It's the 10 Year Anniversary of The Front Bottoms' self-titled debut, a beautiful alchemy of anthemic hooks andquotable confessions achievable only by the closest offriends, Brian Sella and Mat Uychich. Their songs are immediately recognizable, lyrics and riffs cleverly and effortlessly spun together into songs surprisingly real. LyricallyBrian Sella fires off scattershot images that the listener cangather up and make sense of like working puzzle pieces onthe floor. Romance, freedom, paranoia, partying and somehow getting clean all tumble together from song to song. The album includes fan favorites like "Flashlight," "Swimming Pool," and "The Beers," where Sella recalls beefingup for a Jersey Shore summer of steroids "because youlike a man with muscles and I like you."

Repress! This Tokyo band started channeling the spirits of the Japanese psychedelic underground in the Summer of 2012, quickly developing the sound of '60s psychedelia to a breathtaking degree. The band's s/t debut exerts an elemental power. Enlivening its sound with sitars, percussive drums, theremins, wind instruments and ethereal vocals, the band manages to sound powerfully spacious and lazily serene all at once.

Vinyl LP pressing. 2012 release, the first studio album in seven years from this Alt-Rock/Folk trio led by Grinderman/Bad Seeds mainstay Warren Ellis. Toward the Low Sun is a true humdinger. Ellis is always sawing away at something on the violin that kind of tightens our chest and gives US that ol' thousand-yard stare; Mick Turner wanders with hollow-bodied guitar from abstract and dreamy to punishing hard chord rock in the space of a breath, never sacrificing a sense of the awesome along the path; then there's Jim White, who is doing something that no one else does back there. Plus, he's drumming!

Named after a run-down lodge in New Jersey near where he grew up, Solar Motel was the first full-band project from Chris Forsyth. Originally released in 2013, it was considered his most ambitious and sublime work of "Cosmic Americana" to date, and the idea of the Motel also figured into a band where vacancies would open and close. "'Solar Motel' is the first record on which I overtly took rock tropes and twisted them into new shapes, incorporating so many of my interests and influences - the twin-guitar elegance of Television, the sprawl of West Coast psych, the boiled down Rock Minimalism of Rhys Chatham, the abstract tangles of free improv, an undercurrent of ecstatic jazz energy, and the studio textures of Eno/Cale/Roxy '70s art rock. 'Solar Motel' basically set the template for much of what I did for the remainder of that decade. Expanded 2xLP includes two studio outtakes from the original sessions, and a side-long live session recorded at WFMU.

(Abbey Road master but in the original sleeve) When the mysterious masked collective calling themselves Goat first emerged in 2012, armed with an incendiary debut album ‘World Music’ – there was, and there still isn’t, anyone else on earth quite like them. With their enticing mythology, music full of sinuous grooves and manic explosions of fuzz, Goat were outliers from the very beginning. ‘World Music’, received an avalanche of acclaim with critics, psych heads, outernational crate diggers etc, all left enraptured by its thunderous intensity, conjured from a singular mix of sounds from across the globe. ‘World Music’ is brimming with tracks now seen as ‘classic’ Goat live favourites. Tracks that have been wowing audiences all over the world; the afrobeat stomp of ‘Disco Fever’, the fuzz abuse of ‘Goathead’, the post-punk groove of ‘Let it Bleed’, the sing-along repetitive pop of ‘Run to your Mama’... From the first note to the last, ‘World Music’ oozes with a sonic confidence rarely seen on a debut album. What Goat have is unique – they’ve managed to create a sound unrestrained by genre or any other boundaries. So if you haven’t done so already, then it is now time you joined the Goat commune. On it's initial release in 2012, Colourmeinkindness found Basement pulling from not only one of emo's zeniths-early Sunny Day Real Estate-but also channeling heavy and sometimes hazy `90s alt-rock, with hints of behemoths like Pixies, Silverchair, and Catherine Wheel shaping the sound. Vocalist Andrew Fisher fit that grunge mold of a maudlin-but-thoughtful protagonist, ruminating on toxic relationships, personal desolation, and desperate longing, with slivers of optimism occasionally peeking through. From the dynamic one-two punch of churning opener "Whole" into the balladic doom of "Covet", to the sneering grunge of "Black" and gentle ease of "Comfort", Basement effortlessly moved between sounds and styles while keeping the underlying energy of their roots in punk and hardcore.Colourmeinkindness quickly won over fans old and new, but the members of Basement had already committed themselves to exploring other avenues in their lives and after a few impressive record release shows, the group went on hiatus. When they eventually returned the ripples of Colourmeinkindness were already clear: A thriving scene had begun to crop up around Basement's like-minded peers. Bands such as Balance and Composure, Superheaven, and Title Fight were reviving alt-rock radio for the YouTube generation and moving from being VFW staples to playing sizable venues. Post-hardcore, shoegaze, and grunge were becoming prevalent influences amongst new punk and emo bands. Newer acts were forming with a nod very much towards that `90s rock/emo crossover sound that Colourmeinkindess had captured so astonishingly well. With Colourmeinkindess Basement had begun to signal a sea change that would shape the next decade of big-room guitar music in a major way. Now the album's 10th anniversary expanded reissue offers a chance to rediscover the record. This unforgettable release has been updated with an embossed slipcase, updated artwork with photos and retrospective liner notes from the band, as well as a second disc that features an etched D-sid...

