Back in the early 1990s house music was having perhaps its most fertile and creative period. The original house from Chicago had blown up back in the ‘80s and left nothing short of a cultural revolution in its wake, with regional variants springing up all over the US, the UK and Europe.
London in particular was a global hub for house music, with a whole slew of clubs and a long established underground scene that had taken house to its heart. A key mover-and- shaker was a young Jeremy Newall, who worked successively at a whole bunch of record stores including Catch-A-Groove, where the likes of Tony Humphries would come and hang out when in town (Humphries used to record his shows at a flat above the shop with a wide-eyed Jeremy soaking in the vibes), and latterly Release The Groove, where he could be found well into the twenty-first century. A close association with Paul ‘Trouble’ Anderson saw him repping for the big fella when Trouble was unable to do his Kiss FM radio show, and as the resident alongside him at Trouble’s much loved Loft Sessions in Camden. He also played on many pirates, at all the best parties in London, Europe and beyond. Jeremy’s position as the go-to guy behind the capital’s hippest record store counters saw many visiting US jocks passing him records that barely saw the light of day in a scene where superb new tunes were coming thick and fast. Therein lie the roots of this compilation … a collection of overlooked, unreleased, and just hard-to-find gems to put alongside some of the better-known and overplayed classics of the era.

Straight out of Los Angeles, powerviolence band Zulu are here to share their life experiences and make a comfortable environment for everyone they come in contact with. The latest signing to Flatspot Records, the label will be releasing, for the first time on vinyl, the band’s debut EP Our Day Will Come (2019) and its follow-up My People...Hold On (2020) this summer. Formed by vocalist Anaiah Lei (also of hardcore band Dare) in 2019, Zulu is rounded out by Dez Yusuf (guitar), Braxton Marcellous (guitar), Satchel Brown (bass), and Christine Cadette (drums). Citing influences from Jill Scott to Weekend Nachos, the band’s style is fiercely original, laced with heavy breakdowns intertwined with samples of pivotal moments in black culture. The band has already seen praise from Stereogum, No Echo, and New Noise Magazine, and have a tour on the way with fellow California innovators Scowl this summer. Zulu carries a strong message, but it’s also about having fun, as Anaiah puts it - “Zulu isn’t a political band at all. I started Zulu because I wanted to be in an all black band and talk about what we go through and been going through. But also celebrating our lives at the same time.”

Im Herbst 2018 komponierte Lindstrom ein Auftragswerk für eine Premiere im norwegischen Kunstzentrum Henie Onstad Kunstsenter. Skizzen der drei ausverkauften Aufführungen wurden zur Grundlage für die vier Tracks von ,On A Clear Day I Can See You Forever" (ein Titel, der sich an das Musical ,On A Clear Day You Can See Forever" mit Barbra Streisand anlehnt). Alle Songs basieren auf langen, einteiligen Aufnahmen. ,I felt totally unrestrained making this album", sagt Lindstrom. ,I've listened to Robert Wyatt's solo albums and his ,Matching Mole's" debut album a lot lately. It so effortless, fearless and free. And not insisting. I was very inspired by this." Dies ist auch das erste Mal, dass Lindstrom ein Album komplett mit Hardware statt mit Computer-Plugins veröffentlicht. Während seiner Performance im Henie Onstad Kunstsenter setzte er über 30 Synthesizer und Drumcomputer ein. Concocted in a share house in the South of Brisbane in the mid-80s, a small collective of well-acquainted musicians including Jon Anderson, Rainer Guth, Gary McFeat & Rod Owen gathered to compose film soundtracks, music for pictures, therefore ‘Picture Music’. To this end, a ‘spec’ tape of Picture Music recordings would be produced to give to potential clients and or sold to local stores. A distinct album comprising a collection of ambient, minimal-jazz and experimental music. If there is a red thread running through the Picture Music album, it is its "late night" ambience. The wrath of the sub-tropical summer heat of Brisbane is not kind on electronic equipment, which would crash regularly by day. So, all recording was done in the relative cool of the late evening, in a room only dimly lit by lamp and candle. The Picture Music collective would make music and party all through the night, departing around sunrise. They would sleep through the heat of the day, only to return in the evening for more of the same. This 2021 reissue of their self-titled 1987 cassette, was taken from the original master tapes and remains an evocative representation of the music that resulted from the late-night, dimly-lit, atmospheric-enabled environment, that sparked the creativity of a group of like-minded friends in a tiny corner of Brisbane. Dedicated to the memory Rainer Guth.

