Think of the one-shot Seattle supergroup Mad Season as the grunge version of sober living. Guitarist Mike McCready, best known as the main six-string slinger in Pearl Jam, met bassist John Baker Saunders while in rehab, and the two paired with Screaming Trees' drummer Barrett Martin and Alice in Chains vocalist Layne Staley, partially in hopes of steering the singer onto the path of the straight and narrow. Ultimately, the plan didn't pan out, but for a brief while, the quartet -- who adopted the name Mad Season -- did have their moment of clarity, captured on the 1995 album Above.

Former wrestling rock'n'roll one man band activist Lightning Beat-Man (1992-1999) turned into a primitive rock'n'roll blues preacher during the millennium change and released countless recordings on several labels. In 2017 he had a hand full of songs to record this album, and the idea was to record it with several musicians and not showing them the songs. They went to the studio and Reverend Beat-Man played the songs on the guitar one time, then the musicians had two takes for recording without rehearsal to keep it fresh. The result is a mix of blues trash, new wave folk and dark no wave garage punk and rock'n'roll. Featuring Nicole Izobel Garcia (vocals, organ, percussion), Mario Batkovic (accordion), Julian Sartorius (drums) and Resli Burri (Dead Brothers multi-instrumentalist).

"Everyone's hoping that nobody sees/all our little efforts at dignity"This last line of the title track from Cindy's fourth LP Why Not Now? works as a slogan for Karina Gill's evolving musical vision. Her music is simple out of necessity and introverted in delivery, but the songs contain vivid worlds and are quietly ambitious. With this latest batch, Gill pulled the process of making Cindy music even more inward. "Some of these songs were first recorded as demos alone in my basement. I think that process set the tone for the record_Maybe it set up a kind of starkness," she says. Moving on from the fixed quartet that performed the first three albums, Gill worked alongside original keyboardist Aaron Diko to develop the songs and they enlisted players from the ever-blossoming SF pop scene to realise her minimalist vision -- members of Flowertown, Telephone Numbers, April Magazine, Famous Mammals, and Sad Eyed Beatniks to name a few. The collective sounds fill out the record perfectly with John Cale-esque viola on 'August', lo-fi fairground organs, and a tasteful full-band sound that crops up throughout. 'A Trumpet on a Hillside' is the most triumphant Cindy has ever sounded, all ascending chords and a wedding march melody tumbling out of an old synth. Still, some of the best moments are Gill alone, as on 'Playboy', just naked guitar and voice, and when the forlorn whistling solo kicks in, it feels like the loneliest star is imploding in a distant galaxy. While the dream-pop tag is probably still relevant, this isn't algorithm-fed genre ambience. Gill's vocal/lyrical presence can be as gently momentous as Leonard Cohen or as intellectually potent as any '79-'80 Rough Trade post-punk. "In writing a song", Gill says, "all the disparate parts of being me momentarily correspond, like car alarms and party music momentarily matching beats." Death Pill, are an all-female hardcore punk power trio of considerable muscle, combining metalcore, punk rock and (like labelmates 'Shooting Daggers') oodles of 'Riot Grrl' vibe. It's significant how many female punk bands are using the stance and attitude of the 'Riot Grrl' movement as a touchstone for what they are about, but it doesn't end there. From the classic punk of Black Flag, The Distillers and Circle Jerks, to modern outfits like Axe Rash and the thrash metal of Nervosa and Exodus, there's a nod to all of this in Death Pill's visceral sound. Full on and fully formed on their self-titled debut album.That aside, what makes this release even more pertinent for us, and the fact that it is happening at all, is that Mariana, Anastasiya and Nataliya are from the Ukraine, who's troubles are well known to all of course. Hard times, but right now there is a real chance to change lives for the better, the victory is still undoubted.So there is hope for sure, and as this album amply demonstrates, plenty of fighting spirit. It's a killer debut.However, producing a 'killer record' under such extraordinary circumstances was a challenge too. Tracking started during Covid and was completed in late 2021, only three tracks were mixed before the war hit. However the band and their production team were able to somehow continue and finished everything including the artwork in 5 months whilst the Russian invasion rolled on. A testament to their drive and single mindedness.Although things are uncertain, the band is still going strong, still together.Death Pill is set for release on the 24th February 2023, perhaps fittingly a year to the day that Russia invaded Ukraine.'Death Pill' will be released on limited edition white with red splatter vinyl housed in a full colour single sleeve with a printed lyric inner. Full download included. There will also be a limited CD version in a 4 panel digipack with a 12 page lyric booklet.

