The sophomore album from NYC musician and singer-songwriter Kyle Avallone, is a collection of nostalgic meditations that take you out of the smoky bar and into the gray daylight of a seaside town. It is a cinematic dreamscape steeped in warm vocals, lush synthesizers, and sweeping steel guitars. Throughout the ten songs, tender narratives play like home movies on a living room wall, revealing little worlds and distilled memories.

Recorded at Studio G in Brooklyn with Jeff Berner (Psychic TV), Avallone reaches beyond the lo-fi sleaze of his 2020 debut, Last Minute Man, for a higher fidelity and grander sound palette. “After making a record by myself on an old four-track tape machine, it felt like a natural progression to go into a proper studio and play music with my friends". The core band consists of Mark Perro (The Men) on keys and Russell Hymowitz on bass, who both sing backing vocals, along with David Christian on drums. On several tunes, pedal steel played by Jon “Catfish” DeLorme (The Nude Party) dances around Avallone’s baritone voice, delivering a twang that is distinctively more New York than Nashville.

Inspired by the conversational storytelling of artists like Terry Allen and Lou Reed, Avallone was moved to capture the drama and mystery of his own life experiences. The characters we meet here are flawed. Mistakes are made and lies are told. Love is either lost or on the line. Dreams manifold as both echoes of the past and hopes for the future – the faded glow of childhood impressions in “Down the Hill”; the single mothers’ kitchen table reverie in “Going to the Beach”; the lament for summer’s end in “Vacant Sea”.

Centripetal Force is proud to announce the release of New Jerusalem, the latest release from Joseph Allred. Joseph Allred isn’t sure how many albums they have released. It is thought to be in the neighborhood of twenty-two, not counting collaborations, digital only, and split releases. Most of these are rooted in Appalachian folklore, mystic spirituality, a love for guitar soli, and a reverence for Robbie Basho. New Jerusalem is no exception, but with this album Allred has recontextualized these elements and presents them in grand fashion. Sonically, New Jerusalem is a wide ranging and full experience that stands in stark contrast to Allred’s usual delicate minimalism. It’s a large ensemble kind of sound, with Allred composing all of the music and playing all the instruments. There is an almost post-rock feel to New Jerusalem, with nods to Labradford, Current 93, and Dead Can Dance, as well as hints of Hawkwind’s more psychedelic folk/pop/fantasy moments. Allred’s guitar is not at the forefront here. Their affinity for composition and talent on a wide variety of instruments is what’s on display. It’s a bold and jarring shift, one that is certainly more cerebral and reveals additional layers with each listen.

Initially, when conceiving the album in 2021, it was intended to be lighter, melancholic and somewhat danceable while maintaining the basic sonic style and aesthetics of the previous albums. However, the Russian invasion in Ukraine slowed down the work and made serious changes to the general idea of the album. The main theme of the album is the war. There are no specific stories or descriptions of the events of the war. It's more of an abstract and emotional thing. First impressions, moods or emotions experienced during certain events. These kinds of musicians who regenerate and evolve our world by forging new creative languages that future artists will liberally borrow from and build upon. Richmond, Virginia may seem like a surprising location for seismic catalysts, but Hard Copy now joins an elite list of RVA bands moving sound in unexpected and earth shaking directions. Destruction! Invention! Rebirth! Once upon a time there was Honor Role who deconstructed midwest hardcore and carved out a path for what eventually would become mathrock. Combining empathy wrapped in anger, a following generation would use this template to birth post-hardcore and a 2nd wave emotional music. A bit later came Labradford who were atmospheric scientists creating pulsating soundscapes bathed in drone. Their music was so devastatingly unique that Kranky willed themselves into existence to release their debut for which this historic label was built upon and continues to lead the way in experimental music. I can't help but to include Hard Copy among this kind of revelatory innovation. They are subtle shapeshifters of synth driven post-punk. At their core, we find unorthodox art rock for which Talking Heads and Pere Ubu belong, but it is stretched taut like taffy into trance-inducing, long form motorik musings. Singular vocals act as a secondary percussion. Bass lines double as a metronome heartbeat. Guitars zigzag inside a monochromatic prism. Linnear drums hammer the band's abstract narrative into a carefully crafted double-helix staircase spiraling up into ambitious avant-garde territory. Cantankerous poetry minus the Mancunian snarl of Mark E Smith behaves as a modern day deadbeat descendant making good. In short, making very very good. Erik Nervous (aka Erik Hart to his folks) has produced at least an EP a year since 2015, releasing his music on a long list of American indies, such as Warm Ratio, Total Punk, Neck Chop, Lumpy, and Digital Regress. There was a short break for the Covid-19 pandemic, but even then, Erik hooked up with two friends, as the Beta Blockers. Erik also happens to be one of the top punk recording engineers in the Midwest and has been playing synth in the Spits since 2021. Immaturity marks the return of Erik Nervous as a solo artist. The thirty-nine minute long playing rock album will be co-released by FatCat (uk) and Feel It (us) on November 3, 2023. Most of Immaturity was written, as it was recorded, in the basement of Erik’s rural North Eastern Indiana home—the same house he’s lived all his life. The title of the record reflects Erik’s refusal to grow up. Song subjects range from anxiety to astral projection. A big fan of fellow self-taught “outsider” artists, and the DIY ethic, Erik’s sonic armoury contains yellowed plastic Casiotones, Yamaha Portasounds, and a smiling cat-shaped Meowsic keyboard, all purchased from yard sales, Goodwills, and misspelled eBay auctions. These, and a Tyco toy guitar all add to the album’s nostalgic retreat back into a treasured childhood, and its overall irresistible, enthusiasm-packed, perhaps tongue-in-cheek, joyful punch. However, don’t let the self-depreciating playfulness fool you. Erik is totally schooled, and has serious chops.