Formed in the Fall of 1991 by Brandon Capps (guitar & vocals), Kimber Lanning (drums), and Tim Patterson (bass), HALF STRING created a lush, guitar-driven brand of noise pop. Their sound was an antidote to the "desert jangle" bar band scene that dominated Tempe, Arizona at the time. While the group shared an aesthetic with much of the British shoegaze scene, and occasionally recalled the spirit of early 4AD and Factory Records, they certainly carved out a beautiful noise of their own. During their austere six-year life, half string inspired an underground music scene in their hometown, and gained a small but loyal following from beyond the desert. HALF STRING's first demo was hand delivered to Independent Project Records' Bruce Licher during the summer of 1992. Impressed, Licher released the three songs as the Eclipse 7" single on his revered post-punk fine art imprint. Matt Kruse joined on second guitar in 1993, adding another layer of texture andintricate melody to the band's broadening sound. This was evident on "Oval", HALF STRING's second single, and the subsequent "Tripped Up Breathing" EP, both released by IPR in 1994. Patterson left the band that winter, and was replaced by Dave Rogers, a multi-instrumentalist who added backing vocals. In 1995, Germany's Pop Goes On...

The fifth album by IMPERIAL TEEN, "Feel the Sound", succeeds completely at its goal, plainly stated in the collection's title. Like the sharpest pop music, "Feel the Sound" gets you to keep coming back for more, but unlike so much music today, it rewards you for doing so, giving you the experience of a fulfilled and yet still yearning, lively potential, one that will be further realized when the songs are performed live. From the exhilarating, propulsive "Runaway," which features the entire band on lead vocals (how many other groups can make that claim?), to the expansive final statement of "Overtaken," Roddy Bottum, Lynn Perko Truell, Will Schwartz, and Jone Stebbins feel the sound themselves and, in turn, make the listener feel it in ways immediate and pleasurable but also lasting and haunting.

Sprouting from the same mind that created the Books - one of the most acclaimed and innovative groups of the past decade - ZAMMUTO marks a deep reinvention of the highly detailed, genre-defying spirit that made seminal albums such as "The Lemon of Pink" and "The Way Out" possible. Given THE BOOKS' success as an experimental collage-pop project, founder and namesake Nick Zammuto could have comfortably extended that thread. Instead he has given us a record that is progressive and forward-looking, intense and driven, with hugely varied rhythms and melodies. The whispered, folk...

