Fredlös came together in the Spring of 2021, rising from the ashes of previous musical adventures, based in the country around Nortallje, northeast of Stockholm. If credibility were currency, Fake Names’ wealth would be off the charts. We never saw that coming!” , Baker explains. For Expendables the band enlisted producer Adam “Atom” Greenspan (idles, Yeah Yeah Yeahs). Baker explains, “The pop influences are a little more out front on this one and the production really helps it shine. It sounds more direct, more urgent.” Expendables is the latest exchange in a musical conversation that spans four decades. Baker aptly refers to the lineup of Fake Names as a “mutual admiration society” and says that once the five members got in the same room together, it felt as if they had already been in the band together for years.

Albinö Rhino are a psychedelic doom rock trio from Helsinki, Finland. The band has released 2 albums & various EPs over the years. They recorded this amazing hand numbered 35min continuous piece after jamming it at the practice room mostly improvised for years, in between the heavier pieces that Albinö Rhino is known for and jumped to the studio when the arrangement felt right. One of the parts is written just one day before entering the beautiful Suomenlinnan Studio with the talented sound wizard Ilari Larjosto. The album was recorded live in one day with some additional overdubs recorded later at Helsinki Music Studio, where the album was also mixed. The opus was mastered at Virtalähde Mastering. As a photographer, visual artist and member of the cosmic brain-bending trio Devin Gary & Ross, Ross Goldstein has built a layered catalog of softly psychedelic artistic output, but none has been as personal as the sonic spiderweb of his second solo album Inverted Jenny. The last time Ross showed up solo was in 2007 on the quietly-released Trail Songs, a collection of more Americana-leaning songcraft. A decade later, he picks up on threads started on his debut, but continues in a far more inward direction, blurring deftly arranged instrumental backdrops with patient, bucolic songwriting for a discreetly epic modern classic in headphone music. Ross travels through a glowing internal world with these songs, observing moments of both stillness and the sublime from a distance. There's a sheen of loneliness that runs throughout, but never a bitterness. The record opens with a trifecta of Van Dyke Parks-tinged open road songs, but even in the joyful discovery of these songs there's the sense that they're viewed from a loner's perspective. This feeling only grows as things shift from roadside distractions to the plush instrumentals and gentle vibes that make up the record's second half. Gorgeous arrangements set up a playful conversation between warm synths, stoned guitar leads, meticulously placed touches of chamber pop orchestration, and even sounds of the natural world from Ross' own field recordings, always buzzing with life. By the end of the album we've walked alongside for a while, watching the songs navigate their lonesome internal landscape like a late night wearing blissfully into morning. At the end of this night (and every other night, really) there's no answer to be found, no great revelation besides wandering along into another beautiful morning.

