First time release with all the songs recorded from this seminal Spanish band. Replica for cover and inside art work. 180 gram vinyl. Espasmódicos were formed in the Malasaña council, Madrid in the first days of 1981. J. Siemens (guitar), Kike (voice) and CSG71 (bass) were the first line-up, completed when Carlos Torero joined them as a drummer. Influenced by the first punk-hc bands coming out but also for some hard-rock elements, soon the first tracks were composed and then, in 1982, the mighty DRO label released their first 7" called "Recomendado para molestar a su vecino", featuring 3 songs that are one of the seminals steps into punk in this country. They had a guest on the person of Karlox from Polansky y El Ardor at the saxophone, something very weird in the bands of that first punk wave. Since the 7" was released the band started to be well known and they went to some Spanish TV shows to promote their work. Carlos Torero decided to leave the band and a studio-session drummer joined in the person of Carlos de Yebra. In 1983 the band recorded their last songs: first they registered the mighty tracks that went on to the great compilation "Punk, qué punk?" released by DRO. This songs were "Tía, vete a cagar" and a free cover-version from Sex Pistols called "Belsen was a gas", something that pointed the band to a weird status as the lyric was something into Nazism or fascism, something that the band never were. The second studio session for that year (and the last ever for the band) was to register their maxi-single "Espasmódicos", five songs together with the great art-work done by J. Siemens and Kike Kruel, very similar to the Crass's stuff and so. Beat Generation, absolutely fan of the band, is more than proud to release this LP with all their discography, together with a replica of the art-work.

Following the magical debut "The Mammoth Sessions", the new album dfrom GEORGIA'S HORSE is a study in heartbreak and loneliness set amidst the backdrop of the vast landscapes of American Southwest. Notable exceptions would be our dear and revered friends Daniel O'Sullivan (Miasma and the Carousel of Headless Horses and Grumbling Fur) and Alexander Tucker(his solo session, Grumbling Fur and Bardo Pond) and Josh Graham (A Fallen Black Deer, A Storm Of Light, Blood & Time). When Aidan Baker let us know he was back in the UK doing his solo material, we obviously had to ask him to join the exclusive club of repeaters and follow up his exemplary 2010 Nadja session with something entirely different. Aidan brought British tour-mates Plurals to the studio with him. Over the two tracks the collaboration has bore some beautiful and exoticfruit. A gradual unfurling of intricate layers of soundbuilds and envelopes the listener over "Dead Foxes In The Street"'s twenty minutes, creating a warm and uplifting aural atmosphere. The second half of the session is an entirely different affair. "Turning Children Into Mice" is a brooding, decidedly sinister beast, weaving a repetitive and increasingly dark threat, until it explodes into a hive of noise, and then slowly and poignantly dies a hero's death. This is truly a collaboration that makes the most of the musicians touring synchrony.

AMOR DE DIAS, the long-term collaboration between Alasdair MacLean (THE CLIENTELE) and Lupe Núñez-Fernández (PIPAS), release their sophomore album "The House at Sea" on Merge Records. While their debut album ,Street of the Love of Days" took three years to make, "The House at Sea" was recorded and mixed in only nine days. As a result, the sessions centered around a smaller band-the twin Spanish guitars and voices of Núñez-Fernández and MacLean, and an occasional rhythm section of James Hornsey and Howard Monk, both formerly of THE CLIENTELE. This is not a "new"?Apache Dropout platter, but an archival sidestep into the Fugs n' fried view of their early beginnings. Before the Indiana trio cemented their unique red-level, distorto proto-punk they focused on a more obliterated bent on traditional forms. Fiddle, distortion and echo drive most of these songs, as sung by Sonny Blood, that tout distrust of banks, ballot uncertainties and magnetic heads. It's a bleaker vision than the recent Bubblegum Graveyard LP on Trouble in MInd, even with the blownout take on Chuck Berry's "Memphis, Tennessee" and hints of Holy Modal Rounders to Kim Fowley doused throughout these sides. Culled from the group's first two self-released cassettes - "Cha Cha" in 2008 and "Lysergic Choogle: Not for Pigs" issued a year later -- the 10 songs are equally formed by their recording in a grain silo and the group's Magnetic South studio as much as the songwriting. Born in a Metz's bunker during the 2006 summer, The Feeling of Love is at first the solo project of G.Marietta (A.H. Kraken's guitarist and singer, In the red records). Ephemeral idea that initially couldn't have gone further than a few short songs, belched and recorded for the tape label Luisance Sonore. The postulate was to play on the garage blues and no-wave's codes in order to find a primitive, repetitive and minimal idea of rock'n'roll. Finally, after 2 years playing gigs in Europe, and a few 7" out (Yakisakana, Floridas Dying, Rococo records, etc.), the "one man band" mutates: from a one-piece to a two-pieces, the Feeling of Love is more generally a three-pieces band, with Seb Normal (the Normals, Crash Normal,etc.) on drums, and s. (A.H.Kraken, Vingt Mille Punks) on keyboards. The Feeling of Love put out then his first two LP's, "Petite tu es un hit" on Yakisakana and "Ok judge revival" on Kill Shaman records. On the latter, the blues and his repetitive gimmicks that were the driving force to reach a trance state are being perverted by krautrock and psychedelism. A year after, the band carries on with the "kraut space garage" vein on his third album, on Born Bad records (mars 2011). Songs stretch out, the drums go more tribal, the synth hammers out his keys on an infinite highway, and the guitar gets lost in delay pedal's fog.