"With the obvious homage the name implies, you'd expect Hanoi Janes to be a group of riot grrrl angnsty types, displaced in time by about 20 odd years. Having taken on the nickname given to Jane Fonda in the 70s because of her anti-war stance on Vietnam, these girls would be all bent up about, well you know, stuff. You'd expect that, but you'd be wrong. It is in fact primarily the work of one guy from Sachen, Germany - Oliver Scharf. But then Hanoi Janes' album, 'Year of Panic', is able to inspire all kinds of misconceptions. Name of the band aside, would you expect a German guy (who's a bit handy with an eight-track) to produce a series of beautifully lo-fi, sub two-minute, surf-pop tracks, full of buzzing guitar and bubblegum spirit. Maybe - maybe not. But that's just what Scharf has done. The sound is distinctly garage, reminiscent of a 70s surf sound, and like The 5. 6. 7. 8's, Hanoi Janes are able to launch into the genre with the luxury of being removed from the scene itself. Tracks like opener, 'The Boys Are Out' and 'Beach Kids' are unashamedly infectious, utilising catchy hooks, hand claps and the odd 'Ooo ooo ooo' to great effect. The production is fuzzy, but that only adds to the overall charm of the album. Because charming is what it is, as Hanoi Janes have packed 'Year of Panic' with some real gems. 'Summer of Panic' offers something tinted with psychedelic sounds; 'Our Lives' could have been an early track by The Strokes had they been influenced by the Californian sun rather than the New York shadows; 'Good Bone' is a track which can only be performed if there are several oversized surf-boards nearby. 'Year of Panic' is lo-fi, scuzzy garage surf-pop at its finest and it deserves to be the sound-track of your summer" -BOWLEGS, UK

Nicole Dollanganger has been quietly crafting her own world since 2012. Over a number of self-released albums recorded mostly in her own bedroom and bathroom, her signature style of gothic folk is inspired by countless influences, none more than the archetype of the love song. Dollanganger's signature lyricism is front-and-center - usually accompanied by barely more than a few lonesome chords, narratives are idyllic, yet haunting - dream-like, yet startlingly real. The thesis of "Ode to Dawn Wiener" is as straightforward as its subtitle, but over ten songs it becomes clear that there is much more to these songs than what they offer at the surface.

Sometimes the best bands are just out in the world - waiting for you to discover them. Mirrorism formed nary a year ago in Ferrara, Italy & posted up some songs from their self-released cassette onto a message board late last year. The band's TiM debut snags two tunes from that blast of hot air & slaps 'em onto wax - where they belong! In their own words, Mirrorism are: "a philosophical, artistic and political movement based on chaos, disunity, multiple personality disorder and the refusal to make sense of any kind of artistic output." One gets a very real sense of the chaos lurking beneath these jagged stabs of post-punk fury - "Night Flight" kicks of the A-side with a rhythmic ticking of the drums, perhaps a warning of the musical time bomb about to explode thru your speakers! Short & sweet - it's over before it even began. "Exit The Loop" closes out the single with a ragged cacophany of garage scree & trebly guitar sirens! An exciting debut from this promising new band! The first edition of this single is pressed on randomly mixedvinyl & includes a download code!

Andrew Anderson is a prolific guy, having recorded two albums of dumb-punk ferocity with his band, Hipshakes & released three albums & a number of singles under his solo project moniker, "Proto Idiot". Proto Idiot's previous output has had one foot firmly planted in the Hipshakes school of frenzied, nervousgaragepunk intensity, & the other in a rickety, Kinks-ian,English-countryside gallop. His debut for TiM however is a step in a new direction, delivering smart & urgent pop tunes having more in common with the DIY smarts of bands like Television Personalities, Wire & The Soft Boys than The Oblivians or The Gories. "You're Wrong" yearns with the strummy confections of a lost classic & it's earworm melody will have a hard timegetting unstuck from your brain! "You Can't Hide" burns with the loping maudlin of guitars & careens into a head-bopper of sugary pop-perfection. Deleted Scenes is the debut album by futurist dub pop duo Standish/Carlyon, comprising bassist/vocalist ConradStandish and guitarist Tom Carlyon, both formerly of noir rock group Devastations. Deleted Scenes continues the process begun on the final Devastations album Yes, U, moving away from full-band arrangements towards submerged electronic rhythms and late-night altered states. The atmosphere throughout is oneof surreal chic. In rich baritone or impressive falsetto, Standish intones dark, absurdist lyrics over the band'sshimmering take on dub, a sensual, ultramodern gloss disturbed by deep vibrations. There's the pulse-quickening progression of Moves, Moves, the spectral faux-soul of "Feb Love" (featuring vocals from Standish's wife Jonnine, one-half of HTRK), the icy grind of "Gucci Mountain", the synthetic fractured funk of "Nono/Yoyo" or the deviant denouement that is 2 5 1 1, a collaboration with Benjamin John Power of Blanck Mass and FuckButtons. The album was recorded in London with Aaron Cupples and mastered by the iconic Denis Blackham, who has workedwith everyone from Brian Eno to Pan Sonic. Standish/Carlyon have played Belgium's Sonic City Festival (curated by Liars) alongside Chris & Cosey and Rhythm & Sound, as well as All Tomorrow's Parties' new Australian incarnation I'll Be Your Mirror, alongside the likes of My Bloody Valentine, Pere Ubu and Einsturzende Neubauten.FIYL: Twin Shadow, Coil, White Car, HTRK

