Svart Records is set to release the compilation album “Demology” by Finnish avant-garde death doom metal band Unholy. Including their early demo recordings "The Procession of Black Doom" (1990), "Demo 11.90" (1990) and "Trip to Depressive Autumn" (1992), this is the first time these demos are in the same package with exclusive liner notes.

Unholy emerged from the eastern Finnish town of Imatra in the late '80s. After changing their name from Armageddon to Holy Hell and eventually to Unholy, their mission was simple; to create harder, heavier, and slower music than their idols Black Sabbath and Celtic Frost. The lyrical themes and ideas for the songs came from Satanism, mysticism, anti-Christianity, mushroom trips, and shamanism among others. Finnish deep ecologist Pentti Linkola also inspired the band and their music. Some of the songs came up naturally by jamming riffs and others entirely by improvisation.

While the first two demos already made Unholy a force to be reckoned with, the release of “Trip to Depressive Autumn” caught the attention of the underground metal scene and various labels. The band was hungry for a recording contract, and it finally came into realization when Lethal Records released their debut album “From the Shadows” in 1993.

Undertow can be considered one of the founding fathers of the straight-edge hardcore scene in Seattle and this year we celebrate the 30th anniversary of their seminal record, At Both Ends. Getting their start in 1990, the band toured the States several times as well as a tour in Europe in 1995 right before they decided to call it quits. At Both Ends is their only full-length and it came out when the band was in full swing. Originally released on the Washington state label Excursion Records, this is the first pressing since it originally came out in the mid ’90s. Pressed on two color ways: a pink-swirl glow-in-the-dark and “Seahawks” colored splatter vinyl.

Underoath has been a seminal voice in progressive, heavy rock for almost two decades. Wah Wah is proud to release the first ever legit vinyl reissue of New Zealand's legendary Underdogs' second LP. By the time of this album, originally released in late 1970, The Underdogs line-up had changed. The original Underdogs had disbanded in 1969, and original guitarist Harvey Mann and bass player Neil Edwards decided to rebirth it with the help of Glen 'Pig' Absolum on drums - hence the band's nickname Pig, Mann & Edwards. This power trio line-up also saw the initial Underdogs UK flavoured R&B sound get heavier and evolve towards a more Cream-ier - Hendrix influenced territory. It was recorded under the production of former Brew man Bob Gillett in their native Auckland and saw its original release on the PYE label.

This is a 500 copies only reissue, housed in its original artwork in a vintage styled backflaps sleeve and featuring gatefold poster insert.

Under the Reefs Orchestra is a volcanic power trio that navigates between hypnotic post rock and stormy jazz. Grasping for the infinite and always threatening total combustion, their music finds its cruising speed in the storm of permanent upheaval. Based in Brussels and led by guitarist Clément Nourry, the group also includes saxophonist Marti Melia and drummer Jakob Warmenbol, both of them members of the punk jazz band Don Kapot. These three musicians have worked extensively throughout the kinetic Brussels music scene, and bring their unique individual voices together in an improvised and free form style. Under the Reefs Orchestra is following up their eponymous 2020 debut album with Sakurajima, an album which evokes images and textures that are both apocalyptic and divine and echoes the contemporary chaos that surrounds us all. But neither is their music 'commentary', and its instrumental quality functions equally as an escape. Sakurajima is led by the guitar work of Clément Nourry while also allowing generous space for the dynamic saxophone work of Marti Melia, and is as much 19th century chamber music as it is Jim O'Rourke, Soundgarden, King Crimson, or Morphine. Their blessedly sick new album, It's Time... To Rise from the Grave, shows the reconfigured quintet_Kyle Beam (guitars), Alexander Jones (vocals), Tommy Wall (bass),Jared Welch (guitars) and Matt Browning (drums)_have retained their mind-infecting sonic savagery but weren't satisfied in their pursuit to improve it through wicked (yet studied) reformulation. Certainly, Undeath's 2021 Decibel flexi, Diemented Dissection, paved the way, but it's tracks like "Fiend for Corpses," "Rise from the Grave," and "The Funeral Within" that display Undeath's terrifyingly insane trajectory.Undeath traveled to Philadelphia to record It's Time... To Rise from the Grave with Scoops Dardaris at Headroom Studios in March-April 2021. The group spent two weeks tracking_a song a day almost. Dardaris rough-mixed on the fly during the recording sessions, and then required two more weeks after to finalize the mix. Not ones to sacrifice a working team, they brought on Arthur Rizk (CreepingDeath, Enforced) to master. First ever release of any recordings by this fascinating heavy rock group from Colorado
8-page LP-sized color booklet with lyrics, photos, and stories from the road What was available to unknown hard rocking dreamers like Umbra in Denver in 1971-72? Weekend gigs. Nothing but weekend gigs. But there was an upside to that: bands like Umbra could mix original material in with covers, and make enough money to survive. Or in the case of Umbra, to make enough money to build a home studio, where they recorded ads to promote their upcoming shows—and eventually, laid down the eight tracks on this disc. Everything was recorded by bouncing tracks back and forth between two-track and four-track reel-to-reel tape recorders. Spacey intros and weird effects were created by recording guitar licks, then re-recording them played backwards at double speed. What sounds like a flute was the result of blowing over the top of a 14” goose neck (believe it or not).

