Picture the scene if you can. It’s Sunday evening at the Meakusma Festival, 2019. A small audience (in varying states of inebriation and recovery) sit patiently on the floor, drenched in soft sunlight. Fizzy Veins is set up to play - his guitar resting on his knees while he stares into his laptop with an expression displaying amusement and fear in equal measure. He tentatively speaks into the microphone. There’s a lot of reverb. I don’t think anybody has the slightest idea what he’s saying. I assume he’s delivering a joke, but it’s very hard to tell. People laugh. After yet more tweaks to his gear he starts to play some loose, bendy phrases on the guitar, and we are all gently vaporised up Mount Effervescent. Our benevolent guru sits at the peak, speaking in tongues to the freshly formed congregation. The beats start to roll out and the sun begins to set in the evening sky. Fizzy transitions and he continues his long distance narration from deep inside his own reverb. It sounds like he’s in another room. On another planet, more like.

Witnessing the show, as I did, left me wondering how he even manages to boot-up his computer.. let alone produce an album as brilliantly formed and coherent as this!

The inspiration for the ScorpKlub project was to create unique works, using the remarkable collection of Toulon Art Museum's as a palette, through a multidisciplinary exchange of sound and moving image. Hifiklub responded in music to the digital collages created by James Kerr, who mischievously altered twenty artworks ranging from the 15th to the beginning of the 20th century, from the museum's permanent collection. The work of assembling the visuals took place in James Kerr's studio in Montreal, whereas the musical component to the project was created in two stages: - The first recording session took place at the end of January 2021 at Coxinhell studio in Saint-Aygulf, with Iggor Cavalera (MixHell, Cavalera Conspiracy, Pet Brick, co-founder of Sepultura) recording remotely. This session resulted in ten original compositions, to which Kerr animated his videos to. - The second stage of Hifiklub took place in Toulon on July 2 and 3, 2021 during the Murex Festival, with the remote participation of Alain Johannes (Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures, Eleven). This session of sound research and recording was done in front of a live audience, to which the music was created in response to ten premade animations created by Kerr. ScorpKlub I & II will be broadcasted in 2022 on the internet in the form of two seasons: one with Iggor Cavalera + one with Alain Johannes.

Nemesis Lately is the second full-length album released by Somnus Throne. This LP is very much a continuation of their first album(Burning World Records 2020), but with much more attention to detail, a further exploration of the depths of each niche within 'doom,' and a greater variety of sounds. Think just as much heaviness as the first album with less drone and more action. Nemesis Lately goes everywhere across the landscape of doom, stoner, heavy psych, and grunge from a welcoming kick in the teeth by a Motorhead-esque first track, through shades of Acid King, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, Black Angels, The Melvins, Dead Meadow, High on Fire, The Sword, Electric Wizard, Dopelord, Black Pyramid all the way to a concluding track that strives at echoes of Led Zeppelin's acoustic prowess. It goes without saying that the entire album, and the entire Somnus Throne catalogue in total, is never more than one decapitated bat away from Black Sabbath worship. 2022 The Boppers celebrate 45 years as a band with a brand-new album. On “White Lightning” they kind of find themselves back at the start again even if it also means opening new doors. They’ve collaborated closely with Sulo (singer and front man of Diamond Dogs), musical friend Eva Eastwood (Swedish rockabilly/country star) on the songwriting and let legendary producer Tomas Skogsberg (The Hellacopters, Backyard Babies etc) set the sound. It kicks off with a riotous cover of Chris Speddings 1975 gem “Motorbikin’” and that sets the bar high for the rest. But no one will get disappointed. “White Lightning” is an album that shows a band spreading their 45 years of duty and musical knowledge. Chris Spedding returns the favour by joining them on a Gene Vincent twangy guitar on “Teddyboy’s Are Back”. The Boppers pay their tribute to punk by turning the Generation-x cover “King Rocker” into a jungle hop and Nicke Andersson from The Hellacopters put his mark on the 60’s coloured “Callous Rain” and “Motorbikin” with fiery solos.

