NBN Archives is proud to debut a forthcoming series of Hip-Hop and R’n’B reissues with a little known Californian project from "108" a short lived Bay Area group which consisted of rappers Encore (Shaya Bekele) and Grand The Visitor (Everett Aknowledge) along with composer-producer Sedric Edwards. Originally released in 1996 in a very limited quantity of one hundred CD's, the album "Mission Infinite" never really got the attention it deserved until now.

By the mid 90s Encore and Grand had already been gravitating around the San Jose Hip-Hop scene, releasing music in connection with Bay Area Hip- Hop Icon Peanut Butter Wolf - both featuring on one of Wolf’s first 12’s “Step On Our Ego's?” (1996, South Paw Records). In the same year, Grand released his first solo single “The Visitor” on Blind Side Recordings produced by PB Wolf and Encore's first single was one of the very first releases on Stones Throw in 1997. Sedric Edwards was a sound engineer working locally when he met Chris Cut (aka PB Wolf). They set up a studio together where he met the two MC’s. According to Encore: "One day, Sedric was playing some of his Jazz-infused instrumentals in between sessions, and we were like: ‘We should try something with this!’”

All Eyez on Me is the fourth studio album by 2Pac and the last to be released during his lifetime. Released on 13th February, 1996, by Death Row and Interscope Records, the album features guest appearances from Dr. Dre, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Redman, Method Man, Nate Dogg, Kurupt, Daz Dillinger, E-40, K-Ci & JoJo, and the Outlawz, among others.

The album features productions by Shakur alongside a variety of producers including DJ Quik, Johnny “J”, Dr. Dre, DJ Bobcat, Dat Nigga Daz, DJ Pooh, DeVante Swing, among others.

The album includes the number-one singles “How Do U Want It” (featuring K-Ci and JoJo) and “California Love” (with Dr. Dre, featuring Roger Troutman) and the hip-hop ballad “I Ain’t Mad at Cha”, along with the Snoop Dogg collaboration “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted” as a promotional single. It featured four singles in all, the most of any of Shakur’s albums. Moreover, All Eyez on Me made history as the first ever double-full-length hip-hop solo studio album released for mass consumption globally.

All Eyez on Me was the second album by 2Pac to chart at number one on both the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts, selling 566,000 copies in the first week.

Upon release, All Eyez on Me received instant critical acclaim, and it has been ranked by critics as one of the greatest hip hop albums, as well as one of the greatest albums of all time. In 2020 the album was ranked 436th on Rolling Stone‘s updated list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

The sixth album from legendary hip-hop group Souls of Mischief, There Is Only Now, is a unique cinematic 90s crime
tale of love, loss, and revenge. A conceptual collaboration with producer Adrian Younge and the first release on his freshly launched Linear Labs Records label, There Is Only Now gets its inspiration from a near fatal incident involving group members A-Plus, Opio, Tajai, and Phesto early in their careers. Set in 1994, There Is Only Now serves as a bookend to two decades of music since the release of their seminal debut album, ‘93 Til Infinity.

There Is Only Now sees the Souls of Mischief crew members trading bars with a cast of hip-hop and soul luminaries.
Narrated by A Tribe Called Quest member Ali Shaheed Muhammed—as DJ for fictional local Oakland radio station K-NOW—the album’s story unfolds under his all-seeing eye. Busta Rhymes makes an appearance as the story’s villain, Womack, on “Womack’s Lament,” while William Hart of the legendary vocal soul group, The Delfonics, lends his buttery falsetto to the contemplative “Another Side of You.” Snoop Dogg drops knowledge on the situation between Stoney and Womack with an ice cold verse on the title track “There Is Only Now,” and Scarub from Living Legends goes in on “Stone Cold.”

When an emcee finds a producer who fuels his verbals, he keeps him close. Atoms Fam, Hangar 18, and Def Jux alumnus, Alaska found just such a fire in steel tipped dove on last year’s The Structural Dynamics of Flow. A journeyman in the pits, dove’s credits run way below the surface of things, and his pedigree shows in his ability to keep the rig moving no matter. Once again on the black circles is the inimitable Marcus Pinn, steady adding nitrous to the mix. Over numerous releases in the last few years including two from 2023 alone, Alaska has settled into a style as mature as it is versatile. He knows the course comfortably now, so he can take the turns, open it up, and just drive.