Crystal Clear With Green Mix Colored Vinyl. June McDoom's eponymous debut EP is a collection of songs that collage virtually everything important to her. Growing up in South Florida in a Jamaican household, McDoom was raised around reggae music, which echoed throughout every room of her childhood home. Later, she discovered and nourished her own deep love for folk music and songwriting of the 1960's and 70's. While studying in NYC for a degree in Jazz Performance, her musical palette expanded to include the more intricate influences of jazz and early soul. Realizing that her favorite vintage folk music lacked artists with similar identities as her own, it became increasingly important for McDoom to carve a unique musical space - to push folk music towards a new and different audience. Following the release of her debut single, "The City" - mixed by Gabe Wax (Soccer Mommy, Spoon) - June McDoom was eager to take the reins on the production of her debut EP. Recorded and mixed entirely from home with collaborator Evan Wright, McDoom found herself enthralled with the analog recording process, which began a textural exploration that defines this record. Experimenting with a mixture of vintage analog and modern digital recording, McDoom learned profound new ways to marry the seemingly contrasting genres and style that had individually shaped her. June McDoom's debut EP is steeped in self-discovery, and self-acceptance. Its magic lies in its ability to weave the influences of such seemingly disparate icons as Joan Baez, The Delfonics and Alton Ellis into a new, seamlessly crafted tapestry.

El Palmas Music are back with a third instalment of rare Venezuelan sounds from the 60s and 70s, a wild trip through salsa, boogaloo, garage rock, jazz and delinquent pop. Venezuelan music was moving at such a pace through the 60s and 70s that almost as soon as a new craze was born, another was preparing to eclipse it. In barely 10 years, musicians latched on to the sound of the Latin big bands of Cuba, New York and Colombia, turned to the 60s pop and rock ‘n’ roll of England and the US, before heading back to salsa as it took root across Latin American, before forays into jazz, psych rock and Afro-Venezuelan rhythms took hold in the 70s. This fertile musical period, coming at a time when Venezuela was economically abundant and culturally as relevant as any other developed country, has always been the focus of the Color de Trópico series, and continues to be the case on this third instalment, though it should also be noted that the tracks are getting rarer and rarer, indicative of the curatorship of DJ El Palmas and El Drágon Criollo and their constant search for new sounds that reflect Venezuela’s musical treasures at this time. Color de Trópico Vol. 3 starts with Un, Dos, Tres Y ... Fuera’s “Aquella Noche”, a song that’s fully indicative of Venezuela’s coastline with the much-loved Un, Dos, Tres Y ... Fuera giving a llanero rhythm (normally played on a harp and other stringed instruments in its rural incarnation) a fully Afro-Caribbean makeover with pulsating bass and an electric keyboard that teases and energises the groove. It possesses some of that same mid-70s vitality and need to experiment as Grupo Vaquedanus, the band of sax maestro Santiago Baquedano, and their cover of Dave Brubeck’s “Take Five”, here fashioned as “Toma Cinco”. This version strips away all the niceties of the original, turning it in to a psych-fuzz jazz romp with Baquedano’s raspy sax leading the way. Step back 10 years and the energy remains even if the musical terrain was different. Girl group Los Pájaros hit hard with a boogaloo whose instruction is simple enough: “shake it baby, kiss for you, take the rhythm, and do the boogaloo”. Los Pájaros were one of a number of groups who were taking inspiration from the 60s sounds of the US and Britain but repackaging it for Venezuelan youth. Pop stars Geminis 5 were at it too with a fuzzy ballad “Tus 16 Años”, and Junior Squad even injected a bit of San Francisco hippy charm into affairs with their loose adaptation of The Turtles “She’d Rather Be With Me”, retitled as “Siempre Para Ti” and sounding as rough, ready and full of youthful vim as anything made north of Mexico. On the farthest end of the pop spectrum is The Pets with their cult hit “El Entierro de un hombre rico que murió de hambre” (“The Burial of a Rich Man Who Died of Starvation”), a true countercultural anthem that even dips into “The Funeral March” for a minute, and which is much desired by record collectors. Finally, we must mention the salsa ensembles and their big band predecessors, always an important element of any Color de Trópico compilation. On Volume 3, we find one of the earliest salsa groups in Venezuela, Los Megatones De Lucho, who recorded a pachanga, “Yo Se Que Tu”, long before salsa was even a thing. Influenced by Venezuela’s very own Los Dementes and Joe Cuba’s sextet, Principe Y Su Sexteto were one of Venezuela’s most prominent salsa ensembles. On their 1969 track “San De Manique” we get a different vibe altogether, it’s a creeping son with just vocals, bass and congas for its opening minute, before really kicking into action with a twisted guitar line and wild percussion, while always retaining a raw, Afro-Latin feel. Last, but not least by any means, is one of Venezuela’s most beloved salseros, Johnny Sede, who pipes up with a classic salsa, “Guararé”, showing how the style had developed in just a few short years. You could accuse El Palmas and El Dragón Criollo, the curators of this collection, as getting some sort of a sick thrill at throwing such a weird and unwieldy bunch of tracks together, and that may be true, but there is logic too. These are songs full of life and creativity that signalled an era of boundless optimism. Listen to them now, and you’ll find yourself feeling those emotions once again.