If naming is a form of claiming, of being claimed, how is one tethered to both the physical landscape that surrounds us, as well as our own internal emotional landscape_at times calm, at times turbulent, and ever changing? H.C. McEntire's new album Every Acre grapples with those themes_themes that encompass grief, loss, and links to land and loved ones. And naming_claiming land, claiming self, being claimed by ancestry and heritage_permeates the hauntingly beautiful landscape that is this poignant collection of songs. The songs straddle the line between music and poetry. In "New View," McEntire cites poets "Day, Ada, and Laux, Berry, and Olds"_fixtures in the world of writing, whose works are beacons of light over bleak horizons. The beginning of the song is backed by soft guitar plucks that fall on the downbeat and spangle like stars, and, throughout, guitar, bass, and drums swell together gently, mimicking ebbing and flowing tides under the moon. McEntire's voice (at once tender and fierce) intones the truth of both giving and taking, releasing and claiming: "Bend me, break me, split me right in two. Mend me, make me_I'll take more of you." Permeated by heartbeat-like drums, "Shadows" develops quiet ruminations on surrender and loss_reminiscing, moving on. This ponderous, dreamlike song asks the question of how "to make room." How does one make room, for self and for renewal and surrender, when it is so difficult to leave what you know behind? Playing with slivers of descending chromatics, along with the occasional downward-stepping bass, here McEntire yearns for home, and for nesting. Perhaps one of the more grief-stricken songs, "Rows of Clover" is a lamentation, one that touches on the loss of a "steadfast hound." The lone piano in the beginning of the song is rhythmically hymn-like. The stark verse arrangement gradually leads to a chorus that reads like a moody exhale, swollen with lush guitar strums and a Bill Withers-esque understated soul groove. But what stands out the most is an image of being "down on your knees, clawing at the garden"_the only explicit mention of a person in the song. "It ain't the easy kind of healing," sings McEntire, seemingly from further and further away as her voice echoes; and healing ta;kes time, time takes time_truths that linger painfully. "Dovetail" is a song that tells of various women. The song moves back and forth between solo piano and the addition of bass and drums under vocals. McEntire's gentle, trembling vibrato_harmonized in thirds in a celebratory manner_calls to mind a rejoicing psalm and shines through these images, leaving the listener cuttingly fraught with emotions_such as wonder, sadness, nostalgia_that can only arise with these juxtapositions. Gracious (and graceful) with its lilting melodies and lush harmonies, Every Acre ex - plores the acres of our physical and emotional homes. These songs are reaching for the kind of home that we all seek: one where we can rest and lay down (or tuck away) our burdens of loss. And maybe, moving through every acre of a world that often tries to tear our sense of identity and heritage down, McEntire sheds light on what it is to be human in this life_both stingy and gracious, both hurtful and kind.

Ron Sexsmith is one of Canada"s most accomplished singer-songwriters. Born and bred in St Catherine"s near Niagara Falls and currently resident in Stratford, Ontario, he has released 16 albums to date. He has collaborated with the likes of Daniel Lanois, Mitchell Froom, Ane Brun, Tchad Blake, and Bob Rock. Film-maker Doug Arrowsmith made an acclaimed documentary about Ron in 2010 called "Love Shines". In 2017 Ron published his first book, a fairy tale entitled "Deer Life". With one exception, these new songs all flowed from Sexsmith"s fertile musical and lyrical imagination in a short period of 2021 during covid. "The songs came out of nowhere," Ron explains. "I wasn"t really writing after the [2020] release of my previous album, Hermitage. The older I get, the more I think "maybe this is it," but then I found myself with new ideas again and got excited."

"Trench of Loneliness" is the fourth album of Iterum Nata - a psychedelic folk-rock project by Finnish multi-instrumentalist Jesse Heikkinen. While the music is occasionally upbeat, the general atmosphere has more in common with neo-folk than Jesse's former band: Hexvessel, for whom he played lead guitar for five years. Godflesh are an English industrial metal band from Birmingham, England. The group formed in 1982 under the title Fall of Because but did not release any complete music until 1988 when Justin Broadrick (guitar, vocals and programming) and G. C. Green (bass) renamed the band and decided to use a drum machine for percussion. Melding heavy metal with industrial music and later with electronic music and dub, Godflesh's sound is widely regarded as a foundational influence on other industrial metal and post-metal acts and as significant to both experimental and extreme metal.