Along for the ride this time are PremRock and Curly Castro (a.k.a. ShrapKnel), who with Zilla Rocca, make up three-fourths of the Wrecking Crew. All appear on different tracks here, not that keeping them separated blunts their impact in the least. Prem and The Prophet, Fatboi Sharif, are Alaska’s accomplices on “Murder by Numbers,” and fellow Atoms Family member Cryptic One joins Zilla and Alaska on “Disappearing Acts.” There’s also Bateria, a.k.a Jedi Son of Spock, on “Imposter” and Sleeping Dogs on “Vulture Stones,” among others. Those guys are all undeniably dope, but they’re only passengers here.

Alaska never lets you forget who’s behind the wheel as he drops lyrical references to everything from classic slashers and Wu-Tang to Violent Femmes and Hunter S. Thompson. It’s fun, but it’s serious. You can feel the aging aches of “Mild for the Night” in your lower back. You can also feel the frustration on “Hundred Dollar Bills” when Alaska raps, “Yeah, I’m a nihilist, but only ‘cause I’m tired of shit.” Word to the dead man’s ego.

The Sad Clown Bad Dub series first started as a stringof limited cassette tapes and CD-R's for Atmosphere tosell exclusively on tour. Since its inception in 1999, theSad Clown series has seen over a dozen iterations innumerous formats, including rare 4-track demos, liverecordings, a DVD of behind-the-scenes tour footage, amixtape, 7" vinyl singles and more. To this day, one ofthe earliest volumes - Sad Clown Bad Dub 2 - stillremains one of the most celebrated and covetedinstallments from the series.Originally released in 2000, Sad Clown Bad Dub 2 wasa rather stripped-down DIY release - a simple CDtucked behind an illustrated cover with handwrittentracklist and liner notes. The recordings were equally asrough, consisting of a dozen raw 4-track demos thathadn't been treated to any sort of mixing or mastering.Although Atmosphere initially produced only 500 copiesof these CD's to sell on the road for extra cash, the buzzand the subsequent demand from fans eventually ledthe group to pressing more of the CD's, this time stampingthe cover art with the phrase "Authorized Bootleg" asa sly nod to those who'd been ripping and sharing thefiles. The unpolished nature of Sad Clown Bad Dub 2was no deterrent from the appeal of its contents though.Generally considered an underground classic in hip-hopcircles, Sad Clown Bad Dub 2 is often mentioned as oneof the standout releases in Atmosphere's extensivediscography. It is a deeply introspective project thatexplores a range of complex thoughts and emotions,counter-balanced by occasional moments of darklyhumorous sarcasm and wit. Slug's writing is sharp andinsightful with a knack for turning his personal strugglesinto universal themes that listeners can relate to. The Beastie Boys sophomore album i reissued on 180g vinyl. How about that?

Almost a miracle that this sample-loaded milestone gets a reissue.

The German Rolling Stone Magazine had this album at no.16 on their all-time hip hop album top 50 list and Pitchfork media even had it on no. 3 on their "Best Albums of the 80s"-list.