Als The Residents im Jahr 1978 die 33 RPM EP Duck Stab! Im 7" Format veröffentlichten, war das für die Gruppe eine nette Abwechslung von den sich über Jahre (1975 -1979) hinziehenden, anspruchsvollen und experimentellen Aufnahmen an ihrem epochalen Eskimo Album. Außerdem brauchte das Label Ralph Records, eine Einnahmequelle um die lange Phase ohne ein "echtes neues" Album zu überbrücken. Zur allgemeinen Überraschung wurde die EP ein Hit und verkaufte mehr als 50.000 Einheiten in wenigen Monaten. Die Nachfrage liess auch in der Folge nicht nach und so drängte Ralph Records The Residents eine zweite EP - Buster & Glen - aufzunehmen, die dann schlussendlich zusammen mit Duck Stab! als LP-Release zu einem Klassiker und großem Verkaufserfolg wurde. Einige Jahre später, zwischen 1981 und 1988 übernahm Night Flight, eine damals populäre Sendung im US-Kabelfernsehen, Video-Clips von The Residents in ihr reguläres Programm auf - insbesondere "Hello Skinny", das legendäre Video zum Duck Stab! / Buster & Glen Album. Für viele Fans der Band war Night Flight der erste Berührungspunkt mit The Residents. Im Jahr 2016 feierte der Sender unter dem Namen Night Flight plus fröhliche Wiederauferstehung als Internet Streaming-Service und bat The Residents anlässlich des 40ten Jubiläums des Programms um einen Video-Beitrag. Da die Gruppe ohnehin an einer Live-Version von Duck Stab! als Teil ihrer 50ten Jubiläums-Tour im Jahr 2022 arbeitete, bot sich Duck Stab! With their first, self-titled album for Liberty, The Petards from the state of Hessen in Germany had produced a real hit. The year 1969 meant for Klaus and Horst Ebert, Roger Waldmann and Arno Dittrich above all a wealth of appearances; at that time there was
probably no band harder working in Germany than The Petards. In September 1969 producer Sigi Loch called the band back to Munich's Trixi Ton Studio to record the next album. And as one would expect from the band, the musicians came to the studio well prepared. Within five days, enough new songs were recorded to create four singles in addition to the new album. All the titles were written by the two Ebert brothers, who apparently never ran out of ideas. The musicians used whatever kind of tools the studio gave them: synthesizers, Mellotron and piano were skillfully integrated into the Petards sound. As with the previous albums, the band captivated with an enormous amount of variety and talent. Progressive rock, Krautrock - everything was in the Petards songs - and yet with less than four minutes of running time they remained deeply suitable for airplay.
In early 1970 the new album 'Hitshock' was released on Liberty and continued the track of success of the four Hessians. For many people 'Hitshock' is the most mature and best produced album of the four from Schrecksbach. Fans and critics agreed. In April 1970, The Petards made it into the arts pages! Director Charles Lang had selected the band from 70 applicants and invited them to the Bremen Theatre. There they took part in the play 'Was ihr wollt', freely adapted from Shakespeare (’Twelfth Night’, or ’What You Will’). All arrangements were made by the musicians, some titles were rewritten. Unfortunately no recordings have been preserved. The play was not a great success, but The Petards got off well with the critics, and of course this also meant a good promotion for their new album. At least the four musicians had a lot of fun participating, but still they found time to carry the songs from 'Hitshock’ live through the republic. Bear Family releases this album for the first time again in the original artwork on 180 gram vinyl and adds a reproduction of the original poster to 'Hitshock'. This record is the third of four scheduled vinyl re-releases of the great Petards on Bear Family.

First ever reissue of this fabulous DUTCH MINIMAL SYNTH / WAVE album from 1985. Minx / Zimmerman were a duo comprised of Don Minx (Marq van Broekhoven, now a well known comics artist) and Aldomir Zimmerman (Tonnie Eiting), two friends from the city of Eindhoven, who were into comics, avant-garde music and homemade cassette recordings. Influenced by diverse bands / artists such as John Foxx, Brian Eno, Fad Gadget, Sparks or Devo, (among many others), they decided to release an album. “Minx / Zimermman” was the result, self-released on their Freudian Backroom label, now very sought-after by minimal wave collectors.
