Finding a rich seam in stark minimalism, soundsystem pressure and fractalised rhythm, Cassius Select is at the vanguard of contemporary broken beats and punishing low end.

This new Select transmission comes correct on Bruk, prodding at the same bold dance futurism already laid down by Siete Catorce and FFT, whilst sounding nothing like either of them. 'Dread Percent's swelling pads and dislocated MC shards are a foil for the ruff angles of 'Fish Tek'. 'Mess Mutual' teases and stalks at a lower tempo and then twists up another set of bars over a bed of alien drone, laying the groundwork for the massive, grime-licked hooks of 'Shake Like Me'.

Hinting at the anthemic while remaining steadfastly cool and deadly, Cassius Select's mutant brand of club has the space and versatility to slip between scenes, doing damage wherever it lands.

Fatima's debut album is called ‘Asiatisch’, and as the track titles suggest, the record provides a simulated road trip through an imagined China. Musically, the album is an homage to that quietly influential sub-strain of grime, often loosely termed 'sinogrime' due to its preoccupation with Asian motifs and melodies, pioneered by the likes of Wiley and Jammer at the beginning of the 2000s in East London.

'Asiatisch' is a provocation which asks more questions than it answers. The title is the German word for Asian. Unlike its title, however, the music on 'Asiatisch' revolves around the fantasies of East Asia as refracted through pulpy Western pop culture, in particular Hollywood, literary fiction, music, cartoons and advertising. Fatima asks what is meant by the term 'Asian' in a digital age of viral interchange and the hi-speed trading of cultural bytes; the concept of 'shanzhai' proves pivotal, a term whose meaning stems from a wild, out of control zone of banditry, but which has come to be used to refer to the Chinese counterfeiting of Western brands and goods.

While a number of producers have made takes on 'sinogrime' over the last few years, 'Asiatisch' is really the first record that attempts to articulate this weird complex of sonic interchanges between the West and China.

Two years since his Going For It EP, Livity Sound is pleased to welcome back Sydney’s DJ Plead for a second round of versatile, psychedelic club variations. Since debuting around 2018 Plead has forged a distinctive sound which focuses on inventive use of percussion and elegant melodic hooks that draw lines between global dance music cultures without adhering to any fixed formula.

From the carnival futurism of lead track ‘Come Quick’ to the infectious reggaeton lilt and understated trance synths of ‘El Es’, Plead presents a sound as playful as it is serious, predominantly exploring the 100 bpm tempo range. Shaped out by acutely angled rhythms, shifting time signatures and bold licks, Quick EP further establishes him as a vital, individual talent with the kind of flexible club tracks that bend between scenes and inject vibrant energy into the dance. Livity Sound is a label set up by Peverelist in 2011 as a vehicle for a raw and exploratory strain of UK techno, rooted in the heritage of UK dance music and sound system culture. It has since become one of the UK's foremost protagonists for cutting edge underground electronic music.

Bristol native Daffy returns to Shall Not Fade with his second solo EP, focusing on the darker aspects of 4x4 garage.

The title track typifies Daffy's unique and forward-thinking take on UKG. The dynamic chant of a dancehall MC is ramped up to invigorate a UKG stomper, the product: a rude, flavoursome track which evokes Spooky and Riko Dan's "High Power". Serious. The aptly-named "Darker Days" is more reminiscent of El-B with cool-toned low end growls before "Take It Easy" and "Warped" bring things to an energetic close with a stomping 4x4 rhythm and warped bassline which nod to old school speed garage.

