When Upset The Rhythm released Normil Hawaiians’ lost album ‘Return Of The Ranters’ back in 2015, the band members got back in touch with each other after a 30 year break and starting playing music together again. Out of this the group played a launch show for the album and followed that up with more concerts, including an appearance at Supernormal, a residency at the Edinburgh Festival, gigs at Cafe OTO and supporting Richard Dawson in London too. They even recently toured Greece in support of having all three of their renowned exploratory post-punk albums finally back in print.

For his animations and videos Andreas Hofer has created an archive with sound fragments, either played or recorded from surroundings. Based on these fragments, Andreas recorded sketch-like songs mostly for himself over a period of years in the early 2000s. Upon re-releasing his first and to this date only solo album "Feuer auf dem Dach der Welt" on Second Thoughts Records, these unreleased sessions have been presented to the label. Together with Andreas we have made a selection of 13 songs from these sessions to be presented as his new album "Tonträger". A walk through a shimmering sounding habitat with hidden musical anecdotes. Stylistically the songs are difficult to classify. They continue the journey of Lo-Fi home recordings, but aesthetically leave the 80s and the drum machine behind for a sound that we could easily credit to 90s Indie music from artists like for example Lou Barlow and many others. Andreas Hofer has designed the covers of all copies with ink drawings, each cover is one of a kind. These covers also initiated the work for two short animated videos to two songs of this LP.

The music of Alex Maas has always mesmerised. Now, on his soul-baring solo debut Luca, the Texan and Black Angels singer's journey is taking an equally hypnotic detour along the wild trails of his indigenous homestead. It’s ok to be afraid, sad and fearful because you need it to appreciate all the beauty the world has to offer.” Like the echoes of nature that Alex grew up around Luca dances like dandelions on a breeze but is spiked with a squint of suspicion as its percussion shimmers like that cautionary rattlesnake. His album crackles with the vintage warmth of Grace Slick or smoky melodies of Nico, rising like a campfire’s embers whilst taking cues from Beth Gibbons, Sam Cooke, Lee Hazlewood, Vashti Bunyan, Mississippi John Hurt, and Huun-Huur-Tu. “I like music that makes me feel like I’m entering a magical place. I’m drawn to those whose voice sounds like it’s coming from the forest,” he says. Recorded at Space Flight Studios in Austin Luca was an evolutionary project with some early songs worked up from their acoustic origins whilst others were written more recently. Co-produced with long-time collaborator Brett Orrison, the record began its transformation from loner folk leanings to a worldlier embrace. Calling upon members of The Black Angels, Wide Spread Panic, Mien, the Sword, Jack White’s band the Eels. Stepping out on his own Maas is walking along his own untrodden path, offering an honest and true account of what has passed and what may yet come. Luca sings from the soul, is believable and could well be everything the world needs right now.