San Francisco’s jangle-gaze sensation, Seablite, has been mesmerizing audiences from the Golden Gate to Glasgow with their brand of dreamy fuzzed-out bliss and announce the reissue of their long out of print debut album, Grass Stains and Novocaine”on Dandy Boy Records. Seablite formed in 2016 when Lauren Matsui (vocals / guitar) and Galine Tumasyan (vocals / bass) bonded over a mutual appreciation of early 90s Britpop and UK underground music and began writing songs together. Repressed on vinyl and remastered by Mikey Young (Eddy Current Suppression Ring) the album sounds bigger and better than ever. This new version of Grass Stains showcases the band’s noisy beginnings and highlights their love for My Bloody Valentine, Lush, Blur and Ride. The guitars sound more aggressive and textured while the low end is far more present and driving, doing justice to Matt Bullimore’s (ex-Mantles) original mix and allowing a second chance at a first impression.

Pruillip is a new Belgian band founded by Louis Evrard (Bert Dockx Band, Grid Ravage, Ottla) and Annelies Van Dinter (Echo Beatty, Takh & Naga Ghost). The duo started about 2 years ago after a request to play at De Nor, the open air sculpture park and venue of Dennis Tyfus. For this occasion Annelies and Louis decided to do a position switch and play each other's instruments: Annelies beating the hell out of the drums and Louis ripping up the guitar.

Pruillip: the record

Visceral meditation: that's what the self titled debut album of Pruillip is all about. Eight songs channeling elemental emotions, kickin' deep into the internal organs of the body. Low end frequency swagger droning up from Louis Evrard's amp, ready to slip into 'Place All Your Cards', slow burning sludge nugget, bolstered by the steady drum kicks of Annelies Van Dinter, where every note and strike seems to carry the weight of the world. Navigating through life, seducing you with her gloomy voice. Entering a quest into the unknown, a place you don't want to leave. A feeling increased by the abrasive and brutal 'Boterham': a punk sludge anthem for the hungry and the wild at heart, countered with the reverb-shrouded murmur 'Distracted Enthusiasm'. The lonely 'Zonnedauw' sets the mark of an apparently more resigned B-side, stretching the Pruillip universe with primitive, but so addictive, riffs in 'Mirrors', echoing vibes of 90's desert sessions while 'Offload' and the lucid state of Ataraxia seems to drift on raw emotions and a sweaty claustrophobic tension, which would fit perfectly in Wim Wenders Paris Texas movie. A whirlwind of a record, straight to the bone, leaving you flabbergasted and wanting for more.

