The 2014 debut solo collection by French wind-walker Baptiste Martin aka Les Halles remains a masterpiece of soft light and subdued yearning, woven from grainy panpipe samples, tape hiss, and spectral delay. Recorded late at night in a tiny room in Montpellier, Invisible Cities quivers like a candle by the sea, its fragile illumination flickering against an expanse of sky, silence, and sorrow. The pieces feel both ancient and immediate, glimpsing currents behind the veil, at the threshold of presence and absence. The track titles evoke similarly transient states of echo, memory, and negative mirrors. This is music of solitude and devotion, of empty streets and unremembered dreams, fleetingly captured via the eternal alchemy of FX pedals and a 4-track. (Britt Brown)

During the later stages of 2020, Damien Duque (City of Dawn) and M Cody McPhail (atop) decided to begin writing a collaborative album together. A remarkable one-off tribute to the drummer behind the most sampled break of all time, Clyde Stubblefield, this 7” goes straight for the glitchy jugular, cutting up Stubblefield’s breaks from his time with James Brown into a blizzard of rhythmically complex, tightly programmed IDM, underpinned by deep, dark sub-bass. Stubblefield passed away in 2017, but his legacy lives on through numerous tracks that sampled his work across genres like hip hop, jungle, and, well, more or less every other genre. Most were uncredited and he wasn’t paid for his contributions.

In a world where harder, faster and more obnoxious is the order of the day Frederic Robinson deals in complex and nuanced music that displays a maturity of thought far beyond the young German’s years. Disciplined and focused, he stretches genres until the restrictions of tempo lose their meaning and the listener is free to simply experience music rather than categorise it. His intensely intricate sound design, instrumentation and arrangement places him closer to contemporary classical composers such as Steve Reich, Terry Riley or Philip Glass than the more typically accepted gurus of dance music. The music itself is beautiful, both subtle and satisfying. Harmonies rush and swoop, collapsing in on each other amid fractured percussion and sparkling melody, simultaneously muscular and fragile. Motifs appear, become warped then reappear in different forms, helping the music to talk about itself while it shifts through distinct movements of light and shade. It is this fearsome and unique skill in execution which has led Frederic Robinson to the ears of tastemakers across the spectrum, from Gilles Peterson to London Elektricity, and seen a flurry of releases on Hospital Records, Brownswood, Bmtm and Med School along with remix work for some of his most promising young contemporaries.

As a DJ he has performed all over the world, including Transmediale Festival (Berlin), Today's Art (Den Haag) and Boomtown Fair, as well as two live sessions at Radio 1's legendary Maida Vale Studios. "If it’s written in the stars", says a Bulgarian proverb. In a time shaped by uncertainty and disintegrating securities, trusting in the stars doesn’t seem too far fetched. "Last year, every conversation I had ended with this sentence ", Dena explains, "before I had the album, I already had the title. It’s about believing and trusting in universal connections, trusting that everything will fall into place, eventually."

And all has indeed fallen into place: Four years after her début Flash, If It’s Written marks a new chapter in Dena’s musical and personal development. The product of major transformations in her life and work, If It’s Written is the work of a grown-up woman who has taken matters into her own hands. The record is a celebration of individuality and independence, for the first time Dena has taken over producing the majority of the tracks herself. "For me, this is major progress", she says, "from writing the first song for this album to this point, it’s been such a journey." It took two different versions and four mixes, but now that circle came to a closing and If It’s Written is ready to be released unto the world.

Inviting friends to collaborate on her very own terms, Dena created her own universe: features include the laid back So Wrong, a duet with Canadian indie-crooner par excellence Sean Nicholas Savage, or the serene Things That Mean A Lot, recorded with Filipino cool cats Eyedress & Rhxanders, beautifully describing the emptiness just before a relationship falls apart. Other guests include Berlin-based Argentinian singer Pictorial Candi on the outro If It’s Written or longtime collaborator and friend Erlend Øye on the minimal and bone-dry Speculations.