The new album from London-based USA Nails (and 2nd for Hex Records) is a post-punk, noise-rock platter that is as grating as it is catchy. The record was tracked live over 4 days at Bear Bites Horse in London with producer Wayne Adams. Though "Character Stop" still features the pummeling noise-punk that USA Nails have become renowned for, it's balanced with more sober, downbeat moments. On it they explore identity - like the online personas of aggressive twitter users, influencers and vloggers, as well as more introspective takes on mental health, giving up on dreams, the joy (and despair) of being a part-timer, and contemplating who they would be if they decided to hang up their guitars for good. Guitarist Gareth Thomas comments, "For me "Character Stop" is the best album USA Nails have ever made by miles. It's more varied than anything we've ever done before and I think it's stronger for it. Oumou Sangaré releases acoustic album, 'Acoustic', on No Format. Re-imagining her much-praised 2017 release 'Mogoya' totally unplugged, in live sessions recorded over just two days, 'Acoustic' is the final chapter in a trio of related projects, following 2018's 'Mogoya Re-mixed' edition, which saw Sangaré's compositions retooled by high-profile fans including Sampha, Spoek Mathambo and St Germain.'Acoustic' consolidates Sangaré's position as Mali's leading opinion-maker, established with her 250,000-selling 1989 debut Moussolou, which did much for the feminist cause in West Africa. Oumou's capacity to confront suffering whilst preserving her connection to Malian values is reflected in two additional tracks added to 'Acoustic'. 'Saa Magni', which laments the passing of Amadou Ba Guindo (member of the Orchestre National Badema), and 'Diaraby Nene' (lifted from Mous-solou) in which Sangaré's lyrics dared to detail her first physical encounters.The release of 'Mogoya' in 2017 signalled the return of Oumou Sangaré after 8 years, during which she had been managing her numerous businesses (including agriculture & pisciculture). With that album, the woman who'd swapped selling water on the streets of Bamako for global stardom reconnected with her audience. Balancing the traditional music of Wassoulou and a forwards-facing curiosity, Malian instruments were augmented by electric guitar, bass and synths, with Tony Allen on drums. Oumou was painted by Congolese artist JP Mika for the front cover, and more recently sampled by Beyoncé (who used 'Diaraby Nene' without permission on 'mood 4 Eva'). Never before had Sangaré appeared so far removed from her home country - it's a dynamic that 'Acoustic' redresses, with Oumou embodying the same freedom & audacity of her debut, 30 years ago. It's the fighter, the undefeated rebel that you find here on this snapshot of an album.

The film chronicles the Jimi Hendrix Experience's storied visit to Maui, their performance on the dormant lower crater of Haleakala volcano on the island and how the band became ensnared with the ill-fated Rainbow Bridge movie produced by their controversial manager Michael Jeffery. Directed by John McDermott and produced by Janie Hendrix, George Scott and McDermott, the documentary incorporates never before released original footage and new interviews with firsthand participants and key players such as Billy Cox, Eddie Kramer, Warner Bros. Executives and several Rainbow Bridge cast members, as well as it's director Chuck Wein. The Blu-ray will include the full documentary as well as the 16mm color film shot of the two afternoon performances captured on July 30, 1970 mixed in both stereo and 5.1 surround sound. Also included in the package will be Live In Maui - both of the aforementioned sets spread across 2 CDs, newly restored and mixed by longtime Jimi Hendrix engineer Eddie Kramer, and mastered by Bernie Grundman. BIG RIG was a very short lived project from Jesse Michaels (operation IVY, Common Rider, Classics OF Love), Doug Sangalang (screw 32, Limp, ONE Time Angels), Kevin Cross (the Nerve Agents, Pitch Black), Jeremy Goody (Pitch Black) and Brandon Riggen. The band rose and fell in 1993. They played a single show and left behind a demo and this EP which was originally on Lookout Records in 1994. 1-2-3-4 Go is extremely proud to be able to reissue this EP. This is a vastly under appreciated piece of East Bay punk and a hidden gem of the Lookout catalog. Includes a faithful reproduction of the original 8-panel booklet/sleeve.

Recumbent Speech, Ezra Feinberg's (ex-Citay) second album, opens with a lament. Named for the Robert Frost poem, “Acquainted with the Night” was written under the cloud of one of the many devastating spectacles of injustice under our current regime. Repeating flutes and synths beam out of a low-end darkness, reflecting our collective sense of loss and alienation. Rising slowly, thickening with guitars and strings, “Acquainted with the Night” lifts off, and so too does the album from there. The second track, “Letter to my Mind,'' features the dynamic interplay of Feinberg's guitar with the loose and playful drumming of Tortoise's John Mcentire, both pushing and pulling atop a looping bass figure. "Palms Up" begins with a lockstep pulse recalling early Terry Riley before jumping into an Ashra-like jam with Afrobeat accents. Side B opens with "Ovation," a tryptic with McEntire on drums which sets a wide lens onto a sweeping landscape, with soaring flutes, wordless vocals, and a hypnotic bassline played on a humming fretless that recalls classic ECM jazz-fusion. The piece plunges into an ambient, interior space before reemerging with a guitar solo fried through an old Space Echo effects processor. The album's title-track finale, "Recumbent Speech," features the magical pedal steel of Chuck Johnson. Unwinding atop a bright analog synth pattern, Feinberg stretches textures of moog and acoustic guitar around Johnson’s lyrical steel, a nod to Cluster & Eno. The piece invokes the need to search deep within—ourselves and our communities—to combat overwhelming strains of darkness with a measure of hope.