Tapping into their youthful connection, they created a sound that exudes confidence and curiosity, a homage to the masterful world of YMO’s and Happy End’s Haruomi Hosono, rooted in the trio’s own idiosyncratic experience of the present. Recorded at home and promoted on hugely popular DIY TikTok videos, their debut album Tradition is a technicolour exercise in armchair travelling – a kind of lockdown exotica for the housebound whose nostalgic flights of fancy are laced with a sense of whimsical melancholy for the lost freedoms of youth. Referencing everything from Afro-Cuban percussion to lo-fi beats, Buddhist spirituality to trap, each member of the band brings different musical inspirations to the table. Latin American and Middle Eastern styles sit adjacent to a fascination for the electronic music of Aphex Twin, Dorian Concept, Underworld and Daft Punk. At times, the music verges on acid pop bliss, at others, it grooves with the instrumental funk sensibility of Badbadnotgood. “In the first place, when I create a song, my goal is to transport the listener to a mysterious place,” vocalist Daido explained in a recent magazine interview. Using lyrics as another sonic texture in the composition of ideas, Cho Co Pa paint beguiling sonic postcards of far-flung moods across 12 highly original tracks. Marrying the organic and the electronic on rhythmically sophisticated compositions like ‘Chichibu’ and ‘Watatsumi’, it is on the album’s standout track ‘Gandhara’ that the experimental sound of Cho Co Pa comes to the fore. Referencing the ancient city of Gandhara through which Buddhism made its way from India to China, the track is a vocoder-trap-inspired, Udu drum-driven pop jam that lilts with unmistakable Balearic flair. If that’s difficult to imagine, then know simply that ‘Gandhara’ sounds like nothing else on this side of Saturn. Even Daido seemed surprised by the outcome: “I feel like we were able to create something that exceeded our abilities. That was huge!” Hugely popular in Japan, with festival appearances lined up alongside Badbadnotgood at Asagiri Jam in October, it's safe to say the success of Tradition has taken Cho Co Pa by surprise. Released digitally in July 2023, Tradition will get a full international vinyl release in January 2024. You won’t have heard anything like it.

Record producer and electric bassist Dan Horne returns to his Lone Palm a.k.a. Liberty Hair Farm studio in Echo Park, Los Angeles for the vinyl release of his debut full-length studio album, Count The Clouds. The enigmatic Australian artist and producer, Chet Sounds returns with his sophomore album, Changes Happen To Everyone, Everywhere (out October 27th via Third Eye Stimuli). After his contributions to Sydney’s adored psych-folk outfit The Uplifting Bell End on their albums, Super Giant III and IV, Chet Tucker launched his solo project as Chet Sounds in 2021 with the release of his self-titled debut album, which received international praise from New Commute (usa) and Shindig Magazine (uk). Continuing on his sonic journey, Chet’s sophomore album sees the humble artist honing his craft with some of his most melodic compositions, heartfelt storytelling and tasteful production yet. Harking back to 70’s classic rock, folk and psychedelia, Chet takes us through bygone eras and musical flavours conjured in the same universe as modern DIY artists such as Tex Crick, Traffik Island and Frank Maston. Living between his family home in Kurnell, NSW (just south of Sydney) and with stints out in the Northern Territory where Chet works at an Indigenous Art Centre, the two lifestyles and surroundings are stark contrasts and evoke Chet Sounds’ musical ideas and lyrical subjects. As heard on his debut album, Chet’s songs are often themed around the coming-of-age and facing up to various struggles of life; this rings true again on his sophomore album, as Chet explains; “the compositions express changes happening on a personal level both physical and mental. It also encompasses social and environmental change and how it affects an individual, getting through one day to the next.” Chet Sounds’ second album, Changes Happen To Everyone, Everywhere was recorded during 2021 in a shipping container on his family’s property. Similar to modern composers/producers such as Frank Maston, Chet wrote, performed, recorded and mixed everything on the record, aside from two tracks where his friend, Amber Newel plays violin. The 12 track record continues some of the musical styles heard on his 2021 debut album but features a wider array of instrumentation and more complex arrangements, giving this album a 70s orchestral rock sound. Chet says; “I deliberately tried to create an album that featured a stronger sonic cohesion than my previous as well as improving the quality of production and composition.” Blending vintage coloured recording equipment with intricate melodies, genius arrangements and technical brilliance, Chet Sounds’ forthcoming new album Changes Happen To Everyone, Everywhere will win the hearts of any listeners who celebrate the outsiders and underground geniuses in today’s rock music.