If fate didn’t quite ordain the circumstances for Interpol’s seventh album, it was at least fortunate that the band had happily concluded their Marauder cycle on stage in front of 30 thousand-odd Peruvian fans. Rather than be sent scrambling like so many other musicians on tour or promoting new music, when lockdown clamped in March 2020, Interpol quickly got into a productive mood. Coming from a group whose early work was characterised by Polish knife-wielders and incarcerated serial killers, you might expect Interpol’s pandemic record to be an emotional tar pit — doubly so, given the presence of towering producer-engineer duo Flood and Moulder on the boards. Cold Shoulder is a hardcore band from Toronto, Canada, formed in 2016. Within that time, they have presented three outstanding releases: the T.O.H.C. In addition to their recorded output, Cold Shoulder has completed multiple tours from coast to coast of the United States. In contrast, "Come Back" reflects on the desire to reconnect with a partner. Recalling all the optimism of love felt in its infancy, Van Etten begins with the plain beauty of just her voice and a guitar, building the arrangement alongside the call to "come back" to anyone who has lost their way, be it from another person or from themselves. Hovering between darkness and light, "Born" is an exploration of the self that exists when all other labels - mother, partner, friend - are stripped back. Unlike Van Etten's previous albums, there will be no songs off the album released prior to the record coming out. The ten tracks on We've Been Going About This All Wrong are designed to be listened to in order, all at once, so that a much larger story of hope, loss, longing and resilience can be told. This is, in itself, a subtle act of control, but in sharing these songs it remains an optimistic and generous one. There is darkness here but there is light too, and all of it is held together by Van Etten's uncanny ability to both pierce the hearts of her listeners and make them whole again. Things are not dark, she reminds us, only darkish.

Skeletal Earth was one of those bands that stuck out. Being influenced by both death and thrash metal as well as the more crossover style where hardcore punk meets metal they came up with an original sounding couple of demos and albums. ‘De.ev o.lu’shun’ is their second full length. Dead Register, hailing from Atlanta, have expertly weaved elements of Post Punk, Goth, Doom, and Shoegaze into a Post Rock wet dream of melancholy and soaring melodies since their demo Trvns Blvk in 2014. The band have been genre bending for the last 8 years and improving with each and every release from their debut album Fiber to their latest single, Don't Fail Me Now, released last year and recently remixed by Death Beat/Darkwave guru Snakes of Russia just a month ago now. Dead Register's sophomore full length, Alive, is the band's magnum opus, and one I cannot personally get enough of. In a universe where singles reign supreme, Dead Register have crafted a perfectly balanced album that works best when experienced from beginning to end. The cover art for Alive is noteworthy as it may be the very last album to ever feature the late great Stephen Kasner's (Sunn0))), Isis, Justin Broadrick, etc) work. Upon first hearing Dead Register over 6 years ago now, it was surprising to discover there is not one traditional guitar present on any recording. Everything you hear is coming from either a Fender Bass VI (made popular between 1961-1975) or a 4 string bass and synthesizers. While we can come to assume 95% of bands in the metal and rock world operate within the ordinary box of the "guitar, bass, and drum" paradigm, this trio approach writing a bit differently which is evident in every bit of music they create. Emerald Sea, the third album from New York-based audiovisual project Sound of Ceres, tells the story of how the universe comes to know itself. Rendered in dynamic, ambitious orchestral passages, it forms the basis of future stage performances intended to draw its half-submerged narrative into the visual sphere. In its dreamlike impressions, it could also be the soundtrack to a long-forgotten early musical film - an experience that delighted and transported audiences and then vanished from record, surviving only in the imprint of memory. Written in three acts, Emerald Sea follows two deities who trail each other through the furthest reaches of experience. There is the Universe, all that exists, voiced by performance artist Marina Abramovic. And there is Venus, transformer of matter and avatar of love, sung by the group's lead vocalist Karen Hover (who goes by k). Through a dazzling suite of songs inspired by Les Baxter's midcentury exotica, Maurice Ravel's ballet Daphnis et Chloé, and Gustav Holst's The Planets, Emerald Sea studies intimacy on both an interpersonal scale and a cosmological one. Connection and severance, joy and grief, wonder and bewilderment all tumble through its scope. In the widest frame, the universe begins, meets itself, and ends. In the closest frame, two people encounter each other, grow close, and then separate. These stories are two views of the same fractal. Delisa Paloma-Sisk was born and raised in Clarksville, Tennessee, an hour north of Nashville and many more from Lares, Puerto Rico, where she spent extended time with her mother's side of the family while growing up. Deli recalls hearing her grandmother's neighbor playing classical guitar every night during one visit to Lares, the melodies lingering and resurfacing while she self-taught herself the instrument in her early teens and then formally studied it in college. Deli would gradually bring together the guitar, synthesizer, and her own voice, recording and releasing two albums, Feelsounds and TQM (Te Quiero Mucho), as Diatom Deli in 2015 and 2017. Written between 2016 and 2019, Time~Lapse Nature embodies Deli's generous, ongoing excavation of her inner emotive spectrum and offers listeners a lush, loving overgrowth; a hiding place for heart-centric radiation. After several synchronistic and collaborative encounters, the album was channeled with the help of Michael Hix (synthesizers, connective magic) and Bryan Talbot (engineering, soundscapes), Deli steadfast at the center, a transparent catalyst for the album's omniscient landscapes and fleeting tenor. Deli's affecting process is palpable throughout the eight songs of Time~Lapse Nature; moods move like planets in thick orbit, spinning forward like an anti-apology, embracing new feeling frequencies where vulnerability radiates tenderly in tonal embers, conveying an exalted melancholy that sticks the moment it lands. It is a record about attempting to find light in the wake of trauma and working to reframe one's life in a way that allows for the possibility of joy.