Demonstrated over eight tracks, the all encompassing, musical odyssey, 'like i need tension' features initial single 'willpower'; which burst across our radar with lashings of personality, and became the introduction to the now familiar Indie outfit. Next up was the punchy and fearless 'around my neck' and last but by no means least came the intriguing, alluring 'whisper', the calm before the sophomore album storm. Gifted with a further five previously unheard gems, listeners certainly have plenty to sink their teeth into. With focus track 'crucial spring' traversing the spectrums of shadow, the progressive and percussive 'unchained will', the slow voluminous ballad 'ocean flows' and the infectious, chaotic energy of 'tiny perspectives' and 'mazes of gazes'. Oozing with iridescence, flavour and texture, there's something to suit all manners of music fans. Completed over a span of two years plus a two week post-lockdown writing and recording stint, it was then that like i need tension truly came to life in a small converted barn near the village of Montaldo Bormida, in northern Italy. "It was a totally collaborative process... All the composing was done together, right there in the room." and thus, like i need tension was born. "Tension is a powerful force. It drives things forwards, its friction producing interesting and unexpected results. Above all, it fuels creativity, inspiring and focusing in equal measure.". Fvnerals have created an album that turns the emptiness of the void and the depth of the abyss into sound with their third full-length "Let the Earth Be Silent". The duo gives sonic shape to the silence of extinction that humankind brings to all life on earth and itself. Depression, isolation, and existential despair ooze out of every note. Fvnerals came into being when singer and bass player Tiffany Ström met guitarist and songwriter Syd Scarlet in the southern English seaside resort Brighton in 2013. Their joining of creative forces resulted in the formation of a dark doom act that also reaches out to and draws from ambient, drone, and a pinch of post-rock to complement what constitutes a particularly sinister and heavy sound. Fvnerals' first sign of life was the self-released EP "The Hours" (2013), which was soon followed by the debut full-length "The Light" in the summer of 2014 and a first UK tour. In 2015, Fvnerals returned with the second EP "The Path" and relocated to Glasgow, Scotland where they started working on their sophomore album. When "Wounds" hit the scene in 2016, it sparked relentless live activities across Europe in each following year until the pandemic shut everything down. Compared to previous records, Fvnerals have taken an even less optimistic approach to songwriting on "Let the Earth Be Silent". This also means that their third album is an artistic gift of beautiful darkness.

Yesterday's Ring is an acoustic-oriented offshoot of the Quebec-based punk band the Sainte Catherines, though despite their country influences and reduced volume level they still kick up the dust with the same passion and fury as their amped-up alter ego, though with a emotional core that's both tough and tender. Guitarist Frederic Jacques and vocalist Hugo Mudie are longtime friends who formed the Sainte Catherines in 1999. The band developed a reputation in both Canada and the United States through extensive touring, and it was during a day off in Memphis, TN, on a 2001 road trip that Jacques and Mudie sat down with a case of beer and began working up some country-style ballads to pass the time. After coming up with a half-dozen songs, Jacques and Mudie liked the tunes enough that they decided to record them, and with some help from Louis Valiquette (of Roller Starter and Akiata) on guitar and vocals, Yesterday's Ring released a split CD with ska-punk upstarts the Couch Addiction only a few months later. The disc received enthusiastic reviews and Yesterday's Ring began playing out regularly in the Montreal area, expanding to a four-piece with the addition of Marc-André Beaudet (who also played in the Sainte Catherines as well as Rollerskater). In 2003, Yesterday's Ring began work on their first album all their own, 11 Chansons Pour Faire Pleurer les Morts-Vivants, with a studio lineup that added piano, violin, and percussion to the foursome's guitars and voices. The album was another success across Canada, and the band eventually expanded to a septet, with Rich Bouthillier on drums, Pablo Boerr on bass, and Ryan Batistuzzi on slide guitar, and Malcolm Bauld replacing Beaudet and adding keyboards, harmonica, and accordion to his duties as guitarist. A second full album, El Rancho, was released in 2005 with tqo more albums to follow until 2010. In 2014 and now again in 2022 the stoty continues.

This mutual ambivalent (un-) knowledge creates an unrepeatable situation of intimate distrust. They interact vigilantly, very close to one another, neither artist able to escape. Compact tension crosses the album and the friction of its content takes them to irrepressible eruptions. In doing so, their interplay becomes arid. Lepok drags us with them until we are irremediably buried.

Defining such complex musicians and their scene seemed very difficult to us. A closer point of view may be warmer and more precise. Because of that, we asked two relevant personalities of this milieu to help us: journalist Antton Iturbe and musician Ibonrg, who kindly agreed to shed some light on the subject.