Montreal duo Biochip return to Central Processing Unit with their new LP Crux Alley. The pair of Melissa Speirs and Julian Kochanowski turned plenty of heads when they first rocked up on the Sheffield label back in 2019 with debut drop Synthase. Synthase found Biochip twisting up Braindance, IDM and electro to their own ends, and Crux Alley is an album which hits similar sonic sweet-spots.
It's clear from the off that Biochip have brought their A-game here. Opener 'Mind Bubbles' has no time for pleasantries, dropping the listener straight into a nocturnal IDM-electro groove where bass dances nervily around shadowy synth pads. 'Mind Bubbles' is followed-up 'Polymorphic State', a tune whose laser-gun synth-bass plumbs even more energy into the pair's Rephlex-indebted sound. It's a hugely arresting way to begin an album, and the bold sonics here align Crux Alley with recent CPU releases like Bit Folder's Silicon Frontier and Annie Hall's Fum.
Other tracks on Crux Alley ease up on the frenzied feel of those opening numbers. Take 'Orbital Rendezvous', a cut which is still full of zippy melodies and keening keyboards but whose contemplative strut recalls the legendary electronic music duo referenced in the track's title. There's also a distinct cyberpunk flavour to this track, and this is brought out further on the vivid 'Dopamine City' and 'Tower 13' - it is at these points where Biochip most resemble the work of fellow CPU act B12.
Biochip record their music straight from the mixing desk, an approach that gives their tracks a spontaneous energy and one which sometimes leads Speirs and Kochanowski into novel sonic terrain. Crux Alley's 'Antagonist Part 6', for instance, is a spiritual successor to Synthase's 'Acid Billy' in how the overload of electronics almost pushes it into industrial-techno territory. Furthermore, while most of the LP draws on the Detroit electro continuum of Drexciya, DJ Stingray et al, 'Neutral Current' obliquely recalls the jazz-tinged house of Theo Parrish - although the wobbling synth chords and reverb-laced drums make 'Neutral Current' sound more like an extra-terrestrial reimagining of the Motor City legend's music.
Biochip continue to mark themselves out as one of contemporary electro's most exciting new acts with the Crux Alley LP.

It's time to clock up more Air Miles here as the small but well-formed label invites Supreems for another excursion into emotional yet robust breakbeats. 'Being' floats above the dancefloor on perfect frictionless drum loops that lurch to and fro and 'Touch' is a deep space trip with pensive cosmic pads and delightfully delicate but dynamic breaks. There is more weight and crispy texture to the zoned out sounds of 'Running Back', then 'Soft Spring' brings a heart aching female vocal to a loose cluster of beats, breaks, hits and churchy chords. 'Yunnan' shuts things down with a dark yet alluring energy. There is great craft in these cuts as well as plenty of dancefloor clout.

Mexican producer Siete Catorce treads the line of experimental club masterfully, drawing influence from Latin American styles and futuristic techno abstractions. Catorce has released on imprints such as Nostro Hood System, Naafi and Hypermedium as well as launching his own label Subreal in 2019 with collaborator Amazondotcom, on which they have released two EP's traversing deconstructed club. His new EP 'Temperatura' is a masterful exploration into club hybridity.

For the A-side, opener 'Todo' is straight-up otherworldly techno, combining fluctuating mutant birdsong and dub tones that center around unrelenting polyrhythms, whilst 'Derretido' flourishes industrial clangs with deviant frequencies. The B-side spirals on full-blown psychedelia into an unpredictable space between experimental tech and bass. 'Menos's extraterrestrial synth-work and blurred edges sound like a stripped-down early dub hybrid. 'Tu' featuring collaborator Biuddha employs smoky field recordings atop a shuffling post-dubstep heartbeat and euphoric snares. Combining fractured sound design with indisputable rhythm, this release is a formidable and unique addition to the experimental club bracket.

DJ Pantha joins the Time Is Now family serving up a weighty cut of bassline driven goodness. Born and raised in Dudley DJ Pantha's career began in 2007 and this saw the start of hits such as 'Bully boys', 'They can't do it' and the most successful to date 'Candy Shop'. DJ Pantha is one of the pioneers of Bassline and has spent the past 14 years mastering his craft, now finding himself with his own unique sound. Pantha links up with Bristol based label Time Is Now for his first vinyl release.

Oblrec003 is a must-have for any UKG or breaks enthusiast with contributions from across the globe. On the A-Side, Columbia's Espresso Bandini (aka Nicolas Duque) delivers "The Network" - guaranteed to devastate many dance floors with a deep bassline, infectious groove, and memorable melodies. He's joined by Brussels-based Enrico Dragoni, who serves up a very clean cut of UKG with "Dangeeeer". The track features subtle hints of obscurity and a unique approach to UKG, which no doubt secures him as someone to watch out for. But that's not all! Now they link up with Oldboy who appeared on Burnski's other label Vivid back in 2022. As you should expect these are four hardcore and rudely garage cuts with plenty of swagger, naughty samples and bass-face potential. 'On My Way' is the standout with its shuffling one-two drum punch, distant police sirens and warped basslines underneath a timeless and irresistible female vocal full of soul. The latest by UK rave reanimator Low End Activist is a nine-track suite of skeletal hardcore, pointillist drum n bass, and deprivation chamber dub, chopped and brewed in homage to the countryside sites of golden age dance gatherings: Airdrop. From Waterstock to Yarnton Road to White Horse Hill, England’s early 90’s dance summits loomed large in LEA's familial and artistic landscape as a youth, trading tapes and pumping tunes across long weekend afternoons: “Fast music to soundtrack slow days.”