Dialogue was conceived as a series of musical letters written back and forth between Luke Slater, Anthony Child (aka Surgeon), Kmru, Lady Starlight, Speedy J and harpist Tom Moth (of Florence + the Machine) at the height of the pandemic between 2020 and early 2021. Using the common language of rhythmic ambient electronics, each Dialogue features three actors in a sonic conversation of longform improvisation between 15 and 25 minutes in length, with Luke Slater the common denominator. The results are a brooding, psychedelic exchange of melody, texture, bass, oscillation, key changes and volume swells, which organically merge into complete compositions. It’s music that both reflects and transcends the artists' common reality of isolation – a meditative, consciousness-expanding conversion of musical ideas born from necessity. Cosmic but not escapist. And very much of its time.

Experimental multi-instrumentalist Dave Cudlip releases his debut full- length album as Radiolarians via brand new experimental label Klang Tone Records.

Having already garnered plaudits from one of the most authoritative voices in UK electronic music, Electronic Sound magazine, the 10-track album presents a stunning and unique combination of ethereal ambient soundscapes, undulating rhythms and jarring sound collages; the result of what Cudlip describes as a “quick and spontaneous” recording process using a limited setup of analogue synthesisers and drum machines.

The release marks an exciting new chapter for Klang Tone, which is already considered a musical institution in the vibrant town of Stroud, Gloucestershire. The record shop, founded by avant-grade sound artist and obsessive crate-digger Sean Roe has earned a reputation as one of the South West’s nuclei for contemporary jazz, electronic and experimental music.

After the instantly sold-out limited edition lathe-cut 7” of the Radiolarians single ‘Obsidian 2’, Klang Tone is now proud to launch its label arm proper with Radiolarians as its first limited run vinyl release.'

Dave Cudlip was born in North Devon. After moving to Stroud as a child and playing in bands as a teenager, he left the West Country to study archaeology at Durham University, with his subsequent work as an archaeologist taking Cudlip all over Britain. After returning to Stroud, Cudlip has continued to make music, drawing on his love for the work of artists such as Harmonia and Autechre. He created Radiolarians in response to what he calls the “tyranny of choice” when it comes to electronic instruments, streamlining his creative process and consciously limiting his options to produce a veritable distillation of extraordinary ideas.

Darker Than Wax's first release of 2021 brings you back to the world of UK dance music with Dampé -- the solo project of Joe Munday, a musician, producer and DJ from South London. Joe's foundation in dance music stems from becoming a regular on the floor at influential parties like Fwd>> and You're A Melody. Dampé brings together these London sounds with worldwide influences and nuanced, ethereal production to create something entirely his own. With a string of releases on Berlin's Dirt Crew Records, and a monthly show on the venerable Rinse FM, Dampé has carved out a space for his sonic brand of introspective, deep UK dance music. Spurred by a chance meeting with the Darker Than Wax crew in London in 2018, an instant relationship between artist and label flourished through our shared sonic ethos. After numerous setbacks from the chaos of 2020, the label finally shares Dampé's label debut with the world: Oil. A polished, wide-ranging work in its own right, Oil runs the gamut from moments of lush, meditative sound design, to banging mutant-Bruk and flailing percussive dancefloor cuts. Kicking off with restless ambient excursion "Jawahar Park", into the deep, evolving dancefloor affair with title track "Oil", and rounding out with the shimmering slo-mo house of "Flora Waves", the first side of the record showcases Dampé's sonic range and his unique approach to forging new sounds. Terence Fixmer’s path through the changing techno landscape of the past 20 years has been anything but direct. Indeed, the French born producer, musician and Planete Rouge label founder has long been influenced by the periphery of continental European dance music subgenres from electronic body music, new beat and acid, before combining them into his own pioneering hybrid of futuristic, EBM-inflected techno with classic releases such as 2001’s Muscle Machine or the collaborative Between The Devil LP with Nitzer Ebb’s Douglas McCarthy as Fixmer/McCarthy. While the sound in recent years has been rediscovered and recast in diverse contexts by a new generation of producers, Through The Cortex sees Fixmer gravitating toward a different kind of industrial-tinged electronics, led as much (or more) by analogue sequencers, melodies and ultra-saturated sounds of synthesizers than drums and percussion. Across eight tracks at a compact but varied 40 minutes, the LP touches on an aesthetic hinted at in recent Ostgut Ton releases (2016’s Beneath The Skin EP and 2017’s Force EP), revealing a sonic narrative through noisy, screaming synth/vocal riffs with a jagged, guitar- like post-punk sensibility. Through The Cortex is techno with a voice – or rather multiple voices – guiding listeners through hypnotic, space- and social-themed terrain as a kind of dark soundtrack to darker days. The result ranges from the slow John Carpenter-inspired Escape From Precinct 13 funk of “Expedition” and the patient yet muscular stomp of “Fury” to the mesmerizing Suicide-like pop of single “Accelerate”, where Fixmer, using his voice as an instrument, chants the track’s ambiguous title in an invocation of systemic change/collapse. Elsewhere, the story is told with more abstract and wailing vocals like on “Shout in A Black Hole”, or in the warm, entrancing chords floating across the stereo image in ostensibly changing time-signatures on “A Halo Somewhere” – the LP’s uncharacteristically kosmische musik come-down. The track, and Through The Cortex as a whole, reflect what can be described as Fixmer’s idiosyncratic take on both techno subgenres as well as the larger pool of electronic music in general. This broad approach translates into a sound that is not only difficult to pin down, but also one that lends itself to multiple listens.