It's something you take-or sometimes steal, like a thief or a baserunner-but seems you can never get enough of it. It's regulated, rationed, and billed by volume, like water or electricity or ice cream. Sometimes you have to beg the boss for more, or even for a trifling taste. So let's make time! Let's roll the dice and get these old bones out on the road again. Steve Gunn's new album imagines the fugitive moments afforded us during time off, out, and away as occasions for dilatory investigations into our immediate environments and interiors. Time Off (PoB-08) showcases the virtuosic guitarist and songwriter's oblique character sketches and story-songs, some of which, like "Lurker" and "Street Keeper," portray specific denizens of his Brooklyn neighborhood. "Old Strange" celebrates Jack Rose, a dear and departed friend and muse. Those contemplative studies frame Gunn's most affecting, accessible and articulate work of pure songcraft to date. His definitive statement as a songwriter, Time Off represents the culmination of nearly fifteen years of stylistic experimentation as a solo artist, a member of GHQ and the Gunn-Truscinski Duo, and more recently, as a guitarist in fellow Philadelphia-bred troubadour Kurt Vile's touring band the Violators. Gunn's first eponymous album with a full band, Time Off harnesses a core trio format to...

Damien Jurado is the sort of songwriter who straddles rock's past and future, and with each record contributes a new chapter to an ever-fruitful body of work. Before we move onto the nextchapter, we look back at his first album with Secretly Canadian. An instant classic when released in 2003, "Where Shall You Take Me?" was his fifth full-length, and is a beautiful collection of ten Raymond Carver-esque vignettes terror and bliss inMiddle America. Arriving two decades afterSpringsteen's "Nebraska", Jurado put the darker, more complicated side of the heartland back on the map with his tales of young love (some requited; some not), innoc...

George W. Bush. Cormac McCarthy novels. Chainsaw massacres. Texas has a reputation for being a grim place. Sure, there's the rock n' roll haven of Austin, the metropolitan hubs of Dallas and Houston, and the weird art commune of Marfa. But by and large, it's a land of dry counties and conservatism. Which makes the demented psych garage of Lubbock's the Numerators all the more compelling. Northeastern Texas is perhaps the most inhospitable region of the state for a young band of misfits to combine a love of David Lynch's twisted take on the 50s with a requisite dash of Lone Star homage to 13th Floor Elevators, yet somehow the Numerators have managed to thrive under such stark conditions. Now based in Brooklyn, the trio continues to belt out their hallucinatory brand of reverb-drenched garage rock on their latest single for Suicide Squeeze. The "Dead" b/w "Finally Sees" 7" is limited to 500 copies.