Written and recorded throughout 2020/2021 amidst the height of a global pandemic, the eight tracks that comprise Terino's third LP started life in his home studio in a New England forest and came to fruition with contributions from musicians based all throughout the world. Cello tracks flown in from Russia, French horns from Italy, harps from the UK, and even a musical saw from Greece. Notably featured on a number of tracks is the distinctive voice and hauntingly beautiful violin of legendary Americana singer/songwriter Jolie Holland. It was as a result of the lockdowns that many new connections were able to be forged remotely and Terino's experience of making this record became a tool to feel connected to other musicians and artists in a time when such camaraderie was greatly needed.

By pure force of volume, Gentle Heat creates a sound all their own driven by propulsive rhythms and dissonant melodies.

With their newest release Sheer, Gentle Heat reaffirms this commitment with surgical efficiency. Even the most formless sounds have purpose; ethereal soundscapes give way to humming, knotted feedback. The addition of vocalist/ keyboardist Sarah Clausen has enabled the project to dive deeper into the ambient aspects of their sound, blending the record into a knotted cohesive piece.

On Sheer, Gentle Heat pares down their formula to the point that every piece becomes essential and immediate even as they are weaving together layers of sound. According to guitarist/ vocalist David Algrim, “The idea for this project has always been to create sonically dense music viewed through the lens of pop structure. With Sheer, the goal was to refine that concept to its most concise form.” The result is a dynamic sound as likely to excite seasoned shoegaze listeners as it is to turn new heads in the back of the venue bar.

While the lineup has changed since the band’s inception, Gentle Heat has maintained a musical coherence through their four releases that affords the germination of new ideas and fresh sounds while remaining reverent to their past. The synthesis of experience and influences offered up on Sheer marks a big step forward for the group, and with it, a momentum that is proportional to the energy of their sound.

Inspired by the intensity of lockdown, the self-titled debutalbum by electro-pop project Gates of Light, is the result of acollaboration between five artists across four cities, threetime zones and two continents. Hailing from Glasgow, singer-songwriter Louise Quinn and producer Bal Cooke teamed up with London-based DJ and producer Scott Fraser; Parisian musician, DJ and producer Kid Loco; and film director and photographer, New York's Tim Saccenti - who has previously worked with Run The Jewels and Pharell- to create a sublime, electro-pop reflection on the grief, insularity and peculiar highs of lockdown. Immediately after hearing the album, revered post-punk musician and producer Kramer offered to release the vinyl edition on his iconic cult label Shimmy-Disc, which boasts an impressive back catalogue of artists including Daniel Johnson, Low and Galaxie 500. A project grounded on collaboration - born from a period of disconnect - Gates Of Light perfectly amplifies the longing, confusion, lucid dreams and appreciation of the outdoors that the pandemic ignited in so many over the last couple of years. Originally written and recorded by Louise and Bal from their bedroom studio in Glasgow whilst their one-year-old twins slept, the tracks were then sent to Scott and Kid Loco who remixed the tracks from home studios in London and Paris before Tim created the artwork and a video for the track `When The Leaf Falls'. Gates Of Light is the latest project from Louise and Bal who have released music in the past as A Band Called Quinn and DAWNINGS. Louise and Scott Fraser have also previously collaborated following a chance encounter at a nightclub in Glasgow. Legendary Italian musician Sergio Messina serves up his 13 track Sensual Musicology on Hell Yeah this March. It comes a couple of years after he first released on the label's Buena Onda compilation and takes in everything from demented waltz to grown-up jazz, groovy beach music to heart-aching melancholia with artwork by virtuoso Italian AD DeeMo. Now based in Lombardy, Sergio was there at the birth of pirate radio in the mid-seventies and eventually produced Radio art for national broadcaster Rai. At the same time, his DJ career took off and he helped establish Hip hop in Rome before taking his own live show to the stage with a mix of PCs, samplers and tape recorders as early as 1989. Frank Zappa declared himself a fan and in the years since Sergio has done everything from radio art to producing Neapolitan reggae and hip hop band 99 Posse, producing his own solo albums and writing for monthly music magazine Rumore.