After the release of debut record Gris-Gris, Dr. John found himself in a strange and awkward position. The US was deep into the Vietnam War, and the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Bobby Kennedy were fresh in the public memory. On top of that, Dr. John was being pursued by various Los Angeles authorities for a handful of criminal offenses. It was, in his own words: "a heavy time for me." Much like Sly & The Family Stone's There's A Riot Goin' On, Dr. John's follow-up album Babylon would be a reflection of the chaotic and tumultuous time that he was living in. He and band dove deeper into the voodoo-inflected psychedelic rock and R&B of Gris-Gris, while touching upon elements of free jazz and Captain Beefheart-style avant garde. As with his debut record, production was handled by the legendary Harold Battiste, and much of the same session personnel who performed on it returned for Babylon, including Plas Johnson on saxophone, Alvin Robinson on guitar, and backing vocals from Jessie Hill, Shirley Goodman, and Tami Lynn. Babylon stands out as one of Dr. John's most overtly political albums, and is a singularly murky and darkly entrancing record in his discography. A psychedelic swamp of apocalyptic lyrical content, drunk, disorienting experimentation, and a fascinating entry into Dr. John's catalogue well-worthy of his expansive legacy. Get On Down is all too eager to reissue this unique record for Record Store Day Black Friday, which has not been repressed on vinyl in over 40 years. Discovered by RZA, this Californian group was the first from the West Coast to be signed by Wu-Tang in 1997. The group later separated into two groups: Black Knights and Northstar who kept working closely together. They made key appearances on the albums “Wu-Tang Killa Beez: the Swarm” (Platinum), “The Sting” (Gold) plus numerous RZA soundtracks such as “Ghostdog”, “Afro Samurai” and all the Bobby Digital projects.

Black Knights consisted of Crisis (The Sharpshooter), Rugged Monk, Doc Doom (R.I.P) and The Holocaust while Northstar is Christ Bearer and Meko The Pharaoh. For the first time in history since they separated ways around 2000, they have reunited to record a collective album as RZA envisioned when he signed them.

The album, called “Northstar on the Blackest Night” features all members including the late Doc Doom and Holocaust who has been on hiatus. It has solid production from Skarekrow and RZA who also features along side Ghostface Killah, Cappadonna and Kurupt and definitely proves why they are the founding and fore fathers of the West Coast Wu-Tang Killa Beez movement

Black Milk, one of the most prodigious and versatile talents in the world of hip-hop, returns alongside his band Nat Turner with a live instrumental LP, The Rebellion Sessions, a jazz-funk opus recorded over the span of one week.

Orchestrated and produced by Black Milk, The Rebellion Sessions features Nat Turner (Aaron “Ab” Abernathy on keys, Malik Hunter on bass, and Zebulun “Z” Horton on drums). Although the guys have appeared on Black’s previous works, The Rebellion Sessions is the first project created by the four as a collaborative unit. The album, at times recalling the works of Fela Kuti, Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, Sly & The Family Stone, D’Angelo, and Robert Glasper, builds off Black Milk and Nat Turner’s incredible live show, honed over the course of years and more than 90 shows played worldwide in 2015 alone. Black Milk & Nat Turner will embark on The Rebellion Tour in Europe this May, performing select tunes from The Rebellion Sessions in addition to songs from Black Milk’s extensive catalog, before hitting the road in the States.

Their third full-length release, originally released back in 2005. Blackalicious produced a record of such sonic depth and lyrical ambition it proudly stands alongside the work of Bay Area funk fathers Sly Stone and Shuggie Otis, or hip-hop classics like Outkast's Aquemini and The Roots' Things Fall Apart. Lyricist Gab (âÇÿ June 18, 2021) moved beyond the introspection of earlier albums, going deep on "Black Diamonds and Pearls" as a pregnant teen conquers her fears, while on the epic "The Fall and Rise of Elliott Brown", a lost, incarcerated boy trans?forms into a leader of his community. What Gab achieved lyrically, Xcel accomplishes musically, with beats that touch on classic funk sidling cosily alongside the orchestral sweep of Stereolab. "The Craft," Xcel says, "is our passion to bring discipline to this music, the passion to keep growing, keep stretching, keep doing things we haven't before. The Craft is what we live for."

Somewhere in between the rock-star mischief of the Beastie Boys and the slow-creeping funk of Dr. Dre, Cypress Hill introduced their hazy-eyed sound to the world on their self-titled 1991 debut and things have never quite been the same since. The original Cypress Hill album captures the group at their risk-taking best, mixing gangster posturing, LA street politics, Latin flavor and warped humor together under a thick cloud of weed smoke and innovative beats. Nasal-voiced rapper B-Real and his partner Sen Dog, backed by the adventurous production styles of DJ Muggs, produce classics records like "How I Could Just Kill a Man," "Pigs," "Stoned is the Way of the Walk" and "Hand on the Pump." Since its release, the album has won acclaim as one of Rolling Stone's "Essential Recordings of the 90s" and "Top 100 Best Rap Albums" by The Source magazine.

