Originally released on CD in 1999, M. Ward's debut is a sparse, mostly live affair recorded with pal and engineer Adam Selzer of Norfolk & Western at Type Foundry Studio in Portland, OR. Listeners who are already accustomed to Ward\'s breathy, conversational vocal delivery and soft-picked, West Coast Americana melodies will find much to love here. Duet for Guitars #2 is peppered with instrumentals in the John Fahey and Bad Timing-era Jim O\'Rourke vein, and Ward\'s lackadaisical picking sounds just as lazily precise here as it does on future recordings. There\'s a real warmth to the sessions that transcends the often bare-bones production. For the most part, it sound like most takes were done live with two microphones, with the occasional overdub, and that style suits Ward\'s dreamy tales of molasses-slow teenage summers (\Beautiful Car\") and oddball parables like ""Fishing Boat Song."" It's also interesting to hear him shedding the inflections of some of his more obvious heroes like Neil Young (""Who May Be Lazy"") and Bob Dylan (""It Won\'t Happen Twice""). This limited edition is an indie record store exclusive and pressed on clear vinyl!"

Canadian composer Scott Morgan’s 12th long-player as loscil takes its title from an influential series of early 20th century photographs by Alfred Stieglitz, abstracting clouds into miasmic, painterly canvases of smoke and shadowplay. It’s a deeply fitting analog for Morgan’s own musical process across the past two decades, fraying forms and tones into widescreen mirages of opaque texture and negative space. The name Equivalents referred to Stieglitz’s notion of the photographs as being equivalent to his “philosophical or emotional states of mind;” the same could be said of these eight weighty, shivering chiaroscuros of sound. Each piece unfolds and evolves enigmatically, adrift in low oxygen atmospheres, shifting dramatically from pockets of density to dissipated streaks of moonlit vapor.
The entirety of the record was created specifically for the album with the exception of “Equivalent 7,” which began as a dance score for frequent collaborator Vanessa Goodman. The album version of this track was reworked with Vancouver musician Amir Abbey aka Secret Pyramid. Cloud photographs taken by Scott Morgan at various locations throughout Cascadia in 2018.

Chelsea Wolfe has always been a conduit for a powerful energy, and while she has demonstrated a capacity to channel that somber beauty into a variety of forms, her gift as a songwriter is never more apparent than when she strips her songs down to a few key components. As a result, her solemn majesty and ominous elegance are more potent than ever on Birth of Violence. There is a core element to Chelsea Wolfe’s music—a kind of urgent spin on America’s desolation blues—that’s existed throughout the entirety of her career. Her latest album, Birth of Violence, is a return to the reclusive nature of her earlier recordings. The songs stem from humble beginnings little more than Wolfe’s voice and her Taylor acoustic guitar. Her longtime musical collaborator Ben Chisholm recorded the songs on a makeshift studio and helped fill them out with his modern production treatments and the occasional auxiliary flourish from ongoing contributors Jess Gowrie (drums) and Ezra Buchla (viola). “These songs came to me in a whirlwind and I knew I needed to record them soon, and also really needed a break from the road,” Wolfe says. “I’ve spent the past few years looking for the feeling of home; looking for places that felt like home. Sun Racket' is the brand new album from legendary Boston trio Throwing Muses, consisting of Kristin Hersh, David Narcizo and Bernard Georges. By the time the Hyenas went back into the studio, Kevin Strickland and Jim Kimball had left to form Mule and had left John and Larissa without a rhythm section. Many people thought this marked the end of the band. Not the case. Todd Swalla (founding member of Necros) stepped in on drums and Kevin Ries on bass. Todd is a much more subtle timekeeper than Jim and Ries had no problem locking in with him, but stayed in the background a little more than Strickland leaving Larissa to take up a little more of the slack. She rises to the occasion, her leads a bit more melodic than before, although still blanketed in a sheet of noise. Brannon's anguished vocals will still peel the paint of the walls and over the new slightly toned down direction, somehow seem even more extreme.

Crawl is notably the only of the Hyenas records recorded in Detroit at White Room Studios.