Literally terabytes of bodyspam gush from my cleavered gut contorting and hurling a harsh beige pumping swirl of bile and chunks that blow into a gash of nicely printed paper bagging under my chin like a bib FLY Emirates a thin chord of acid dribble stringing from my lip. It’s a cold tight cold feeling with a clingy close bubble of hugging close silvery shiver effect that sticks around my ribs, up the spine etc etc and you can’t expect me to sit around on the runway like some lemon I’ve got disposable income, looking down I find a freshly lost brown leather wallet and rifle through it, a stack of nearly complete loyalty cards Pret, Nero, Itsu and many more as well as a Monzo card, i press the service buzzer and order a Heineken.

Oh, lovely appearance of death, No sight upon earth is so fair; Not all the gay pageants that breathe, Can with a dead body compare.– Charles Wesley, A Funeral Hymn for a Believer, 1780. So begins New Atlantis, the fourth full-length album by longtime Berghain resident Efdemin aka Phillip Sollmann. The words, sung by 60s California art icon William T. Wiley and embedded in glowing drone swells, set an otherworldly tone for Sollmann’s first solo release on Ostgut Ton. Over eight tracks, New Atlantis oscillates between fast, kaleidoscopic techno, multilayered drones and acoustic instrumentation, fusing for the first time Sollmann’s deep dancefloor productions as Efdemin with his sound art and experimental music projects. The latter include 2017’s Harry Partch- inspired Monophonie performance and 2018’s Panama / Suez EP with Oren Ambarchi and Konrad Sprenger. Long drawn to utopian musical traditions, Sollmann took inspiration for New Atlantis from Francis Bacon’s unfinished 17th century novel of the same name, which describes a fictional island devoted to social progress through the synthesis of art, science, technology and fashion. In the story, Bacon imagines futuristic ‘sound houses’, which contain musical instruments capable of recreating the entirety of the sounds of the universe; a 400-year-old prophesy of today’s digital sonic reality. Through Sollmann’s lens, Bacon’s vision ebbs and flows over 50 minutes in varying speeds and colors, emerging as a tapestry of different utopian musical traditions – through billowing synth lines, early Detroit techno, resonant wooden percussion, trance, droning organs, dulcimer, electric guitars, hurdy-gurdy, just intonation, poetry, hymns and murmuring voices. Sometimes they merge into epic, rhythmic journeys like the 14-minute long title track; other times they appear as a briefly open sound portal (“Temple”), or in the forlorn human voice on “Oh, Lovely Appearance Of Death”, calling to be freed from jail of the human body and pass into the afterlife. Like previous Efdemin albums on Dial, New Atlantis veers off the techno path to explore other musical territory. Here however, Sollmann occasionally abandons the club entirely, returning only to push its boundaries with other instruments, mythologies and psychedelic story telling.