You may have experienced ARRINGTON DE DIONYSO'S MALAIKAT DAN SINGA as an unexpected live force, pushing up through the earth like daffodils in late winter; or maybe you're familiar with their previous exploits in the studio, "Malaikat dan Singa" [KLP215] and "Suara Naga" [KLP226], which burn clean with fragrant traumas. "Open the Crown" is similarly passion-filled, with new vistas (channeled hallucinations) exploring English (previously only the Indonesian language was employed) as their stomping ground to expand parallel themes anew. Open the Crown conveys tendrils of raw energy emanating from the head - dream visions translated directly to audio outrage. Heavy. And sexy. To be expected from ARRINGTON DE DIONYSO and his molten collection of MALAIKAT DAN SINGA who manipulate the "form'd and the formless" to create from within this broken system.

So it's no surprise that his sophomore release "MCII"- and first disc for Merge Records - is all about new beginnings. "Since the first record came out, my life has changed quite a bit", Cronin says, referencing his move to San Francisco and tourswith Ty Segall as well as with his own band. "I was presented with a whole new slew of problems and situations that I was trying to work through". "Am I Wrong" and "Shout It Out" dissect his fears over a new relationship, while "I'm Done Running from You" and "Weight" find him freaking out about what...

With their fourth full-length album to be released in as many years, THE MEN proudly present the sweeping ,New Moon", the most intensely personal and immersive installment yet. Never content to draw on the same methods twice, nor to recline under the heel of expectation, THE MEN quit the city in early 2012 to head for Big Indian, NY - transforming a remote Catskills locale into a full-fledged stray dog studio home. Entering with only the most skeletal sketches, the house was selected as an incubator for its technical limitations. Familiar faces remain, the core of guitarists Nick Chiericozzi and Mark Perro, with drummer Rich Samis all returning from last year's much-acclaimed ,Open Your Heart". However, inr...

Swedish electronic producer, Hannes Norrvide (aka LUST FOR YOUTH) has been inconspicuously hinting at his brighter side throughout his last couple of releases. What began as a lo-fi, atonal, bedroom drone-synth project in 2009 has slowly but surely been evolving into a full frontal synth-pop assault. The Quietus quite aptly caught on to these genres' overlapping breeding ground in his review of ,Growing Seeds" for The Quiteus "If you take the two musical genres of noise and synth pop and trace them back, back through Wolf Eyes and La Roux, all the way back to Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire and The Normal, you reach a point where the two lines wind together and fuse...In the last few years, a number of groups have emerged who, whether by intention or not, are working to reconcile these two paths of noise and synth-pop."

DREAM BOAT is the music of Page Campbell and Dan Donahue. "Eclipsing" features beautiful harmonies and waves of electronic texture. With the help of engineer Suny Lyons, they bring together an ensemble featuring John Fernandes of THE OLIVIA TREMOR CONTROL and CIRCULATORY SYSTEM, and Scott Spillane of NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL and THE GERBILS. It's a really unique music that could be called "cosmic folk". Page has contributed to multiple bands such as HOPE FOR A GOLDEN SUMMER, CREEPY, and DARK MEAT. Dan has contributed lyrics to ELF POWER, GREAT LAKES, OF MONTREAL, and most recently BEAR IN HEAVEN. Fans of Cat Power, Fennesz, Neil Young, Sandy Denny, and Brian Eno will definitely enjoy this record. DREAM BOAT exists where the earthly meets the ethereal. It's hypnotic, haunting, and sometimes serene.

Regal Degal is a power trio consisting of Josh da Costa [Gemini] on guitars and vocals, Josiah Wolfson [Libra] on bass, and Jamen Whitelock [Virgo] on drums. Formed in Brooklyn in late 2009, the group recently relocated to Los Angeles. The group's sound pulls omnidirectionally from across the musical spectrum, drawing from post-punk, krautrock, 60's psychedelic/ freakbeat, 80's new wave and indie, German minimal house, and the music of Africa. The music could be described as hyper rhythm conscious, melodic, atmospheric, and kinetic, with one foot firmly in the past and an eye fixed towards the future. In the center resides Regal Degal, channeling and reinterpreting all individual and shared inspirations into a sound best referred to as deep rock.