On top of this, he has both written books about and delivered lectures on the digital porno revolution, as well as teaching History of Pop Culture at the Istituto Europeo di Design in Milan. All this makes him a truly original creative thinking who has long been immersed in many niche facets of popular culture. Sensual Musicology took several years and four different locations to happen. Its release has been delayed by the pandemic, during which Sergio lost many friends and relatives close to him. As a result, the album is dedicated to all of them. It is a record that addresses many topics from economic migration to jazz piano, 60s blues motifs to corruption, pollution and racism via Michael Jackson covers, odes to West Coast guitar albums and spaced-out pieces of electronica. Opening with the beautifully delicate Mingus melodies of 'Goodbye Porkpie Hat' the album roams through the bluesy Italo-American-Jamaican groove of 'Amara,' slow melancholy of 'Sometimes Remember' with classy vocals from chanteuse Valeria Rossi and 'The Way You Make Me Feel', an acoustic rebuild of Michael Jackson's hit song. Then comes the serenade that is 'Just Because You're Dead,' and ‘Sono Stufa di Tutto’ which is based around a protest speech recorded from the radio in the 1980s. Jon Hassell Beach Bar' is a musical hybridisation for dancing pleasure. The second half of the album takes in 'Ouana Di lambo' which is the Four Twenties taking you to a cocktail bar in the tropics, 'Benjamino Placido' which is a melody for a man who inspired Sergio to start writing his columns, and 'Nowhere Special' which is a tribute to West Coast guitar albums. Closer ‘Switchblade Bolero' has a Zappaesque theme. Sensual Musicology is a rich and diverse musical world that is as thought-provoking and deep as it is emotionally rewarding.

Thanatophobia isn’t just a big word, it’s the first Marc With a C album of (mostly) original material for what’s being dubbed “Phase II”; After 21 years of portraying a combustible persona to fit the bizarre, darkly humorous yet emotionally devastating, minutiae-obsessed, lo-fi DIY records that Marc Sirdoreus created to find a way to bring them to the stage, Marc returns for “Phase II” dropping the stage act, keeping the stage name, and being himself on record for the first time.

Thanatophobia sees Marc Sirdoreus, (a genderfluid person compared with the highly male-presenting Marc With a C Phase I persona, and Marc is fine with “he” for pronouns), confronting most of his deepest fears and anxieties head first. For the production, Marc limited himself to only the instruments that he would have owned in December of 1999 if a record were expected within six months, often beginning with melodic ideas from songs that an early producer had forced Marc to remove from the sessions of the earliest Phase I albums. Expect sonic experiments, the prerequisite character studies, brutal truths about the human condition, and plenty of moments when you aren’t sure if you’re supposed to laugh, cry, or both.

The vinyl, CD and digital download will come with a bonus “enhanced” stereo mix to play in sync with Thanatophobia known as Phobophobia, to give a highly immersive view into this sound-world. Catherine Blackard created a potentially groundbreaking piece of visual art for each format that will reveal wholly different cover art depending on the color of the light bulb you have near your player.

Perhaps most surprising of all is Marc’s decision to leave his DIY days in the past, partnering with Needlejuice Records, also reaching an agreement with the label to reissue as much of the ’99-‘21 Phase I Marc With a C catalog on every format possible.

Jason Quever has been releasing timeless guitar-based dream pop as Papercuts since 2004, impervious to trends or micro genres that have come and gone around him. Crafted shortly after Jason's relocation back to the San Francisco Bay Area after several years in LA, the new album revels in the tensions between the pleasures of homecoming and the collective miseries of the pandemic and our current political upheaval. The return home and the enforced isolation of lockdown lend the album a mood of contemplation and immersion in memory. The results are beguiling, from the lush sunshine pop harmonies of first single "I Want My Jacket Back" to the trippy farfisa-driven space-pop of "Lodger" to the gorgeous, Bunnymen-tinged "Palm Sunday."