This album saw one more line up change: Kevin Ries left and one time Necros Ron Sakowski stepped in, the Hyenas went down to Memphis to the legendary Easley Studios to record their final LP with the one and only Doug Easley. On Hard Times, we see the Hyenas influences are more Howlin' Wolf/Muddy Waters than they are Nick Cave/Iggy Pop. The full-on sonic assault of the first three records has given way to a hard hitting groove that has a graceful Exile-era Stones vibe. Larissa's simple and one-of-a-kind guitar playing has never been better. Brannon does more crooning than screaming on this one, giving us their most ''musical'' offering yet. Every bit as emotionally ruthless as their previous releases, the Laughing Hyenas went out on a high note with Hard Times.

BIG JOANIE are Stephanie Phillips (singer/guitarist), Estella Adeyeri (bass) and Chardine Taylor-Stone (drums). The band formed in 2013 and released their first EP
'Sistah Punk' in 2014 and the single 'Crooked Room' in 2016. As part of London's thriving DIY punk scene they have played with locals Shopping; toured with US
punks Downtown Boys; and Dutch band The Ex; and performed at the first UK Afropunk festival. Inspired by The Ronettes, Nirvana, Breeders and Jesus and Mary
Chain, Big Joanie have described themselves as being "similar to The Ronettes filtered through '80s DIY and Riot Grrrl with a sprinkling of dashikis." Big Joanie recorded 'SISTAHS' over several sessions from November 2017 to January 2018 at Hermitage Works Studio with producer Margo Broom. One of the main reasons for coming together was to create an atmosphere to be "completely ourselves as black women and discover what was possible to realise in those spaces." The album cover features Steph's mum Joan, whom the band is named after, and her aunt on holiday in Wales.

If you are among the many who got their hands on the beautiful "Underground", republished by Schema a few months ago, you will already know of the involvement of, among others, Piero Umiliani, Alessandro Alessandroni - the name Braen seems to be his alias - and Oronzo (Rino) De Filippi, real name of the other credited author, the mysterious Gisleri. For this new chapter from Braen's Machine, the beautiful and hard to come by "Quarta Pagina (Poliziesco)", published apparently in 300 copies, there are few available pieces of information, pointing to an involvement of Giuliano Sorgini, hidden under the name of Raskovich, and author of five out of the eleven tracks on the release.

The lack of reliable information and the enigmatic flavor surrounding the project Braen's Machine, as opposed to the ease with which the music allows us instant identification, are among the secrets that make their records unique. Unlike "Underground", "Quarta pagina" portrays with great skill some possible - who knows if they ever have been realized - crime scenes, with hard-boiled and dark atmospheres, alternating with the psych funk rides that have always characterized many of the projects related to the Italian cinematic genre. All this without excluding, however, avant-garde attitudes and atonal passages that makes "Quarta pagina (Poliziesco)" comparable to the best pages of the Gruppo d'Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza.

The track titles, fascinating as usual, tell of "Fraud", "Shadowing", "Remorse", "Soliciting", and emphasize decisive moments as in the case of "The Victim", "On the Run" or "In Prison", while the indications that accompany the pieces will be a treat for fanatical collectors of sonifications. It's not that hard to imagine situations of "exotic full moon, preparation for a violent action, spiritualism, facing fear, sexual freedom, preparation for a revolt" while listening to these precious eleven tracks, which alternate between "slow and animated". And, believe it, you don't even need a dose of LSD (as per the advice of "The Den") in order to travel back to 1971, the year of the album's first release. A page 4 ("Quarta pagina") crime story perhaps, but a legacy of sound that largely deserves a nine-column headline on the front page ...

Arguably one of the most acclaimed and loved bands of the past 20 years, by both fans and their musical peers alike, The Beta Band formed in St. Andrews, Scotland, in 1996. Virginia Beach's Turnover has never been a band afraid of telling the truth. "Nobody has riffs anymore," says founding member/vocalist/guitarist Jacob Duarte when asked about his approach on 12th House Rock.