Peace recorded its sophomore LP in Pamela Anderson's hometown, a fogged-in hamlet named Ladysmith on the east coast of Vancouver Island. The World is Too Much With Us builds on the depth and drama latent in Peace's sound. Connor's bass-lines menace and hypnotize. Mike's guitar solos explode suddenly in wah-pedal freak-outs. Geoff's tom-toms thud with a tribal intensity. And Dan's lyrics, for which he's been referred to as Vancouver's "post-punk poet laureate", alternate between images of defiant despair and love-sick yearning.

After a 3-year hiatus following the sprawling double-album, Growing - San Diego's Sleeping People return with this hypnotic fever-dream of a 12". Following the departure of guitarist Amber Coffman (who left to pursue her other group, The Dirty Projectors, full-time), SLEEPING PEOPLE's core group - guitarist Kasey Boekholt, bassist Kenseth Thibideau, and drummer Brandon Relf - reunited with original guitarist, the nimble-fingered Joileah Thalmann. THE SLEEPING PEOPLE trademarks are all here: angular, dissonant riffs, mind-bending counterpoint guitar interplay, and grooving, stop/start dynamics. The major evolution here is the hefty amount of patience and primal repetition; each song unfolds over many minutes, revealing something new with repeated listens. In other words, it sounds like what you would expect from a band that draws equal inspiration from Yes, Steve Reich, and Tool.

Trevor Montgomery is a craftsman. By day he's a skilled tile setter, a job taxing to both the mind and body. By night he's an equally meticulous and hard working musician, coaxing just the right tones out of his vintage drum machines and synths to carry his tales of love and redemption. As a tile setter and as a musician, his job is the same: assembling things of beauty to fill empty spaces. Montgomery's previous album The Trickster (St. Ives) was inspired by his youth, wandering in the woods, riding trains, taking meth and heavy psychedelics, and narrowly cheating death on more than one occasion. On Navigated Like the Swan, his debut under the Young Moon moniker, he emerges like a shaman from the woods of his youth -- his darkness is filled with light, cynicism and macabre fixations washed away by a revitalizing and intoxicating love.

Wymond's previous EP "Earth Has Doors" was about intangible and esoteric concepts; the music drifted beautifully in somewhat of an oceanic, boundless state. For the album it was very important for him to make the songs be felt somatically. In his own words, "I wanted it to hit the body, I wanted it carnal." Whereas the EP had been a drawn out labor of love he worked on and then shelved for several years, most songs on "Un...

Led Er Est emerged from a series of jam sessions that core members Shawn O'Sullivan and Sam De La Rosa started having in early 07, using bass guitar and some cheap drum machines and synths. They were inspired to record music largely by 70's synth prog, and 80's lo-fi electronics and industrial music. Owen Hutchinson joined the band for their first live show, at the Wierd party that December. In November of 09' Wierd Records released their debut full length. In spring of 2010, they toured Europe with Xeno and Oaklander, playing shows in the UK, Belgium, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Italy. Subsequently they released a 7" and then the May EP on Captured Tracks. On stage and in the studio Led Er Est create a thick wall of atmospheric soundscapes using vintage analog recording devices, samplers and synths using sci-fi soundtracks and cold wave as reference points. For fans of OMD, Giorgio Moroder, Savage Republic, John Carpenter film soundtracks.

Limited edition version on clear vinyl.JESSE RUINS is a Tokyo-based unit, which formed in the spring of 2010 by Nobuyuki Sakuma, as a solo project. In December 2011, Nah joined the band and they shortly thereafter signed to Captured Tracks. "Dream Analysis" is their second release on the label. The six song EP conjures a romantic and atmospheric haze, a little bit of the past, mostly a glimpse of the future. Already generating lots of buzz, the complete EP fills in all the missing pieces. Jesse Ruins is using this release as an introduction and a launching pad for more of a good thing."Little is known about Jesse Ruins. Well, other than he is from Japan and makes doom-laden, industrial-tinged pop that demands to be used as a soundbed to sweeping aerial footage of an erupting volcano. Yes, that specific." - The Guardian"Vocals are sparse on every song; instead the tracks contain suppressed whispers which ride the soothing pads quietly as if they aren't there. It all adds up to the dreamy aura you enter when listening to the EP and it also enhances the mystery of the duo, because you are never quite sure if they are male or female whispers. When you come to the end of the EP the cloak still never fully comes off and there is still that air of secrecy about the Japanese duo which keeps them interesting. This is a debut that should keep listeners day dreaming until a full length album appears, scheduled for release later this year." - ADDICTMUSIC.CO.UK