Inquiring after the ephemeral experiences of sound phenomena, Shelter Press presents Translucents , its first collaboration with American artist and composer Byron Westbrook. Comprising a single, 41 minute work divided into a series of interconnected vignettes that explore sonority’s relationship to time and memory, Translucents represents arguably the most definitive statement to date by one of the most singular voices working in the contemporary landscape of electroacoustic music. First emerging within New York’s rigorous context of experimental music over the course of the last decade and a half and now based in Los Angeles, Byron Westbrook has woven progressively intricate tapestries of sonority that bridge the worlds of sound art, installation, avant-garde electronic music, and synthesis. Working thoughtfully at an almost glacial pace - allowing the meaning and relationships within his sonic material to evolve and emerge over long durations before a piece reaches its final form - Westbrook’s practice is centred in the creation of hyper-specific sound environments that pursue a questioning or deconstruction of presumed or imposed understanding, subsequently appearing across a series of highly acclaimed full-lengths on imprints like Root Strata, Hands In The Dark, Umor Rex, and Ash International, as well as being staged at the Walker Art Center, ICA London, Moca Los Angeles, MoMA PS1, MaerzMusik, Rewire and Akousma Festivals among numerous other venues. Translucents , Westbrook’s first release with Shelter Press, was begun in 2016 at Elektronmusikstudion (ems) in Stockholm, Sweden, on Buchla 200 and Serge modular synthesiser systems. Those initial recordings, in conjunction with a broad palette of field recordings, were then edited and composed into the resulting 41 minute piece over the course of the following seven years before being completed in 2023 at Black Hole immersive audio studio in Los Angeles. Similar to Thomas Mann’s 1924 novel, The Magic Mountain , Translucents is rooted in the experiential phenomena of time; more specifically the cohabitation of multiple temporalities within a single piece. Partially drawing upon an encounter with the works of the artist Blinky Palermo, during which Westbrook observed the retinal ghost of one painting transpose itself over another - imposing itself outside of its own time and presumed perimeters of experience - like his environmental and context-based installation work, Translucents stages sound as a sculptural form, setting up theatrical situations, played out as a series of interconnected vignettes that are designed to provoke unique and wholly subjective experiences through the act of listening. Incorporating complex harmonic relationships, durational tones, a heady cast of rhythmical elements, and the bristling textures of electronics and unprocessed environmental recording drawn from the natural and industrial world, Translucents is a gesture of structural virtuosity; knots of tense, sonic density unfurled before being released as trace phenomena into spacious, pastoral plains of near silence, microscopic detail, and floating ambiences. As each counterpoint of contrast indicates its own experience and representation of time - provoking an imagism that borders on synesthesia - Westbrook threads a striking balance between psychoacoustic phenomena and a reorientation of relational sound: what is perceived physically vs observationally. Conceptually rich and deeply engaging on creative terms, while remarkable beautiful and captivating, Byron Westbrook’s Translucents is a singular statement of contemporary electroacoustic practice, issued by Shelter press on CD, accompanied by a 16 pages booklet comprising a suite of photographs and an essay by the composer

After his debut EP, Don Kashew delivers his first album on Subject To Restrictions Discs, a conceptual work in which he discovers “Reibung” as a core concept of musical expression. A loudspeaker causes the molecules of the air to vibrate. Friction occurs and the sound spreads out in the room. Physically, friction is at the beginning of every sound. At the same time, the metaphor of friction describes the core of musical creation. As such, creation is always defined by its reference as well as its demarcation from existing artistic and social positions. In a sense, music is always rubbing against itself, its past and its environment, constantly being honed into new forms.

With “Reibung”, Don Kashew explores friction as a basic principle of musical expression. Inspired by the avant-rock and experimental music scene of the 80s around the Zurich record label “RecRec Music”, techniques are used whose core is the friction of sounds: dissonances, phasing or the preparation of instruments. These techniques are complemented by sampling and recombination of musical forms, existing music and cultural audio products. The idea of “Reibung” is thus at the heart of the production of musical expression.