Cypress Hill’s self-titled debut album was hard as nails, with very few pop concessions. There was humor, but it was laced by cackling, homicidal sneering. Not well known outside of the hardcore hip-hop scene at first, faces of the three group members weren’t usually shown clearly in press photos; they preferred the shadows. As their first singles began hitting the airwaves and record racks, the press and music fans started to take notice. From the opening notes of the group’s first single, “The Phuncky Feel One,” to deeper album cuts like “Stoned Is The Way Of The Walk” and “Tres Equis,” it was clear that Cypress Hill was something different. And very, very dope.
The world Cypress Hill espoused was gang-ridden and far from cheery, but they managed to laugh through the pain. Lead rapper B-Real took each fuzzed-out, rock-hard DJ Muggs beat as a challenge, jumping around it like a spark off a joint as it makes its way to the concrete. MC Sen Dog always had B-Real’s back, to bringintensity and a no-bullshit gruffness that made the group both menacing and unpredictable. When they introduced percussionist Eric Bobo to the mix in the early 90s, it brought new dimension to the band, making their live performances one of the most unique and accomplished shows in hip-hop. Journalist and author Chris Faraone highlights the group’s relationship in the reissue’s liner notes (which is included only in limited edition Skull) saying, “[By the late ‘80s] the undisputed
Cypress unit finally formed. B and Sen realized that their diametric styles - the latter’s deep wrangle, the former’s inimitable high notes -
complemented one another righteously. By then Muggs had bangers in the bag, as well as industry experience from a jaunt with the New York duo 7A3. B and Sen waited while Muggs messed with 7A3, and in that time began to build the blueprint for their raucous and weeded no-holds-barred style. Besides getting schooled on industry pitfalls, Muggs had also grown into hip-hop’s most formidable young producer, while straddling the bi-coastal gap.” Cypress Hill’s debut went gold by the end of 1991 and has since pushed past double platinum status, making it the first album for a Latino-American hip hop group to do so. The album received raves from the likes of Rolling Stone and the Los Angeles Times, saw a #1 Hot Rap Single with the release of “The Phuncky One” and helped the band win Artist Of The Year at the 1992 Source Awards. After 25 years, it should come as no surprise that Cypress Hill is a cornerstone of the group’s live set to this day.

So much legendary hip-hop begins with a misunderstanding. You might not realise it on first or even hundredth listen, but ‘Insane in the Brain’ is a diss track. What has become one of the hip-hop’s most iconic party anthems, and one of Cypress Hill’s biggest hits, started out with them taking offence at Chubb Rock.
He’d flipped some of their lyrics on his own ‘Yabba Dabba Doo’ song in 1992 and the group didn’t like it. While B-Real’s lyrical attack on Chubb is subtle and almost subliminal, Sen Dog spends most of his verse making fat jokes at Chubb’s expense.
It’s a little known beef, hidden beneath the vast success of this single in 1993, with it reaching number one in the US rap charts and proving a pop hit worldwide too. At this stage, the group’s producer DJ Muggs had perfected an idiosyncratic sound all of his own, lending it to tracks for the likes of House of Pain and Funkdoobiest.

Here he melds samples from Sly and the Family Stone and The Youngbloods with a beat lifted from George Semper’s instrumental cover of ‘Get out my life, woman’. Those subtle songs are alchemised into a boot-stomping head-nodder that transcended hip-hop to become a festival favourite, a rise that ended in Ned Flanders delivering the line, “this may sound just a teensy bit insane in the old membrane, Homer,” in The Simpsons.

The only official 7” of this was released in the Philippines, and fetches prices in the hundreds of pounds – this reissue puts a hip-hop classic in crate-friendly form.