From Johnny Thunders’ personal tape archive, this recording is among hundreds of live, studio and writing session tapes he stored away for safe keeping in a box simply labeled “Thunders Tapes”. Cleaned up and mastered, the attempt is to reveal the recordings Thunders felt worthy of keeping and to release only the best audio quality and performances that live up to his musical legacy. In this debut release, Live From Zurich ’85, one hears Thunders and his band performing at a Swiss radio station in 1985. Spectacular sound. Great set.

This year marks almost 20 years since Shawn Foree has been making music under the alias Digital Leather. Yet even with releasing numerous albums and working with some well-known artists during this time, Digital Leather has clung to obscurity. The project, which began in Arizona with Foree and his childhood friend, Ryan Rousseau (Destruction Unit), was initially just an experiment, a toying around with some dusty synthesizers, the Cold Wave aesthetic, and a subversive disregard for audio clarity. Rousseau left early on to pursue other music, but Foree never stopped, and his writing game kept growing stronger. With New Wave Gold, Foree has shown creative maturity, and has proven himself to be a master songsmith as well as a competent producer with a penchant for sound texturing and a “mid-fi” aesthetic. Recorded in Foree’s apartment in Nebraska over the last couple of years, during which time Shawn also traveled the country doing environmental work, New Wave Gold is its own genre; something uniquely wonderful. Lyrically, each song is crafted of deceivingly simple lines, but the words soon reveal their true identities: culprits to a dazzlingly moody manifesto. It’s a mid-life crisis and a global crisis smashed together and thrown onto tape. Scattered with analog synths, acoustic guitars, and a fully operational DIY approach, New Wave Gold is also reminiscent of work from groups like Sebadoh and Psychic TV. References aside, New Wave Gold is a trenchant exploration of a self, coexisting with an often bleak and doubt-inspiring outer setting. It is the battle of the subject versus the all-consuming, fiery leviathan, the object, the world.

When Mark E Smith died in January 2018, an era ended with him. The Fall were an English post-punk band, formed in 1976 in Prestwich, Greater Manchester. They underwent many line up changes, with vocalist and founder Smith as the only constant member. First associated with the late 1970s punk movement, the Fall's music underwent numerous stylistic changes, often concurrently with changes in the group's lineup. Nonetheless, their music has generally been characterised by an abrasive, repetitive guitar-driven sound, tense bass and drum rhythms, and Smith's caustic lyrics, described by critic Simon Reynolds as "a kind of Northern English magic realism that mixed industrial grime with the unearthly and uncanny, voiced through a unique, one-note delivery somewhere between amphetamine-spiked rant and alcohol-addled yarn." Live recording of legendary band THE Fall performing at TJ's, Newport in 2001!

“These days, good news is hard to come by, but here’s some: Lamps, LA’s notoriously unprolific noise-merchant trio, are ready to release their spectacular fourth album called People With Faces, out on In The Red Records. Produced by Ty Segall at Val’s, Lamps’ first recorded output since 2012’s landmark LP Under The Water, Under The Ground finds them breaking adventurous new terrain. I’d say they’ve matured, but I’d only say it behind their backs. Originally self-released in 2017, extreme progressive metallers VINTERSEA's “The Gravity of Fall” was hailed by No Clean Singing as “dynamic and genre-bending!” The album – which has never been offered on vinyl until now – was recorded by Justin Phelps (The Mars Volta, Joe Satriani) and mixed by Evan Sammons (Last Chance To Reason). As a special added bonus, the 2LP pressing of “The Gravity of Fall” will also include VINTERSEA's five-track debut EP 'Constellations' which was originally released in 2014 when the band was known as Asterion.