Danish electronic artist Rumpistol, aka Jens B. Christiansen, releases his fourth and most ambitious album yet – Floating – a collaboration with LA based vocalist Red Baron that further explores the post dub-step vocal territories opened up on last year’s Talk To You EP. With tighter song structures, intimate lyrics and the Baron’s ecstatic vocal projections, the two create a parallel world in which the domestic breakdowns of wintry Copenhagen are filtered through surreal sun-bleached Californian dreams, resulting in a robotic and hypnagogic hybrid of soul.
The sound, while still recognizably “Rumpistol” in its organically unstable clicks and gurgles, marks an evolution in Christiansen’s thinking, shedding light on the interior landscapes of existential crisis and bliss that he’s been essaying over the last ten years.

The introduction of Red Baron does a great deal to carry this forward. Many of the tracks were written in partnership with the elusive vocalist on an almost subconscious level, through a process where different phrases were recorded until the atmosphere was properly expressed. It’s through the Baron’s heavily processed voice, hovering between male and female timbres, that the ghost of American pop culture finds itself here too. In this way Grace Jones stands tall in a frozen stream on I’m Not Listening, Lionel Richie gets stuck in traffic on a bad trip in Colors Breaking while Kanye pushes his auto-tuned bicycle through the blizzard of Floating. But as the arctic arpeggiated synths let you know, the album is more about the future than any past, a future where Rumpistol and Red Baron dare to take current genres from the post dub-step and wonky scenes and defy them with the human voice for a dystopic soul music of their own.

A collection of DIY phonographic home recordings, transferred from blank and repurposed brown and black wax cylinders, dating back to between the late 1800s and early 1900s.

They brought professional entertainers into our homes and let us command their performances at will. They also gave us the power to record. Today I woke up with a vague memory of yesterday. It's not the first time that I've encountered clouded memories. From where I lay I can see there are fresh cuts on my arms and feet and legs next to scarred over wounds. I turn my head and see that there are a few drops of blood dried on the white bathroom tile next to caked on red stains turned brown. I've reached the point where I stopped asking "why"? In fairness, I stopped asking "what?", too. I stand out of bed into a relatively organized room. There's no headache, no hangover, no shaking, no blurred vision. There's no nausea, no instability. One foot smoothly walks in front of the other. I trace my fingers along the white walls as I cross the threshold into the bright kitchen. Through the windows I see the city, its skyscrapers glowing in the cold winter morning sun. Beyond them I can make out the snowy mountains and the cold black ocean. As I dress in silence, my mind is empty and clear. My day is not purposeless, I'm not directionless. I have a calling and it's guiding hand leads me outside. Hotly tipped by everyone from Annie Mac, Bonobo and Gorillaz to Billboard, NME, Crack, Mixmag and DJ Mag, Tsha is rapidly emerging as one of the most exciting talents coming out of the UK. Forthcoming EP “OnlyL'' due for release on 27th August showcases a confident creative who is constantly developing and refining her own distinct feel and sound.

The release arrives off the back of a stellar run for the young artist including the launch of her new bi-monthly ‘Jackfruit Radio’ show on Apple Music—which debuted with a guest spot from femme culture founder Elkka—releasing her first BBC Essential Mix and a Minimix for Annie Mac’s R1 show, and being named BBC Radio 1’s “Future Artist” for January 2021 and “Star of 2020” by BBC Introducing. Her most recent EP, 2020’s “Flowers”, made multiple End-Of-Year listings, and was met with widespread praise from the likes of Billboard, NME—who described the EP as "emotion-filled electronic anthems from a star in the making”—NPR, Resident Advisor, Mixmag, Nylon, DJ Mag, Dancing Astronaut and many more. She has also been tipped for greatness by essentially the whole of BBC R1 specialist DJ crew including Annie Mac, Jack Saunders, Jaguar, Pete Tong, Danny Howard, Ricky, Melvin & Charlie and Flava D.

On EP title track and lead single ‘OnlyL’, Tsha’s innate gift for producing genre-defying, classy electronic pop is at the fore. An instant earworm, it features vocals from Nimmo aka Sarah Nimmo and Reva Gauntlett, with Tsha juxtaposing the dark lyrics against the track’s upbeat instrumental.

