Pedals is the second studio album from post-hardcore band Rival Schools, released 10 years after their debut record United by Fate was first released. Pedals was recorded by the entire original cast, whom were seen as a tremendous influence within the post-hardcore movement. Where United by Fate was an album often ready to burst at the seams with energy, Pedals shows a more matured and controlled feel, even somewhat experimental at moments with bass tones and frequent use of acoustic guitars and distortion effects.Much like the 2022 reissue of Rival School's first LP, this reissue features packaging updates curated specifically by the band to create the definitive version of this record. The album's artwork has been updated with new gatefold packaging and a slip-case cover along with an updated set of lyrics and liner notes. Presented together for the first time, American composer John McGuire's Pulse Music series (1975-1979) blurs the popular narrative that Minimalism was a reaction against Europe's angular, intellectual, inscrutable high-modernism. McGuire, born in California, studied at Occidental College in Los Angeles and UC Berkeley before going to Europe to study with Karlheinz Stockhausen, Krzysztof Penderecki, and Gottfried Michael Koenig. His compositions lock serialism's warped geometries onto an evenly spaced grid, perfectly preserving serial music's multi-dimensionality while smoothing its wildest disjunctures and sharpest angles. If serialism is Montreal's Habitat 67 modular housing complex, McGuire's Pulse Music compositions are the primary-colored grids of Le Corbusier's L'Habitation apartment complex _ an exuberant expression of the same materials and principles.Every layer of pulses is made distinct through its timbre, register, and tempo. We hear them as a plurality, organized like stars in the sky. Every so often the sky rotates and the stars appear in a different arrangement. Our ear naturally starts to draw connections and, as it sweeps between one layer and another, what was discrete becomes continuous. Pulses become flows; quantitative reality becomes qualitative experience.McGuire's pulse pieces were realized electronically, in the newly built Studio for Electronic Music at the State University of Cologne and WDR, but Pulse Music II adapted his ideas to an orchestral canvas. Commissioned retrospectively by the composer and radio producer Hans Otte for his Pro Musica Nova festival at Radio Bremen. Alongside the Bremen orchestra, conducted by Klaus Bernbacher, were four pianists_Christoph Delz, Herbert Henck, Deborah Richards, Doris Thomsen_and McGuire himself playing a series of twelve drone-like chords on the organ. "Sunlight to blue _ Blue to blackness" - This was one of the more upbeat title suggestions for the very bare, back to basics, reflective album from The Durutti Column. Originally released in June 2008, Sunlight to Blue_ was a conscious response to the previous two polished and 'studio-based' releases. Here he created some sparse, simply beautiful 'sketches' as he once called them, more reminiscent of his work from the early eighties. Many of the pieces are instrumentals played on his Juan Montero flamenco guitar, and he returns to 'Without Mercy' for the last track 'Grief' whilst reinventing 'Never Known' from LC. Now, for the first time, the LP is available remastered and re-packaged as a gatefold double 12" 180gram vinyl release. This album also saw the debut of the then talented young pianist and singer, Poppy Morgan, who co-wrote the melancholy Ananda as a duet with what Reilly dryly called 'intrusive guitar'. For the uninitiated, Vini was the first artist signed to Manchester's influential Factory Records, co-wrote and played on Morrissey's first solo album 'Viva Hate', and was heavily featured in the Manchester music culture film, '24 Hour Party People'. Vini Reilly has recorded under the name The Durutti Column since 1978 and has a rich portfolio of work, releasing over twenty albums in this time. Ever critical of Vini's voice, but ever a fierce champion of his talent, the late Tony Wilson would surely appreciate this return of The Durutti Column.