The resulting tracks are hard edged and heavy, verging on acid rock at times. Makes sense, as Umbra was a power trio most of their too-brief existence. Yet the songs (heavy though they are) have a deft touch. There are weird effects, space rock elements, plenty of melody, and a refreshing category-free approach to writing songs that makes Umbra’s music exciting to hear.

Our Lion LP edition comes with an 8-page LP-sized color booklet, with lyrics, photos, plus interesting and funny things that can only happen to musicians, and did to Umbra. The CD edition comes with a sixteen-page color booklet containing the same material.

We know that band bios can be sterile and boring or can move to the opposite spectrum, rife with grandiose embellishment. Umbra’s story is neither. Instead, it is the story is the story of a band from the early 1970’s who recorded what they wanted to record: heavy, heavy music from the start of the “American Comedown Era” (as we’ve seen it described by friends for their Brown Acid series of compilations). Umbra’s story is also that of a band whose music, terrific though it is, has never to this point been released out into the wide world. Prepare yourselves to be surprised—and we hope as impressed as we are—by what Umbra had to offer.

Umberto is an artist whose work is distinctly cinematic. Composer Matt Hill’s performances and delicate compositions taken together have the cumulative ability to surprise. Hill, whose Umberto moniker is an homage to director Umberto Lenzi, is an experienced and active film composer, most recently scoring the film All That We Destroy. In addition to film and commercial work, Umberto has released a number of lauded solo recordings. On Umberto’s Thrill Jockey debut Helpless Spectator, his haunting music is otherworldly and affecting alike, leaving the listener with an unsettling and profound air of mystery.Umberto’s early recordings harken back to classic synth-driven sci-fi and horror soundtracks. Helpless Spectator uses synthesizers in an entirely different manner. Cold, looming monolith tones are now warm, softer pads that envelope the listener while guitar, cello, banjo and pedal steel add movement and light. Still, Hill unsettles with his arrangements and melodic phrasing. Unexpected shifts and turns in even the most tender movements of Helpless Spectatorare inflected with a contemplative melancholy and fragility.Umberto makes masterful use of varied textures throughout the album, blending supernatural effects and grounded instruments to create distinct atmospheres. Helpless Spectator is inquisitive and moving in equal measure, an album of somber elegance and delicate arrangements whose cumulative effect of unease is entirely unexpected.

For their first outing, new London-based reissue label Foam On A Wave resurface the remarkable debut album from one of the UK's foremost artists of 'ambient techno', Ultramarine's 'Folk'. Like the surrealist collage of the sleeve designed by Benoît Hennebert, Ultramarine weave together unique instrumentation and sonic influences into rich, ethereal soundscapes, now fully remastered for its 30th anniversary. Ian Cooper and Paul Hammond admitted they weren't totally sure what they were doing when they signed a record deal with the famously bohemian label Les Disques du Crépuscule and found themselves on their way to Brussels. There, over a two week stint, the Essex duo recorded the album - drawing on a kaleidoscopic palette influenced by both the Canterbury scene's jazz-infused psychedelia, as well as the contemporary Benelux scene, with particular nods to the likes of Benjamin Lew, The Durutti Column and Anna Domino. Conceived at a time when technology began reshaping the process of recording and production, the band's interest in fusing the organic and the electronic is apparent, and one that has remained with them throughout their career. 'Folk' both sits apart from and serves as a precursor to the 'pastoral techno' sound Ultramarine went on to pioneer. Following US and European tours alongside Orbital and Bjork, a few more albums and collaborations with the likes of Robert Wyatt and Kevin Ayers, plus remixes for and by Everything But The Girl, Carl Craig, Luke Slater and more, they folded the project for a number of years. Last year the band returned to their inaugural imprint with the ethereal 'Signals Into Space'. Albeit somewhat sparser, more sedate, it is in some ways a coming full-circle to the jazz-laden, analogue sound of their debut, which makes reissuing 'Folk' feel all the more timely.