‘Power’ plays to another of Tsha’s loves: club music. With her DJ career flourishing, the global pandemic shut down the nighttime industries and all access to dancefloors and the shared experience and exhilaration of clubbing. ‘Power’ encapsulates all of that pent up energy and love and is aimed squarely at the dancefloor–an absolutely storming four-to-the-floor groove.

‘I Know’ shows off yet another facet of Tsha’s extraordinary production chops. A perfect marriage of live musicianship and electronics, it’s a beautifully textured and melancholy work built around a gorgeous hang drum motif.

Gearing up for a busy summer schedule at UK festivals including Access, Bigfoot, Standon Calling, Gala, Boardmasters, Lost Village, ION, Hideout, Inner State and Detonate, Tsha will also be appearing at Field Day in August 2021, sharing the bill with the likes of Bicep, Floating Points, Jayda G and Mount Kimbie.

“Ghost Producer” aka Badawi (aka Raz Mesinai aka Bilal ibn Yakub al-Badawi) is a prolific producer and artist whom has been on the forefront of underground experimental jazz and electronic music scenes around the world for over thirty years, with a massive catalog of genre defying albums on such legendary labels as Roir, Asphodel and Tzadik under various monikers dating back to the late 1980’s. Ghost Producer released his first albums starting in the late 80’s under the monikers “Psy Co.” and “Ruff Riddim Productions”, selling his cassette tapes in NYC, he produced, on average, at least one album per week since 1988 till present day. One of the twenty or so monikers was “Badawi”, later being signed to Roir Records and releasing the seminal experimental dub, punk albums “Bedouin Sound Clash” and later “The Heretic of Ether” on Asphodel. Spending time as a child between Occupied Jerusalem, the West Bank (Balata) and New York City (Rock Steady Park) during the height of the B-Boy era in the 70s and 80s informed Ghost Producer’s singular sound of heavy driving Sufi rhythms, sonic experiments, percussion, piano playing and sound design which has connected him to a wide variety of artists ranging from Maryanne Amacher to John Zorn, to added elements of darkness to music by such artists as Hanz Zimmer (Black Hawk Down) and rappers Danny Brown (Pneumonia) and Skepta and Double D (Don) among many others. At age 14, Ghost Producer was discovered by visionary jazz and rock musician, Juma Sultan (Jimi Hendrix) whom later trusted Ghost Producer with producing the archive of over 2000 hours from recordings from “Studio We” and the Free Jazz Loft Movement in NYC in the 60s and 70s. As a composer, he has worked with Kronos Quartet and has had premiers at Carnegie Hall (Cross Fader, The Echo of Decay) and Lincoln Center (String Quartet For Four Turntables). In addition, Ghost Producer has released several albums on John Zorn’s Tzadik label, where he explored producing to the books of Franz Kafka (Before The Law, Resurrections for Goat Skin, Cyborg Acoustics) As a composer for film, he coined the term “score design” to describe his work in conceiving and producing scores for films with particularly demanding needs, working on such films as A Late Quartet (director Yaron Zilberman composer: Angelo Badalamenti), The Fountain, Black Swan and The Wrestler (Darren Aronofsky/Clint Mansel), Black Hawk Down (Ridley Scott/Hans Zimmer) and many more. In 2014, he was awarded as a fellow in the Sundance Composers Lab. In 2015, Ghost Producer formed the “Underground Producers Alliance”, a unique program for developing producers, performers and composers, with co-founders Scotty Hard (Wu Tang Clan, Medeski Martin and Wood, De La Soul), HPrizm aka High Priest (Anti Pop Consortium), Honeychild Coleman (the 1865, The Slits) and Prince Paul (Jungle Brothers, De La Soul), where Ghost Producer produces entire albums with student participation in his master course on production “The Ghost Program”. This album, The Book of Jinn, is one of many productions done within the course, featuring players/mentors Juma Sultan (percussion), Chandenie (voice) and Shahzad Ismaily (electric bass), with additional student participation from Adam Culbert and Jonah Sollins (aka Goodnight 1500) on synths and percussion as well, then all remixed and rearranged by Badawi into what you hear here, The Book of Jinn.