Now, one could think that Gary are so absorbed in their slacker glory, that they don't even care about writing own songs. But that thought is quickly brushed away by the warm summerwind of Twisted Beds. And as soon as you reach Love Is Love and Hell Teema, you are sure that nothing here is copied! This is a band, completely at home with what they do. Sure, you can tell the influences and heroes in the songs. But it's got to be that way. Because this is POP! In capital letters. And Gary see everything, the whole world, just like Girls, Yuck or West Coast, through unique, new eyes. Through the eyes of teenagers. Teenagers who kiss for the first time at a Pavement show. After a career as a comic book artist as well as a musician in the bands Zoppo and Avec-A, Yuri Landman began designing experimental musical instruments. Based on prepared guitar techniques, he built his first instrument in 2001 to solve the inaccuracy of instant preparations. In 2006 he got in contact with Liars. We quickly invited them for a session - but with little expectation of anything happening in the near future. Lo and behold, he Fur came back with not only a date for recording, but the tantalising prospect of a new sound - more focussed and stripped back - with more op' sensibilities coming to the fore. Received an 8.1 rating from Pitchfork. "Sadly, many will hear Chris Corsano & Bill Orcutt's latest LP, Made Out of Sound, as 'not-jazz,' though it would be more aptly described as 'not-not-jazz.' In a better world, it would warrant above-the-fold reviews in Downbeat, or an appearance on David Sanborn's late-night show (if someone would only give it back to him). More likely, we can hope for a haiku review on Byron Coley's Twitter timeline to sufficiently connect the various improvised terrains trodden by this long-time duo—but if you've been able to listen past the overmodulated icepick fidelity of Harry Pussy, it should surprise you not an iota that Orcutt's style is rooted as much in the fractal melodies of Trane and Taylor as it is in Delta syrup or Tin Pan Alley glitz. As for Corsano, well, it may seem daft to call this particular record 'jazz' (because duh, it has a drummer), but to me Corsano is beyond jazz, almost beyond music, his ambidextrous, octopoid technique grappling many stylistic levers and spraying a torrent of light from every direction. Corsano's ferocity has elevated many 'mere' improv records to transcendence, but here he's crafted his polyrhythms within more narrative channels, bringing to mind his 'mannered' playing in the lamented Flower-Corsano duo. It's not 'groove' playing precisely, but it follows many grooves simultaneously, much like Orcutt's own melodic musings—which is why they're so naturally lock-in-key here. Which maybe makes it all the more surprising that Made Out of Sound was in fact recorded in different rooms on different coasts at different times, and stitched together by Orcutt on his desktop. Corsano recorded the drums in Ithaca, NY, and (as Orcutt states), 'I didn't edit them at all. I overdubbed two guitar tracks, panned left/right. I'd listen to the drums a couple times, pick a tuning, then improvise a part, thinking of the first track as backing and the second as the 'lead', though those are pretty fluid terms. I was watching the waveforms as I was recording, so I could see when a crescendo was coming or when to bring it down.' Fluidity ties the tracks together. With a little more groove and a little less around-the-beat maneuvering, one could almost hear the boiling harmonic layers as Miles-oid in 'Man Carrying Thing,' but with new-found Sharrockian modalities, Corsano accentuating the tumbling nature of the falling notes. The Sharrock vein continues with 'How to Cook a Wolf,' its Blind Willie-esque melodic simplicity and repetition extrapolated 360-style in a repetitive descending riff that falls into Cippolina-isms (by way of Verlaine ) until the end crashes upon the shore. Much like Orcutt's last solo album, Odds Against Tomorrow, there's a gentler, almost pastoral flow to some tracks ('Some Tennessee Jar,' 'A Port in Air,' 'Thirteen Ways of Looking') that calls to mind the mixolydian swamplands of Lonnie Liston Smith—but unlike Odds , other tracks ('The Thing Itself') smash that same lyricism into overdriven, multi-dimensional melodic clumps that push several vector envelopes at once in an Interstellar Space vein. With the help of Corsano, Orcutt has managed to slither even further out of the noise/improv pigeonhole lazy listeners/writers keep trying to shove him into. Looking at the back cover of Made Out of Sound , we should not see Orcutt hurling a guitar into the air with post-punk bravado, Corsano toiling behind him in the engine room—we should witness an instrument levitating from his hands, rising on invisible major-key tendrils of melody, fired by percussion, spiraling into an invisible event horizon..."—Tom Carter

