, from personal situations tucked away that I thought I wasn't ready to unveil yet, to convos we just would have regarding the state of everything going on in the world and beyond”

For his part, Dove was consistently impressed by the young artists’ dedication, as well as his ear for the unusual. “It was almost like a challenge to him, if I had a beat that no one had chosen, or that had kinda strange timing, he would almost always choose that one”

This is Koyaanisqatsi via Rahway, New Jersey. A winding nighttime drive along the narrow, rutted paths of a damaged psyche, dead deer watching from the roadside. Decay is a candlelit spades game in the parlor of a dilapidated mansion, eviction papers pasted atop one another on the front door. A black Woodstock in the wetlands, blotter acid in the headband, as ELUCID might say. Together, Sharif and Dove just flipped on the power to a carousel in the middle of an abandoned amusement park, and every horse has a rider, spinning and spinning in the dark

“Sometimes in life, we feel held down, tested and sought after by an unseen force that we can’t fully explain,” Sharif muses, “this album is a trip into the foundation of the dysfunction that surrounds us all in one way or another”

The Trey Anastasio Band went on tour in January 2020 intending it to be a warm-up for studio dates. The band was firing on all cylinders, reflected by the fiery sets and intense crowds. The pandemic cancelled the studio plans but producer Vance Powell told Trey "there was already enough great material on tape from the tour to make the best TAB album ever." It was named Burn It Down, a line from 'Set Your Soul Free,' because it encapsulated exactly what had been happening onstage every night.

Just two months following the release of their fourth joint album, The OutRunners, Curren$y and Harry Fraud returned with a brand new project called The Director’s Cut. The longtime cohorts latest project features 9 tracks with guest appearances by Trippie Red, Larry June, Snoop Dogg and Styles P. Initially, the artists intended for The Director’s Cut to be a deluxe version of The Outrunners, but once they went to work they ended up with a standalone project. Curren$y describes the connection between The Director’s Cut and The OutRunners best: “It’s not a deluxe album, it’s the director’s cut of an underground film that garnered a nice bit of mainstream notoriety, with alternate endings, added scenes, secret characters and verses unlocked!

The Sad Clown Bad Dub series first started as a stringof limited cassette tapes and CD-R's for Atmosphere tosell exclusively on tour. Since its inception in 1999, theSad Clown series has seen over a dozen iterations innumerous formats, including rare 4-track demos, liverecordings, a DVD of behind-the-scenes tour footage, amixtape, 7" vinyl singles and more. To this day, one ofthe earliest volumes - Sad Clown Bad Dub 2 - stillremains one of the most celebrated and covetedinstallments from the series.Originally released in 2000, Sad Clown Bad Dub 2 wasa rather stripped-down DIY release - a simple CDtucked behind an illustrated cover with handwrittentracklist and liner notes. The recordings were equally asrough, consisting of a dozen raw 4-track demos thathadn't been treated to any sort of mixing or mastering.Although Atmosphere initially produced only 500 copiesof these CD's to sell on the road for extra cash, the buzzand the subsequent demand from fans eventually ledthe group to pressing more of the CD's, this time stampingthe cover art with the phrase "Authorized Bootleg" asa sly nod to those who'd been ripping and sharing thefiles. The unpolished nature of Sad Clown Bad Dub 2was no deterrent from the appeal of its contents though.Generally considered an underground classic in hip-hopcircles, Sad Clown Bad Dub 2 is often mentioned as oneof the standout releases in Atmosphere's extensivediscography. It is a deeply introspective project thatexplores a range of complex thoughts and emotions,counter-balanced by occasional moments of darklyhumorous sarcasm and wit. Slug's writing is sharp andinsightful with a knack for turning his personal strugglesinto universal themes that listeners can relate to. Ant'sproduction is minimalistic, moody, even eclectic innature, full of atmospheric textures and unconventionalrhythms. This release is very clearly one of the earlystepping stones in developing their unique anddistinctive sound together, helping...