DUNES are a mysteriously ethereal and minimal trio from Los Angeles. Appropriating pop and experimental music into a familiar swirl, while retaining a fresh outlook and approach, DUNES inhabit a space of tweaking, twisting, imagining moments and emotions from the past, destined to end up as their future. Stephanie Chan, formerly of Austin Texas bands FINALLY PUNK and THE CARROTS plays guitar and sings in DUNES, she creates surreal and dreamy narratives with her lyrics and uniquely beautiful, powerful voice. Mark Greshowak plays barritone guitar and sometimes bass, he used to write songs and tour with seattle area band TALBOT TAGORA, now he and Stephanie weave their melodies back and forth, making lush tones for our eardums. This companion recording combines audio excerpts from the book's text with an original musical score by NO AGE, examining these questions and allowing the listener space to think. This is a limited record with beautiful and enticing sounds split in two separate channels for your listening pleasure.Brilliantly designed by Brian Roettinger who was nominated for a Grammy for his work on NO AGE's "Nouns" In the essay called "The Death of Subculture," Aaron Rose (Alleged Gallery, director of Beautiful Losers and co-curator of MoCA's record-smashing exhibit Art in the Streets) makes an impassioned call to arms, urging the next generation of artists to end the collage era by adopting a philosophy of creative innovation. And in her essay "Living in the Mess," Mandy Kahn (columnist, Foam magazine) considers whether the collage of references that surrounds us might negatively a_ect the way we feel. Combined with the musical elements of NO AGE, who exhibit that they are in the prime of ambient excursions and findings, this record is not something to miss.

Returning for her second collaboration with the duo is Victoria Bergsman who previously contributed her dulcet tones to Honey Mine. As Young triumphs with glittering bombast - a true Balearic anthem. Cascading 808 fills mingle with steely acoustic guitar and chipmunked vocals while deep kettledrums and pulsing strings balance things out. It's a glorious celebration of Summer's fade, a song that looks forward by glancing back. Animal Collective's Panda Bear, fresh off the tremendous success of Person Pitch, delivers a reinterpretation that is at times frenetic and jarring, and at others meditative and soothing. London's Girl Unit revisits the pitched vocals and builds a sprawling epic that erupts into a throbbing payoff before subsiding to begin anew. Finally, the Korallreven boys wrap things up with a massive expansion of their original - an evolving, layered rhythm section lays the foundation for ecstatic builds of shimmering, hazy synths.

Most of the tunes on Keep Away The Dead were born at Mara Hall in Mara, BC (pop. 350) where bed tracks were laid down in the crisp air during the depth of winter. The arctic atmosphere of that empty, cavernous, hardwood structure was the perfect complement to Huebert's sensibility: a tense and acute restraint; a shivering, biting, sometimes bitter rending of barebones, folk-inflected rock music.Siskiyou's debut was a stunning little scrapbook of short, sharp tunes; Keep Away The Dead ramps up with subtle care and clarity - something closer to a sonic novella. The resulting song cycle yields a strikingly cold-eyed, warm-hearted album, marked by quiet defiance and desperation, where each tune feels like another precious log thrown on a lone campfire burning in the cold night.

Without a doubt their most meditative release since their Travels In Constants debut, Blue Hour eases off the jazz and dub influences that had become a trademark of The Drift's sound, and instead focuses on hypnotic repetition and subtle, textural layering of guitars, keyboards, electric bass and drums. Beautiful, fragile melodies descend into sheets of noise atop an unwavering lockstep groove, and the near-silence of a single bass note becomes alternately haunting and near transcendent. It is a cathartic memorial to a dear friend and invaluable collaborator, and the perfect beginning to a new chapter in The Drift's resilient story.