“artificial Peace lasted barely a year, but in that short time managed to become a leading band in the early DC hardcorepunk scene. Pete Murray had played in the short-lived RED C while Mike Manos, ROB Moss and Steve Polcari were in a band called Assault & Battery. Towards the end of 1981 they formed A.P. and began playing around town. They were tight, fast, and aggressive, prerequisites for most of the DC bands of the time, but also had a unique sound and surprisingly catchy songs. I loved the band and offered to record them at Inner Ear Studios. In November 1981 the studio was still a 4-track in the basement of DON ZIENTARA’s family house. The ‘live’ room was actually his children’s playroom, and the mixing desk and tape machine were set up next to the furnace in what could be described as spacious closet. A.P. knocked out their 17 songs in almost no time. I think we recorded, mixed, and sequenced the tape in two or three days and were very happy with the results. There may have been some discussion about putting a few of these songs on a 7” EP, but at that time all of the label’s resources had been put into releasing Flex Your Head, our first full-length album. FYH was a compilation documenting the DC punk scene and since A.P were one of the great young bands coming up at that time, we included three songs from their session. There never was an opportunity to do anything with the other 14 songs as Dischord was poor and, like many of the bands in DC at that time, A.P. was not long for this world. However, before breaking up in the latter half of 1982, A.P. recorded again at CAB studios in Rockville, MD and released those recordings on a split 7” (w/The Exiled). This was the fi rst release on the Fountain of Youth label. After A.P. disbanded, Pete, Steve, and Mike started playing with Kenny Inouye and Andre LEE to form Marginal MAN. That band would release a 12” on Dischord as well as two full-lengths on Gasatanka and Giant respectively and continued playing for seven years. While working on the Dischord Archives, we came across the Artificial Peace November 81 session and decided that the tape should be finally and properly released in its entirety. Artificial Peace may well be an obscure band, but their effect on the DC scene was signifi cant and played a sure role in the evolution of the music.”—Ian MacKaye, 2010

NY's K-Holes have returned with "Dismania", the group's second full-length and first for Hardly Art. "Dismania" comes packed with the same kind of sinister, feverish punk skronk the New York quintet (featuring former members of Golden Triangle and the Black Lips) is known for. Their abdication follows a natural extension of the atrophied rock/roll ligament - unfurling from H. Williams to G. Vincent to Larry & the Blue Notes to the Pagans, Birthday Party, Flesh Eaters, Scientists, beyond - colored, at times, with smudges of primitive ceremony. As we follow their trajectory, running from the towering urban oppression, we catch whiffs of guttural noir in the honk of the sax, we hear the jagged swaths of guitar, we sense the bite and lust in their gang vocal. It's a dark, brutal, menacing trip; the sound of escape with the sheen of redemption, fueled by the low, thundering beat of tribal divination.

Colder than what might be comfortable is one of the warmest places you'll ever find yourself. There are particular melodies that bite you as they travel through the air and into your ears. Grave Babies hurl such soundwaves towards you like a ton of bricks. Yet even as Grave Babies' sounds maul you, their songs pull you right in. Their music describes a world of constant turmoil, and how exciting that world can be. With their newest release, Grave Babies expand this world beyond relentless struggle to recognize the inherent balance this constant back-and-forth actually brings. Two brand new songs from Seapony, exclusive to this release. First material to follow the band's debut LP, Go With Me, also available on Hardly Art. The music of Seapony is refreshing in its simplicity. Most songs use no more than three chords, with an average running time around two-and-a-half minutes. Other bands make a fuss about coloring outside the lines, but Seapony aspires to the reverse, making each ditty distinctive while operating within the same basic sonic framework: Fuzz-drenched guitar playing simple chord progressions, topped with concise melodic hooks and singer Jen Weidel's breathy vocals. In lieu of a human drummer, the Seattle trio entrusts timekeeping to a vintage gizmo the size of a desktop calculator. The lyrics to "Dreaming," the track that catapulted them into the spotlight in late 2010, are just six lines long. Like YoungMarble Giants and Beat Happening before them, this young three-piece has generated excitement that belies their music's modest means. "Sailing" gently drifts on a simple, sleepy melody and soft handclaps, allowing space for crystalline layers of both acoustic and electric guitar. B-side "I Saw You" is an upbeat number in the traditional Seapony vein that gets crazy with the drum machine...
