THEODOR is a psychedelic sweet soul band formed by members with diverse musical backgrounds.
Whilst on a road trip to Italy Rob and Lui were listening to tapes of contemporary soul music. The idea was born to record an album channeling a moody and relaxed soundscape. „Right after our trip we called up our good friends Max and Greg, who were immediately on board. We wrote and recorded deep in the pandemic. Those weekend sessions captured this peaceful solitude“ The outcome was their self-titled debut album which will be released in February 2023 on the french label Broc Recordz. The rich sonic texture and unconventional arrangements of their very first single SHEPARD’S LULLABY gives a hint on what is to be expected on their forthcoming LP. THEODOR created a perfect soundtrack for a hot and humid summer day having a magic dash in your twelve o’clock tea. Playful melodic bass lines and the soulful acoustic drums build the playground for the warm and dreamy keys such as farfisa organs, fender rhodes and 80's synths. The lush instrumentals are spiced by the very different yet complementary voices of Max and Lui.

'Man in the Mouth of a Cave' - I have painted St. Cuthbert's Cave, Northumberland on many occasions and decided that it was imperative that I write a great jazz /beat theme all about it. (Important info: After Viking raids monks from Lindisfarne wandered the north-east carrying the body of St. Cuthbert. Legend has it that they took refuge in 'St. Cuthbert's Cave.') I wrote the song with my friend Jamie Taylor in mind to have his way with it, which he does to thunderous applause - I should imagine. '107 Sleepless' is a tune I wrote in the early 1980s when me and Mick Hampshire would stay up the entire weekend writing songs for our group The Milkshakes. (We lived at 107 Rochester Street, Chatham.) About 3am Sunday morning we would be flagging and sitting there senseless. I would play this jazz riff over and over for some unknown reason. Saigon Supersound Continues… to present more interesting tunes of a musical era that has long been obscured. With the well-received Volume 1, we are very delighted to dig deeper and share with you the beautiful music of a short but significant period in Vietnam‘s history.
Much like the country itself, the music of Vietnam has endured many twists. As the result of the Geneva Accords in 1954, Vietnam was divided into two. From the North, the Nationalist forces fought to reunite Vietnam as a Communist State, while the American troops backed the government of the South. This caused a mass migration of Northerners to the South, which includes many Tân Nhạc (Modern Music) singers and songwriters. Often characterized by its emotive, poetic and prolific personality, Tân Nhạc continued to freely develop in the South and progressively vacating from the influences of its main inspiration, French music. In the North, the Resistance music, or the so-called Nhạc Đỏ (Red Music), which promoted socialism, patriotism and anti-capitalism was the only genre allowed on national radio. Tân Nhạc was something new to the South Vietnamese repertoire. Between 1954–1960, the theme of hometown (quê hương) was a main inspiration for many songwriters such as Hoàng Thi Thơ, Lam Phương and Nguyễn Hữu Thiết. The 9th title of the compilation, “Thôn Trăng Mở Hội Trăng Tròn” showcases a variety of images that were often described in this genre: the harvest moon, playful children, old mother…
Every recording made in this era is then an organic combination of human experiences, communications and uniqueness. In 1965, the first American troop landed in Vietnam, bringing with them the musical influences of the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley… The Vietnamese people quickly integrated it into the repertoire with hope to further diversify the music of Vietnam. Constantly changing and learning from different cultures, the modern music of Vietnam cuts a window into the soul of a Vietnamese person and the country’s history as a whole. With that, we hope that Saigon Supersound Volume 2 would take you on a trip back to the unique atmosphere of Saigon through the many different palettes of music that this beautiful place offers.

Legendary international DJ, Keb Darge, fell under the spell of this music when his Japanese girlfriend forced him to go down to a ‘Rockabilly’ night back in 1989. As soon as the DJ dropped the needle on Johnny Burnette’s ‘Rockabilly Boogie’ Keb was mesmerized. He was soon hunting down the hideously rare top tunes and slipping thousands of pounds into specialist collectors like Boz Boorer’s back pocket, when the legendary guitarist was not recording or touring with Morrissey. Of course, Keb was then taking these records and introducing them to new audiences in his DJ sets worldwide.