As always, Jason's songcraft, arranging and production are immaculate, (Quever has been tapped to work with dream pop Luminaries Dean Wareham and Beach House as of late) as evidenced by the elegant chamber-pop of "My Sympathies" and the epic flow of "The Strange Boys", “Hypnotist" and "Remarry" in the album's warbly second half. The mood of longing and recollection is a perfect match for the album's dreamy textures and for the unusual times we're living through. It's a true testament to the resilience of the Papercuts project that after several acclaimed albums, Jason still has much that's new to say, and is continually finding new ways to say it.

Free World is the first full-length issue from an ongoing collaboration between Behavior (Bedros Yeretzian, Evan Burrows, Justin Tenney, Robbie Cody) and Mayako XO (Sara Gernsbacher). It was tracked between 2019 and 2020 and assembled over the course of the last year in Los Angeles. The album reflects its creation under open-ended yet intent circumstances. Combining power pop and street rock with a sour but raw power, Kiss Disease sign with Svart Records!

Kiss Disease’s praised self-titled EP from 2020, together with their fierce performances, sparked a wide interest in the underground circles. Encouraged by the fantastic feedback, the band took a conscious risk and began recording their debut album with no record deal in sight. Soon after hearing about this, Svart Records struck a deal with the band, whose brave blend of power pop, street rock and catchy choruses is only becoming more multifaceted and personal.

Kiss Disease’s debut album, titled You Met Me at a Strange Time, is based on the raw and sour force displayed on the garage punk EP from last year. On the other hand, the band wanted to expand their sound to a grander and more versatile direction. The guidelines were sought from the worlds of power pop and protopunk.

“The core of our album is formed by a strong group effort. The songs were written both together and by everyone on their own, with the whole band having a say on their final form. This time we took influences from a wider spectrum, and it’s precisely this lack of a clear guideline that made us pursue a more emancipated and personal version of our sound”, says the band’s lead guitarist Alex Stöd.

The band’s sound has evolved greatly in the last year. You Met Me at a Strange Time is diverse, fierce, sensitive, and surprising, all at the same time. According to singer/guitarist Ella Laine, an existential transformation of some sort took place amid album’s creation:

“For me personally, this album embodies some sort of turning point between adulthood and the craziness of adolescence, a place where you sit up and take notice of first yourself and then the people around you. Difficult and untold situations are squeezed from between the lines in the lyrics, revealing both everything and absolutely nothing.”

Svart Records announces the debut sound recording by the enigmatic outsider musician and wayward poet Shannon Rowley. Made available officially on April Fools’ Day, Rowley’s black-clad 12-inch epic is titled The King Departs. Shannon Rowley is a writer and a singer, a father, a former sailor, a rather considerate lover, an elephant trainer of late, an emotional disaster, and a one-time preacher who had a short and tragic career as a marine biologist that ended with a bang instead of a whimper – he does not wish to discuss this issue any further. All the dues are paid and he has taken responsibility. Let it go, people. Enough is enough. Rowley has written songs, poems and prose since he was thirteen. At twenty-one he discovered reading and everything changed. His religious career was over, and he began his life as a writer and a sailor. After jumping ship in Portugal, he lived there on a series of odd jobs for a few years and finally settled in Tampere, Finland, where he resides to this day. He has worked with various musicians throughout the years, inc. Pekko Käppi & K: H: H: L, Black Motor, Jouko Hohko, Jukka Orma and Fuzzy Mama. The late great Franklin S. Cupford is his great grandfather from his mother’s side. Rowley has not recorded before. The King Departs is his debut release, which would not have been made without the steaming dedication of one Matti ”Sky Chowder” Salo and the insistence of a certain Zea Zea Flamesguy who simply refused to let it be. After all is said and done, Rowley is rather proud of this record and wishes to address all those involved in the process by giving salute and kind regards. Thank you so much. The first one hundred copies of the vinyl are made available with a complimentary book of short stories and moodpieces by Rowley. Titled Say, Have You Heard Of The Lambs?, the book is gorgeously illustrated by none other than the great Noora Isoeskeli herself. Yes, that Noora Isoeskeli.

Sons of Apollo is an American progressive metal supergroup formed in 2017 and composed of drummer Mike Portnoy, bassist Billy Sheehan, keyboardist Derek Sherinian, vocalist Jeff Scott Soto, and guitarist Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal.‘So there is no doubt that here are musicians who are all among the best on their instruments (and vocals). And on this album they try their hardest to rise above the rest. Great drum parts, bombastic bass solos, impressive guitar parts and fabulous keyboard work. In addition, I count Jeff Scott Soto as one of the best singers for a long time and on this album he once again proves to be on a comparable level with Ronnie James Dio and Geoff Tate.