While the average person might think of Buffalo, NY, for its frigid winters and its contributions to the world of professional football, the initiated know Buffalo best for its outsized role in hardcore’s history. The city has produced more than its fair share of genre-defining acts, not least of which was the criminally short-lived, under-documented, and wildly innovative Cinderblock, whose members would go on to such legendary bands as Snapcase, Buried Alive, Earth Crisis, Terror, and more. Thirty years after their initial existence, Cinderblock has reconvened in order to commit their music to vinyl for the first time. Breathe The Fire is a collection of six songs originally conceived in the early ’90s, re-recorded by the band with accomplished producer Jay Zubricky at the helm. With tight grooves, adept melodic sensibilities, and a pummeling heaviness that presaged nearly the entire breadth of ’90s hardcore, the record is a critical document of one of hardcore’s most exciting and transitional periods. A year after the cassette-only release of Switched On Ra, another format has fallen from whatever kind of rare ether Bitchin Bajas occupy when they"re at home. The LP edition of Switched On Ra bears all the same riches (only richer of course) in its grooves, adding a lovely screen-printed rendering of the graphics to its larger-than-cassette-cosmos dimensions.Switched On Ra is the outcome of a typical Bajas exercise: pouring some out for the pioneers that came before (as they"ve done with Bitchitronics and their participation in the annual Chicago performance of "In C" over the years). It"s a nice way to get a flow - they play a little of themselves, then some for the pioneers, then a little more for the band. Before long, they"re playing with the inspirations twined, as they can only come from within.For Switched On Ra, this meant a deep delve into the song-book of one of their soul-predecessors, Sun Ra, whose music is literally written in the Bajas DNA. Digging into this music sounded wild on paper: the drone synth group taking on the Arkestra harmonies and Ra"s loose grooves? The trick was to get that sense of rhythm to translate across the spectrum from Ra to Bajas, in a way that worked for them both.Their rearrangements of the tunes went good - up and down the EQ band, they were finding the round sounds and jagged edges that brought Ra"s music into their own thing. Then at the last minute, there was another twist - why not pay tribute to the Queen herself, and think of the arrangements with a Wendy Carlos vibe? A little side homage? After all, Switched on Bach was visionary, bringing analog synths from the outside all the way into the mainstream in the late 60s - and this take on Ra is meant to take him to new ears everywhere.Sun Ra of course was his own kind of original keyboard visionary, using electric keyboards in the late 40s and 50s to fill a role in jazz that had traditionally been played on acoustic piano only. Once he"d done so, he took his writing in directions inspired by the ele...

Jordsjø is a duo from Oslo, Norway inspired by old horror movies, German 70s synth music, Swedish prog, fantasy novels and Norwegian nature. After three cassette demos, the album “Jord” was what the band considers to be their first “proper” album. Up until that point, the band only sold homemade tapes to friends and a few die-hard collectors - but Jord got a bigger audience, also outside Norway. The band has never been happy about the mix, done quickly with the intent of only a tape release – so they decided to give it a fresh mix from scratch, and include the other songs recorded at the same weekend in the Summer of 2016. Therefore, the «Jord Sessions». There’s a new organ track on «Abstraksjoner..» and some bells and percussion on «Valinors Lamper», otherwise, all tracks remain as the original. There’s an underlying theme of alienation, roots and dreams on Jord Sessions – with an organic and dynamic sound which gives associations to 70s prog, with traces of electronic music and folk. Plenty of flute, guitars and a vast array of vintage synths give the album a warm and vintage sound, while still sounding fresh and interesting. The band consists of multiinstrumentalist Håkon Oftung (Tusmørke, Black Magic) and drummer Kristian Frøland.

THE Casual Dots is excited to announce the release of Sanguine Truth, their second 10-song full-length album, on Christina BILLOTTE's Ixor Stix Records and produced by Fugazi's GUY Picciotto. These songs were composed and recorded between 2004 and 2019, at Inner Ear Studios with DON Zientara and at Figure 8 Studios in Brooklyn with ELI Crews. Spread out between three of the western world’s largest cities, the band members would regroup periodically to add a song here and there. Although the songs were written over a long span of time about various events and themes over the years, many of the album's songs appear particularly relevant to recent times. For example, the lyrics for “Frequency of Fear” were written and recorded in January of 2016, when there was not more than an inkling of the political insanity that would be realized over the next several years. The instrumental “17 Year-Old Locust” was written in 2004, the year of the same locusts that spawned 2021’s Brood X. Then, “Palindrome” is a reminiscence of a friend who decided to depart this world too soon, a situation that seems to be more prevalent than ever in this day and age. This is on clear vinyl.