White Vinyl - 1970's Cult BBC TV Original Soundtrack - First Ever Release -
Written by Paddy Kingsland and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop The
critically acclaimed BBC TV series, The Changes, was first broadcast by the
BBC in in 1975, accompanied by music from electronic pioneer Paddy
Kingsland, who wrote and recorded the score while working at the BBC
Radiophonic Workshop. The 10 part series, adapted from Peter Dickinson's
book trilogy, was perfectly suited to Kingsland's seminal electronic style,
following a teenager living in a Britain where machinery and technology emit
a terrible, all-enveloping noise, causing the population to destroy them.
Kingsland used an early synthesiser, the EMS Synthi 100 (which was
apparently so large, they had to remove the doors of the studio to get it
through), overlaid with live instruments including sitar, percussion, tabla, flute
and horns to create a soundtrack which is indicative of exactly how the BBC
Radiophonic Workshop's early output influenced and informed the popular
electronic music of the Eighties and beyond. Kingsland went on to write the
music for (amongst others) The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Radio and
TV series), Doctor Who and Around the World in 80 Days, as well as
composing for the KPM music library, who issued eight albums of his work.
An LP of his Radiophonic Workshop output, "The Fourth Dimension" , was
released by BBC Records in 1973.

Live at the Witch Trials was the debut studio album by The Fall. It was released in March 1979, through record label Step-Forward. Despite it's title, it is not a live album. The album was recorded at Camden Sound Suite on 15 December 1978 and mixed by producer Bob Sargeant the next day. The group had been booked into the studio for a week but Mark E. Smith had fallen ill, leading to the cancellation of the first three days. Some songs dated from earlier incarnations of the group with both Tony Friel and Una Baines featuring on the writing credits.

Kalita are excited to announce the first ever re-release of "Adzagli (Jungle Funk)" and "A Song For You (Ayawa)", two phenomenal pieces of West African disco from Amsterdam"s Kofi Ayivor. Selected from his sought-after Nigerian 1981 self-titled debut album "Kofi", at last these two recordings see the light of day once more via a loud-cut remastered 12" single. In addition, Kalita enlists fellow Amsterdam resident, DJ and producer Mendel to create his own remix of each recording, using the original multitrack session tapes to rework both for the modern-day dancefloor.

Trailer Bride's 1996 self-titled record is a long-lost relic of the blooming Chapel Hill, North Carolina music scene of the '90s. Superchunk, Polvo, Archers of Loaf and other indie rock darlings were leading the town's indie rock movement while Southern Culture on the Skids were pushing the alt-country genre forward. Then comes Trailer Bride who combined both of those worlds with a gothic, lo-fi sound that centers around Melissa Swingle's atmospheric vocals and cryptic lyrics. Swingle started Trailer Bride following the demise of her band Pussy Teeth and would later go on to form the indie rock duo The Moaners with Laura King (Bat Fangs, Speed Stick), but the dark, southern sound that defines Trailer Bride's debut record provides a mystifying listening experience a quarter-century later. No Depression said it best in their 1997 review: "They're impossible to describe, but whatever you wanna call it, they sound really good." The album is available for the first time ever on vinyl for Record Store Day Black Friday 2022. This 25th anniversary edition is pressed on cloudy orange vinyl and remastered for vinyl. Limited to 1,500 copies worldwide.