Sleepy Soldier finds Tanna pushing the boundaries of his creative expression while embracing a certain emotional complexity in his storytelling. The core message of the album is love, humanity, endurance. He likes to describe it as “human music” because it’s very honest about the span of emotions we all go through in a single day on this planet—all the sadness and disappointment and stress and also the joy. In a perfect counterpart to that vast scope of feeling, Sleepy Soldier offers up such sonically eclectic tracks as “Picasso” (a punk-leaning anthem that transforms frustration into pure catharsis) and “Death n’ Taxes” (a gorgeously ethereal, guitar-laced piece graced with wisdom Tanna gained during a mind-expanding trip to the ocean).

The Apes make us feel like we’re at a tour show in Los Angeles with Main Source over dynamic dusty jazz-based beats with intelligent compositional arrangements by Frank John James and scratches by DJ Roach (The Cloaks with Awol ONE and Gel Roc). RJ’s career took off while performing under the name Reign Man. He was selected as a finalist for MTV’s Making The Band 2 by P Diddy, and six months later won the MTV MC Battle, landing him a deal with Def Jam Records. Due to unexpected events involving the firing of then Def Jam President, Kevin Liles, Reign Man’s music was unfortunately shelved. Back in Philly, Reign Man linked with Reed Dollaz and joined Top Klass, the city’s largest independent label. He was an integral part of the battle rap DVD era and had a cult following on the internet. His last battle was in 2015 where he won against Urls Ty Law. Reign Man decided to drop the stage name and start recording music under his real name - RJ Payne. He released seven albums in 2017 under Educated Ignorance Music Group. Four albums were tributes to the late rappers, Big L, Big Pun, Prodigy of Mobb Deep, and Sean Price with all of the beats completely reproduced by PA Dre. He has continued on his relentless grind dropping dope project after dope project, and once again teams with Memphis born/Erie raised producer PA Dre for Beautiful Payne 4. These days, the rapper has been leaning toward more songwriting than battle bars through his Beautiful Payne EPs. BP4 sheds more light on Payne's personal life and musical journey. From honoring his late mother on "Momma I Made It" to fighting the thought of having a child in today's world on "The Curse," the indie artist offers transparency over light-hearted soulful production that gives him room to speak, but keeps listeners nodding their heads. In just nine tracks and two artist features (King Iso and Buffalo's own L Biz), you're taken on a wild ride through elaborate storytelling with countless gems to take heed of. The project allows Payne's words to resonate until the very end. It's safe to say that RJ Payne and PA Dre have created an undeniable experience for all of us to enjoy.

Freddie is the fourth studio album from acclaimed rapper, Freddie Gibbs. One of the most consistent and polished artists from the blog era, Freddie Gibbs has yet to release an album that does not achieve widespread acclaim, proving that he’s able to compete in any era. At 10 tracks, the album comes at a blistering yet concise pace, showcasing his raw and energetic flow over thundering trap-influenced beats. Aside from a tasteful appearance from 03 Greedo, Freddie Gibbs mainly relies on himself to carry the album, and features production from hip-hop heavyweights such as Kenny Beats, Dupri, RichGains and more. Marking the 5 year anniversary since release, Freddie is back in print for the very first time.

Subway Hip Hop Records Vol 7 -- Broadway Junction Station EP

Broadway Junction is one of main transfer stations on the MTA Subway and Elevated train lines in East New York and the borough of Brooklyn. It’s where different train lines connect Brooklyn to the world. Like Broadway Junction, Subway Hip Hop Records brings together four of the best Brooklyn MCs for this limited vinyl EP:

Finsta - of "Finsta Bundy" fame- is one of the originators of the independent grimy New York boom bap 90's sound. On this EP he collaborates with DJ Direk (from Chicago) and brings the Timberland-wearing, hoodie-down ruggedness you've come to expect.