An atomized stew of stabby samples, bubbling bass, airhorns, echo, and blitzed BPMs, the cuts take cues from key heroes of the “where were you in ‘92” set – Tango & DJ Ratty, Top Buzz, DJ SS, DJ Seduction, Dr. S Gachet – then fling them to the four corners. Skittery, stripped, and elevated, this is mad scientist music of voltage, vision, and rewired brains, scraped to its raw genetic essence and deployed for peak kinetic liberation.

Edition Hawara’s fifth release is a raw funk gem by a little-known Austrian pop band called Magic Sound. Edition Hawara’s second 7“release features one of the more obscure Austrian bands from the 1980s. Little is known about Magic Sound. The cover suggests that their label wanted them to be Austria’s Village People, though their sound is much rawer and funkier. One thing we know for sure is that the group included Andy Töfferl, who was also a member of the famous Austrian pop ensemble EAV (Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung). And we know that they went to the studio to record a whole album after touring Sweden in 1980. Only these two songs survived, and they are worth listening to over and over again. Enjoy in fancy dress, or dressed down. With or without a moustache.

After stellar releases on Ilian Tape and Nostro Hood Soundsystem among others, ,,Mutualism” represents the much-awaited return of Atrice on their own label Miras. The follow-up EP reflects the culmination of a year-long exploration of compositional techniques and sound design, and acts as a first step towards a debut album. The result is a complete work, divided into eight chapters, that applies previous artistic research on textures, harmonics and rhythms in a rigorous yet playful manner. Whilst continuing to touch upon a broad spectrum of uptempo reference points, ,,Mutualism” offers a first glimpse into the pairs underlying pliancy next to the ever-present intricate complexities in their output.

In an inspiring collaboration uniting artists from different corners of Europe and the Middle East, Palestine's Muqata'a, French-Irish Zoë McPherson, and Lebanon's Rabih Beaini have merged their creative forces to remix the Belgian/Iraqi band Use Knife's influential album 'The Shedding Of Skin'.

'Peace Carnival', released on Berlin’s Morphine Records, challenges the narrative around peace through its percussion, glitches, distortions, and Muslimgauze-esque minimalism to critique and rethink perceptions of justice and freedom.

This year, Carnival's usual satire and mockery should be directed towards the so-called and one-sided definition of 'peace'.

This remix compilation, affirming the friendship across both sides of the former Iron Curtain, is released by a bunch of music lovers in association with the independent label Xion (xionlabel.bandcamp.com), right in the heart of Europe, the city of Prague. Enter "Holan Remixed" – a full tribute to Ota Pavel's and Luboš Fišer's work and its typical poetics, compiled from six electronic music remixers. UK based pioneer of atmospheric drum'n'bass Lucida represents the west side, while Sintez, a skilled producer hails from the east side with his deep dnb roller. The rest are 3 guys from the Czech republic – Rabbit with his 2 reworks, one in breakbeat rhythm and 2nd with mellow deep dubstep vibe. Prague based owner of Pathfinder Records Title brings his vision of deep drum and bass and Martin Kuška closes the whole EP with an ambient piece.

Duo Lucas Brell and Marvin Uhde deliver fire-powered percussion to Osàre! Editions. Longtime friends and collaborators, they channel a liquid medley of drum menace that flips sideways, swiftly pivoting between wildly different tempos. As disorientating as it is formidable, Purest State Confusion offers up a fractal prism of ever-shifting beat patterns – an endlessly warping vortex of guttural, narcotic sounds. The titular number, a wormhole techno ordeal, builds steadily, layer upon layer. A crystalline dancefloor pleaser, it subverts classic four-to-the-floor with a delayed kick drum that punctuates every 8th beat. Like black oil diffusing in water, the bass creeps in menacingly to 'The Disappearer', in hard and fast contrast with the sharp fluctuations of the amen break. Slamming in mercilessly, 'Channeling Bryn Jones' opens up the B-side, its fluttering rhythms joining together with an infectious klaxon melody before the IDM stylings of 'Brain Massage' closes out. Purest State Confusion was recorded at various locations in Leipzig and Berlin. Final touches and mixing assistance were performed by Mike Bierbach at the Wsnwg studios. The pioneering techno producer inflects the record with his staunch taste for aerobic club rhythmics, teasing out the whirling tempos and pointillistic harmonics.

