During the past decade, the Chicago-based multiinstrumentalist and producer, NNAMDI, has quietly become one of the most prolific musicians of the modern era. Whether under his own name or one of the many bands he's spent time in, either as a full-on member or merely a touring partner, there's been an endless stream of music that NNAMDI has had his hands in. Pair that with the fact he co-owns his label, Sooper Records (KAINA, Sen Morimoto), and it'd be easy to wonder how he finds time to do anything other than make music. On BRAT, the follow-up to 2017's critically acclaimed DROOL, NNAMDI removes the veil to show just how much effort and energy it takes to work at such a high level without any breaks. That process of finding a balance between NNAMDI the performer and Nnamdi Ogbonnaya the person is what fuels BRAT, an introspective record that's still as dexterous and exciting as anything that's come before, but is intimate and hushed, commanding a listener's full attention from the very start. Like all things he's done before, BRAT proves that genre classifications don't really work here. BRAT is part hip-hop, part indie-rock, part gospel, and part West African music, and in NNAMDI's hands, these seemingly disparate pieces fit together snuggly, as if there was never a question of their compatibility. NNAMDI wrote, performed, and recorded BRAT by himself.

Elcamino is one of the most important talents emerging from Buffalo, New York currently, and yet he’s still treated as the stepchild of Griselda. As with Benny The Butcher before him, he’s been quietly playing the background until it’s his time. However, considering the momentum he built in 2019 and what he has planned for 2020, that time might be right now.

After dropping his self-titled debut in early 2018, Camino appeared on almost every track on Benny’s "A Friend of Ours" EP the same year. He then followed that up with a strong sophomore effort titled "Walking On Water." In 2019 the baby-faced Buff rapper dropped his third LP, "Don’t Eat The Fruit," the well-received "Lot and Abraham" EP, a joint project with Dutch beat architect Oh Jay titled "Where’s My Pyrex?," and finished the year strong with his "Elcamino 2" album.

You would think that would be enough to start getting on the media’s radar, but as to not leave anything to chance, he just dropped yet another album today titled "Martyrs Prayer." This offering is fully produced by in-demand multi-hyphenate 38 Spesh. The sole feature on the record is by the buzzing Trust Army lieutenant Che Noir on a track titled “2K20.”

So, you might have two questions.

1. What is ecovinyl?

If a records get pressed in different colorways, chemics are used to clean up the machine and interrupt the process. When using the ecovinyl way, those chemics are not used and the next color balls are just thrown in close to the finish of the colorway that is pressed before. In this case they pressed black before white, so the vinyl will not be 100% white but each vinyl will be unique thanks to the process. So the first record pressed as white will have a big black influence and will turn out partly black, grey, white, the last one will be entirely white.

2. Who is Natia The God?

Raised in North Inglewood on the Wu bible, but blessed with a musicality that fits into the sound of the new West Coast, Natia sounds starkly apart.

The "Natia the God LP" blends raw stab-you-in-your-nosebone raps with weary haunted melodies — ones that possess the weird beauty that indie singer songwriters disappear into the forest for six months to try to find.

Highly recommended if you love Purple Tape-era Raekwon and Ghostface, early Eminem and the wild blunt haze griminess of Redman. But there’s only one Natia.

Washington Heights, NY rhyme duo Pearl Gates and Syll return with the second installment of their “Play This” series.
“Play This 2”, the full-length will drop via Below System Records and is the follow up to the first EP installment (which dropped back in 2016). “Play This” the EP’s narrative was introducing the listener to their hood from the heights to the dark underbelly. Being that Gates has been on several international tours following the first EP and Syll has been making moves as a songwriter for other artists, their worldview has grown since and is reflected on this album. As Gates says, “Play This 2” is “a collective story of our experiences and meant to take the listener on a journey with us. To reflect this journey, the beats are wide ranging and should appeal to a progressive audience who enjoys a traditional Hip-Hop sound as well as blend of trap, inviting melodies and a chill vibe.” One example of this vibe is the album’s first single “Kingz” which features appearance from West Coast lyricist, Blu, with the beat laced by French producer, C0rrado (who produced the entire first EP). Speaking on the link-up with Blu, Gates said “I spent some time in Los Angeles working on some tracks for Blu & Exile and Blu reciprocated with a dope verse.” It should be said that in addition to his prowess as an emcee, Pearl Gates is adept as a singer as well and has lent melodic hooks to tracks by Masta Ace, Kool G Rap and eMC. This melodicism is in effect throughout “Play This 2” which blends more modern era production and moody boom-bap provided by Frankie P (A$AP Ferg, Meek Mill), Sirplus, EyeDee (Heem Stoogied, Ty Farris), DJ Soulclap, Jay Notez and Quincey Tones (who worked with Pearl Gates on his collaborative album with Wordsworth, “Champion Sounds”).

Enyoutee is the DJ behind the No Ideas Original Radio Show on 91.3fm WVKR in
Poughkeepsie, NY. He is also the artist who brought together Fresno's finest, Planet
Asia, and DITC's next gen repper Milano Constantine, for this dope project. This
5-track extended player is chock full of that Golden Era Hip-Hop heads can't get
enough of. The tightly woven wordplay here is likely to take multiple listens to truly
appreciate. The beats on the other hand thump from the first snare and are provided
by fresh talent like Rebelxgenius, BodyBag Ben, Cool FD, DiFuture, as well as
Milano himself. The sole guest on the EP is Baltimore up-n-comer Jay Royale.