Shabaam Sahdeeq - of "Polyrhythm Addicts" fame- is another pioneer of that Brooklyn Golden Era sound. His expansive catalog of solo releases, group collaborations, and features cements his reputation as lyrical virtuouso. His contribution on this project, along with DJ Direk (from Chicago), reminds us of what makes him a legendary MC.

Napoleon Da Legend - Unquestionably, Brooklyn’s hardest working MC, with more releases, especially on vinyl, than anyone else in the last five plus years. Don't get it twisted, his output is 100% unadulterated skills, no filler. With DJ Tren (from France) on the beats, Napoleon's solo contribution is an unrelenting torrent of golden bars; he's truly in a class of his own here. On "Knife Play" he collaborates with Nejma Nefertiti over production from TherapyBeats (from Chicago) and demonstrates what happens when talented MCs go bar for bar -- Steel Sharpens Steel.

Nejma Nefertiti - The Queen from Brooklyn. Her hunger and fierce word play embarrasses Rolling Stone's Top 100 Rappers. Nejma Nefertiti's solo contribution over TherapyBeats’s (from Chicago) production brings verses inspired by "prophets and mystics.” When you hear this you're going to understand why it’s a certified classic and why we had to give it a bonus remix (featuring production by DJ 3RD Rail and Padawan).

Limited edition of 300 copies on 7" backed with the instrumental version. Comes with original single artwork.

Representing New Jersey to the fullest, Miilkbone stepped to the scene in 1994 with the piano-driven single "Keep It Real", followed by the full-length debut release "Da Miilkrate" in 1995.

In the ghetto landscapes of the Delaney projects in his hometown of Perth Amboy, New Jersey, hip hop became the soundtrack of Miilkbone's life. As b-boy kids bounced their ill pills with the mad swagger of basketball macks, the boo-boom of Rakim and Kool G Rap inspired the moods, grooves and attitudes of a new generation of rhyme slayers.

Mainly produced by the likes of former Illtown protégé Mufi, Naughty By Nature's very own Kay Gee and up-and-coming Nick Wiz, the album remains a highlight from the golden era in the catalogue of rap from New Jersey.

Available in a limited run on 2LP+7", extra 7" of "Keep It Real" in original artwork sleeve, CD in jewel case, cassette and digitally on all major platforms.

The most sought after HipHop Live-Album comes as a limited reissue.

The Roots Come Alive is a live album by the hip-hop group The Roots, released on November 2, 1999. This album captures the energy and musicianship of The Roots' live performances, showcasing their dynamic fusion of hip-hop, jazz, soul, and funk. It was recorded during various concerts in Europe and New York, giving listeners a front-row seat to one of the most revered live acts in hip-hop.

The Roots Come Alive is a live performance album that includes renditions of songs from their previous studio albums, as well as new improvisations and extended versions of tracks.
The Roots are known for their live instrumentation, a rarity in hip-hop at the time, and this album highlights their skills as a live band. Questlove (Ahmir Thompson) on drums and Black Thought (Tariq Trotter) as the lead MC, along with the rest of the band, exhibit a tight, cohesive sound with rich musical textures, showing their ability to translate their studio work into a live setting.

The album blends elements of hip-hop, jazz, funk, soul, and rock, reflecting The Roots' eclectic approach to music. It features live interpretations of their recorded tracks with a heavier emphasis on instrumental solos, improvised jams, and extended breakdowns that highlight the musicianship of the group. Unlike many hip-hop concerts that rely on pre-recorded tracks, The Roots perform with a full band, bringing a fresh and unique sound to each performance.

Key Tracks:
"Proceed" – A standout track, showcasing Black Thought’s lyrical dexterity with an extended instrumental jam.
"You Got Me" (featuring Erykah Badu and Jill Scott on the original studio version) – The live version is electrifying, with emotive vocals and powerful instrumentation that add extra depth to this already popular track.
"Essaywhuman?!!!??!" – A live favorite that features The Roots’ improvisational ability, blending live beatboxing, instrument solos, and crowd interaction.
"The Next Movement" – One of their hit singles, which gets a lively, expanded treatment in the concert setting, complete with additional grooves and audience interaction.
"Silent Treatment" – A jazzier, more relaxed live rendition of their classic from Do You Want More?!!!??!, with a focus on the band’s fluidity and Black Thought’s introspective lyrics.