Named after a street name in South Gate, California, Cypress Hill was the first Latino American hip-hop group reaching the multi-platinum status in the U.S. On this live album they rewrote some of their older tunes to hard-rock beats, with backup courtesy of SenDog's metal group SX-10, like 'A To The K', 'Lick A Shot', and 'I Ain't Goin' Out Like That'. There is also their stoner songs, like 'I Wanna Get High' and 'Stoned Is The Way Of The Walk'. The foundation stone for DC+ (lp) was laid in spring 2020 during the lockdown. The studio in the Deltaareal in Langendorf near Solothurn, Switzerland became a place of refuge and making music together became a creative outlet.The two Musicians often met by chance for sound sessions in which the first sounds of the instrumental LP were created. Electronic and yet acoustic. Relaxing and yet driving. Sometimes abstract, sometimes straightforward. With influences of jazz, hip-hop, soul, funk and electronic sounds. In collaboration with Waynemaster Studio in Bern, an album with a warm, mellow sound and high dynamics was created which stands out pleasantly from the current "loudness war" of over-compressed productions. Two Artists, close Friends of many years and masters of their trade have been enlisted to design the album cover. With the release of DC+ (lp) in winter 2023, Delta Collective is setting a first sign and inviting the listener to immerse themselves in to their cosmos.

Funkdoobiest is an American rap group from Los Angeles, California.
The original members were Son Doobie, DJ Ralph M and Tomahawk Funk. Which Doobie U B? is the debut studio album by the Latino rap group Funkdoobiest.
DJ Muggs was the executive producer for this album. Tracks on the album are performed by Son Doobie and Tomahawk Funk, including additional Cypress Hill member B-Real on the track "Wopbabalubop".
Hence the album is very much in line with the Cypress Hill productions. "It all works anyway", according to Allmusic review writer Steve Huey, he continues "Muggs is in his absolute prime as a producer here, and Son Doobie's rhymes are fittingly surreal and stoner-friendly, albeit more cartoonish than menacing like his Cypress counterpart".
The album title derived from a line in an episode of the 1970s sitcom What's Happening!!, when the main character, Raj, is introduced to special guests The Doobie Brothers.

Rapper Grandmilly (of Raider Klan/Zeroklique) has been quietly yet consistently putting out quality projects since 2012 – most notably an EP with Bones and a 2015 LP with SageInfinite. Shozae, a producer who is part of Long Island's Midnite Society, has been a close collaborator of Grandmilly for years. Grup Ses, Istanbul based veteran beatmaker returns to Souk after 2 years with first fully instrumental album since 2011's sought after 'Beats and Pieces from Turkish Psychedelia'.

Grup Ses project dates back to 2007 which at the time focused on v/vm style edits and breakcore infused mash ups. Starting from 2008 Grup Ses started to build a version of Stones Throw & Brainfeeder influenced beatmaking mixed with a touch of humour. A blend including all kinds of local recorded material like records, tapes, radio broadcasts etc., which became the building blocks of signature Grup Ses sound.

'Beats from the vaults' is a showcase of beatmaking aesthetics Grup Ses visited between 2008 and 2021. Including various cuts available only on soundcloud plus unheard material compiled just for this album.

After years of building while modestly deferring to others of both greater and lesser notoriety, Dilla finally completed the first solo endeavor on his own label, entirely on his own terms. The significance of such an autonomous success often gets overlooked, and partly accounts for why Ruff Draft is one of the lesser-referenced entries in Dilla’s oeuvre. “It’s a mysterious little project,” says his mother, Maureen Yancey. “But out of his entire career, that was the happiest time.” Prior to recording the EP, Dilla found himself at a crossroads. Estranged from his label, MCA, and separated from the mother of his youngest daughter, frustration abounded both personally and professionally. Dilla spent parts of 2002 and 2003 working on an album for MCA that featured his rapping over contributions from other producers with whom he had connected and whose music he respected. At the time, he was known primarily for his beats, yet reviled for his MCing by most anyone not from his hometown of Detroit. The project was to be an intentional freak of the industry. The project would go on to spur his collaborative album with Madlib, Jaylib, and would first showcase the template that he would take to his greatest heights with 2006’s Donuts. The Stones Throw reissue of Ruff Draft from 2008 featured remixes of the songs from the album, done without Dillaís involvement.
