The debut, self-titled release from New York City’s Quicksand came out in 1990 and is the 18th release from Revelation Records. It includes four songs including an instrumental entitled “Hypno Jam With Dan”. Frontman/ guitarist Walter Schreifels, the main creative force behind Gorilla Biscuits and bassist for Youth OF Today, assembled the band’s lineup from his dissolved project called Moondog. Guitarist Tom Capone had founded Long Island’s Beyond, and had previously played in Bold, writing their album Looking Back. Drummer Alan Cage had been in Burn and played with Capone in Beyond. Bassist Sergio Vega arrived from the short-lived Collapse and a later incarnation of Absolution.

I discovered Natalie Sweet from Lord Rutledge at Faster & Louder. He had my 1st LP “Extra Credit” #3 on his 2019 Best of. Right behind...Natalie Sweet and Pale Lips. I loved Natalie’s 1st LP and when she posted online about wanting to collaborate with different people I jumped at the chance. I’ve always wanted to collaborate with someone outside the usual crew and it was a great chance to do so. Natalie sent me her idea for “Second Time” just her singing the song on her phone and I thought even in it’s primitive state that it had a great hook and she had something there. We collaborated on that one with me adding some lyrics and a bridge. At this time I had recently started writing “Over My Head” and presented it to Natalie who did a great job coming up with a female point of view in the song and adding lyrics that really helped the song tell a story and pushed it forward. I’m very excited about this release- it was a blast creating these songs with Natalie and bringing them to life with two old buddys Craig Sala on drums and Kris Rodgers on keys! The two tracks were expertley mixed by Mike Kennerty ( All American Rejects, Screeching Weasel) and mastered by Justin Perkins. You don’t have to be a genius to figure out what kind of sonic wares a dude who goes by Egg Idiot is peddling. But that doesn’t mean this gooey Leipzig freak is a one-note act. Over the 16 tracks that make up this debut LP—composed of re-recordings of songs from earlier cassettes—you’ll be taken on quite the lo-fi journey. Yes, you can expect plenty of squiggly power-poppin egg punk in the vein of Cherry Cheeks or Billiam, but you’ll also come across some denser polyrhythmic numbers not too far from something off an early Uranium Club release, a couple of slacker rock jams, what sounds like a contemporary take on ‘90s cassette punk, and even some stuff that borders on oddball industrial. This maybe isn’t a record for the easily annoyed. But you gotta imagine a dude dressed as a giant egg wouldn’t have it any other way. (Alex Howell)

You probably forgot about Rouge. That’s understandable. It’s been two long years since these Berlin punks dropped their debut cassette. But the folks who were paying attention knew better. There was enough promise in that 2022 release to suggest they had more up their sleeve, and it was clearly just a matter of time before they were ready to share it. Well, that time has come. Once again they’re teaming up with Phantom Records, this time making things official with their first vinyl release. They’ve seemingly spent these last couple of years honing their craft--across the eight tracks on this release, they sound much more confident, bolstered by a production that’s a little more polished, though not necessarily slick. Still, they manage to make this a distinctly Rouge-ish affair, mixing the frenetic pre-hardcore punk of the Bags with the drippy garage of Thee Oh Sees and a heaping helping of contemporary Aussie-styled, po-faced post-punk/new wave and anchored by excellent guitar work and an energetic vocal performance. In 1990, Judge had a new song entitled “Forget This Time” and there was a desire to record it and get it out into the wild. Additionally, the band had been touring and made some improvements to some of their existing songs; one standout was “The Storm,” which now had a breakdown in the middle that didn’t exist in the previous versions. Mike was excited about covering “When The Levee Breaks” (which was a bonus track on the Cdep, now a streaming bonus track) and the idea of his local buddy Todd Schwartz doing the harmonica solo. With these three songs the guys headed to Don Fury’s studio on Spring Street to record what became “The Storm” EP. One day Mike showed up on his Harley and the idea came about to run a microphone cable out into the street to record it rev, which you can hear on this version of “The Storm.”