The album does an excellent job of capturing the crowd interaction and the raw energy of The Roots' live shows. Audience cheers, call-and-response segments, and ad-libs contribute to the feel of being at a live concert. Questlove’s drumming, along with the band’s interplay, is a central feature throughout the performances, keeping the groove alive while allowing for spontaneous musical expression.

The album was well received by critics, who praised it for capturing the vitality of The Roots' live performances, which had earned them a reputation as one of the best live acts in hip-hop.
The Roots Come Alive was seen as a bold move, especially at a time when live albums were not common in the hip-hop genre. It reinforced The Roots' status as innovators, who brought an instrumental and performance-based approach to a genre dominated by turntablism and samples.

The album helped further The Roots’ reputation as a trailblazing group that could blend musicality with the raw essence of hip-hop, standing out among their contemporaries.
Their success with this live album also contributed to the growing appreciation of hip-hop as a form of live performance art, influencing other artists to explore live shows in more dynamic ways.
The Roots Come Alive is considered one of the most important live albums in the hip-hop genre, showing that the energy of a live band could be fused with the lyrical power of rap in a seamless, exciting way.

The album bridges the gap between studio precision and live improvisation, showcasing why The Roots were able to gain a wide-ranging fanbase across both hip-hop purists and lovers of live music. It stands as a testament to their creativity and musicianship.

Elwd presents his first ever collaborative project Monochrome - a transatlantic link-up featuring raps from Yungmorpheus, Vritra, Akai Solo, Nappynappa, Obijuan, Rahiem Supreme, Archibald Slim, and looms. In his own words: “Monochrome is about taking a step back, I wanted to create this unique atmosphere and feeling. Different to my other records, simple, yet complex in its thought and execution. I was thinking of monochrome as an idea instead of a visual meaning. Everything around us can be very complex but if you really narrow it all down it’s always two things - light and dark. Lancashire born, London based multi-instrumentalist and producer Tyler Ellwood uses a signature sample style blended with live instrumentation and never leans too much to one conventional style. Drawing inspiration from hip hop, jazz, the dreamy drift of ambient music, electronic, and yet eschewing conventionality and allegiance to any one genre.

deem spencer is getting into the flow. The 27-year-old Queens native retraces his upbringing while wading towards a hopeful future on his fourth album adultSW!M. On adultSW!M, deem's pensive mood hasn't left - it's evolved. deem showcases his evocative bars with collaborations alongside DRAM, MAVI, Orion Sun and additional production from MICHELLE's own Julian Kaufman, Pip & Stelios, Spenser Williams and others. An ode to finding serenity after the storm, deem's approach to his most ambitious project yet is equally meditative."Love brought me to this place where I'm thinking about building something that lasts and making something of myself," said deem. "It's started making me feel very mature in thinking about the future.""I wanted to create something intentional here; something that speaks to the future I am working to manifest and could live with me for years to come. The album was inspired by hopeful, romantic thoughts that see me attaining great success, starting a family and being a great provider. However, great nuance is provided as these thoughts are cautioned by fear and more morbid perceptions of the future. All in all, I do hope to start a family, build my home and a great legacy. But I'll have to do it as the water levels rise and the world burns down."