Oakland band Blues Lawyer joins Dark Entries for their third full-length, All in Good Time, a record of pop-rock songs about living in a world that wants to put your existence on the clock. Blues Lawyer was formed in 2017 as an outlet for guitarist/vocalist Rob I. Miller and drummer Elyse Schrock to write pop songs outside of the strictures of their other groups. Following 2018’s Guess Work and 2019’s Something Different, Blues Lawyer had “graduated from being a side project band, a sort of throwaway project, to actually being a legitimate band,” according to Miller. Under the backdrop of global pandemic and existential crisis, they set about recording their new record. Says Miller, “I have always been really attracted to the way we measure time, especially in relationship to our concepts of what we are supposed to have achieved. There’s a lot of different moments on the record where we’re interrogating this whole value system that comes along with it—determining my worth because of where I’m at in my life in relation to my age, in my love life, in my career.” All in Good Time finds Blues Lawyer moving away from the Flying Nun-influenced jangle pop of their earlier work towards a 90’s alternative rock sound imbued with melancholy of the Lemonheads and Teenage Fanclub. Miller and Schrock agree that this is their first record approached with intentionality, each member having spent their time in pandemic-enforced isolation, honing their songcraft and penning sharp hooks. With the addition of bassist Alejandra Alcala and guitarist Ellen Matthews, Blues Lawyer has become more unabashedly riff-centric, bringing a controlled wildness to the new songs, as evidenced by Matthews’ single-take guitar solo on album closer “Tangled Mess”. This is also the first record on which Schrock and Miller share songwriting duties, with Schrock’s earnest contributions balancing out Miller’s more sardonic approach. Schrock’s optimism particularly shines on the Heavenly-esque “Late Bloomer” as she sings “A late bloom is worth the wait.”. All in Good Time reveals Blues Lawyer as a band ready to stake a meaningful claim in a world that rewards insincerity. The vinyl record includes an insert with liner notes and lyrics.

Bobbie Lovesong is the alias of American recording artist Madelyn Strutz. “On The Wind” is the debut full length from Bobbie, who produced, performed, recorded, and mixed the album herself in Taos, New Mexico. The album is a collection of psych-pop oddities and fizzy space age interpretations of jazz standards that are informed in equal parts by Larry Heard’s breezy dream sceneries, LSD blotted Americana and kaleidoscopic 60’s pop. Bobbie went to Taos, New Mexico in 2020 to live communally with a small group of musicians as the lockdown stretched on for months. Retreating into an unfinished Earthship, Bobbie passed the days writing and recording music, with nothing more than a laptop microphone and a few instruments. At once surreal, timeless and extraterrestrial, “On The Wind” can be heard as a hallucinatory sonic love letter to Taos.

Between the ages of 2 and 18, Cora Gilroy-Ware lived in a haunted place. On the outside, this small edge of Connecticut coastline was a quintessential New England town. Yet beneath its quaint surface was a netherworld that got steadily darker over the course of those sixteen years. From a serious drug problem to environmental pollution leading to deadly illnesses, frequent suicides and an above average number of fatal accidents, something about this place was cursed. Amid this world Cora was an outsider, someone who preferred pop and RnB to the music of her peers, who mostly subscribed to the dregs of a Deadhead culture that was more nihilistic than utopian. Still, she found herself on weekends drinking in the woods with the rest of them, playing along until it was time to leave. Christmas breaks and summer months were spent across the Atlantic in a completely antithetical environment. In London, the city of her birth, Cora spent her teen years taking the bus home at dawn after raves under the railroad arches, or riding the tube to her cousin's house in Camden. For a long time, Cora's life was composed of these two strands_ghostly East Coast suburbia and inner-city London_which she was forced to fold in and out of one another like a two-strand French braid. She quickly learned to adapt and be whoever the particular moment demanded. Her outsider status was intensified by the fact that, being of mixed Afro-Caribbean and European descent, her family didn't look like the others in Connecticut. In the 2000s, this meant Cora had to contend with a deeply ingrained kind of folk-racism, both conscious and unconsciously expressed. Nobody talked about these things back then, and she internalized a lot of shame. The ability to shape-shift became integral to Cora's artistic practice.