These four songs, recorded in 1977, are the only recordings of the original 4-piece line-up of the Australian band X featuring Ian Rilen (Rose Tatoo), Steve Lucas, Ian Krahe, and Steve Cafiero. Three of the songs (Home is Where the Floor Is, TV Cabaret Rules, and Hate City) were released on the 1985 compilation "Why March When You Can Riot" while Good On Ya Baby was later re-recorded for the X-Aspirations LP. While their debut LP, X-Aspirations, is rightly lauded as an Australian punk classic, this batch of songs is often overlooked because they never received a wide release. This is the band at their most snotty and rambunctious. This is an authorized one-time press of 500 copies on black vinyl by Dirt Cult and Green Noise Records

From the furnaces of Stoke-On-Trent comes the super-limited debut EP from Formal Sppeedwear, a wonky new wave teacup ready to be sipped.

Taking creative cues from Brian Eno’s Oblique Strategies and Conny Plank’s experimental recording techniques to flesh out synthpop-oriented melodies, the EP stomps along with Scary Monsters-era Bowie guitar lines, early 80s Numan basslines and surreal lyrics - “Ready, set on my mark: Tesco Extra, Marks and Sparks” cries Clewlow on 6 Lofty Ash. There’s a versatility to the tracks; with the jolting staccato of The Line counter punched by EP closer and highlight Dismount’s soaring synth slow burn.

Defying the seas of young musicians moving to London and Manchester to find their path, Beck Clewlow (Bass, Vocals, Synthesisers) Charlie Ball (Guitar, synthesisers), and Connor Wells (Drums, Guitar, Synthesisers) stuck it out in Stoke, using the city as a blank canvas - devoting their spare time to writing and experimenting, building their own studio out of charity shop finds and cash-converter synths and recording equipment.

Out in the creative wilderness of Staffordshire there’s a healthy DIY scene brewing with bands waiting to make their mark; fly posting their own shows, making one-off merch for each gig, sharing lineups with one another. “There is no sense of geographical confinement here, there’s a wealth of talent who act indifferently to their surroundings. It’s particularly nice that some of our friends from here are starting to receive attention from elsewhere” say the band. As fellow locals University and Christian Music start to garner attention from the rest of the UK, it’s time for Formal Sppeedwear to follow suit.

Stoke-on-Trent might not be the first place you’d look to find your favourite new band - The Bootleg Beatles are one of its finest exports if you ask Google - but Formal Sppeedwear are here to show you the kilns are alright.

Working on a new album and also taking care of some reissues, sadly Melanie Safka paased away in january 2024. This first release from the remastered catalogue campaign on Melanie's own revitalised Neighbourhood Records label (via UKs Easy Action) features the song recently used on the cult TV show Black Mirror, backed with an unreleased version of the 60s hit 'Bo Bo's Party'. This year Shindig Magazine did a 3-page feature on Melanie as more and more people start to ask who is she? The 7" is limited to 350 Colored Vinyl copies and comes in a spined picture sleeve. Melanie landed in the New York City music and radio scene in the late 1960's. Her first single Beautiful People immediately became a turntable hit. Her first tour began with an impressive 40-day run of shows at Paris' world-famous L'Olympia Theater at the personal invitation of Bruno Coquatrix. In the years to come she would entertain millions: at An Aquarian Exposition (the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival), at Carnegie Hall, and the Isle of Wight and Glastonbury music festivals, The Sydney Opera House, the South Korean DMZ, the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, the Royal Albert Hall, and other Venues around the globe. Melanie launched Neighborhood Records, making her the first American woman to open a mainstream record label. She recorded over 20 chart hits. Melanie received an Emmy after composing lyrics for the theme song of the hit television series Beauty and the Beast. "What Have They Done to My Song Ma" was re-recorded by Ray Charles with the Count Basie Band. Nina Simone delivered a remarkable rendition, as well. "(Lay Down) Candles in the Rain" was re-recorded by Mott the Hoople on their 1971 album Wildlife. Meredith Brooks and Queen Latifah later re-recorded the anthem. "Some Say (I Got Devil)" was re-recorded by Smith's frontman Morrissey. Melanie has always known her calling in life was to entertain. Audiences have welcomed her to the stage for more than fifty years, and she hadccontinued to perform live.