Although it has taken an age to persuade him, Keb has now applied his perfectionist compiling skills to pick 14 killers to grace this fantastic collection. "A Go Go" (1966) by Los Larks is released now on vinyl, from the original IRT masters!This is a legendary album, as it was the first record ever by a Chilean pop - rock band.The band took a very special care with their look, so they used the famous "beatle wigs "on their live show and TV appearances.Los Larks were the first exponents of Chilean rock to reach an important repercussion, supported by their aesthetics, close to that of the fab four, and their style, framed in what was then called 'a go go' Pop rock perfectly executed, danceable and that led Los Larks to success despite their short career, just two LPs, and some singles, and to be the main representatives of the visual phenomenon called at that time 'colerico'.This album is essentially covers of the hits of the moment in the 'beat' world, with classics by the Monkees, Dave Clark Five, and of course, their favorites, the Beatles.

Special album for March 8 - Women's Day!!! Third shift of girls going ahead to the power! If the previous volumes were organised by the colour of the skin, in this one we´ve given preference to girl groups over solo singers, but we didn't want to be too strict, so you'll also find some individualists. We start off strong, The Ikettes and The Raelettes no less, the backing singers of Ike & Tina Turner's and Ray Charles' bands. Both vocal groups had a very important specific weight for the soloists they accompanied, as important that nobody could stop them from recording their own albums and singles as well. Behind them a fairly wide and eclectic selection, from doo wop to garage, passing through pop and rock'n'roll. Is any musical genre too much for women? certainly not! A sad note to finish. This is the last volume of this collection, which closes this circle in which we have brought together a total of 39 tracks, very varied in sound but with the common denominator of female voices in all of them. Columbus, in Lowndes County, is the childhood home of Tennessee Williams (just down US Route 45 from White Station, birthplace of Howlin' Wolf). Songs reflecting this singular environment include:"Pink Cadillac" written by Calvin when he was 16 (in reserve for just the right session);Title song "Gallows Wine" rips psycho psychedelic, poetic license intact;"Crazy Legs" is a Gene Vincent class act celebrating our sock hopulation;"Orange Aid" melts downtown no WAV.Yeah, Gallows Wine gets primitive: Lurch pulls a night shift on organ, Grandma Moses on the fife and drum. Calvin busk (melodica garage worm profane). Rockabilly spin cycle, guitar scrape and crush. Hand jive. Despite a scant recorded legacy, the Royal Chessmen were one of the more popular 60s bands of the Mid-Ohio area.

Originally named for their hometown, 25 miles south of Canton, the Dover Chessmen, or simply the Chessmen, were assembled in 1965 by 15 year-old guitarist David Bird along with Dover High classmates Ken Weigand on bass, Keith Whiddon on guitar and Jeff Gintz on drums.

By 1967 Rich Bellanco of rival band the Pendletones had replaced Gintz, and Dave’s older brother Rodney Bird, a junior at Ohio State, was recruited on organ.

As they began to pick up local gigs they added equipment manager Edward Hardesty. They also MOD-ified their moniker to the more regal Royal Chessmen.

Two previously unreleased tracks have been rescued from the vaults by B-W label owner Matt Baker and are presented in this handsome gatefold sleeve.

She's back, the gloves are off and she is coming out swinging. Tami Neilson won't be staying New Zealand's secret for much longer. For the past decade, the Canadian-born, New Zealand-based singer/songwriter has been the queen of her adopted homeland's country and roots music scenes. She has picked up a handful of Best Country Album awards at the New Zealand Music Awards and won the prestigious APRA Silver Scroll for excellence in songwriting. With her new album, Sassafrass!, Neilson takes a giant step forward. On this 11-track knock-out, she places a heavier emphasis on soul music without abandoning her country and rockabilly roots. Neilson conjures up a wonderfully retro style that sounds like it could be a lost gem from the late '50s or early '60s; however, beneath the classic veneer are frank, highly relevant lyrics. Sassafrass, a slang word for a sassy person who isn't afraid to speak her mind, serves as a perfect title for this album. The songs, Neilson divulges, reflect her developing a low tolerance for bullsh*t after years of encountering sexism in her life. They were also influenced by her being a mother of two young boys as well as by the death of her father, who led the family's band, the Neilsons, which was popular in Canada during the '90s. Neilson characterizes her new album as a mouthy lovechild of the current social climate and my own experiences as a woman, mother and daughter.