Emerging DJ and producer Yemi brings the soulful groovers to the Time Is Now white label series.

Having already received support from the likes of UKG mainstays Sammy Virji, Conducta and Smokey Bubblin' B during his relatively youthful career, Yemi is certainly an artist to watch. For justification, look no further than the vibrant, uplifting 6-track EP which combines luscious vocals and blissful piano chords to create a sound which is at once nostalgic and fiercely forward-facing.

Its two opening tracks get things off to a buoyant start, with a bouncing 4x4 rhythm and the syrup-smooth vocals of emerging artist and long-time friend, Bria Keely. Pair these with rattling bongos on "Never Let You Go" and the gleeful trumpets of "Smooth Talkin" and you have two tracks which make it impossible to keep still.

"My Heart" welcomes a change in mood with a loose two-step swing and moody vocals: a track made for the feels. But before you get too self-indulgent, the deep bass grooves of "Soul Food" bring the energy right back and "Tension"'s euphoric piano chords leave things on an ecstatic high.

Audio Soul Project is back with their latest vinyl-only EP, Simurgh. With a title inspired by the mythical Persian bird, these four tracks fuse elements of house, R&B, dub, and drum & bass to create an ecstatic and hypnotic experience. The EP kicks off with "Deliver Me," a dreamy house track with warm filtered chords and bouncing synth bass. R&B female vocal ad libs pepper the groove and the refrain "Deliver Me" adds a sense of yearning. The percussion, including morphing 4x4 and breakbeat drums, piano and synth stabs, nod to the cerebral Detroit and Chicago house compositions of the mid 90s. "Azizam Dub" takes a more stripped-down approach with a subsonic bass line bump and Juno 106 stabs. Frantic percussion and deftly cut vocal samples accent the ebbs and flows of the arrangement, making for a dynamic and engaging dance. The B-side of the record starts with "Internal Vybrations," a bass-heavy drum & bass track that winds and jumps with multiple layers of deep, fluttering bass and ambient pads and strings. Percussion layers like hi-hats, shakers, and maracas lift and relax the rhythm in parallel to the rest of the composition, making for a hypnotic and trance-inducing vibe. The B2 track on the EP, "Celebration Dub," is a bass-heavy swinging house track with ecstatic diva "Whooo" samples that punctuate the ups and downs of the groove's energy. Classic reggae and dub-influenced vocal samples and heavy tape delay on certain key instruments add to the joyful and uplifting vibe of the track. The keyboard and string section can transport a dancer to other realms of consciousness if they let themselves go to the groove. Simurgh is a masterful fusion of various genres that showcases Audio Soul Project's production prowess and ability to create an entrancing sonic journey. Banoffee Pies Records 15th Original Series release comes from Cassius Select. Canadian born producer Lavurn Lee, now residing in his home city of Hong Kong, drops his latest solo EP "Heavyweight". His unique style and selective output has drawn our attention for some time. This release does exactly what it says on the tin. With previous appearances on the likes of Matthew Herbert's Accidental JNR., Hypercolour and more, he has maintained a primary focus on rhythmic structures, alienated textures and eerie vocalisations that flaunt a strong influence and appreciation for UK techno, Hip Hop, Garage, and all things Broken Beat. The release kicks off with "Born To Defence", a mood setter scattered with punchy drum rolls and wild toms that set the tone for a harmonic palette across the 4 tracks. The A2 "Honda Civic" displays a tougher edge using a hybrid of sound. Pulsing late night business - Hatchback style. "Sicko Groove" gets the B side off the ground with a chest rattling, Grime inspired club track, sliding further up the weight divisions before things close off with "Guia Circuit", a more techy low end tool with notable energy shifts.