Yo! Boombox is the new instalment of Soul Jazz Records’ Boombox series on the early days of hiphop on vinyl and features some of the many innovative underground first-wave of early rap and disco rap records made in the USA in the period 1979-83. The album includes the first releases of seminal groups such as Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five and The Funky Four Plus One More through to a host of rarities and little-known obscurities such as the Carver Area High School band’s ‘Get Live 83’, an awesome record made at a Chicago high school. The album is released as a deluxe triple LP complete with 3x full inner sleeves of extensive sleeve notes, exclusive photography and original label artwork. There is also a very-limited one-pressing only special deluxe version that comes with an extra bonus super-rare 7” single of ‘Magic’s Rap’ by Magic’s Trick, aka ex-marine Magic Fraga, a record that was only ever available on US military bases! The album also comes as a deluxe double CD pack with 30-page booklet and slipcase. Yo! Boombox also features the stunning photography of Sophie Bramly, one of a very select group of photographers (alongside Henry Chalfant, Martha Cooper, and Joe Conzo) who were allowed full access to document the exciting early days of hip-hop in New York. These first exuberant wave of innocent, upbeat, party-on-the-block rap records were the first to try and create the sounds heard in community centres, block parties and street jams that first took place in the Bronx in the mid-1970s. Where the first DJs – Flash, Kool Herc and Bambaataa – were back-spinning, mixing and scratching together now classic breakbeat records like The Incredible Bongo Band’s Apache or Babe Ruth’s The Mexican, these first pre-sampling rap records were all made using live bands, often replaying then current disco tunes. As Chic’s ‘Good Times’ was to ‘Rappers’ Delight’, the songs here feature then-current dancefloor hits such as the Tom Tom Club’s ‘Genius of Love’, Cheryl Lynn’s ‘To Be Real’, MFSB’s ‘Love Is the Message’ while MCs rapped over the top, creating a unique new sound. In fact, the links between disco and rap date back earlier to the ‘party style’ MCing of figures such as the legendary DJ Hollywood or radio DJs like Frankie Crocker. This new Soul Jazz Records collection celebrates these first old-school rap records, bringing together rare, classic and obscure tracks released in the early days of rap.

I can remember back when Celestial Clockwork was released I told myself, “I will produce my final album” but rest assured, this is not my final album!

Autopilot is a new beginning for me. With 20 years of experience releasing projects, you are probably wondering how releasing another album is something new. This album is my first album where I’m displaying my vast array of skills: the lyrics (of course!), the production, the mixing and the photography is all me! Shout out to DJ Ginsu for the mastering and Ill Poetic for the album/vinyl layout.

It was important to me that I self produce a project at some point in my career. Autopilot is both the accomplishment and affirmation that I can achieve anything I set before myself by working hard and staying disciplined.

This album is not perfect. It’s not super clean or easy, but neither am I. Personally, I hate perfect albums because many times they are robotic and usually have no feeling. With Autopilot, you hear my heart in every word, soul in every kick, excitement in every snare snap and instrument. This is something special and I believe that it is one of my best! Thank you for riding with me all of these years and I hope that you stick around because I have so much more to give you. But for now, I give you the gift of Autopilot.

Deluxe edition vinyl which includes the original album plus 3 Resurrection remixes with liner notes featuring interviews with Common and NO I.D all in a beautiful gatefold jacket.

Get On Down is proud to present, Commons sophomore album, Resurrection. While the album was originally neglected by the mainstream, it has since received a great deal of critical acclaim and is now on The Sources 100 Best Rap Albums. In comparison to his debut album, Commons musical style evolved lyrically by his expressing of himself rather than just describing street life. With its Jazz and Hip Hop flavors, Resurrection furthered the growth of both genres. Overall, the album is commonly perceived as an underrated Rap classic and now this legendary album is available in a much anticipated, 2xLP gatefold jacket edition.

Resurrection was produced almost entirely by No I.D., who has gone on to work with heavyweights like Usher, Alicia Keys and Rihanna, and he recently produced the first two singles for Jay-Zs new album The Blueprint 3. In addition, No I.D. is credited as the man who introduced Kan ye West to Hip Hop production, inviting him to his sessions with Common when West was only starting out.

The 2xLP features the original 15 album tracks (all cuts remastered from the original masters) and three remixes of Resurrection. Two of the remixes were produced by the one and only Large Professor of Main Source fame and the third is another track by No I.D. The gatefold jacket art features in-depth liner notes written by Brian Coleman with Common and No I.D.
